First look at Novella Blackwater from Westwood Instruments: TLDR; this is EXCEPTIONAL!
@WESTWOODINSTRUMENTS reached out to me recently and sent me a copy of their new Novella Blackwater, which is "A love letter to Americana and the modern Western".
I absolutely LOVE this collection of instruments. They are captured superbly, sound incredibly real and organic and utilise some effective aleatoric rhythmic effects. I hope you enjoy my first look at this library.
Westwood sent me the product to check it out, but this video contains my honest opinions - I'm not sponsored to say anything about this.
You can check this fabulous collection here: www.westwoodinstruments.com/instruments/novella-blackwater/

Final Fantasy Inspiration ? :O Awesome Video Thanks !!
Sounds beautiful. I am using BBCSO Core (non legato) layered with sample modelling strings. I prefer the sound of BBCSO and the programming and flexibility of Sample Modelling.
Not enough usable sounds. Would be best for games and effects. Not for mainstream music composing
Thanks for watching! I think the sounds are extremely useful, personally, especially the strings (exceptionally well-captured)! But I understand some of the sounds are a bit niche but that’s why I love them, personally!
I wasn’t too sure about this until I heard your demo…..just purchased it. I’m trying to calm down on sample libraries this year..but unfortunately not a great start lol how many do you roughly buy a year? I know some companies send you libraries to review…many thanks Steve

sounds great!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the review Tom! So glad you’re enjoying Blackwater! We really appreciate your deep dive. 🙌
An absolute pleasure, and thanks for introducing me to the brilliant world of Westwood!
This sounds so good, I for sure have to get CSSS
It’s amazing! Thanks for watching
Hey Tom, Thanks for sharing! is the PreSonus audio interface essential for writing orchestral music? ( considering I am not recording live instruments/I don't need any microphone for my compositions and I use only MIDI input? Thanks!
Thanks for watching. I’d recommend getting a MIDI controller with 2 or 3 faders for programming your expression and dynamics - the PreSonus I use for mixing, not programming, so I’d prioritise a MIDI controller first - something like the Ghostnotr Audio Controller that I have is brilliant!
Exceptional as you say. This will be going into my toolbox too.
Thanks for watching! It is indeed a tremendous library.
I appreciate you reviewing essential aspects. Mine is on the way. I've been missing out getting the most out of several libraries.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video, thanks:)
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching
Nice explanations, very detailed. Your piece is a bit reminiscent of Ralph Vaughn Williams, I hear hints of Barber's Adagio, but I don't think that's it. I have Glass Strings and it does sound great right out of the box so-to-speak, which is nice. I have many other orchestral libraries and solo instruments but CSSS are really good.
Wonderful piece Tom. I love some of the crunchy harmonies your counterpoint yields. Very nice writing and orchestration. The mockup is also very good. Must have taken quite a while to produce.
very enjoyable
What notation software did you use? That sounds great.
Sibelius, then programmed and mixed in Logic Pro
@ That was a lot of work, but very rewarding for the final product.
Do you teach too on online ?
Yes, drop me a line at tom@tomharrold.com
Wow it’s like real sound and amazing
Thanks very much for the review. I’ve been looking at this one. I have a few of these one-button-wonders that can provide underscores, mutating textures, and orchestral embellishments. For a music hobbyist like me, this one is very nice, though a bit pricey at $200 (regular $250). Still, it is on my wish list as a someday-maybe, perhaps if it goes on sale for 50% off.

Would you consider doing a template video?
Yes absolutely, I may make one very soon! Thanks for watching
You mentioned you have East West ( I’m guessing you mean the composer cloud subscription) do you not like the Hollywood strings? And what do you use from EW?
Indeed I use ComposerCloud. I do like Hollywood Strings (a lot!), I just don’t use it because it’s another thing to learn to programme properly, another UI to get used to, new pre-delays etc. - for ease of use I just default to CSS or some sort of Spitfire because they’re what I’m most fluent in and (I think!) get the best results. Thanks for watching!
…I use EW for percussion, woodwinds, pianos, harps…
@ yeah. That makes sense then. I also have Composer Cloud. But I’ve had it for a while now. It was my first “real” orchestral library(s). So I’m pretty used to Hollywood Strings. I’ve contemplated buying CSS but I have tons of strings libraries and I’m starting to realize I’m better off sticking to what I know. Basically the same thing you’re saying . Obviously sounds are important but too many options can definitely stunt my productivity. So lately I’ve been trying limit myself when writing. Not letting my self dive into the abysss of samples I’ve collected over the years. And making a point be personally restrictive by only allowing myself to use 1 or two sounds when writing. at least until I have a clear perspective of what I’m writing and then maybe I can experiment a bit.
Saw that same video a couple of months back. A few weeks later I ordered one. My Conductor MkII came in ~2 weeks ago and I absolutely LOVE it. It's built like a tank, but with some of the smoothest faders I've ever used.
The thing with altiverb, is it's the sound of an empty room. When there is an audience and when there is an orchestra playing, the hall sounds totally different. Altiverb however shines in audio post for capturing environmental rooms to be used for ADR.
have you ever tried MTurboReverb ? I think its amazing, despite the awful user interface.
Tom, did you get the Fluid Shorts III library and is that what you've demo'ed here? I've been looking at the Performance Samples catalogue and had my eye on Fluid Shorts offering (rely love the bite and the attack) - but undecided on which of the three they offer. Thanks, G
Yes fluid shorts. Go for it! Anything PS is worth it, IMO, but fluid shorts is very, very useful and realistic
@@TomHarroldMusic Thanks a million Tom, thats great! I've all of their freebie's in my template of love them. Maybe Santa will be kind this year or Jasper will be really kind and have a little Christmas sale 😃
Not sure if you noticed, but you can open Trillian within Omnisphere. This would apply to Keyscape too.
Yes absolutely. But sometimes I like visually being able to tell if it’s a bass patch or omni patch
Have got any Westwood Stuff?
No I don’t actually!
@@TomHarroldMusic ...you might want to check your email ;)
Really informative video Tom, I really enjoyed. I have BBC SO Pro and just picked up CSS, so can't wait to try blending them like this. I see you're using the LUXE plugin, I was looking into this also, do you use it primarily for extra sheen on the high frequencies for strings. Klevgrand also have a Pana plugin (similar to Panbox) - do you find the Panning plugins a real benefit for positioning instruments? Thanks, G
Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching! I use LUXE quite subtly; just for some nice harmonics/distortion to help them cut through the mix. I use Panbox but ONLY when I'm using close mics/signals - you don't want to pan whole rooms, it'll make the instruments sound rather odd. Thanks for tuning in!
@@TomHarroldMusic Really appreciate you coming back to me Tom and the advice, that's fantastic!! Really loving you channel, learning so much from all the videos.
@ no problem, thanks for watching!
awesome video I need more videos on altiverb there are not many out there
I'll do my best! Thanks for watching
Thanks for the video! Nice complete presentation! I put a long comment on the official video too.
Awesome, thank you!
Sounds great but I can’t say I want to use pre written music
I know what you mean, but you get a lot of control and I think it'll blend really well with other libraries.

nice video :-) I use afflatus .and css strings. but need much EQ change . in de mid range ... but I also a korg kronos with the Epic Composer Private Collection . it sounds good without EQ change.
Very nice!
I had the privilege of playing a gig in Mechanics Hall years ago and that amazing experience drove me to the Seventh Heaven Professional version. It has a setting for Mechanics Hall as does Altiverb, but for much cheaper. There are also some Bricasti M7 IRs floating around the internet that will work in Logic Space Designer if someone is looking for that specific hall. Thank you for sharing your early reflections/late reflections approach. Always informative when I get the chance to watch some of your videos.
I will be honest. Initially, I thought, "Who is this guy?" Then I checked out your website, and immediately became interested when I saw the video of the live orchestra performance. From there, it only got better. What I like most about your studio is that it's not over-burdened with gear. The more theory, harmony, counterpoint and orchestration knowledge I acquire, I feel the less gear I need to accomplish the end goal which is simply (but perhaps not so simply) writing quality music. *Subscribed*
Thanks for watching and for your kind comments!
Nice set up. Nice video.
Thanks for watching!
Great studio tour Tom! I love insights into other composers' studios. I've subbed 😊
Thanks for the sub!
Anothe question: When you import the midi into logic, all you do is record the expression and modulation?
I usually have to make some quite significant changes to the MIDI, too - things like the ending of notes (to make legato), dynamics etc. - there's no easy way, it just takes a lot of time
Hi Tom! I have a question...What string library do you recommend, LA Scoring Strings 3 or Cinematic Studio Strings? Thanks for the video!!!
I don't know LA SS that well, so I'd always say CSS :)
The scores to the left are probably the most exciting bit for me haha. Also, love the Omnisphere box sitting there! Sometimes I miss the days of buying things in actual boxes...
for this piece though, i prefer bbc so more. reason is that it is more classical live performing sounding, less hollywood hyped mixing. Also it has way less slurred legato's, and lots less dramatic vibrato.
You make a fair point - that's the whole reason to have options :)
Hey there, liked your video, but I'm new to sample libraries and there are many, but I love the way performance sample libraries sound not that it means anything for As beginner ears. CCS is aloud MM also good, etc. What would be a best string library you start with that not difficult to understand or work with. Also, what screen moderator do you use?
Hello! Thanks for your message. I’d always go for something by Spitfire for ease of use / programming. Their libraries sound tremendous and can be really effective with little experience. BBCSO core would be a great starting point. Sorry, what do you mean by screen moderator?
I'm sorry your screen monitor size and brand? My bad!
@@kennethjackson4858 No problem! It's a pretty old Asus, 28-inch - it's on my list of upgrades!
Tom, I have a question for you: which Ominisphere patch are you using for your mono bass?
I think it’s just a default sine wave with a bit of distortion on it! So it doesn’t have to be an omni patch; apple in-built could get the same result. Thanks for watching
