- I wanted to try to make my own DIY Diffusion Filter to emulate the Moment CineBloom and Black Pro Mist Diffusion Filters. I used some Walmart Hairspray and a cheap UV filter and got some surprising effects!

I actually like the hairspray because it keeps the blacks clean and the blooms the highlights and adds softness to the skin. I don't enjoy the milky blacks from the cinebloom.
Awesome! Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised with how it handled the shadows. I agree whenever I use the cinebloom I usually end up tweaking the blacks to bring them down to where I like them :)
Hairspray for the win!
Love it!
Naturally, one big advantage with the good old hairspray trick is that you have full control and can use different strength depending on situation. Most filters (incl pro mist) are quite strong when it comes to halation. Even the weakest ones.
Yes, I agree, it was nice being able to keep trying until I got the exact intensity I was hoping for :)
Really nice comparison! You can probably achieve a more similar cinebloom if you waited longer after spraying into the air before swiping/catching the particles. Bigger particles fall out first, before the smaller particles. So, by giving enough time and doing more swipe attempts you should potentially get even finer particles deposited onto the filter.
That's an awesome thought I didn't consider. Thanks for sharing 👊🏼 I'll have to try that.
I can’t lie, I prefer the hairspray
Glad you did, I was really impressed on how good it looked 🙌
thanks for doing this comparison... you have just saved me 60-70 dollars (unless I can justify the longterm use of a CineBloom)... surprised at how the hairspray did provide some kind of softness without becoming muddy in the shadows as with the CB... I was also surprised at how strong the CB filter was only at 10% (some samples look like they were closer to 20)... will have to try the hairspray method myself!
Glad I could help!! Yes, in some lighting scenarios I liked how subtle the hairspray was. Hope it turns out well for you when you do! :)
Thanks for making this vid! Def a fun journey to follow through your day as well!
Hey Jonathan! Thanks so much, I appreciate it 🙏🏼
I'd rather buy the mist filter because in my country the hairspray is more expensive than the mist filter 🙈
Ahah that's crazy! Where do you live?
@@AndrikLangfield Philippines 😂
@@AndrikLangfield the mist filter is around 200 pesos and the hairspray is 300 pesos 😭
@@raphroxas Depends on the brand. There are some really cheap ones but i havent seen anyone comparing them directly
Loving the vlog style! Dope as always brother
Thank you so much! Yeah, was trying something different for this one :)
off ttopic but the way the baby is looking at the filters is the cutetst tthing ever! 4:50
Thanks so much 🙏🏼
Such a good comparison, thank you a lot! It works very well actually, good enough :)
Glad you liked it and yes, I was surprised how well it worked :)
Always enjoy your videos. Well put together.
Hey, thank you!! Means so much :)
ayyooo thanks for the video man! i never thought of this. by your experiment i do actually like the diy hairspray more. it looks to me that it only effects more of the highlights and retaining the blacks. i'm going to try this tomorrow. thanks for the idea!
Hey, that's awesome! I also really liked the results. Hope it works well for you, thanks for watching 🙏🏼
I was really surprised by how good the hair spray looked! I'd say the two were faily evenly matched. I prefered the CineBloom on the building but the spray on the lamp post.. Might be worth screwing two cheap UV filters together and having the hair spray on the inside. That way, it wouldn't be able to smudge off even when changing lenses.
Hey, I was too! Glad you enjoyed the video and I love that suggestion. That could work nicely! :)
This channel deserves more views. Thanks for making this.
Hey! Thanks so much for the support 🙏
I remember once in HS i got hairspray on my glasses and had Cinebloom-esque vision for months lol. It took me so long to realize
Ahah this is amazing :)
Thanks for the video! Very interesting experiment
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!!
I made promist filters from UV and black paint spray. The first was too much. The second is a little bit light. I think your DIY is great.
Hey, that would be interesting to see how yours worked :) Might try that for fun! and thank you!
*subbed* much love from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦 I wanna try this one
Thanks Louis! Vancouver is beautiful :) and hope it workes well for you!
Thank you so much!! You just saved me 50€ XD also your baby is cute!!
Awesome! Glad this was useful :) and thank you so much!
Lol great vid :)
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Just had a go at this using a very old and fairly rough UV filter. Love it, I may have gone a bit heavy but hey who cares I guess I can wash it off and try again.
Hey, I'm so glad to hear you liked the results! And yes, it washes off pretty easily :)
Hairspray is legit lol. How long would you say the “bloom” effect stay on with the hairspray?
I found the hairspray stayed on perfectly fine as long as it didn't come into contact with water. I ended up spraying it in the inside of the filter so it wouldn't get smudged off and so I could still clean the outside of the filter without removing the effect. So pretty decent for what it is and itll come off easily with some tap water if you mess up or don't like the results 🙌🏼🙌🏼
@@AndrikLangfield wow. Great to know. Thanks!
@@CreatorMelvin no problem!:)
Thanks for the video! And I just want to point out - your baby is beautiful!!! Those dark pair of eyes
Hey, thank you so much! I appreciate it :)
I like more the Hairspray !But what happens if you put on f11 or f16,are the particles visible or its fine ?
thanx for amazing explain ....
You're welcome!:)
try black spraypaint instead (the kind you can wash of in the first minutes of application) and spray it on the inside of the filter so you can clean the front) gets much closer to original BPM....IMHO mine looks even better than BPM but that of course is personal preference......you'll need to do it a few times but you can get the particles to be as small as on the BMP filters! I've compared them side by side and immediately sold my (expensive AF)4x4 BPM......... p.s. also try to use a good multicoated UV-Filter ..not the cheap ones.......that way you'll get no nasty reflections against bight sources (the BPMs produce those nasty reflections sometimes and it absolutely ruins the shot IMO)
Vlog style, aiiiiight
Thanks! Glad you liked it lol
I love the hairspray look...
Thank you! Yes I also was very impressed on how well it turned out :)
The trick is to spray, catch, WAIT, repeat
Yes, thank you so much!
How would you say I can get a camera like yours with $200
I'm using an a7iii but on a smaller budget, I'd recommend looking into something used. A lot of the older Sony APSC sensor cameras such as the a6300 you can find under 1000 which shoots great pictures and really decent 4k for the price.
@@AndrikLangfield ok thanks so much!
@@Taleslol No problem 👍🏽
The Midwestern "Ope"
Cinebloom looks too strong, completely destroying the contrast. Hairspray I can't say much without watching the original full resolution footage. But hairspray looks much better in terms of blooming and halation. Does the hairspray add weird grain to footage? Or shows uneven texture on plain flat surfaces?
Hey, good question, yes you can see it but it's only obvious when I move or rotate the filter so if you have a lens that focuses by rotating the front element like some older vintage lenses then you'd definitely see the spots. Here is a sample of what I mean - 5:43
@@AndrikLangfield Thanks man. I like your content. You have a beautiful family.
@@helmet212 Thanks man, I appreciate it 🙏🏼🙏🏼
This has to be something people who can see all colors can see. Not us color blind people lol
Look for the difference in how the light goes from a harsh light to a softer rounder light. Looks more like a sunset sun than mid day sun :)
Cinebloom all the way... your hairspray is smudgy and a real stretch to say it's anything like a real filter.
This video was 90% fluff. Please get to the point faster.
hair spray is way better hahah
Lol glad you like it :)
Hairspray was better. 👩🎤
Lol in some scenarios I preferred it also
Do we really need to see your whole trip to Walmart? 2:18 to skip the BS.
Yooo listen that hairspray is trash, let’s keep it 100
