Why spend a lot of money when you can try it for cheap?
I will show you today how you can build a mist filter from a standard uv filter and a little skill.
Of course, I also provide you with my reference pictures so you can get an idea of what to expect.
So if you want to save a lot of money like me then take a look. It is certainly worth it.

Thanks for watching. 🙌 What do you think about homemade gear? Would you use it or rather pay more and buy the real product even when the homemade is enough?
Not even having watched the video yet, but I know it really depends on the product. For filters, yes, but for lights and microphones, from experience might be better to buy the real deal...
@@JayRegularYes, certain product categories are really hard to build yourself. 😀 my main light for filming, for example, consists of a 10€ photon lamp in a standard lampshade. i glued a diffuse umbrella to it with gaffa tape.😅 looks strange but works well. But I still bought a real LED lamp because I wanted to adjust the temperature otherwise I would have kept the thing. 😆
100$ saved :)
oh hey mathieu, 😀 I'm glad you liked the idea.
The bloom effect in that bike shot is really good
appriciate it!
The problem with mist filters isn’t only the price, it’s more the current availability.
Das Intro war spitze!
Ha danke 😀 Das stimmt es kann relativ lange dauern bis die richtigen Filter geliefert werden. Dann halt selbst bauen!
the sound sends shivers down your spine. lovely shots and this beautiful dog.✨✨✨
thanks, no one can resist the my dog's sweet look. 😆
I love the opening scene with your dog! It’s like a drama movie 😂
hehe yes, an absolutely awful daramatic walk with the dog. 😆
Yeah! A very cheap and sustainable idea to test the style of the "Mist Filter" in advance. The results are really impressive. Keep it up!
Yes! It doesn't always have to be the expensive version if you just want to test something. 😀
This video made me feel dumb as hell for buying all these mist filters 😂
😆 pro mist fitler from different manufacturers are even better but sometimes a little hairspray is enough. 😄
Hello Ivan, since you have own mist filters, can you please tell me if it's okay to clean them using lens wipes like Zeiss lens cleaners? Do you think it would damage the mist look by any chance? I'm considering to buy one of those but I don't actually know how to handle them because I often shoot outside and get a lot of dirt on my gear.
@@nord7556 Am not Ivan but still answer times. 😆 Only the inside of the filter has the mist effect and it is permanent. Personally, I would only use cleaning solutions designated by the manufacturer for the sensitive side.
As a mature adult balding male I now have a reason to buy myself hairspray. Thanks so much.
😆 A good conversation starter. you're welcome.
You're gonna be big man!
thank you very much, i hope so too. 😀
That intro though! I've been meaning to try this myself for quite some time now and I think you've inspired me to finally do so!
yes try it out it actually relatively simple. have fun with it! 😄
Wow man the results are mind blowing! Gonna give it a try!
thank you, I can only recommend to try it yourself it's really fun :D
Wow! Great tips Thank you for this. I shall try it instead of using filter from photo APP.
Hey Naomi, yes, try that out. such a mist filter behaves quite differently than a normal photo app filter.
Great video as always dude! I’ve been wanting to try something like this for a while now!
Thank you Reimann, Will you now also build one? If you have made a few cool pictures you can let me know on IG. 😀
Thank You for saving us from those guys who price a piece of glass like diamonds.
You're welcome. 😀
It the most humorous DIY I have ever seen😁 But the idea is so easy and safe a lot of money
thank you very much, an unfun tutorial is a boring tutorial and i didn't want to do that. 😀
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel waiting for more!
Such a good idea. 💈💈💈
thanks a lot! 😀
You beautiful man. Found a uv filter in my box of junk and holy cow it works like a charm. Can't wait to hit my local woodland.
Ps, cheap ones seem to run around $30ish on ebay. Different strength options.
Very cool exactly for old unused uv filter it is the perfect recycling. have fun. by the way, I also bought a tiffen filter at some point. :D
great video bro i like the interesting title i hope this video goes viral because uv filter are the most important to protect lenses :D
haha nothing will go viral with me. 😆 I just hope that I get a few more friends who are aware of my channel.
Loved the intro man the most dramatic dog walk ever!
Ngl it’s a really helpful tip, I’ve been on the fence about getting a myst filter but have the same doubts so definitely gonna try this DYI one!
Eagerly waiting for that BnW recipe! 🖤🤍😁
Yes, the most dramatic intro about nothing! 😆 Just try it out I was also selbstbt surprised that it worked so well. There is also a video about the recipe soon! 😀
Oh shit! Time to start spraying EVERYTHING
i like the idea of spraying a summicron with hairspray just to see people's horrified faces. 😆
I have a few UV filters I got for free from B&H; I'll try this when I have a chance. Thanks
my pleasure, nice that your uv filters get a new purpose. 😀
You won't be a small channel for long! Excellent videos.
thanks connor! I hope so too. 😁
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel Are you planning to share the B&W recipe btw?
lol amazing, gonna try it with my X-T3
yes, try the recipe. it's always a lot of fun. 😀
Great tip - thank you :)
you're welcome. :D
Amazing bro, those black and white "medium" format are looking dope 👏🏼👏🏼
thank you fabio, I will share the recipe soon!
Great Humor as always, great tip and video!
Thanks, I'll make myself useful for the community. 😄
This was super well done and informative, thanks for the DIY! Filters are so damn expensive lol
that's right. you can also make more than one for different strengths and save even more money. :D
Thanks 😊😊
my pleasure. ✌️
The most epic dog walk ever. 🤟🤟🤟
ha yes it was. the most epic nothing. 😂
I don't know why I've just discovered your channel but I'm happy I have! Amazing content mate 👌
Love to hear that, thanks for the support! 😄
Yeah great Tip dude i will try this 😊👍
my pleasure. 😀
You are so funny 😂
hehe thank you diego! 😄
Which side do you spray? The one facing the front element of the lens or the one facing outside? Or does it even matter
Hey, so you can do it both ways. It just makes more sense to do it on the side facing the lens because you don't have to clean that. ✌️
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel thank you!
Cooler Tip! Gleich mal ausprobieren.
I have a white spray and a matte finish varnish spray in stock, will that do the job?
theoretically, you can use anything that creates a fine mist. However, I would advise you not to use spray that can only be removed with solvents. With solvent you would probably also destroy the coating.
Since it is almost impossible to spray the right amount on the filter the first time, I would be careful with varnish or lacquer.
Hallo!
Hey, how long can it last?? Ill try it i have unused UV filter would be nice to try the hack
oh hey, i have my filter since the video and it still works as good as the first day. as long as you don't try to clean the side with the hairspray it will hold. 😀
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel 😁 thank you so much, ill try it soon after getting the hairspray, love that video ❤️
Don’t lie. That hairspray is for your Tarzan locks. This is the first time I’ve seen the hairspray hack actually work really well!
thank you, for the tarzan look you need nothing more than a hedge trimmer and nature! 😆 the hairspray must be distributed quite evenly otherwise it does not work homogeneously. this is probably the point that others always do not quite consider.
You got my attention :D
I think you will not be disappointed! 😀
This is a super simple tutorial and great use of old unpurposed UV filters sitting on your camera lenses. It breathes fresh vintage air to your images and makes everything look nice and film like/cinematic. I do know if you want to replicate a black pro mist filter, you can use black spray paint instead of hairspray. I wonder if coloured spray paints could add different visual changes to the images? experimentation time xD
thanks a lot jay! that's a really good question you raise though. would you get a blackmist with black color or even better.... cinestill halations if you use red color?? oh man i actually have to follow up on your question 😀
When I saw the price of the black pro mist filters I wanted to throw my chair through the window. Now with this work around I can save lots of money and repair bills.
yes the pro mist filter are already really expensive. so I had absolutely no desire to buy me one. but I'm glad that I could help you with it! 😀
Do we have to repeat it anytime we wanna use or it protect itself for reusing?
when it dries, the hairspray stays on until you remove it yourself. so you can repack it and reuse it as often as you like. ✌️
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel thank youu! ^^
oh your dog is as cute as a racoon. 🦝
ehm...thanks? 😅
you wrote « subscriPe » to emphasise your german accent ? 🤣🤣🤣 Nice video 👍🏻😜
ah damn that I have not even noticed.😆 that probably happens when you edit videos in the middle of the night. thanks for watching.
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel I love your humor! Keep doing the good job with such a good mood! 😀
My vintage summicron has a built in mist filter called haze. I save another $190 by not having it serviced.
hehe so you can save even more. 😆 I also have a canon zoom lens with a lot of haze that I actually use only at night. Even that was cheaper than a haze filter.
May I know where you get your music from?
I mostly search youtube for copyright free music or use the aha music chrome extension if to find out what songs are playing.😀
omg thank you so much for this sub for me
my pleasure. 😀
Hair sprays are RELATIVELY expensive. Can I use Deodorant Spray instead of that? 😂😂😂
I actually tried that once but the deodorant evaporates after a while. Hairspray, however, remains permanent. :D
Man, it cost not even a single dollar to achieve a 100$ filter look
Yes, you can also touch the screen with greasy fingers, then you really haven't spent any money. 😄
Where does that interesting accent come from?
Thank you, it's a German accent. :D
