Yes, 200 hp is enough for its weight but it needs about 200 ft-lbs of torque as well to go with it. 250hp with 200+ tq, and your looking at the best car in many years for many years to come.
harlemkiid149 Plenty of people get 300+hp utes etc. and spend most of their time accelerating to 50km/h in the streets :) It's all about driving the car closer to the limits for some people. And not just in a straight line...
Great vid : ) I have a GT86, and I grew up where this was filmed (I think); it's an excellent road for the 86 and there are parts that I can take quicker than in my old S2000s, so good is the handling : )
Funny that Initial D's main character drives both an Impreza and an AE86, and that manga/anime is a decent contribution to the AE86's popularity. Toyota's offering a Fujiwara Tofu Shop edition of the GT86 too ^-^
You can all talk shit and say other cars are better, but you will never understand the magnificence of this car until you drive it yourself. As a PROUD owner, I can say it is simply perfection. Great review car throttle!
Always wanted a RX8 Mazda but the reliability issues put me off. The GT86 seems to be the same recipe, I like the idea that the car is built for handling and to be agile 😀
The GT86 actually has four traction control modes. The fourth one is sort of hidden. 1. On, default 2. Sports mode, sorta off but corrects a bit 3. "off", still corrects just a bit to keep you safe 4. Konami code mode, completely everything off To do the 4th one, you need to warm your engine to operating temperature. You then have to do a sequence of handbrake pulls and brake pedal pushes. I don't remember it off the top of my head, but you can google it by the "BRZ/GT86 handbrake dance" or something. After you are done, you start the car and now it is in fully unrestricted, all electronic helps off mode.
It's 2017 I bought mine for a fun weekend car at the end of 2015. Iv seen the new 2017 option come out and I'm still so happy with my purchase. I am curious to know if they will drop a new shape in the future though.
I own a BRZ (Manual), happy to answer any questions for any people questioning if they should buy one :) I for one completely agree with the review, the car is excellent and such a passionate joy everytime you enter the cockpit.
It's not a question of if, but when. Probably next year, my clio 172 still has some life in her. GT86 will be a perfect replacement. Lightweight drivers car, fun and cheap on fuel/running costs - compared to heavy and expensive turbos, which guzzle fuel like camels. Not interested in those.
The GT86 is actually at the top of my dream car list, but a 3 liter(maybe arbitrary, but it should equate to a supposedly much "needed" 50% boost in power), 300 horsepower(again, arbitrary, but I feel like it's an incredibly solid amount for a car like this), horizontally-opposed six-cylinder(for a butter-smooth engine) version with an even 50/50 weight distribution(ideal for street driving and amateur track use) and 3,000 pound curb weight(a very reasonable number, especially with higher-grade materials) would be a force to be reckoned with, but still an absolute blast to drive! It would likely also put the average driver's torso/head in the dead center of the vehicle(an ideal location for experiencing various g-forces), while adding a bit of hood to this already beautiful form... Tell me I'm wrong. Edit: This concept had a bit of mid-engine dreaming mixed in that isn't compatible with the idea of moving the driver to the center of the vehicle while lengthening the hood...sorry. So, either my mid-engined dream or a longer engine bay.
A lot of the so called "AE86 fans" are calling this car shit, but do remember, when the AE86 was new there were people like you with the same arguments as you.
+Eggly Bagelface I am an AE86 fan and I actually adore this car. It has driving characteristics that are actually a lot of fun on the road and has enough power to wake you up. This isn't really the best track car in my opinion, but it is the best car for twisty, empty roads. Just like the AE86 is actually. It shares the same philosophy when you think about it.
Proud owner since 2013. Had many people say to me "why buy that when x car has more power".... that has got to be the least relevant argument imaginable. Especially when the "x car" is usually some kind of hatchback which, let's be honest' was designed to be a compromise between practicality and comfort. Some people just want big numbers, I just want to drive - now leave me in peace.
It may have less power. But power doesn't count for jack-diddly-shit in twisty, winding roads and tracks. It's also a car that you can push to the limits on public roads more often. Have a nice day, Channy132! :D
Why get the automatic version? For me it was a no-brainer, I tried both cars and maybe it's just my lack of shifting skills, but I don't think I will EVER shift as fast and smooth as the automatic, especially when accelerating fast. Also, as a daily commute car for a regular driver like me, the auto gives more time to feel the handling of the car because I don't need to concentrate on shifting. The auto gearbox also has this sport mode where it keeps the RPMs high when braking for a turn, so there is immediate power when leaving the turn. So I got the automatic transmission version of this car, and I love it, thank you very much ;-)
Futterama I use an Auto as well (own an ibiza cupra) but wanting an 86, is the auto shifting on the 86 as smooth as other dual clutch cars?...if you've tried others anyway.
Yes, I do like the GT86, but it wasn't the first car like that. In 1987 in the United States, the chevrolet corsica was produced. It had about the same height off the ground as the narrator showed in the GT86, a 3.1 liter 6 cylinder motor along with a 2.2 liter 4 cylinder motor during the last 4 years of production (1992-1996. I have the '96 4 cylinder version) Since the chevy emblem on my car is black, on a black grill, and the size of your index finger, most people think it's an import. It is also INVINCIBLE! I'm not kidding. The car I have is 18 years old now and has never had a problem. It is forward wheel drive (which can be good or bad depending on what you like), but the power and roar of the engine makes up for that. The fuel economy is also amazing along with the price ($1800 for my car in perfect condition). The car is also a foot wider than a smartcar which makes it good for cities full of 1999-2003 mustang drivers who think they own the road. They will kill you where I live. If you found this interesting, look up the chevy corsica. if not, sorry I wasted 2 minutes of your time.
Being the stupid teenager I am, I went 100 miles per hour the other day and the engine sounded like a ferrari 458 once the overdrive kicked in (I saw/heard one a couple of minutes later). The corsica's limit is 120 with only stock and 140 with a turbocharger.
Its got good handling, quickness and I bet its good on fuel too. Its only a 2 litre and is reliable too. I already have a Toyota Celica. Hopefully hard work will pay off in the future to get the GT86.
Own one, very happy with it.. handles awesome.. not very fast, but i don't need it to be, i have done breath mods, and will tune once out of storage.. best car I have owned ( owned five cars )
Nice video. But 'no other car comes close'? Hmm, not sure. RX8, S2000, 180sx (with the SR20DET) to name a few. Ok, the S2 only has two seats, but it was pulling off similar tricks for many years before the '86 showed up. I guess depending on your manufacturer allegiance, or whether or not you have to have something brand new, those others might not cut it. But they're arguably as good as, if not better than, the Toyota.
the concept of this was actually called the Toyota FT-86 which stood for future Toyota 86, a reference to the AE86. The Larger FT-HS is actually the FT-1 concept better known as the new supra/2000gt.
Whoever hates on this car either is just that, a hater, or has never driven one. I currently drive and own a '14 FR-S 6MT and love it. My last car was a single turbo '05 Mustang GT with a FULL suspension set up, and I still enjoy the FRS leaps and bounds more.
They are so popular here in Australia (the most popular transmission is the paddle shift) I want to get one with the extras like the huge spoiler paddle shift and the bronze metallic paint

I have to say it is quite amazing how hate-filled and ignorant people are about this glorious car. No matter what car forum you go to, people are always hating on this car. As an owner, I just don't understand why people hate this car so much... Oh well, fuck the haters.
ninteh The Accord V6 is pretty porky, but it's also got a not-inconsiderable amount of power. The recent models all have over 270HP, the current model has about 300.
Surprised to see no mention of the GT86/AE86 connection (Do a search for "AE86 Corolla Sprinter"... The Sprinter was a rear-wheel-drive Corolla designed to be the base model for the AE86 racing circuit in Japan back in the mid to late '80's).
This is the comment I came here for. The gt86 is obviously named to honour the ae86. I'd have thought a website dedicated to all things car related would realise that. But then again they are all a bunch of rich kid posers who don't care about anything made before 2005.
I think its a good looking car it may not be the quickest car of the line but fun isnt always about speed its about how the car makes you feel , Yes buying 2nd hand maybe able to get yourself an M3 or Evo X which will blow it away but they dont come with 3/5 year warrenty and cost a hell of a lot more to insure and keep running ie Fuel costs, tyres , servicing .
I love the ae86. But in real life, now... they aren't even close are they? I mean even just in terms of safety... I would rather be in about 10 crashes at 60mph in the GT86 vs 1 crash in the AE86.
this car was built for the "bendy bits" as you brits call it. it's not going to have that top end speed, nor even the handling you think it should (blame those prius tires, put on there for that exact reason) but it will nose around those turns like an angel. put some fatter pirelli's on there, and you have a superb handling machine; that will be hard to break lose even with the traction controls off. it's a wonderful drive, plus with subaru and toyota''s sister company scion making parts, customizing one will be easier than a honda in a few years. this car is so well marketed that even journalists have no clue what to make of it yet. it's only drawback? the price. yes, you can buy more car for the same amount, you could even buy a new mini and say it has just as much fun in it as the BRZ/FRS/GT86: but for all that, you wont get a reliable boxer, rear wheel drive, manual, damn near perfectly poised and balanced roadster. And I feel this is more of a roadster, then the sport coupe that is it's legacy; the AE86 Trueno, also known as the corolla everywhere else.
No, I mean is it filled with electronic shit? I heard you can't even change taillights and wheels on modern Audis and similar brands without special tools that are way too expensive. And I also don't like this electronic suspension stuff, sounds like it'll break too soon.
It's 2019 and I bought a brand new one (manual obvs) Honestly, the buyers remorse went away the moment I started driving it. After starting and stalling a bunch cuz I'm a meme and only drove a motorcycle or automatic transmission car before, this thing proved to be the most fun I've had on 4 wheels. It's forgiving for a beginner like me, but at the same time, always teases me with a peek through the doorcrack to the fun beyond my skill level. It's no streetlight racer but that's kid shit anyways.
What makes this car beautiful is what makes me hate every other modern overrated piece of shit like BMW, the lack of a raw driving experience. GT86? Just you and the car. BMW? All sorts of electronics on the dash making me feel like Im not in a car anymore.

Good review but speak slower, sounds like your in a rush. Can't understand you sometimes.
Thanks for watching John, think I was probably in a rush to get back in the GT86 driver's seat ;) But will bear that in mind.
+TheNumber1John for shorter video maybe?
I have an 86, it's just fast enough but is so much fun down a bouncy, twisty back road.
Plus, skids.
also known as the FR-S in the states
That is cause it is a Scion and not a toyota.
IIGrayfoxII Scion is made by Toyota
*****
But it is not a toyota.
Scion is another make but is owned by toyota.
IIGrayfoxII when you open up the hood on a scion it says toyota, when you look at the emissions sticker on the hood it says toyota motor co. i get what your saying but its still a toyota
***** The truth is that , They are all made by Subaru on its plant for scion and toyota ....
Still want an S2000.
Good luck
I would buy this car over everything else. I love the analogue feel of this car. Even the electric steering feels like a hydraulic. The only thing stopping me from this car is torque. Yes, 200 hp is enough for its weight but it needs about 200 ft-lbs of torque as well to go with it. 250hp with 200+ tq, and your looking at the best car in many years for many years to come.
ehh the torque isn't that bad, its pretty punchy at low RPMs much more so than my "torquey" WRX until you get into boost
somanymods
idk why people look at specs when they can test drive it
and i bet, wrx feels sluggish off boost. hell fast on boost though
***** specs dont mean shit if it doesnt feel fast imo...
driving it is everything
Jared Tate Who the hell drives fast cars slow? You might think your driving an FRS fast until you pull up next to a fast car. reality check!
harlemkiid149 Plenty of people get 300+hp utes etc. and spend most of their time accelerating to 50km/h in the streets :) It's all about driving the car closer to the limits for some people. And not just in a straight line...
Great vid : )
I have a GT86, and I grew up where this was filmed (I think); it's an excellent road for the 86 and there are parts that I can take quicker than in my old S2000s, so good is the handling : )
I ca t believe how many ignorant people who hate the FRS/GT86 here... and how many that doesnt know shit about cqrs acting like they do...
Yeah, these are the coolest cars in the world.
Funny that Initial D's main character drives both an Impreza and an AE86, and that manga/anime is a decent contribution to the AE86's popularity.
Toyota's offering a Fujiwara Tofu Shop edition of the GT86 too ^-^
in the 3th movie takumi was driving the GT86 btw. and i think in the future the gt86 will be as popular as ae86 is now
You can all talk shit and say other cars are better, but you will never understand the magnificence of this car until you drive it yourself. As a PROUD owner, I can say it is simply perfection. Great review car throttle!
Ladies and gentlemen, Chuck Norris has spoken. And he owns a GT86.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I like this review... short and simple.
Always wanted a RX8 Mazda but the reliability issues put me off. The GT86 seems to be the same recipe, I like the idea that the car is built for handling and to be agile 😀
Im buying a brand new white brz soon. This car will be my baby for a a long time :)
Can't wait to get my own.
My uncle got the automatic version around the time they came out and it is just a truly magnificent car in every way!
When i got mine I chose auto as well... Regretted that decision ever since... LOL
Had mine for nearly a month now. Worth every penny, 150% fun driving!
Finally, a video that doesn't talk about how slow the car is. Good Job!👍
Just about to order the 2017 model of this. Excited doesn't even come close to describing how I'm feeling!
The GT86 actually has four traction control modes. The fourth one is sort of hidden.
1. On, default
2. Sports mode, sorta off but corrects a bit
3. "off", still corrects just a bit to keep you safe
4. Konami code mode, completely everything off
To do the 4th one, you need to warm your engine to operating temperature.
I am curious to know if they will drop a new shape in the future though.
come to Australia. you will be amazed how many 86/brz you can see in five minutes city driving ( at least 2).
I own a BRZ (Manual), happy to answer any questions for any people questioning if they should buy one :)
I for one completely agree with the review, the car is excellent and such a passionate joy everytime you enter the cockpit.
Hi cheeky what do you recommend an auto or manual
Bas van der Meij It’s the AE86’s spiritual successor.
Eggly Bagelface thank you
this guy said "Subaru Gt86" lmfaooo

Loving Lost in Las Vegas as the intro song
Proud owner since 2013.
Had many people say to me "why buy that when x car has more power".... that has got to be the least relevant argument imaginable. Especially when the "x car" is usually some kind of hatchback which, let's be honest' was designed to be a compromise between practicality and comfort.
Some people just want big numbers, I just want to drive - now leave me in peace.
It may have less power. But power doesn't count for jack-diddly-shit in twisty, winding roads and tracks. It's also a car that you can push to the limits on public roads more often. Have a nice day, Channy132! :D
its nice that some people here talk sense :)
Less is more on the race track
MrT3ryn I haven't tried any dual clutch cars so I don't know, sorry. You gotta go try it out at a dealer :-)
No worries man, yea defo planning on it I'm obsessed with the 86 aero lol
>automatic
>no-brainer
you're right
Auto is this car is actually slower tho.
I don't know where he from but here in cali that car is everywhere and very popular even since 2014 and before
I hope they continue to make the 86 till 20 years later so i can purchase that
love your channel!
10 yrs later still my dream car.. 10 yr slater still holds value,.. 10 yrs later still looks the best version. the new one just looks too different
Its got good handling, quickness and I bet its good on fuel too. Its only a 2 litre and is reliable too.
I already have a Toyota Celica.
Hopefully hard work will pay off in the future to get the GT86.
There fun cars!
I get 27 mpg on mine, lasts me about a week
I want one so bad. Glad you guys did a review!
You should do more car reviews
Great review!
Thanks Melker!
The exhaust sound is nostalgic because it is almost similar coming from an AE86.Try put in a track record and it will come out really fast
The girl who just goes "I haven't got a clue" was kinda pretty. Love this car though need to own one.
Nice review guys, but i still prefer way more my genesis
Own one, very happy with it.. handles awesome.. not very fast, but i don't need it to be, i have done breath mods, and will tune once out of storage.. best car I have owned ( owned five cars )
the birth of a very detailed legendary car
I can accept that the GT86 isn't the best track machine but it is the perfect sports car for the street.
Gt86 is like Phil Collins BRILLIANT!
Great video! Sooooo well made! Like!
In the process of upgrading my S14's entire suspension and converting to S15 front. Bring it on FR-S
the concept of this was actually called the Toyota FT-86 which stood for future Toyota 86, a reference to the AE86. The Larger FT-HS is actually the FT-1 concept better known as the new supra/2000gt.
Just bought one 😮💨😍😍😍🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Nice job guys
Cheers dude!
Whoever hates on this car either is just that, a hater, or has never driven one. I currently drive and own a '14 FR-S 6MT and love it. My last car was a single turbo '05 Mustang GT with a FULL suspension set up, and I still enjoy the FRS leaps and bounds more.
Great review and a iconic car:-)
If you tell me “but it only has 200 hp” all I can see is you are no driver and probably no car enthusiast because u cannot see the purpose of a car
8-6: the legend continues
The video title is right. That's because every vehicle is about 10 car lengths ahead. LOL, just ruffin' your feathers a bit.
Anson L 😂😂😂
Hahaha you got that right
Anson L if you bring up speed when you talk about the 86 you lost my interest
They are so popular here in Australia (the most popular transmission is the paddle shift) I want to get one with the extras like the huge spoiler paddle shift and the bronze metallic paint
Sooo it's a Subaru with Toyota badges... apparently there's some talk about a brz sti. Should be interesting!
and scion FRS
karikajan sri GT86/BRZ/FRS are literally the same car. made in the same factory.
with different badges, slightly different interior, and suspension settings
Arian Winanto Don't forget bumpers and exhausts.
WRX STI: for when it snows. (clip of the WRX sliding through snow)
BRZ STI: for when it doesn't (clip of the BRZ sliding on pavement)
boom- there is the marketing advertisement.
Just wait for someone to make a manga where a delivery driver uses this.
Why the fuck would any one think that looks like a supra
I have to say it is quite amazing how hate-filled and ignorant people are about this glorious car. No matter what car forum you go to, people are always hating on this car. As an owner, I just don't understand why people hate this car so much... Oh well, fuck the haters.
I would get this car because I love handling, but I love it with a combo of speed! And I can't be slower than my mom in her Porsche Cayenne S!
well you can supercharge it or turbocharge...!!! the engine does well with 5 pounds of boost without changing any engine part :P
Auras Secuianu Thats true, but how much hp will it be producing, and the warranty will be gone
lol my mums Accord V6 will leave this car.
zlyable please explain? pretty sure an accord weighs way more than a gt86...
ninteh The Accord V6 is pretty porky, but it's also got a not-inconsiderable amount of power. The recent models all have over 270HP, the current model has about 300.
Surprised to see no mention of the GT86/AE86 connection (Do a search for "AE86 Corolla Sprinter"... The Sprinter was a rear-wheel-drive Corolla designed to be the base model for the AE86 racing circuit in Japan back in the mid to late '80's).
and the 2000GT
This is the comment I came here for.
The gt86 is obviously named to honour the ae86.
I'd have thought a website dedicated to all things car related would realise that. But then again they are all a bunch of rich kid posers who don't care about anything made before 2005.
Already planning on getting it
Love that intro!
that Xzibit joke had me tearing LMFAOOOOOO
I think its a good looking car it may not be the quickest car of the line but fun isnt always about speed its about how the car makes you feel , Yes buying 2nd hand maybe able to get yourself an M3 or Evo X which will blow it away but they dont come with 3/5 year warrenty and cost a hell of a lot more to insure and keep running ie Fuel costs, tyres , servicing .
Why are you asking a guy that draws his eyebrows about cars lol 3:28
This car is cool and I'm glad they made a sequel to the ae86, but you can't beat the originals
I love the ae86. But in real life, now... they aren't even close are they? I mean even just in terms of safety... I would rather be in about 10 crashes at 60mph in the GT86 vs 1 crash in the AE86.
There are 4 traction control modes. ON, VSC SPORT, OFF and COMPLETELY OFF.. The COMPLETELY OFF is done by the "pedal dance"... No more GHOST VSC.
im going to miss this car... because we know its going to go where all other affordable fun cars go.... the cancelled project line
Time to start saving all of my money now.
This car is the absolute best to enter the supercar world!
this car was built for the "bendy bits" as you brits call it.
it's not going to have that top end speed, nor even the handling you think it should (blame those prius tires, put on there for that exact reason) but it will nose around those turns like an angel.
put some fatter pirelli's on there, and you have a superb handling machine; that will be hard to break lose even with the traction controls off.
it's a wonderful drive, plus with subaru and toyota''s sister company scion making parts, customizing one will be easier than a honda in a few years.
this car is so well marketed that even journalists have no clue what to make of it yet.
it's only drawback? the price. yes, you can buy more car for the same amount, you could even buy a new mini and say it has just as much fun in it as the BRZ/FRS/GT86: but for all that, you wont get a reliable boxer, rear wheel drive, manual, damn near perfectly poised and balanced roadster. And I feel this is more of a roadster, then the sport coupe that is it's legacy; the AE86 Trueno, also known as the corolla everywhere else.
Is the GT86 a car you can work on yourself? Like changing brakes and all that stuff? Thinking of selling my Celica GT.
Amber57499 yes there's a huge aftermarket
No, I mean is it filled with electronic shit? I heard you can't even change taillights and wheels on modern Audis and similar brands without special tools that are way too expensive. And I also don't like this electronic suspension stuff, sounds like it'll break too soon.
@@Amber57499 I think you can.
Toyotas CEO said himself that GT86 and new Supra were made to be easy to tune and modify.
So I think it's ok.
It's 2019 and I bought a brand new one (manual obvs)
Honestly, the buyers remorse went away the moment I started driving it.
BMW? All sorts of electronics on the dash making me feel like Im not in a car anymore.
need a gt86 in my life
+JustTahmid just bougt one yesterday! (second hand though). Just go for it.
he said something about a turbo. it doesnt have a stock turbo right?
Im happy it only got 200hp. Taxes are too high for high power cars. Can always tune it afterwards to get some more horses
Driving a toyota celica from 2000 atm. Have to say that I want to know how the gt86 rides.
best car for daily driving
Yup, I love my GT86!
It seems as if "driver's car" is a title used when a car doesn't make enough power to get the driver into trouble.
