It is good, but I think the best was /Drive, Chris Harris comparing the then new GT86 against a 370 and a well used Cayman. He was though already very pro the GT86 after driving the car at the track in Spain (pre-launch). Another good one of late, was on Autocar, where they were really comparing the the Alfa 4C with the Cayman, but the GT86 was added for "what the heck" - suffice to say the 4C did not fair well.
Great review, I was wondering about the history, I knew Subaru, loved it and that Scion/Toyota one of them came up with the idea, but overall, what I think Subaru needs to do next is their iconic performance thing to do. Make an sti edition. The only complaints I've heard is a lack of power after a while, so a small to mid-sized turbo option putting it around 250-300HP would be perfect.
It appears that it won't be an Alfa Romeo anymore, but an FIAT/Abarth roadster instead. www.motorauthority.com/news/1090652_alfa-romeo-may-miss-out-on-mazda-mx-5-based-roadster-report
Well I have seen the GT 86 no room in the back? ( like inches only) and RWD I am now a confirmed fan of FWD; they are less likely to do a 360°( like my Lexus used to) and you can take them up to the mountains in winter snow!
ianiva & 888COMPAQ true that, I thought of it as I was writing this comment, but still is a video of GT86. GT86=drift acording to internet. Man I love this car, wish I could spend at least a day with it.
It's audiably chugging below 2k rpm. It doesn't like low revs and you have to get to the top of the engine for the power. I have no idea if this is a normal sports car thing though, the 2k rpm thing. But most sport cars do have their peek power higher up. I usually shift around 3k, anything lower doesn't really have enough torque.
Crossed Even more powerful cars are not that happy at low revs. My Focus ST doesn't even like to be driven hard below 2-2.5k and I'm making well over 300tq.
This and the 370z are the only affordable cars I’d consider buying. In fact I have a 2018 brz right now. None of that duped up economy all purpose car crap. Performance for the sake of performance. Chassis designed to be one thing from the ground up. Pure.
This is no doubt a car with great balance but it is missing some power. I know there are tuning kits on offer but imagine how amazing it would be with the STi's engine. The chassis and the car world deserve something like that.
Concept, execution and design impressed me....but my only negative is the low HP and torque! This would have to be under $20k to convince me that it's better than my Speed3. Dealerships tried to sell it for $28k. My MS3 was $23k...and it's a beast to drive...can put hair on your ballz. The BRZ really needs 220-240 hp.
I'm currently in the market for a new car and I love the 86, its one of my dream cars. However its so expensive for its target market, I could drop £7,000 on a deposit then £270 a month. Or a fiesta ST 3 door is more practical, faster and just as much fun on a B road and £200 a month on lease.
The Fiesta St is just as much fun to drive as the BRZ. From a dead stop the BRZ is faster. The Fiesta makes way more torque but lacks the top end to keep up with the BRZ/86.
Great vid, like the details about the history. Can see avid GT86 in the comments below. Anyone have any great after market solutions/suggestion for the torque dip?
Ayrton Atif BRZ STI's exist, but all that's different is an exhaust, wheels, and various cosmetic differences. No turbo. However, these cars take boost really well and there's plenty of Aftermarket support for boost :)
I'm glad these cars came out. It got Mazda to stop fucking around and make something better. Something that won't let the twins take Mazda's thunder. Can't wait to see the engine options on the new MX-5. Also I hope Mazda's move makes the twins give us something even better! :))
+keanehgz Exactly what I don't understand. 25 years ago Toyota could produce a 20 valve inline 4 that produced 240hp and revved to 11000RPM, why then did they look for a boxer engine?
I can't believe no reviews of these cars have mentioned the car that spiritually spawned them, the original AE86. Why did Toyota even look for a boxer engine when 25 years ago they could produce a 20 valve inline 4 that produced 240hp and revved to 11000RPM.
No you weren't. I also don't understand why they needed Subaru's boxer engines, but I figure it has to with the cost of research and development for a brand new engine since Toyota doesn't really have any sporty engine in their current fleet. An engine from 25 years ago doesn't meet modern emission regulations. Which is why they're not able to use it (let alone the fuel consumption). But those are just my thoughts though.
yeah but Chris Harris is a car reviewer who goes everywhere sideways in the real world when you want mid range torque for overtaking and smooth getaways the 370z is way nicer to drive
apache1234657 The 370 weighs 500 pounds more than the twins. The Z drives like a good sedan not a sports car. The G37 is better driving and more practical for not much more money. The rear seats in the GT86 / BRZ work for small adults or kids or you can have a full size person sit side saddle. You can also fold the seats flat for more storage space. The BRZ has a better driving position and far more room for the driver than the Z. Yes the Z has 130 more hp and half the real world fuel economy of the twins. Oh yes in the states the Z cost $5000 more to start.
yeah but the gt86 sucks in the real world because you have to thrash it if you want to overtake someone, if you want a fuel efficient car with lots of space buy a prius
apache1234657 No you dont. You can pass in 6th gear, It is a 2700 pound car. About the same as a corolla. As long as you weigh under 250 pounds there is plenty of speed to be had without winding the pee out of the engine. I am 6.5 feet tall. I cant fit in the z. I can wear a hat in the BRZ. The BRZ handles far better than the Z also. If you want strait line speed. By a Mustang. You will be able to buy one this year. 420hp with the V8 330 hp with the Turbo 4.
I test drove a slightly used FR-S, and am now absolutely hooked on these cars, and MUST own one!
Had my GT86 for less than a week. Its so much fun to drive on the road.
Thanks for this excellent review! My new GT 86 will be delivered in April 2019! Absolut happy about!
I like it how you fully explained how Toyota and Subaru worked together to create this car :)
I own an 86 and absolutely love it. Knew the origin story but there were a couple of bits that were new.
Thanks for making this video
Love my BRZ, only downside is the gearbox witch is not very happy when cold.
How does it feel when it's cold?
Second gear doesn't always want to slide in, or be chunky with a slam. When it get's some heat it gets smooth and snappy.
No1 cares…
Alright, thanks for the response!
Wasteman Man, you give yourself +1 for that comment? ;)
thee Mitchi And I gave him -1, Wasteman suits him well.
I watched many reviews of these cars but it is the first time I heard so many details about their inception, props.
The dubstep was highly unnecessary.
I love my 86
Best GT86 BRZ video I've seen
+1

After the Drive+ fiasco you are my favorite channel, don't let me down XCAR.
I second this comment.
Good video. Very well thought out.
Aren't Mazda and Alfa Romeo working together on the new MX-5/Spider?
not anymore. FCA decided to produce the new "spider", based on the MX-5, with Fiat or Abarth brand, because all Alfa Romeo must be made in Italy.
It appears that it won't be an Alfa Romeo anymore, but an FIAT/Abarth roadster instead.

Great review Drew!!

Great video, and great camera work
A Toyota GT86 review without any sideways action?
It's not exactly a review
This video is more of a story than a review.
ianiva & 888COMPAQ true that, I thought of it as I was writing this comment, but still is a video of GT86. GT86=drift acording to internet. Man I love this car, wish I could spend at least a day with it.
Never knew this story, thanks
His accent is half american with a tad of english, it confuses my ears lol
Great video for a great car. Real fun to drive!
Fun fact! In Finland, the GT86 is over 10 000 euros more than the BRZ. And I have no idea why, since in my opinion Subaru is more desirable brand.
2000 CDN
more in Canada.
I call it the Toyabaru.
And I call it the Subayota.
Toyburu!
TheMcShay I like Subayota!
i just call it the 86......
Love the BRZ!
I heard that the engine doesn't provide that much power until 500refs before changing up. They should really offer this car with a Turbo version.
Day to day this car is fine. I have had mine for 18 months now. It is my only car, and it has plenty of power, in the real world.
noblewolf111 You drive this in the winter?
Brandon Segave I do, but I live in Australia. In winter the coldest it gets in my area is 6 degrees celsius. I dont have to deal with ice and snow.
It's audiably chugging below 2k rpm. It doesn't like low revs and you have to get to the top of the engine for the power.

How much does these two cars cost in the UK?
This is no doubt a car with great balance but it is missing some power. I know there are tuning kits on offer but imagine how amazing it would be with the STi's engine. The chassis and the car world deserve something like that.

What about the Scion FRS???
Someone please add a turbo and paddle shifters to that GT86
I'm currently in the market for a new car and I love the 86, its one of my dream cars.

Test drive both of them. Both of FiST and BRZ are such great cars that no matter which one you choose, you'll love it.
The only thing that is missing in this car is a turbo from hks
Great vid, like the details about the history. Can see avid GT86 in the comments below. Anyone have any great after market solutions/suggestion for the torque dip?
Forgot the Scion FRS
I want one soooo bad...
How about build one with a turbo. Why stop here, I would LOVE to see a BRZ STi, am I the only one who would buy that?
Nah mate you aint the only one who is willing to buy BRZ STi. Lets hope they make a proper bonkers version soon.
Ayrton Atif BRZ STI's exist, but all that's different is an exhaust, wheels, and various cosmetic differences. No turbo. However, these cars take boost really well and there's plenty of Aftermarket support for boost :)
***** im not sure if its on sale from Subaru as a proper STi.
I'm glad these cars came out. It got Mazda to stop fucking around and make something better. Something that won't let the twins take Mazda's thunder. Can't wait to see the engine options on the new MX-5. Also I hope Mazda's move makes the twins give us something even better! :))
The problem with this car, it's the engine.. Not the power, but the torque, after all my test. It's really the conclusion that I have
If only there were more differentiation between the two.. Subaru have a typical boxer-turbo engine, and Toyota have a higher revving NA engine.
I like turtles.
Vegard Claussen Lmao, get a turtle, and get a life, talk to that turtle instead of posting irrelevant and non constructive comments.. #rekt
Vegard Claussen speirs is awesome

They should have given it 200 bhp/tonne... And 8500 rpm. No turbo though, kills the feel of the car.
Little underpowered but aftermarket has taken care of that department :)
I can't believe no reviews of these cars have mentioned the car that spiritually spawned them, the original AE86. Why did Toyota even look for a boxer engine when 25 years ago they could produce a 20 valve inline 4 that produced 240hp and revved to 11000RPM.
You've watched too much Initial D
But was I wrong?

I prefer the Nissan 370z but I like the look of these two.
yeah the 370 has 130 more hp its a no brainer, oh and the rear seats on a gt86 look useless
yeah but Chris Harris is a car reviewer who goes everywhere sideways in the real world when you want mid range torque for overtaking and smooth getaways the 370z is way nicer to drive

they got famous because of the ae86 i think
McLaren and Aston Martin :D
for one i dont call it cheap, i still find these cars expensive but hey, i guess that's just me.
Why should we (the clients) chose between handling and power? That engine is boring and the chassis deserves more.
BRZ 😍😍😍😍
What kinda accent does this dude have? Just curious.
Kiwi.
Vegard Claussen
LOL, he's obviously English and the cars have UK plates!
YEApopcornBABY Scottish
@twinkmaster2 They are the exact same car
I would like to see a Nissan Gtr designed by Alfa Romeo...
I guess the aftermarket will have to call it the "Alfa-Omega".
I would take a perfect S2000 and save my money. and still be faster.
you don't get it dude
It's hard to take you seriously with that sweater on
might want to turn a bit down on the dubstep wubwub bib bib bob
so which did Drew like best? which one do you like?
McLaren+BMW=Instant Classic
I will
Probably buy the second gen when it will have more than 200hp too slow
Stfu
long time mitsubishi, then now toyota lol
Toyota fucked up with this 86. An iconic 86 - with a Subi engine... ??? Why not use the 2jz ??? Anyway, I prefer the AE86 any day of the week
Excelleny
Toyota should have done this by themselves.
Mazda x Mitsubishi
brzed
IMPOSSIBRU
Too little everyday torque....me no like
BMW could show audi how to make a RWD car. haha, not in a million years
"Two heads better than one"? That's just sexist! :)
Moaning about power equals missing the point. Did you not watch the video??
