I was trying to hold out for it but ended up getting the canon r5. I think that because im not going to be too heavy into video or I can use 4k with no issues. I actually think that the r5 will be better for me because of the ibis I will be able to get decent handheld shots
@@patresinger I also thought about just getting an R5 and an external recorder, but my main use case is shooting concerts in full length and the extra quality in 8k for longer periods of time would make the Ninja V+ necessary, which makes that combo 600€ more expensive than the R5C. I know the SSDs are cheaper, but the Angelbird 2TB is also pretty good value for money. Since I also shoot a lot of 50p, the biggest downside from the R5 was the missing 4k50 HQ due to missing 8k50, that is why the combo can't give me what I mostly use and why I ordered the R5C.
@@patrick.munich Hey man, thanks for the reply. If you shoot video mainly, also in concerts, I, also would go for the R5C. It is video-first and gives you all the goods of professional cinema cameras, compared to the R5. And, if you want to be with a small setup and without an external monitor, the R5C for sure is also great.
Canon suggests the newer LP-E6NH Battery , as they have 10% more capacity than the classic LPs - but I guess it works, like the R5 also with batteries from different suppliers.
Definitely interesting, btw is there any digital stabilisation at all in photo mode at all, I know it sounds like a silly question hehe, but I am an R5 user and was just wondering if it had, cos for me I do need some stabilisation for photos
Hi! No silly questions here. Yes, you have digital stabilisation in the camera, just no IBIS - Canon says that they removed it because of heat AND also because you could have wobbling if IBIS and the stabilisation of the lens work together. The DS works well especially if you have a stabilised lens.
Thanks for this review! I guess in Photo mode (not burst mode) the fan never turns on, so battery life in photo mode is approx. the same as for the R5 ?
Hi Simon, thanks so much. The sound is just a bit more "full" - I think because of the different, bigger body, the sound has more space to expand, like a body of a guitar it somehow amplifies it (only in the mechanical shutter mode). And with battery life in photography, I haven't had the chance to properly compare it. What I think is, that the battery life is almost equal if the fan is set to "none". There are 3 different types of fan modes in video, but I have no idea, if, for instance the fan kicks in when you take burst photos for longer.
Hallo! The batterie life is better in 4K modes, I have answered this before - here is the long version: Yes. Battery life is better as the cpu doesn‘t need to do so many calculations and writing data. But it is not 1/4 of when shooting 8K. My guess is about 40-50% longer (but please don‘t hold me accountable for that). It also always depends on the file format you are shooting with. Still, I think that battery life is not the real problem as you can add the battery pack and get 3 hours of shooting. And if you take any other cinema camera with 8K, you are used to bigger batteries. My only real downside is the autofocus in certain modes.
Yes, it is a bummer. The AF works well in 4K / 120fps but not with face or eye detection. I don't really understand why this is an issue, but that is just the fact. It is the downside of this camera really. But I guess you get the upside of having a cinema camera with great photo capabilities.
I haven't tried it in burst mode when shooting photos, so I don't know if it will switch on. My guess is, that you barely will even hear the fan if you are only shooting stills. AND, you can always turn the fan off at any point.
Hi Patrick, I’m considering the R5C and wondering… does it also eat through a lot of batteries if shooting 4K 24fps, or only at 8k resolution and the higher frame rates? Also, when you say if shooting photo first go with the R5, however my question is… aren’t they pretty much the same on the photo end except for the IBIS? I really trying to figure out if I should go for the C. Thanks for any insight!
Hi K, the battery usage heavily relies on how much data the processor hast to capture and write on the memory card. So the lower in resolution you go, the less battery it needs. The only two question you should be asking yourself is, "DO I NEED RAW LT" and "Do I want the Pro-Cinema Menu"? I said that you should stick with the R5 if you are photo first as I think the R5 is the better photo camera: Smaller + IBIS. And the R5C is just a really great videocamera that can shoot great photos aswell. Depending on your use, it is the one or the other. Let me know any more thoughts.
@@patresinger thanks so much, makes sense. I'm leaning towards the R5C over the R5 bc I don't feel the loss of IBIS to be a huge deal breaker, and what you get on the video end for the additional $600 that you pay for the R5C is quite significant in my opinion. The stills are 45MP on both which is great. I'm still on the fence, however the R5C could be the cam I go for. Thank you.

Hi, please don't have background muzak when you are talking to the camera. You would n't do it at a presentation, please don't do it here, it makes following what you are saying rather difficult - at least for me. No doubt some others will chip in say it is fine and wonderful.
Hi and thanks for this review (on this pre-production model). 12 mn of recording time ??? far not sufficient at all 😳. I hope the released model will give more recording time otherwise, this R5C will be worst than the BMPCC was…
Hi Ed, I agree, the battery time is not great at all. But what I would for sure do is, getting the external power bank which gives you so much shooting time that it is like a full on cinema camera. If you are used to setups even with an external monitor, cables go out of your camera everywhere and one more small USB-C cable is no biggie I guess. But getting 8K in RAW from a camera this size is still impressive. What I have mentioned in the review is, that it would be awesome to have the 4K in RAW, but that is not possible as the sensor needs to be read out entirely in order to produce 8K.
Do you think about buying the Canon R5C? Let me know your thoughts.

awesome to see another food and product video shooter! Cheers from PR!
Just subbed to your channel!
Appreciate it!
Nice review!
Great video your audio is amazing
Are we still able to use this camera with a Blount battery ? Just to get longer battery life instead of the one canon suggested

Man I really wish there was a way to shoot uncropped 4k raw
Yes man, me too. I am curious about the raw lite for the C70 that will come out soon. It maybe lift the C70 to a really great camera.

In Video Crop Mode the R5c will shoot 5.9k RAW with Atomos Ninja V+. FYI... nearly 1/2 the file size.
