Excellent video as always! I have an EOSR and have been waiting for 3 years to upgrade to a better mirrorless. The heating issues of the R5 (and the fact that the production company I work for has one) made me pause on buying one but this looks INCREDIBLE for us hybrid. I get the issue with no IBIS for stills, however, my EOSR and NONE of the DSLR cameras I have shot stills with has EVER had IBIS so that is not a deal killer for me. These are the features I was waiting for.... no camera is perfect, but the R5c checks all the boxes for my workflow. Moving on from a c100, EOS R and Sony A7iii. Thanks for your review. -Mike
Might finally bail on my Sony stuff. Shot Canon forever until they fell behind, then got an A7S2, A73 and now an A7S3 which I absolutely love. But I do prefer Canon color and I still have 7 awesome L lenses since I still use my 5D3 for stills. I could get at least $6k for my A7S3 and 3 lenses, and have enough $ leftover to get some CFExpress cards and a cage. Might be time to switch back.
Thank you for this great first look, Carl. What I am most concerned about at this point is the AF performance in Cine Mode, compared to the R5. The Cine OS doesn’t seem to incorporate some of the AF features I’ve come to love on the R5, such as animal eye-AF and Touch and Drag AF. I’m also concerned that AF may be slower to respond than the AF on the R5. Please test this when you can!
Another video on RUclips has started this rumor. Would be very interested if you could reach out to Cannon to either confirm or deny this. If they actually downgraded the AF system I think that would be a bad decision. Great review as always!
Hey Carl, Newsshooter mentioned that in video mode there is only DPAF I not DPAF II. Is that true? That would be kind of a downgrade in terms of AF? Great video btw. Probably one of the best channel on RUclips! Greetings Furkan
I don’t think that’s quite right. Canon have 2 AF systems, a stills one for the R5 etc. and a cinema one for the C70. This has the stills one in stills mode and video one in video mode. Thanks! Glad you liked the video Carl
Great video! Does the R5C work with the new RF dual fish eye VR lens? Are we able to use that lens and shoot 8K 60fps? See, THAT would be a game changer for Vr content...
@@ProAVTV Thanks Carl, please do make a video about that would you? And about the VR post workflow, since nothing is really out there and I and several others are struggling (happily) to work with this new lens and camera set up...
Really? I think it’s a bit dull… 😉 Everyone, meet Liam, one of our sales account managers and a very talented wildlife photographer who has kindly populated the showroom with his work! Carl
Great insightful thoughts on the significance of R5c and I totally agree at $4500 R5c has done a permanent move at defining what a "budget" cinema camera can do. One thing is though, has Canon opened the new multishoe protocol to third party or only Tascam has access to it so far? I don't like the shape and layout of tascam unit, worrying about putting too much stress on the hotshoe overtime once you plug one or two XLR cables in. Hope Rode and Sennheiser could have their takes on this multishoe soon.
You say that when using the power base you get full 8k60fps with the dummy battery insert. That means the R5C battery connection can support full 8k60fps functionality AF and all and do not have to have an external power connection plugged into the side of the camera?
i love the false colors and scopes on my Ninja V on my R6 - leaning in to figure out the small scope of the R5C might be problematic on its LED screen.
Very helpful, indeed; thank you! To your suggestion at the end, I would be keen to see a comparison of the R5 C with the FX6. The two models have striking similarities and differences on paper -- what are they like in real-world settings? To that end, I'd be particularly interested to see autofocus comparison, as I've found the FX6 autofocus engine to be remarkable: can the R5 C hold up?
i would like to know how it performs as a photographers camera. There is a difference in video-rendering image quality with the R5 so maybe it is different for pictures too. There is no video out there about stills perspective
Monkeypixels is saying this camera (R5C) is using DPAF I for video instead of DPAF II that is used for AF on R5. The implication is that the R5C has inferior Video AF compared to R5 Video AF. According to Monkeypixels when you switch back to Photo on R5C then it goes back to DPAF II. Any comment or will you be doing a direct comparison soon on AF between the two?
It’s not as simple as version 1 and version 2 Canon have two systems designed for video and stills. R5 has always had the stills one, even in video. And the stills one has some extra features over the video one. Carl
@@ProAVTV It kinda is that simple though right? DPAF1 (aka version 1) for video, and DPAF2 (aka version 2) for stills. Whereas with the regular R5 it's DPAF2 for both.
No ND nor ibis and min HDMI, I can't fully gasp the advantage of this camera over the r5. False colors zebras and such I already have with the R5 and an external monitor. What am I missing?
I am definitely getting one. I bought the Canon 1Dx mark iii an year ago for my production unit. This can easily replace that or be another addition in here!
Few years ago i remember buying 1dxii for more money and not a lot of features (and sold it a year after) and now this r5c packed so much features in a well-thought pricing. this is the next step in camera revolution. The true hybrid that we’ve been waiting for. Canon did its homework this time, just wow
Without IBIS I wish it had internal ND's. I guess it's not possible with still having a mechanical shutter in there. Perhaps a future RF cinema zoom with IS could have ND's in the lens? That would fix the big drawbacks and make the R5C the true hybrid it claims to be.
@@yanduval7172 True. That's definitely more practical than front filters but still not as fast and easy as pressing a button (I do ENG/documentary and not as much directed/planned/prepared shoots where I have time to fiddle around with filters). And unless you're a long time Canon shooter it would be really annoying to buy EF lenses to adapt when the RF lenses is one of the biggest appeals of going into the RF system.
Is there a specific dummy battery you use for the Anton bower titan base? I was trying to use one specifically that connected to the battery with the D Tap port and the dummy battery we bought didn’t work on the R5c, but does work for the regular R
I really wish they'd taken advantage of the added depth of the camera to make the EVF tilt upwards a bit, like a true camcorder. There's enough room behind the hotshoe for it to clear.
Canon is back! Kinda. Honestly I haven't been impressed Canon in recent years, but this camera really could change my opinion. As a side note: it really shows how well Canon does UI/UX here - so many buttons, and amazing menus in both photo and video modes! I'm still a bit sad that they haven't come up with this sooner. So many Canon DSLR users upgraded to the R5, because they like the brand, Canon's colors and image quality fully aware of the fact that they will have to deal with the known overheating issues. Canon seemed to downplay this for really long time. And suddenly they came up with this... I think there should be a buy-back scheme. Not 100% of the price but at least something.
Thanks Canon for giving such a great option for cinematographers! One thing that I wanted to know is if the battery life with the LP-E6NH is different when using it in photo mode. Does the video mode and the photo mode calculates the same amount of battery life. This question might seem to be a stupid question, but since both modes are completely separate in the same body, and the fact that we can control the fan, does it gives the same battery information and capacity?? Is the battery life capacity in photo mode only is the same as the R5?? Or it is the same in video mode even if we use it only in photo mode?? I know the camera is more video-centric and has 8K RAW modes, but logically taking JPEG and RAW stills is not as demanding as taking these big video files with the LP-E6NH. Maybe I am wrong with that statement but wanted to have some clarification about that.
Just got my R5c today, Oddly in Video the Battery runs out in roughly 1h (recording 4k xavc), and you cant turn it on in Video anymore. BUT in Photo Mode the Battery stills shows 31% left, which is really really odd to see. That there is 1/3 juice left, but its seems not enough for video - cant quite wrap my head around it. But hopes this helps
Great video Carl! The price point is the biggest draw of this camera for me. It is very unlike Canon to be so price aggressive, but I am all here for it!
Although I would have love to see IBIS with some compromises like not being able to use it in highest frame rate modes or with some certain lenses. IBIS not actually being there is sad.
No IBIS isn't a processing power limitation. They purposefully didn't include it as some high end productions will not use a camera with a floating sensor. That is why no other cinema eos cameras have IBIS as well. Carl
@@Marlow925 Um no. Totally false. IBIS MATTERS big-time when shooting stills, unless you’re shooting on a tripod in a well lit space (and if that’s your shooting space and don’t need IBIS that’s fine, you’d probably be better off buying a 90D or Eos R or RP, and buying a separate cinema cam like the C70 for video work).
@@CrisisActionTeam So you didn't watch that review then, I gather. IBIS has not been around in the Canon space until the R5 and R6 were launched. And we got along just find with IS in the lenses. The R5c additionally has Digital IS, which complements the IS in the lens now. For stills, that's more than sufficient. Additionally, the R5c is a video centric camera and floating sensors are seen as a liability in the movie industry. If you're so hooked on having IBIS, then the R5 is what you need.
The battery life you're quoting seems waaay off compared to what I'm seeing on mine. My R5c's batt life is horrendous. I get 25 mins max record time at 4K. While shooting events where I only record a few clips at a time, each battery lasts about an hour. Again this isn't even with continuous recording.
Great video thanks! The micro HDMI port and the two different card slots - they just cannot stop themselves from gimping anything that isn’t one of their official C-I-N-E-M-A cameras. Always some gimp thrown in there to force people to buy their cinema stuff (or, maybe more likely, to force people to buy Sony instead).
amazing video as always carl i always come to you for more info i do have one question with the 8k60 what are some other battery source we can buy thats smaller and will fit on a tripod that will allow the 8k60
So you will actually get 8K 60 on an LPE6 battery, but it will limit some other features like som lens functionality and use of the tascam unit etc. due to power draw. I got Iris control and AF with an EF lens though. But for other battery options, there are PD powerbanks like the one Anker make, theres the coreSWX powerbase edge and Anton Bauer Titon Base that I mention towards the end of this video, or a Vlock system of some kind. Carl
Hi, thank you for sharing this interesting video. I have a question please: can you tell me which zoom lens I can buy? Would I like a 24-105mm or more to make 4K documentaries? Thank you.
Hi Carl. Ah ha! I'm interested. Saw a hint about it a few days ago but did not really believe it. I need to think about placing a deposit. Now, what questions to ask? Well, does the BG-R10 battery grip fit and if so does it extend recording times? Or is a new style of grip required? The only other thing I would really like to see for it would be a Sony style variable ND driven off the extra RF contacts. Any info about drop in variable ND filters - one that went down to zero ND for example? I understand why IBIS has had to be taken out, some 'shake' handling tests would be much appreciated by me but this is so much easier to mount on smaller gimbals, if only they took out vertical shaking........
Yes, BG-R10 works perfectly. Agreed, a electronic variable ND inside a mount would be fantastic. No ND option like that goes clear without swinging out of the way though. And theres no space for that in a mount. Carl
What does the standard battery provide with 8K and RF lenses? What is the cutoff for when external power is required? What are examples of external power sources?
This needs more testing. I didn’t realise it could do it while we had the RF lenses on hand, but I can get 8K 50p with an EF lens with iris control and AF on an internal battery. Which isn’t bad! For external power options you could use the power base edge or titon base which i show in this video, or a USB PD power bank, or mains cable of course. Carl
Thanks for ur content my question: for my understanding is that the r5 sensor is more like (4x3) is bigger in hight then the sensor of the c500 (16x9) is it possible to use the full sensor of the R5c? would be amazing for anamorphic shooting and would it make so much more unique for anamorphic & multi format shooting Greetings and thanks a lot
@@ProAVTV Were you able to test it under those conditions? I would love to know if the lens autofocus and battery still work even if not officially supported. Thanks!
@@robertcrain9849 I don't have access to a battery grip unfortunately. However the camera is actually letting me record 8K 50p with just the internal LPE6 battery and I am getting autofocus with an EF lens and standard mount adapter Carl
Would love to see if a speedbooster would work with this camera, so you could shoot at super35 mode and get a 5.9K resolution with the extra stop of light?
Got mine today, and yes you can use the Canon 0,71 Speedbooster with it incl getting the extra stop of light, (got some vignetting with 24-105 in full frame mode) but really handy in s35 and s16 crop modes
OMG how can it call True Hybrid when it completely turn off and on when we switch to Photo to Video | Video to Photo? doesn't work for Run and gun type of shoots!
Well it only takes a few seconds, I wouldn't say it doesn't work! It's just about priorities. If instant changing is important, then R5, R3, A1, S1H etc. are the cameras for you. If not, this will do a better job in the video mode. Carl
Not sure it’s for me. After using cameras like the bmpcc6k pro, filming on mirrorless is hard. But I may buy a canon r5. My eos r is chugging as my photo business picks up
I could understand why Canon decided to strip away IBIS on the R5C as it was terrible on wider lenses with the R5. But in doing so and still raising the price seems a bit aggressive... love to know your thoughts on the pricing decision.
I think its a fantastic price. What else on the market gets you these features for this price? Yes they took away the IBIS, but they also added a lot (MI shoe, Timecode, Fan, Tally, XFAVC, Video menus and the tools that come with it, etc.) Carl
Still no implementation to record the files to external disk with the USB C port, which would make a lot of practical sense also given the massive Mb/s rate.
Well done Canon for (hopefully) starting to bring out cameras that push the technology, rather than cameras that are hobbled to protect more expensive models. As a 'Sony' person, i won't be buying this camera however as the Sony is having such issues with manufacturing the FX6 as we speak and there's such a massive waiting list, i could see people maybe go for this R5c. Its been such a long time since i filmed anything with a Canon camera though and i've pretty much gone full E-mount 😂😂
Very true, I can see people changing from Sony to Canon for this. But at the end of the day, Sony make fantastic cameras too! Its a good time for cameras from either brand! Carl
@@ProAVTV Very much doubtful people will switch from brand x to brand y anymore, especially with how good the ML glass is on say Nikon, Canon, Sony and capture devices are, example Sony A1.
Good luck with the micro hdmi. If you break it, be prepared to pay to change the whole motherboard.... Very glad the EVF stay unlike Sony FX3 which is a totally bummer.
If you use EF lenses you can effectively give it ND filters with their drop in filter mount adapter. But yes, internal ND filters would be a fantastic addition. Hopefully we will start to see them (perhaps electronic Variable ND systems) in small cameras like this over the next few years. Until then though, theres always the C70! Carl
@@ProAVTV Disagree - then What's the point and advantage of RF lens when you have to revert back to older optics EF (obsolete mount - same as Nikon F and also EOS M (when RF APS cameras come out) and adaptor so you can use ND filters with it

Finally a hybrid FF mirroless that can do both stills and video. I really hate bringing 2 cameras on set, No SDI output huh? That's a shame canon! HDMI/SDI is the norm these days! I got my RX/TX receivers that really on a live feed for the director's monitor. 7/10 🤔
Theres always pro's and con's ! Some off the top of my head: Full size HDMI port, better EVF and screen, better extreme high ISO performance, different look and image quality (subjective as to which is better) Carl

These are the features I was waiting for.... no camera is perfect, but the R5c checks all the boxes for my workflow. Moving on from a c100, EOS R and Sony A7iii. Thanks for your review. -Mike
Glad the video helped! This will be a huge upgrade from the C100, EOS R and A7 III
Carl
Hey Carl,
Newsshooter mentioned that in video mode there is only DPAF I not DPAF II. Is that true? That would be kind of a downgrade in terms of AF?
Great video btw. Probably one of the best channel on RUclips!
Greetings
Furkan
I don’t think that’s quite right. Canon have 2 AF systems, a stills one for the R5 etc. and a cinema one for the C70. This has the stills one in stills mode and video one in video mode.
Thanks! Glad you liked the video
Carl
Thanks for the review. Please do a comparison (R5c vs bmpcc 6k pro).
9:55 you can rotate the screen without hitting USB and HDMI cables when they are plugged it! Small upgrade, but I love it!
Absolutely! That’s just one of many small touches which make a big difference
Carl
Great video! Does the R5C work with the new RF dual fish eye VR lens? Are we able to use that lens and shoot 8K 60fps? See, THAT would be a game changer for Vr content...
Yes it does. I didn't use it personally as I have no experience with VR. But from what I hear it will be pretty revolutionary for VR content
Carl
@@ProAVTV Thanks Carl, please do make a video about that would you? And about the VR post workflow, since nothing is really out there and I and several others are struggling (happily) to work with this new lens and camera set up...
I love that Owl photograph in the background at the start of the video. Where can I get one?
Really? I think it’s a bit dull… 😉
Everyone, meet Liam, one of our sales account managers and a very talented wildlife photographer who has kindly populated the showroom with his work!
Well done video, thank you! I’m curious the 4K 120p recording quality…. Is it still line skipped or has the quality improved?
Would love to see the R5c vs the R3. Curious about the auto focus as well.
i love the false colors and scopes on my Ninja V on my R6 - leaning in to figure out the small scope of the R5C might be problematic on its LED screen.
would like to compare this to the Z9
Very helpful, indeed; thank you! To your suggestion at the end, I would be keen to see a comparison of the R5 C with the FX6. The two models have striking similarities and differences on paper -- what are they like in real-world settings? To that end, I'd be particularly interested to see autofocus comparison, as I've found the FX6 autofocus engine to be remarkable: can the R5 C hold up?
At 16:15 where can I find that battery?
What camera and lens did U guys use to shoot this video 📹. Footage looks amazing.
This is a game changer
Agreed. Its a hugely capable camera for the pricepoint and size.
Carl
i would like to know how it performs as a photographers camera.
It’s not as simple as version 1 and version 2
Canon have two systems designed for video and stills.
We will be making a video soon going in depth specifically on the advantages of using the R5c over the R5 for video!
Carl
3:33 the “photo” and “video” menus are backwards
Whoops! Good spot
Carl
I am definitely getting one. I bought the Canon 1Dx mark iii an year ago for my production unit. This can easily replace that or be another addition in here!
This a more capable video camera than the 1DX III in my opinion. Although the 1dx comes with a host of different advantages of course.
Carl
Few years ago i remember buying 1dxii for more money and not a lot of features (and sold it a year after) and now this r5c packed so much features in a well-thought pricing. this is the next step in camera revolution. The true hybrid that we’ve been waiting for. Canon did its homework this time, just wow
Without IBIS I wish it had internal ND's. I guess it's not possible with still having a mechanical shutter in there. Perhaps a future RF cinema zoom with IS could have ND's in the lens? That would fix the big drawbacks and make the R5C the true hybrid it claims to be.
It’s still something we haven’t seen done. Hopefully one day!
Carl
There's an adapter for EF lenses which can hold an "internal" ND filter.
There are extra pins in the RF electrical interface. There’s probably room to control a ND too.
Agreed! That would have been fantastic
Carl
Just got my R5c today, Oddly in Video the Battery runs out in roughly 1h (recording 4k xavc),
and you cant turn it on in Video anymore.
BUT in Photo Mode the Battery stills shows 31% left, which is really really odd to see.
That there is 1/3 juice left, but its seems not enough for video - cant quite wrap my head around it.
But hopes this helps
Does the SWIT batteries cause the camera to give the prompt "you are not using an approved battery" message?
Great video Carl! The price point is the biggest draw of this camera for me. It is very unlike Canon to be so price aggressive, but I am all here for it!
Agreed! I think this is the right price for the camera. Its a LOT of camera for the money
Carl
Although I would have love to see IBIS with some compromises like not being able to use it in highest frame rate modes or with some certain lenses. IBIS not actually being there is sad.
No IBIS isn't a processing power limitation. They purposefully didn't include it as some high end productions will not use a camera with a floating sensor. That is why no other cinema eos cameras have IBIS as well.
Carl
@@ProAVTV What other cinema camera offers a 45 megapixel sensor though?
@@CrisisActionTeam Gordon Laing's review of the R5c pretty much shows, that IBIS doesn't really matter.
Thanks for the review. Please do a comparison (R5c vs sony 1)
There is no such thing as the perfect camera! Even over in Sony land.
Carl
@@ProAVTV Truer words.
Sony can't output 8k on their HDMI, so you're stuck between a rock and a very hard place there, too.
@@Marlow925 Yep that is a negative for sure
Sony is producing harsh highlight rolloff on every A7 cameras to make the image looks amateurish.
amazing video as always carl i always come to you for more info i do have one question with the 8k60 what are some other battery source we can buy thats smaller and will fit on a tripod that will allow the 8k60
Carl
@@ProAVTV ok so with the power bank the use of Auto focus and the Tascam will come bank right
Hi, thank you for sharing this interesting video. I have a question please: can you tell me which zoom lens I can buy? Would I like a 24-105mm or more to make 4K documentaries? Thank you.
A 24-105mm is a classic all-round lens for documentary work. That would be a great starting point.
Carl
Mini HDMI is a bit odd. But not enough for me not to order the R5C. Thanks for this. All the codecs looked great.
Every camera has pro's and con's!

Please Compare R5c with A7s3, BMPCC 6K, S1H. TAHNK YOU!
A7S3 is definitely coming. Others haven’t been filmed, maybe further down the line.

You did a good job. Very helpful. Thank you
Can you have full LCD swivel when there’s a HDMI cable attached with the port protector it comes with?
Hi Carl.
Carl
Great content.
Would love to see a Dynamic range and low light test VS RED 8K Helium and VS Sony A7s iii.
Cheers
What does the standard battery provide with 8K and RF lenses? What is the cutoff for when external power is required? What are examples of external power sources?
This needs more testing. I didn’t realise it could do it while we had the RF lenses on hand, but I can get 8K 50p with an EF lens with iris control and AF on an internal battery. Which isn’t bad!
For external power options you could use the power base edge or titon base which i show in this video, or a USB PD power bank, or mains cable of course.
Carl
Can you do an overheat test in 8k 60fps?
Carl- you reversed the menu systems at 3:46. Video is on the right, photo is on the left. =)
Photography is curtailed by the lack of a stabilizer in the camera, is that all? Thanks for the review.
And some slight flash functionality because of the move to the MI shoe, that’s it.
Carl
@@ProAVTV Does the flashlight work on this new mount?
Going to upgrade to this instead of my EOS R + BMPCC4K combo
Thanks for ur content my question: for my understanding is that the r5 sensor is more like (4x3) is bigger in hight then the sensor of the c500 (16x9) is it possible to use the full sensor of the R5c?
would be amazing for anamorphic shooting and would it make so much more unique for anamorphic & multi format shooting

Amazing video! If you have the battery grip with two batteries installed does that allow you to record 8k 60p without any limitations?
Not officially, no. You need to be using a dummy battery or the USB-C PD port
Carl
@@ProAVTV Were you able to test it under those conditions? I would love to know if the lens autofocus and battery still work even if not officially supported. Thanks!
@@robertcrain9849 I don't have access to a battery grip unfortunately. However the camera is actually letting me record 8K 50p with just the internal LPE6 battery and I am getting autofocus with an EF lens and standard mount adapter

Can you record 8k 60p raw externally to a Ninja V+? If you can does that solve the battery power issue with 8k 60p?
OMG how can it call True Hybrid when it completely turn off and on when we switch to Photo to Video | Video to Photo? doesn't work for Run and gun type of shoots!
Well it only takes a few seconds, I wouldn't say it doesn't work!
It's just about priorities. If instant changing is important, then R5, R3, A1, S1H etc. are the cameras for you. If not, this will do a better job in the video mode.
Carl
Not sure it’s for me. After using cameras like the bmpcc6k pro, filming on mirrorless is hard. But I may buy a canon r5. My eos r is chugging as my photo business picks up
All I want to know is can the R5C send photos to a pc via WiFi?
Really interested about noise and DR performance against the C70. And RAW flexibility once C70 gets it's RAW update in March.
We will have more detailed comparisons coming soon. Whats in this video is only a small part of our tests. Very excited for the C70's raw update!
Carl
I could understand why Canon decided to strip away IBIS on the R5C as it was terrible on wider lenses with the R5. But in doing so and still raising the price seems a bit aggressive... love to know your thoughts on the pricing decision.
I think its a fantastic price. What else on the market gets you these features for this price?
Yes they took away the IBIS, but they also added a lot (MI shoe, Timecode, Fan, Tally, XFAVC, Video menus and the tools that come with it, etc.)

Still no implementation to record the files to external disk with the USB C port, which would make a lot of practical sense also given the massive Mb/s rate.
Have the R5C 4k 120FPS improve on the sharpness considering it was soft on the R5. Can you compare on both cameras?
Test is coming soon!

It’s not in the comparisons that we have shot I’m afraid, but the A7sIII is which has a very similar image indeed

@@ProAVTV fair enough! can't wait to see :) Thanks!!
how does it compare to Nikon Z9

@@ProAVTV Very much doubtful people will switch from brand x to brand y anymore, especially with how good the ML glass is on say Nikon, Canon, Sony and capture devices are, example Sony A1.

Do any on the enhanced stabilization modes work in 8k 24p and 8k 60p in RAW? Thanks!
No, when the camera is set to a raw mode the Digital IS options are greyed out
Carl
It’s not an ultimate hybrid camera. It doesn’t have built in ND filters.

Finally a hybrid FF mirroless that can do both stills and video. I really hate bringing 2 cameras on set, No SDI output huh? That's a shame canon! HDMI/SDI is the norm these days! I got my RX/TX receivers that really on a live feed for the director's monitor. 7/10 🤔
