I recently got the GR III HDF, and I legit laughed when I opened the box and picked it up, because I knew it was something I was going to carry around and enjoy using.
Big love for the GR III as an everday camera for (professional) photographers! It reignited my love for non-client work. I got the gorgeous diary edition. Highly recommended!
My play is similar but somewhat reversed; I use a Q2M and a GRIIIx - Q2M, offering me 28mm and GRIIIx at 40mm. I would argue that my setup has the potential for an even more film-like experience, although I'd never thought of it this way until this video. When I use my Q2M, I am looking for black & white shots - there, of course, is no alternative, just like in the film days. I use colour filters, have to think about where I am going and what I am shooting and need to think monochrome to get the best out when I hit the shutter button. That is my default, though, so it works for me. The GRIIIx naturally has all the positives of the GRIII (which I have owned, too) but with a focal length that I prefer in a more 'point and shoot' frame of mind. The GR is a wonderfully refined camera line. Given its size, there is no excuse not to carry it with you wherever you go, and I've captured so many memories with the III and IIIx that I'm sure I wouldn't have with a different setup. I had the original X100 when it came out, then the X100S - I don't like where that camera has gone in recent iterations. It seems to be the camera that attempts to be all things to all people. I am in the minority, as everyone loves the Fuji these days. Still, for me, a Q or a GR offer a better user experience in isolation and complement each other fantastically.
Yes the pocket size of the Ricoh is what makes it a true EDC camera, when I am not grabbing my M11-p I always bring the GRiii with me, plus the startup time from the ricoh its amazing I barely miss any shots, I wish the Leica could turn on as fast as the ricoh
As a GR user for the past few years: The Ricoh GR is terrible. Don't get one. Leave them to me. I am thinking about buying a GRIIIx, so those ones are especially bad. Stay away. Yucky. No film simulations, boo. Dust or something. Not full frame etc. The street edition explodes randomly like a Samsung phone maybe, idk. 👋
I keep the GRiiiX literally in my pocket no matter what I'm shooting. And usually, I have the X-T5 with a 56mm lens, so that is a bit more zoomed up. So I use the GRiiiX as a kind of other range/distance.
Now you speakin' my language! I shoot with the M kit predominantly. But a Ricoh GR is always with me. I prefer the GRII to the GRIII for a variety of reasons. If you haven't checked out the former version (same lens design), the sensor yields even closer to film with the JPG settings and how responsive it is to white balance settings. Biggest point that should be mentioned however, is the GR function of "snap to focus", like a Leica M using zone focusing, you just smash the shutter and it "snaps" to a preset distance and makes the exposure. No hunting, no AF issues, just a shooter's camera to get done what needs to get done.
I have a similar set up for travel. M10-P with a 35/50 Lux with a GRII. The main reason is the snap focus feature to go along with zone focusing on the M. The only issue now is that I'm interested in video... Now this makes it even more complicated. Swap out the GR for an A7C/II or ZV-E1?
In the plumbing supply section of Home Depot or Lowe’s, look for rubber Danco #47 O-ring. They are perfect for cinching up the Ricoh GR straps. It’s a cheap but extremely useful tip that makes carrying the GR such a great experience.
I considered the GR as a compliment to my m11p w/Voigt 35mm f2 and a Voigt 50mm f1.5 but the GR was out of stock so I went with the x100vI for travel with my Leica 28mm f2.8 and Voigt 50mm f1.5 which I’m looking ford to trying soon. I’m especially looking forward to leaving my a7rv home and finally traveling light.
After owning the GRiii hdf for a couple of months, I realised just how little I used the nd filter on the original. Auto or manual. In fact since the Ricoh had an nd i don’t believe I ever switched it on manually. So for me the HDF is the better buy. I only wish was the HDF icon could be visible on all display modes. And if you are listening Ricoh ? A QR code system for settings would be most appreciated 👍🏻
I've thought about getting a richo too to pair with my 50lux when traveling and leave the 28cron at home. holding off until they can get better weather sealing honestly. btw, Love my IDS foldable thumb grip. mine has brassed pretty quickly, almost a little too quickly lol. Do you have a M11-P/D/M RF patch cover on your M11? didnt know it would fit!
Also Ricoh has crazy DNG RAW files that have one of the most beatiful adobe profile colors. I even noticed that presets made for Leica works pretty well on the Ricoh DNG files while it destroys Fuji RAW files.
Simply untrue. You're using ACR, which is incl. into PS/LR. Go and do look over the plate, bro. X-Trans Sensor does need a tool, which get's the most out of it. DarkTable, RAW Therapee, Capture One, Iridient Developer, Iridient X-Transformer, PhotoNinja, PhotoLab...etc...to name just a few. Adobe never cared *really* about Fujifilm X-Trans, ever so since 2012 the X-Pro1 came to life. Therefore, their X-Trans engine inside ACR is still not (never) up with the best, and less good, then ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) for ordinary Bayer CFA Sensors.
@@marcp.1752 That's not the point i am trying to say. Files from Ricoh are in some ways close to Leica so presets work pretty well..Btw AI Denoise function in Lightroom drastically improves xtrans fuji files.
Man, shh. You want the insane Fujifilm not like other girls all up in our community, touching our stuff, and stinking up the place with their bad attitude? I like my cameras in stock. Do not summon the locusts pls. 😂
Its very similar to my current combo: Leica MP (film) 35mm voigtlander 50mm eureka and my ricoh grIIIx. its super fun to shoot film and digital! ive often though if i should have just gotten the ricoh III for a wider sense of view. we will see hahahah
Ricoh GRIII series is amazing! Killer camera and beautiful images. Perfect pocket and travel camera and perfect for when I want to shoot film and digital. Not perfect but it’s great.
Ricoh is an absolute gem. If I'm traveling, I'll have like a waist/shoulder bag w/ a film camer and carry my griii in my pocket and my iiix w/ the GT-2 tele adapter on my wrist. It never really leaves me wanting for more.
I ended up selling my GRIII after using the D-Lux 8 for a while. It's a little larger, but I really like having a viewfinder and the user experience of having a super simple menu system and a dial for all the necessary settings just made me fall in love. Not to mention the AF is much better than the Ricoh and so is video recording. Two more things that make it a great complement to an M.
@@photomorti I personally wouldn't want to compromise the size, zoom, battery, viewfinder, etc for a bigger sensor. For the kind of casual photography I use it for, having a deeper depth of field is actually quite an upgrade. And the relatively large aperture at the wide end makes it a competent low light performer despite the sensor size
YES. Please tell everyone. The D-Lux/LX100 is the perfect X100VI alternative. Evangelise that. Spread the word. Maybe throw in the ZV1 for good measure. Redirect the consumers. 🙏
Is it the old film days of two primes one being double that of the other maybe? I'm using X mount 27mm and 56mm on an X-M1 and X-E4/S20. I could just take one camera, but as you say it's quicker to just grab the 'other' camera.
You could get a D-Lux 8 and have 28 and 50mm in one camera that's also handy and comes with a built in viewfinder 😉 And it only costs a few hundred Dollars more than the (even older specs carrying) GR III 😌
I definitely had fun with my GRIII. I found myself trying to overly manipulate the exposure, and at that point jeopardized treating it as a point and shoot. As backwards as it sounds I wish you could only use Film Sims and treating it as an aperture priority camera. I really love using the GR1 film camera, but the LCD are too risky for their price nowadays.
I've been playing with the mono and colour film sims (custom versions where I've set the highlight and shadow contrasts) and large exposure compensations (+1.7EV or -0.7EV) and getting some beautiful shots. The trick was switching to spot metering, and this made operation very fast but getting "creative" results.
I don't think it's just Leica shooters... everyone i've met who used a Ricoh GR (honestly prefer the 1 and 2 for the flash though) loved it... it's so much smaller than anything else even cameras with a way smaller sensor... the colors are great the zone focusing system is really nice the AF is more than good enough for anything you could use it for... and that tiny lens on there is a beast... and all in a package for around $1000? What's not to love? (okay heard there's some problems with dust and debris getting into the lens but that might've been just improper use)
I just picked up a used Sony RX 100 V that fills this spot for me. I had originally been looking for a LUMIX LX10 or LX100, but couldn’t find one in good shape for a reasonable price. Ultimately glad the Sony came along because it hits the sweet spot in terms of features.
had GR III myself, dunno why I sold it and, tbh, the additional viewfinder is completely useless ( I had one ).... it was kinda developed with Moriyama in mind and it works flawlessly without.
I really tryed to love this little GR3 but it's not for me... If you shoot RAW, it's great! But I'm a JPG shooter, don't want to spend to much time on LR, and my Fuji is way simpler/better for files out of the camera (colors, DR, highlights and shadows...). The M11 looks awesome, but too expensive for my needs.
I'm not a fan of Ricoh GR series cameras. It reminds me of early 2000's Canon - Nikon point & shoot cameras. My favorite combination is M11-P with 28mm Ultron ASPH II and Fujifilm X-T30 II with 27mm f2.8. If I'm shooting a more dynamic environment and need autofocus, I switch to X-T30 II. Besides overall fuji quality, it's small enough to carry as a second camera.
The 28mm dof is too wide for me. Tried the GR iiix and couldn’t overcome the lack of EVF. The GRiiix is constantly underexposing and I have to fight the camera to expose properly. A big disappointment. I like complementing my 35mm with a 85mm lens. I will never afford a Leica unless I win the lottery. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Nah. LCD is better for wides. You can really work a scene better without getting on your knees. Plus, at arms length the LCD works like framelines and reality becomes the OVF. You can see around your frame better than bringing it to your eye. I thought it was bad at first, but I wouldn't go back. If I had the GRIIIX though, maybe I'd want the personal perspective more. 🤷♂️
Poor mans alternative , Ricoh GRIII XHDF& Sigma Fp L with 45mm f2.8 lens. L mount offers up a world of Leica and Sigma L mount lens, and even M mount with an adaptor.

But… why “point and shoot”? Just because it’s small? GRs are extremely sophisticated cameras. Sure, they’ve got a P mode. So does a Sony A1. Is that a P&S?
