She knows what’s going on. Boston, her teammate, received so much vitriol that she shut down her social media. It isn’t all of Clark’s fans. My partner is a HUGE Clark fan but the propensity to simply ignore the toxicity is maddening. The horrid stuff isn’t happening to her, so like this attitude you presented here, there’s a lack of concern. Right? Because it is widely known that most of the toxicity is exacted by fans of Clark, there’s a kinship there, a connection, so other Clark fans don’t actually want to condemn them. On some level I think the hatefulness they so openly display is appreciated because it’s done for Clark.
Instead they just want to dismiss them as trolls, leaving them free to continue supporting Clark-harassing, harming other players and their families, without any pushback. While media pundits ignore it but film segments speaking to how the league is bullying Caitlin; jealous of her; targeting her; should be grateful to her etc. They’ll speak those ideas, and that’s supported, but the vitriol, and threats to other players are minimized.
If they don’t stop blaming Caitlin’s fans? Caitlin’s fans are outraged too. Her REAL fans condemn such ugly behavior because they know it has no place. They are appalled by the lack of humanity shown. They are disgusted by it. The only people threatened are those that are guilty.

"I'm jealous that you have the biggest fanbase for any female athlete ever...so I want to separate you from it. I know, I'll drive a wedge between you and your fans, so that you abandon each other".
This reminds me of one scene in the movie "Malcom X". When Malcom shows up with tons of soldiers of Islam and with a flick of his wrist, they form and line up. One cop who is observing this, says "That is too much power for one man to have". And this is exactly how they feel about Caitlin. They feel--the league office and the players--that she has too much power.
They are trying so desperately to shove other players down fans' throats. It is not organic. Caitlin's fame IS organic. Instead of embracing and engratiating themselves to Caitlin's fans, they have chosen to try to alienate, diss and even physically hurt her. Dumbest strategy ever. Worse still, is that the WNBA commissioner and the referees, are all complicit.
The sabotage has not worked, even with the media's help. Hilarious how people who claim to be decades long sport watchers, seem to have never heard of Celtics, Patriots, Cowboys, Eagles, Raiders, Yankees, Red Sox, Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons fans. Hockey fans....My god, clearly, these people have NEVER seen or heard SOCCER fans...worldwide....The list is endless. Toxicity everywhere--but that does not define entire fanbases. Grow the heck up. It is NOT Caitlin's job--or the commissioner's--to police the internet--much less apologize for the trolls that inhabit Twitter and other spaces. You don't WANNA read toxic tweets? Don't actively SEEK OUT toxic tweets. Not that hard for grownups.
As for Engelbert, I called for her firing from DAY ONE....but for different reasons. She is an absentee commish and has done NOTHING to grow the game. She has allowed it to be a prison ball league. She has allowed players this season try to end the career of their biggest star--Caitlin Clark. This is unforgivable. Bring in Nancy Lieberman ASAP. She would clean up this circus, shyt show excuse for a "pro league". As for the WNBA players--worry about being well-spoken professionals who respect the sport, instead of pouty, jealous children...before tackling the darkside of the internet. Baby steps.

Cathy Englebert is snubbing Caitlin Clark. Englebert should stop.
Caitlin Clark is single-handedly saving the WNBA.
A year ago I hadn't uttered "WNBA" in more than ten years years.
Today, I am a WNBA fan because of Caitlin Clark.
My reaction to Caitlin Clark in 2024 is exactly the same as was my reaction to Michael Jordan in 1984 and 1985.
I am confident that Caitlin Clark will change the WNBA in the same way that Michael Jordan changed the NBA during his NBA career.
I'm here now, watching WNBA games, spending money on WNBA merchandise, because Caitlin Clark brought me here.
If Caitlin Clark were not here, I would not be watching WNBA games.
If Caitlin Clark were not here, I would not be buying WNBA merchandise.
I can't be the only new fan who is here, watching and spending money, because of Caitlin Clark.
Caitlin Clark is a better basketball player than Angel Reese in almost every measurable way.
Talk about Angel Reese if you want to.
Caitlin Clark is several levels above Reese.
People talk about Angel Reese largely because Angel Reese, driven by insecurity and jealousy, talks about Caitlin Clark.
Angel Reese's toxic narcissism will destroy Angel Reese. And Reese's narcissism is almost all she has.
Hopefully, Angel Reese will solve Angel Reese's problem all by herself, and soon.
    Reiterating:
Cathy Englebert is snubbing Caitlin Clark.
Cathy Englebert needs to get the Hell out of the way

Quita, I agree with everything you are saying. In addition, I think the players have completely missed the original point Commissioner Engelbart was making: there is now an increased level of social media attention on the league and on the individual players within the league. By the very nature of social media, this will bring out more trolls, and the best thing to do about trolls is to ignore them. There is nothing else that the WNBA or anyone can do about it. Feeding them never makes anything better.
The players need to gain some self awareness about what they are posting about other players if they don't want to draw negative attention to their social media accounts. More people are watching now, and when they put negativity out into the world, it's inevitably going to come back to them. There is a reason Caitlin is so so careful about her public comments.

It is the price of fame and also of choosing to make comments online. Maybe Elon Musk could fix the Twitter part, but he doesn't want to. The rest of us can only ignore, block, or delete social media. Demanding that people make statements does nothing to address the problem.

If it was as simple as just ignore the personal security business would not exist. Some of these people act on their thoughts. The fact that they started chartering flights because of the attention CC was getting in airports show that they understand what can happen and they take actions to prevent that.
(Heck someone thought of shooting Trump and tried it 😭)
Even if the aim is to ignore, there should be an effort to show swift repercussions when someone crosses the line.
People are being a bit Myopic.
Someone gets hurt then they will have to come out and address it - plus you just need one victim for this to become a serious issue.
Worse is if the attacker belongs to a certain fan base and the player has never made any statements to denounce that behavior in their name.

Cathy is right to not feed the trolls. Yes the conversation has taken a darker turn especially in the beginning of the season. But right now the basketball conversation is much louder and clearer and the trolls have receded into the background. She kept it on basketball and the culture of W-players around the game.
There are ways to challange the trolls, or condemn them, but you have to be carefull not to make it about them, because they win on engagement, not on winning the argument.

No they have not receded anywhere. They are loud and deep. I think they because Clark hasn’t said that she’s been followed home; that her life has been threatened; that there aren’t memes depicting her as a murder victim with another player posed as the perpetrator-that too few care that it’s happening. If it were her, on the receiving end of the harshest of the vitriol-there would be an outcry all over these media stations. There wouldn’t be anyone in comment sections suggesting that she just ignore it. That she was soft. There would be a demand for those in leadership positions to take a firm stance against such behaviors. That they make it clear that it’s unacceptable.

    • @otnielbelfor528

      @leiannb.wrytes8893 appreciate the comment.
Though it is true that some of the most vicious vitriol has been directed at some of the players, i think it is always a tricky situation how best to handle this. Oftentimes, condemning and saying al the "right" things have more of a feel of virtue signaling rather than actually doing anything to stop the harrasment.
These trolls say the darndest things just to get a reaction. They feed on the anger and shock of those they harras, thats entirely the point. I think the conversation on the bigger platforms has moved towards focussing on basketball and less on the trollish behavior and talking points, and Cathy had that instinct to focus on the good this increased attention has brought.
Though she might have addressed it, I'm hard pressed to believe it actually does something other than virtue signaling.
Last point, not to compare levels of harrasment and hate but Clark has been subject to harrasment, she on the other hand, had made it her entire personality to ignore everything and everyone online and focus on her play in the court, to the point that nobody barely notices or knows she is being harrased. Not saying its right, but ignoring online harrasment has an effect in silencing those voices.

I highly recommend everybody going back and watching videos all over. Players, coaches, ESPN, retired players, fake news podcasts . All of them being very disrespectful to Clark. Gino said she had not skills, not built for the league. Called her fans stupid and delusional because they were saying Clark would be successful in the league. Wilson said Her success, was related to her race, also that she could not be considered among the GOATS of college basketball because she did not won a championship at that level, same said B Stewart, Sheryl Swoops said a ton of lies to discredit Clark as well, D Taurassi lied as well, she said CC looked super human because her more than 100 individual awards in college, three times hers by the way, and her 45 plus individual records were set against 18 yrs old competition. LIES, Clark was cooking at 18 in college against mostly 22,23,24, and some 25 yrs old. very rarely you get to be starter at 18 in college. Clark is one of very few. She implied that it would take years for Clarks game to transcend to the hardest league in the world. Which MEMO by the way was not read by Clark, who has been playing at the level of the best veteran players to ever come into the league. Angel R as the opportunist that she is, try to collect on Clarks popularity by coming up to her in 2023. And the media, followed, and for the first half of this season, players, the league, the media, continued with the disrespect towards Clark by saying Angel was performing as the ROTY, when CC was breaking records left and right since day one. Yes day one, people forget she is the fastest player to ever score 50 points plus X amount of Assists, that was around a three game span. Near to a DD with point and Assist every game and near to several triple doubles. more than 15 and 20 points plus 8 Reb, 7-8 Assists several times. Better Stats that most guards called to the olympic team. But was called not talented enough by ESPN, and that her inclusion on the team would be a disgrace to the game and the league. Funny that three weeks later she cooked that Olympic team at will. On everybody's face Since she is so professional, humble, let my play do the talking kind of player. Her fans came to the rescue. And it was so much, so disrespectful, that some people took it personal, and maybe some said bad things, or used bad words on a commentary but it was all in response to so many insults to a person that had done nothing but play better than everybody else in college, championship or not, and its playing like the best at professional level too. These athletes say they care about women, and that they support each other, but it seems to be with a variation of the standards.

The better question would be why are you allowing thuggery when trying to grow the league? We need more consistent officiating. The bar should be how the NBA refs call their games. Up to two games ago 17% of flagrant fouls had been called against Caitlin. Could this be why two obvious flagrant fouls were not called against Minnesota? Like it or not the league has to enter a new age where they protect their stars! Or maybe they don’t care about losing 2/3 of their dollar value.

Thanks so much Britany you really speak for all players of the WNBA!
Oh one of those flagrant fouls was Reece against CC and the way Reece dresses you would think she going to a strip show instead of dressing up for the public view. Common you dress like that you get sexualized period!! Not too hard to figure out!! Common sense!! So it’s not the new fans it’s the old guard we’re sick of the flagrant fouls, poor coaching unprofessionalism, bullying players from coaches -Hammond!! So don’t speak of such when you don’t know what you’re talking about!! Look at your ex player Sheryl Swoopes the racist hater!!! Should I go on… The WNBA needs to grow up and we all need to be better people and expand the WNBA so the players can get paid. Cathy E getting around to address the question one day later is adequate. However, I’m still wondering what you think, Quita, about some of the hate and disrespect from some from the WNBA, such as Angel’s hateful cheering on of Carter’s flagrant body check, which hateful attitude was evident in 2023 when Reese taunted and stalked CC when LSU had the ball with less than 10 seconds to go. That was classless. Instead of celebrating the national championship win with her teammates, Reese chose to focus on CC for those last 10 seconds. Perhaps racism wasn’t part of Angel’s pettiness, but why was she so obsessed with CC? By then Hailey VanLith and CC had already given their accounts of the you-can’t-see-me gesture when VanLith was at Louisville, so Reese’s explanation didn’t hold up. But what about Sheryl Swoopes’ hatefulness and disrespect of CC? There are indications that race might be a part of SS’s irrational attitude. Thankfully, she was removed from broadcasting the Fever game and Nancy Lieberman was a welcome substitution.

Let's start with the most significant fact that no one wants to address... the players don't own the WNBA! Owners are starting to reap the financial benefits of the CC effect at an alarming pace. Change is not only difficult, but it's coming faster than anyone imagined. And as s a result the old guard is being pushed into the "WNBA Abyss." When it comes to how race impacts professional sports, consider this prominent Business review... 97% of all sports franchises are White owned; 98% of the corporate sponsors are White owned; and 87% of season ticket holders in every sport are White. Owners will always follow the money and they're not going to piss off a predominantly White fan base. Yes, Blacks make up a significant portion of professional rosters.... but the players know who call the shots financially. The WNBA owners are having to grow-up or get bought out. That's the reality. Over the next two seasons the W won't be the same... hanging around on a roster for 10 to 15 years will be a thing of the past. More thought will go into the draft process. Fans will be watching big time. Angel Reese is a better than average rookie at best. She's slow, and gets caught flat footed to often. Not to mention inaccurate with her shots. If the Sky improve without her, her time in Chicago will be scrutinized and short lived. Quite I enjoy your program.

I fully agree with Terri and her comment. Kathy's updated comment was enough for now, but something should have been said sooner. I think that perhaps she was waiting it out to let things settle, which it has quite a bit. My biggest issue was with the social media influencers. Majority of which were men, some former NBA players that never gave a damn about the WNBA before, were stirring hatred, judgement, racisim, and totally opening dialog to tear down players, coaches, and the WNBA as a whole. Stating many players were horrible, coaches that needed to be fired, and the WNBA needed to be taken down for the violence it perpetuated. All of this should have been addressed by the WNBA commissioner. I know she didn't want to hurt this new fan base frenzy so she was sort of rock in a hard place.

The absolute least she could do after being called out literally all day long by players, media and fans. • @kidrissa
    @kidrissa 5 дней назад

I understand Stewie and the WNBPA being disappointed with Cathy's response. In a situation like that, when a BRIGHT spotlight is put on a problem facing The W, you'd want your leader to have a clear, direct, "No. We are NOT having that" message. The "Hey, competition is great" response not only feels like a letdown to the players, but also seems to invite more of this negative behavior in the name of "competition" and "rivalry". And while that sounds good for short-term business goals, it's a TURRBULL (to use Barkley's word) foundation to build on going forward. It'll only sell tickets for a little while and normalize that behavior in newer fans. They're think that's how you're SUPPOSED to interact with the WNBA.
But I don't think it's anywhere near a "She should be fired" situation. It was a mistake and a missed opportunity, but that's it. Wanting her fired is as much an overreaction as the "fans" who think CC should be ROTY + MVP + Olympic Starter + The Next US President + The Queen Of Errythang.

I think the old guard wants CC out of the league. They know that trolls come with fame. They didn't get many trolls before because no one, except for a small fan base, cared. Stewie saying she wants an inclusive fan base is code for: we don't want white conservatives in the fan base. In fact, they would like CC out of the league.
CC has broken multiple league records as a rookie. She has turned the Fever from a joke into a contender. She has shown up the older players as perhaps being not quite as good as advertised. She keeps her mouth shut and only shows class, something some of the players could learn from. They can't stand her. They've already tried giving the Fever an impossible schedule in her first 11 games, bullying her, roughing her up and bad-mouthing her. Nothing has worked, so the next step is to DEI her out of the league.
There is nothing CC can do about it. Don't feed the trolls is the first rule of the internet. Nothing CC says will do anything but make it worse.
Prediction: the trolls will spiral out of control, CC will be blamed and forced from the league. Then the WNBA will go back to the obscurity it so richly deserves.
