I see many remove the engine, and some replace by going under. What is more convenient? Why you choose your method? I ask because I’m going to be replacing mine soon. Great video!
I can appreciate the video. Great work. But for an everyday diy person who doesn't have a cherry picker to pull the engine, removing the transmission is probably easier.
@@Ben15Nadeau sorry no soundcloud, I got it via Amazon a while back but since then I think they lost their license to sell that specific track. Here's a RUclips link though. ruclips.net/video/oFLItoOlY54/видео.html
I would if I wasn't such a cheapskate. Labor costs are at least twice the material costs. Even with purchasing new tools, you'll still save more money.
Thank you for posting this. Very helpful. What else did you do with the fuel pressure release? Did you start the engine? Any other steps not shown, I would appreciate if you can point out. Is it necessary to remove radiator? Thank you.
I appreciate your comment, super glad you found it useful. For the fuel pressure release the factory service manual calls for removing the fuel pump fuse, opening the gas cap, and then running the car until it stops. I thought it would take less than a minute but it took close to 5 minutes. I removed the radiator for clearance, if you disconnect the radiator hoses it's just a coupe minutes more to remove the heat exchanger. This was much simpler done than said.
Good luck to you, you won't need it though. Subaru made these cars like legos, you won't need anything special. A basic metric toolset with screwdrivers, wrenches, sockets, ratchets, torque wrenches, and an engine hoist are all that's needed.
you are truly skilled !
thank you for such a positive comment! be well!
Thank you for this video. Very helpful. 👍 👍 👍
Holy crap. I really liked the editing of this video. Makes it seem like a breeze haha
It really really is this easy. The hardest part was trying to un-mate the engine from tranny.
Max, great video! Quick question do I have to remove the clutch fork shaft before separating the tranny and engine? Thanks for posting!
Glad you found it useful Kenny, I didn't have to remove the shaft prior to separating. Hope it helps!
How long did all this take cause I’m going to do mine this weekend and gotta have my car up running by Sunday 🤣
weekend is all it really takes. first time so i took more time organizing. do plenty of research! it pays off.
I want to do this but how do i know what to torque every bolt i remove off the car 😔
The factory service manual has all the torque specs. If you search online you can also find torque specs from the FSM too!
@@maxpham thank you ill look into it👍🏽
Bro, is the music Blackmill covered on piano???
You didnt replace the flywheel? Im deciding between replacing it or not but wasnt sure if leaving the old one would be a good idea
If I had more lead time I would have replaced the flywheel.
how did you guys access the 2 lowest engine to trans bolts? the axles seem to be in the way
I don't recall off hand but everything was accessible. Don't over think it?
was this really necessary ???

is it really easier to pull the engine rather than the transmission? i need to install the PDM TSK3 kit on my car.
This video was super helpful. Also what's the song playing? Some remix originally from blackmill lol
Thank you! You got Blackmill right, I slowed Lucid Truth to match the pace of the work.
@@maxpham you gotta soundcloud or anywhere I can find it at ?

This is something I would pay someone to do

is it really that simple to pull the engine out of these WRX’s???
Yes. yes it really is.

@@maxpham Ok. I don't think it's necessary to remove the hood, is it? Did you replace transmission fluid? Thank you.
This clutch is for the 2015-2018 FA20 WRX? Amazon says "it wont fit your vehicle"
That's good to know Marty. I've been daily driving this for almost 20k miles since I installed it.
@@maxpham so it does fit then. Sweet! Thanks for the quick reply
@@Siiiiiikk let me know if you have any questions on your install!
I'm gonna have to replace my clutch soon. Could you give me a list of all the tools that is needed to do this?

Is it worth upgrading to exceddy if you are running oem?
It's a bit overkill but if you prefer a heavier clutch like me, I see nothing wrong. :)
Do you have an idea how long it took to do the job
Roughly 8 hours. It was hot out and I was filming a bit since I never did this before. I'm guessing a competent mechanic could do it in half the time.
did your stock clutch go out?
Yep, it showed slippage at highway speed on incline.
Directions to confusing, got peepee stuck in ceiling fan.
Why did you remove the serpentine belt ?
I was wondering the same thing
Removing the belt would prevent it from damage while the engine was being removed.
How many days did it take to finish
6hrs but this was my first Subaru engine removal.
Your coolant is clear?
Not quite, stock was purplish
Hey what engine hoist do you have in this video?
I'd have to check for specific model but I got it from Napa a long while ago. It's nothing special.
@@maxpham also is this video (provided common sense) everything needed to be done or did you do a few things off cam
@@maxpham nvm the hoist I found it on Napa and it looks discontinued. Is 1.5t or 2Ton needed?
@@SJS_Devin 1.5T is all you need really... I don't know any engine over 500lbs (.25T)
@@maxpham so 1 ton will work too I'm guessing? I can pick one up from harbor freight in the morning
Wait you have to do all of this just to replace the clutch?
Mr Wilson AWD that’s why. Either remove the engine from the trans or remove the trans from the engine.
No, removing the trans is way easier, a buddy and I did it in less than 8 hours.
@@BradleyHarris69 he said he did it in 6 lol
So much to disconnect lol
