Not gonna lie this was my first time ever doing a clutch let alone taking out a transmission I wouldn’t have been able to do it without this video. A couple extra tips for newbies: 1- clutch alignment tool must be used to center the clutch don’t just put it in and think you’re okay or you will not be able to put the input shaft through the pilot bearing/flywheel, you must hold it almost the exact center of the opening and tighten down the pressure plate while holding it centered still 2- Organize your shit or you’re gonna have to drive to subaru to buy multiple bolts covered in grease 3-for axel reinstall once axel is aligned and will not go in any farther but there is still a gap: use center section as a “hammer” and hit the end into the transmission 3/4 times, if it does not go in, immediately spin the axle 180 degrees (to align the snap ring at the end of the axle) and repeat

Absolutely amazing detailed video! I've worked on cars since I was a teenager but never replaced a clutch on a Subaru and my buddy just asked if I could help him.

Thank you for this. Very informative and you do great work 👍🏼 looks like you know what you’re doing and I can tell you take pride in your work. We need more mechanics like you in this industry. Anyway I’m getting ready to do a clutch job on a ‘19 WRX for a buddy of mine. I’ve done hundreds of clutches in my life just not on a Subaru and watching your video first let me know what I’m in for. I’ve been wrenching on heavy duty class 8 trucks for a living for 31 years now and it looks like this job will be a piece of cake compared to a 15 inch clutch that weighs 150lbs, a flywheel that weighs 100lbs and removing a transmission that weighs 600lbs. 😂 You make clear and detailed videos that help the average person repair their cars. Keep doing what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.
@JaySki Thanks for your feedback it's viewers like you that keeps me motivated, and that is why I read and respond to all my comments 👍. Thanks for watching please Like, Share and Subscribe if you haven't already
You are a savior. This must be the most well put together instuctional video I've ever used for a bigger job like this. Great vids man.

Nice video, much like everyone else it was great to see it come together before performing it on my own!
Great video sir! Doing this right now. Best how to I've seen ! Lots of little tricks. Love the tie strap idea to rotate the motor

Just followed this step by step while doing my clutch. I know this is old, but people are still using it. Worked out great. Thank you!
Out of curiosity, how long did it take you?
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching please Like, Share and Subscribe if you haven't already
I believe the 8 mounting bolts on the flywheel are 22.1 ft-lb for the WRX and 55.3 ft-lbs for the STI.

Please take your transmission apart video it and reassemble it for me please lol. this is the best video for 17 up clutch though. Not many videos out at all.
@Micheal Wittman lol appreciate the comment. Thanks for watching
Why not just remove the lower ball joint for the axle removal so not to mess with the alignment? great vid. Why not put the wratching strap on before you unbolt the trans?
@RobHTech I would do that if was replacing the ball joint due to damage that may occur upon removal. Thanks for watching please Like, Share and Subscribe if you haven't already
Some people pull the motor out instead of the transmission to replace the clutch on these cars. Which method do you think is the easiest?
@SG Alanzo I prefer to remove the transmission instead of the engine, where I would have to worry about removing wiring harnesses, engine mounts and using engine lifts plus whatever else that might be in the way. Thanks for watching please Subscribe if you haven't already
Excellent vid.👍 thank you
@Jameslll Thanks for watching please Like, Share and Subscribe if you haven't already
Hey man do you by chance know where the firewall ground strap connect to? I think it might have broke it lol! Does it connect to the transmission? Awesome vid by the way helped a lot! 💯
Yes it does. One onto he transmission and one on the engine. Thanks watching please Like, Share and Subscribe if you haven't already

Would this be the exact method to use for installing a 2017? Lastly how do I know if I need to replace my clutch or my clutch and flywheel? Thank you! very informative video
@Ryan Sanders it should be the same or very similar. if your clutch is slipping , shifting is difficult, burning smell, gears only shift at high RPM are all signs of a bad clutch and if you are replacing you might as well replace the flywheel because it will be easily accessible at that point. Extensions do not throw off the torque when using a wrench. Only impacts
@Nate Gordon Thanks for watching please Like and Subscribe if you haven't already
@BIGWILLSCARCARE great detailed video, thank you! I just had my 2016 WRX clutch, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and clutch fork replaced at 59k miles due to throwout squealing and clutch fork chattering. It's a new upgraded clutch (South Bend), new stock TOB, and new upgraded fork that should be same dimensions as stock. Engagement and shifting is smooth and tight, but when I picked up the car, I immediately noticed a noise when depressing the clutch almost like the former TOB noise but more of a metal sound like rotational friction. It gets fainter as the clutch heats up but does not go away after several break-in trips of light use. Could my mechanic have not used enough grease on the shaft that the TOB rides on, maybe misaligned the clutch fork, or should I have replaced the pivot ball to mate up better with the new fork's pivot socket to provide better fork alignment and prevent play? Is there anything you would suggest besides tearing back down to find the source of this grinding noise (expensive)? The mechanic said to keep driving it to see if it goes away but that does not seem like a good idea (I don't want to damage the shaft or the pressure plate). I have liked & subscribed due to your detail and knowledge and look forward to watching your other vids, especially for CV axle replacement since that's next. Thank you!!
@mike phillips sorry for the late response but maybe your mechanic didn't use any grease at all or the wrong grease and I have seen where mechanics removed the old parts and didn't clean the surface before installing new parts. Thank you for supporting my channel 👍
The most informative video for WRX clutch install yet. I do have one question if I could trouble you to help me, please! I have replaced the clutch and am installing onto engine but having difficulty getting the tranny to completely mate to the engine without some resistance. I was wondering if accidentally moving the lever while handling the transmission while removing that is actuated by the shift cable that has been detached, would impact the re-assembly. I don't honestly know what gear it may be in as I've hit that damn lever and actuated the shift lever to the right rear of the tranny which sounds like I have changed the gears. I just don't know how much pressure to place on the transmission in order to get it to mate past the tabs on each side of the tranny. Should it press up to the engine block without resistance? I'm having to work the bolts on equally criss cross to get the tranny to move toward the block then get resistance once the tabs begin to mate up. Thank you for your input.
@Justin King I don't believe that should prevent it from mating. Make sure the engine is rotated towards the rear and the clutch is seated correctly. Use the clutch alignment tool. Thanks for watching please Like and Subscribe if you haven't already. Also follow me on Instagram Big Will Car Care
Having the same issue. What did you do about it? I also think I actuated something and got bolts in, and the go in without resistance until about 1 centimeter left. Help!
@@zyco611 Did you get it figured out? im in the same spot i still have 2 inches to go… everything is aligning as far as i can see but still no progress
Wicked! Video tuff my yute. Bless up! Subscribed. 🤜🏾🤛🏾
@Rho Main thanks for watching. bless
Great video. One question how did you remove the top shifter cable?
@titofoller 16:00 to 18:11 minutes section is where I have the information. The angle wasn't good for me to record it but it's the same as the lower. Thanks for watching please Like, Share and Subscribe if you haven't already
You ever figure it out?
I got the bracket and clip off but not sure how to disconnect that top cable from the tranny
@@Hunter-og1sy it's around the 17:28 mark of the video. Thanks for watching please Like, Share and Subscribe if you haven't already
Hello! I assume it would be quite similar with the 2019 impreza base model? Except without the intercooler part? Nobody made a video on the impreza base models.☹️
@Skrmng Hrd it should be similar . Thanks for watching please Like and Subscribe if you haven't already
Good video. What is those linkage on the transmission.? My is 2007 OB at 107K need to it.
@KwadKen can you give me the time stamp on the scene with the linkage? That way I can give you a direct answer. Thanks for watching please Like and Subscribe if you haven't already
Was this the 5 speed or 6 speed transmission I notice while taking my STI 6 speed it's very similar
Hey Big Will, I just completed replacing the clutch on my 2018 WRX, thanks to your video for about 90% of the info I needed to complete the job. How do I send you some cash? I'd rather not subscribe to Patreon, just want to send you a few dollars for saving me a lot of money. TIA
Glad it helped you can email me for my info. Bigwillcarcare@gmail.com
You left some things in place like the exhaust that makes the job a little easier than others have shown.Would this be the same procedure for a 2008?
@Jeff Flowers I'm not sure but it should be a similar process. Thanks for watching please Like and Subscribe if you haven't already
@@BIGWILLSCARCARE Now that I'm digging into this project, I can see the 08 is different. The turbo on the right side is blocking at least one bell bolts so I will likely have to remove it. :( I might be able to get away with just removing the heat shield. But now wonder if I'll have to remove the exhaust on mine anyway :( I also snapped the top starter bolt. Hopefully there is enough sticking out of the block to grab it.
What's the the link to the clutch you used 2018 was a split year
Does the top shifter cable just pop off and has no pin holding it?
I can't recall the exact set up but I believe I covered it in the video. Thanks for watching please Like, Share and Subscribe if you haven't already
you actually completely skipped how it was attached @@BIGWILLSCARCARE
Im having problems with the pull clutch i ordered. Are these clutches the pull or push type stock?
It is push I believe, if the fork is facing the rear of the car it is push. Thanks for watching please Like, Share and Subscribe if you haven't already

Was there a reason you didn't address the rear main seal while you were there?
Otherwise, thank you for this. I am very soon doing the work on a 2013 WRX, and I want to be as prepared as possible.
@n00barul the car was fairly new so and seal was in good shape. Thanks for watching please Like and Subscribe if you haven't already and also support my IG BIG WILL CAR CARE

@Nestor Lanuzaa no pin removed just the nut for the axle a d its secured by bending the collar on the nut into a groove on the axle. Thanks for watching please Like and Subscribe if you haven't already
