  • We all loved the character of Pai Mei in "Kill Bill" for his trash-talk and stunning kung-fu skills. But did you know that Pai Mei has a deep history in film (Shaw Bros. movies), music (Wu-Tang Clan), and ancient Chinese history (Bak Mei - the Judas of Shaolin mythology)?
This video delves deep into the story behind this iconic character from Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill". From the wisecracks to the Five-Point-Palm-Exploding-Heart Technique, it's no wonder Pai Mei is such a beloved icon. The Reel Story of Kill Bill's Pai Mei.

Ironic, Bruce Lee spent his entire life ridiculing traditional martial arts as a waste of time, and a qoute, classical mess' of ineffectual moves. Then teaching better. He actually foresaw the popularity of MMA and kickboxing.
And after his death, movies like this and Kararte Kid ect that say the opposite. I pity the student that wastes his time and money on styles like this shown, only to be crippled or killed in an actual mugging or brawl.

@@AITreeBranches in typical "of today" fashion to point out such things as though every piece of pop culture we consume isn't 98% recycled from somewhere. This makes Tarantino no different from anyone at all. For instance, I just caught an obscure independent film called "laugh killer laugh", with William Forsythe as the main character. Very dark and not surprisingly obscure. Watching it though showed me that not only was "Joker" already recycled as a character, but this incredibly lauded and popular films other portion is stolen right from this earlier film that nobody has seen so its safe to copy. Its just the nature of all art, our civilization is too successful. When you keep written records into the thousands of years and are able to access them, how can anything not be derivative of something else? Maybe thats why our successful western societies are dying of existential boredom. edit...i didn't mean to do a dive that deep, my fingers took off without me, apologies if its too serious for the tone, cuz it is.

Chinese History is interesting as it is often fact mixed with liberal doses of fiction. The version of Bak Mei's story that I know is:
    1) Not a Eunuch, but had the skill to withdraw the testicles & possibly the rest up into the body.
    2) Supposedly not Shaolin, but a Taoist monk from Wudang mountain who was visiting to test his Gung fu.
    3) Was kicked out of Shaolin temple because his style was very vicious- Bak Mei is known to typically rip off ears, grab the nose, fast finger strikes to sensitive areas like nerve bundles, grabbing & twisting flesh, etc.... This style is real and survives to this day in at least 2 direct lineages, it is known for extreme speed and agile, evasive defense as well. It is considered an 'internal' style. Fighting one of these guys if you don't have a lot of skill and experience will likely result in a trip to the hospital and possibly permanent injury.
    4) The Qing dynasty supposedly gave Bak Mei a choice: either 1) Help us sack Shaolin & kill everyone or 2) we kill all of your students.
I took a few lessons and found the style exotic and difficult, as if I was dating an attractive woman who did not speak any of my languages.... Your mileage may vary, I'm not sure if there is any definitive historical scholarship on this man. Also the picture shown here is not Bak Mei.

Techniques like that are said to exist in Kung Fu, as the "10 day death punch", "30 day death punch" etc. They were called like that because those attacks were directed to damage certain organs, like ripping the spleen. Those injuries were within the body and not treatable by the medicine in these days. The dying took different time, depending on which organ was damaged, or ruptured. So it is not a mere trope, but was taking back on facts from times with no modern medical equpiment to diagnose and treat interior bleedings/damaged organs.

They can only make Pai Mei as a villain. The Chinese cinema has been influenced by too many Wong Fei Hung and Yip Man movies. Therefore it is a taboo to show the priest Bak Mei/Pai Mei as a hero or good guy in a new movie. Too many Chinese people see Hung Ga(Wong Fei Hung) and Wing Chun(Yip Man) as "good guy" arts and Bak Mei(the martial art) as a villain's art. (Also because of the legend that priest Pai Mei was a traitor to Shaolin)

That was very informative. I had seen bits and pieces of the old kung fu flicks with his character, but I never heard his back story before. I knew that he was arrogant and cruel, but I didn't know that he was a traitor to Shaolin. I didn't know he was supposed to be a eunuch either. As eunuchs go, that old dude had some balls!

@@mournblade1066 you’ve made an interesting point. As a paradox. Pai Mei is canonically evil as well. Makes sense that he’d teach Bill. I’m not sure what he saw in Beatrix that made him decide to teach her his ultimate technique, but there’s the continuity. And I think Tarantino got inspiration from many many other king fu films. Maybe that’s what made him ask the actor that always played Pai Mei’s antagonist in the old films to play the legendary Pai Mei!

Some of their creativity is still impressive today. Safir and Murphy's imaginative creation of Mr. Gordon's is the most memorable reading of the books of that time. And yes I know this is supposed to be about Tarantino's Pai Mei; but when I saw your comment on Chiun, I couldn't help myself.

Pai Mei is not immortal it is just several different people throughout the centuries. The original Pai Mei has been dead for a long time. The male takes on the physical features of his master out of respect. Soon Beatrix is going to be the new Pai Mei.

Shaun is right. 白煤 was a Taoist legend. Wether he actually existed or not is unclear. The legend comes from a time in China when novellas known as wuxia romanticized such mythical warriors. This particular story was a martial arts epic centered around the Hung XiGuan avenging the death of his xiaolin master at the hands of his rival from Wudan mountain. Hung being the creator and first master of Hung Ga southern boxing.
No one can say empirically what is absolutely true and what's not as it's widely believed to be nothing more than a martial arts myth.

Taoism is different from Buddhism, and Taoism already existed in China before Buddhism was even introduced. The area of the Shaolin Monastery was actually originally a Taoist site, before it became Buddhist. It's a known fact that Shaolin Kungfu (Buddhism) took many aspects of Taichi (Taoism). In fact back in the day, to spread Buddhism in China, they had to use Taoist concepts and vocabulary so that people could understand it (this led to the fusion of philosophy to what is now called Chan/Zen Buddhism).
Thanks to the New Age Movement, these ancient philosophies have been confused with one another, and rendered into nothing but trendy ignorance.
