Lay Lady Lay has one of the most haunting productions of all time. Such character.
Great to see an actual interview with Kenny Buttrey, who was such a wonderful drummer on so many great recordings. I do not recall ever seeing another interview with him before. It's also hard to find him on video, as he is usually in the background. I fell in love with Kenny's playing when I bought "John Wesley Harding" by Bob Dylan when it first came out. His drumming is nothing less than fantastic! I was a teenager learning to play bass, and that record taught me so much about being in a rhythm section. To this very day, for me that album is Dylan's masterpiece. It's so simple and yet so perfect. Kenny's drumming and Charlie McCoy's bass playing are the perfect rhythm section on all of those classic tunes. I still listen to it with as much appreciation as I ever did. In addition there is "Blonde on Blonde" and "Nashville Skyline" and all the Area Code 615 records, and his work with Neil Young and many other great names. Kenny Buttrey was truly one of the greatest drummers ever.
Hi Joe... thanks for sharing your thoughts... you know what you’re talking about:) I have Kennys drums and Charlie’s bass in the museum. Ben Keith’s steel too. Best.......Joe
My favorite Dylan masterpiece has everything, even a janitor helping.
Have never seen a Buttrey interview. Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it Bo... the clips of Kenny were filmed by his widow years ago. She was kind enough to share them with me for the museum. The others were ones I made over the last 16 years. Thanks for watching... Best, Joe
Joe....I LOVE your place in Nashville! The Best! And I live by the Rock Hall in Cleveland.
Hi Brp......Thank you for visiting the museum as well as watching our channel! I’m very happy you enjoyed it when you were here. Best....... Joe
I have always loved that song. Maybe my favorite of Dylan's. It has such a great sound and this video just revealed three of the sounds/reasons that make it so for me...cowbell, bongo and steel guitar. Awesome.
*At the time it came out I remember Bob Dylan saying that the recording of 'Lay Lady Lay' was the first song that sounded as close as it did to how he originally heard it in his mind.*
DOR.... thanks for watching....... Joe
This story's characters were layered smoothly like an engineer building a song. Bravo!.
Thanks Dewy... joe
Thanks for sharing this great story Joe 👍🏻😎
Amazing story Joe! Tell me, who would not have wanted to be a fly on the wall during those recording sessions? Thanks Joe for the videos, classics for certain ............ 👍👍👍👍
Like most of the best stories, this one leaves you wanting more. Thanks for the bits you could get.
I love this song. Thanks for sharing the history behind it. Cheers!
One of my absolute favorite Dylan tunes. Great story 🎸
More Cowbell!!! 🐮🛎
I wondered who would be the first to say more cowbell!!!! very funny... congratulations Minister:)
Short but sweet...love all the corroborating stories👍
Thank you I just love this stuff..
Thanks for this. It's always great to find out what went into producing a record, especially when it involves legends like Bob Dylan. It would be great to find out how Dylan's latest master piece "Murder Most Foul" was made.
Oh boy I'm going to watch all of this
Awesome talent!💫
Thanks! That was great.
Love this Stuff Joe! Thank you
Thanks 6412............ Joe
This is for my Lola my beautiful girl stay with me stay I love you so much x
Bucky Baxter, pedal steel & slide player for Dylan, passed away this week. He won a couple of Grammys with Bob.
First I've heard of this. What a bummer.
Awesome! Thanks!
Bob said, " there's one thing this song needs, more cowbell!"
Ace... That SNL sketch was one of my favorites... makes me laugh every time I see it. Best, Joe
I've been listening to Nashville Skyline since you posted this. I can't stop cracking up now when I play it. Beautiful.
Wow
I always thought those were pots and pans LOL- the way they tweaked the EQ on the 'bongos' makes it sound exotic. I would guess they did a 2nd take for him at the drum kit. Very tasty but 'eased back' licks on the drums and the Bongo / Cow bell pattern is not an easy pattern. Thanks for the insight!!!
Charlie McCoy in his segment in this video says that Kenny Buttrey played the drum set AND some of the auxiliary percussion at once. I don't doubt that because Kenny Buttrey is a fabulous drummer.
Nope, one take, three instruments and a swivel chair. He showed me how he did it once. It's still hard to believe.
My mom went to high school with dylon
More cowbell and bongos in the back. Ha. More great tales.
The 69 original was great and permanently etched in my memory. Why did he ruin it on every live performance I've seen so far...nothing like the original
It ends just as its getting interesting.
Hi Met.... this is a bonus clip we recently found we are adding to the Nashville Sessions clip we put out not long ago. Check it out for more Dylan session stories... Best... Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Yes, Joe. This is a fantastic clip. But it's too short! And I've searched but can't find the full-length (or longer) version you're talking about. Help me out, please?
Hi Dan... Just go to Musicians Hall Of Fame “Backstage “ Vault Series. It’s Bob Dylan The Nashville Sessions. Kenny’s clip about Dylan was very short. His widow actually made the interview with him years ago and shared it with me for the museum to use. The other clips I shot about 15 years ago except Pete Drake. That was a tv interview from the 80’s. Hope you find it and enjoy it. Best, Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Got it! "Introducing Bob Dylan - The Nashville Sessions." Thanks so much, Joe!

amazing,brilliant story and song.
Pete Drake made that song.
Pete knew how to lay the perfect part in every song he recorded. Never over play. Just add what is needed and lay out... Thanks for watching... Joe
