Portugal is better than I expected. Well done Firaxis! This civ looks like fun!
Large maps with Owls will be insane! Portugal+Auckland will be pretty sweet too.
The extra sight will help with exploration so you can find those civs and max trade routes sooner. That's a nice synnergy. It will also help with quicker circumnavigation and grabbing those remote tribal villages before anyone else.
Not sure how I feel about the unique building and tile improvement yet. The extra science could be nice, but coming so late I wonder how useful it will be. The feitoria looks powerful, but all those placement restrictions look intimidating. Not sure how good it will be in practice. If resources are not set to abundant, I can easily imagine games where you might only get one or two in your entire empire, even with planning ahead! I guess I will have to play around with it to find out.
Anyway, looks like a fun civ. Not sure it has any victory advantages though, so probably not going to make S tier. At best, it will be A- tier.

  • @robertstegmann9260

I really like this design. I really enjoy unique civs, but this seems rather unique without being too out there. A really cool unique building (A non-military building that boosts military, plus extra science based on terrian), and the idea of sailing around to boost your trading abilities. A far more interesting design than the Suzerian bonus for Lisbon. Do note that the Navigation School's bonus science will not be boosted by Rationalism, as it does not add to the building's yield.
The Nau seems like the weakest part. It's main benefit is being able to build the Feitoria. Lower maintenance will mean you can build more of them, but they are not any cheaper. The Venetian Arsenal and Press Gangs will help you spread the Feitoria since you will have more Nau. Use the promotion to get Helmsman to navigate faster. I wonder if the Nau will not go obsolete since you can only build Feitoria with the Nau. If they do go obsolete, you may have to delay getting Steam Power so you can keep building them. I tend to play with Take Your Time, so this will be less of an issue, but you may feel rushed.
I wonder if they will be able to trade with inland cities that have a harbour, or cities that are accessible by canals. I really hope their ability works with canals, since it seems a lot of the time trade routes go onto land instead of going through canals. Note that domestic trade routes can go by land.
They seem that they will be really fun. I recently tried a medieval start colonial game with England, and had a lot of fun (Even though I won a culture victory too early to really develop all my colonials) so I can't wait to try out a similiar game with Portugal. I always find having a massive trade empire is fun, and this ability is just perfect. The extra trade route distance will mean you don't have to settle far off cities to have trade routes reach.
As far as optimal play, Democracy will be a no brainer. The extra production and food is already huge with any civ, but since his ability affects ALL yields, you'll be getting 6 production and food, and a massive 9 production and food if combined with Wisselbanken. They aren't kidding, trade routes with allies will bring in tons of yields. Odd that at 0:36, the faith yield from the trade route isn't boosted, which seems like a bug.
For optimizing trade yields, Colonial Taxes will be a good option to boost gold even further if you have a city on a foreign continent that can be your main trade city. If you find Paititi, you'll get a respectable extra 6 gold per international trade. If you are able to secure Suzerainity of Kumasi, which I think is one of the best city states in the game, you'll be getting an extra 3 culture, per specialty district in a trade route with a city state, plus the extra gold. Wonders that specifically boost trade routes can be useful, like the new Torre De Belem. Kilwa Kisiwani will also be good to get, especially in your main trade hub, but then again Kilwa is always good. Try stacking as many multipliers as possible, and you'll be supporting your empire on trade.
As an alternative to making one trade hub, trying finding a good foriegn city and spamming Feitoria. Remember that the +4 gold and +1 Production is boosted by your ability. With a lucrative trade destination, you could have many cities going to one destination, since you cannot have multiple trade routes with the same origin and destination. Kilwa Kisiwani will still be a huge benefit, as well as many of the other trade bonuses outlined above.
Merchant Republic will be the ideal Tier 2 goverment, for the Diplomatic and Economic slots to boost trade routes and gold production, as well as tons of Gold from a governer in your main trade city. You'll want to pick up Press Gangs anyway. Alternatively, Monarchy can help get you envoys to gain Suzerainity. Tier 1 goverments are more flexible. Classical Republic will be a great economic boost and help you secure trade boosting great people. Oligarchy can boost your naval melee units to help you secure coastal city to start trading as well as having more trade units. Autocracy can help you get early wonders like Great Lighthouse, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Kilwa Kiswani and Colossus, although the latter is somewhat mediocre, but can get you great yields late from the incredible value you get from trade routes.
You won't have paticular bonuses to religion, so you may want to ignore it. Religious Community could be useful to boost your gold yields, but it depends on your destinations. Other than that, no beliefs have any paticular synergy with your abilities.
As stated in the video, alliances will be a great option to boost your trade routes. Try to ally yourself with civs that have plenty of coastal cities to get the most out of trade. Additionally, your allies can't spy on you, preventing them from Siphoning Fund from your trade hubs. The Diplomatic Quarter will also help protect you from spies and give you benefits for good diplomatic relations. Do note that some naval civs may dislike you for hogging the coastline, making allying them difficult.
As stated before, Kumasi is a great option for Portugal. All city states that boost trade routes will be great for Portugal, such as Chinguetti, Bandar Brunei, Venice, Singapore (It's bonus is not boosted), Hunza and Samarkand. Even the city state formally known as Lisbon may be useful, since all your international trade routes are over water tiles, which will be useful when waging war.
When playing Secret Societies, Owls of Minerva is a no brainer. Not only are they incredibly strong in general, the extra policy slots will help you get trade boosting cards and later the Democratic Legacy card. Since you'll be settling the coast, you'll have ample opportunity to set up a Harbour/City Centre/Commercial Hub triangle, providing lots of gold, and with the Gilded Vault, culture and two trade units. Extra spies can be used to protect your trade hubs from enemy spies, as the gold gained Siphon Funds is based on the gold yield in the city. Additionally, the extra envoys will let you dominate the city state game.
If playing Heroes and Legends, two heroes have paticular synergy. Sinbad is obvious, since you can explore earlier and meet as many civs as possible, as well as netting yourself a ton of gold while you are at it. Maui has an interesting synergy. You can create bonus and luxury resources near foreign civs, and then build Feitoria to boost your trade routes. This is even better if you are Suzerian of Venice or have Torre De Belem. Other Heroes like Hercules and Anasi will be good, but this is because they are good in general.
    Let's talk victory types.
Religion is your weakest. As stated, Portugal doesn't have any synergy with religion. Pick up a religion if you can, but it probably shouldn't be a priority.
Culture is somewhat weak. You don't have paticular bonuses towards tourism, but trade routes and open borders from friendly relation will help your tourism pressure.
Domination will be decent. Your bonus lend themselves to peaceful trade, but you can use your gold to fund a massive military and the bonus production towards naval units from Navigation School as well as the extra sight will help you dominate the seas. Extra sight is really useful against human players who are trying to have a sneaky navy. Venetian Arsenal will be helpful, but keep in mind you only get the free unit if the naval unit is produced and not bought. If you run out of allies to trade with, trade with city states to gain nearly the same benefits (Or even more, with Owls of Minerva and Kumasi) Watch out your trade routes are not pillaged. You could try to only take a Civ's capital and then liberate some of their cities, allowing you have their capital and then have them be friendly afterwards. This allows you to have a great trading partner while you conquer other civs.
Science will be pretty decent. The extra science from the Navigation School is nothing to scoff at, and production from trade routes can help with your space race projects.
Diplomacy is probably Portugal's best in my opinion, although science may be better. Portugal is great for having a great economic game, and diplomatic victory often involves building up a great economy while you wait to win, . You'll benefit greatly from alliances and diplomatic quarters, and your riches will greatly help aid missions. Your bonuses to war listed in the domination section will be useful for liberating cities and production from trade units can help with CO2 projects.
Overall, Portugal is a great generalist civ with massive yields from trade routes.

I play on huge maps with 13-20 civs. This will be crazy time.

I can't believe they managed to pronounce "casa da Índia" both with a spanish and brazilian accent. I'm so triggered.

Man, this civ looks amazing. I already spam harbors and international trade routes in most of my peaceful games, so this is basically a perfect fit for me.

Well, they didn't ask any Polish how to pronounce Jadwiga lines like a proper human.

I wasn’t excited about Portugal because I was hoping for another indigenous Civ like the Navajo or Iroquois and not a historical colonizer, but now that I’ve seen this video and heard about the gameplay they do seem like a lot of fun to play. I rarely do maps with a lot of water stuff but it’ll be a good excuse to do some archipelago or small continents map play.

My face was pretty much the Vince McMahon meme while watching this. Love naval civs. Love trade heavy civs. Love the look of Portugal.
