By the 1970s, taboos were beginning to fall from society, but many taboos were still firmly in place.
In 1977 Mother’s Finest released their now much-sought after album “Mother’s Finest” that included the song “Niggizz Can’t Sing Rock And Roll”. This title shocked and scandalized the church community:
An influential and powerful preacher read the band the riot act and so they decided to remove the song from their live act.
The song, however, exactly expressed what the group felt: The band founders wanted to create a mixture of black funk and white rock ‘n’ roll, so as to win over black and white audiences.
Sitting in Christian Wagner’s car (Christian Wagner was Rockpalast’s director from the very start) we heard their song “Fire” (1976) on the radio for the first time and we decided that this band has to perform at Rockpalast.
In the night between 15 and 16 February 1978 we received the written okay in a discotheque in Atlanta, Georgia.
The boxing match of the previous evening also involved the hopes of blacks and whites: Muhammad Ali had lost his world champion title to Leon Spinks. The spirit of the times can be best described by my experience in a bar in Atlanta where I was watching the transmission: The white “redneck audience” was glad that the loudmouthed boxer they still enjoyed calling by his slave name Cassius Clay, was beaten.
Not really the best conditions for the success of a band made up of black and white musicians.
When Mother’s Finest opened the second Rockpalast Night on 4 March 1978 at the Grugahalle in Essen, they were completely unknown in Europe.
That evening, however, they achieved cult status - a status they have kept until today.
Mother’s Finest overwhelmed the unsuspecting audience with songs typical for their style: “Give You All The Love” (1977), “Baby Love” (1977) and “Mickey’s Monkey” (1978), the last a cover of the Holland/Dozier/Holland song which Smokey Robinson & The Miracles made popular in 1969.
It is played at every concert of Mother’s Finest and shows the band’s deep roots in that kind of black music, which was mainly released by Tamala-Motown at that time.
Years full of changes followed. In 1984 the band split up.
Joyce Kennedy went on to a successful solo career. 25 years after their legendary conquest of Europe, Mother’s Finest once again performed at Rockpalast - and almost with the same line up.
On 20th July 2003 they played a concert at Satzvey Castle which included classics as well as exiting new numbers.
Both of these concerts are presented here in full!

One of the best live bands ever
The best. Not one of the beat
Mother's Finest is not in the past tense. THEY STILL EXIST! They still tour, they still play...and...they are still one of the finest live bands on the planet.
That’s awesome. I had the wrong info about them breaking up. I would very much like to hear them LIVE. Thanks for the correction.
SWEET , i JUST FOUND THEM & AM BLOWN AWAY ! WHERE HAVE THESE VIDEOS BEEN HIDING ? OMG ! THIS BAND ROCKS ! & THE KEYBOARD PLAYER ! WOW ! EVERY ONE OF THEM ARE BLAZIN' ! FIRE !
I saw them when I worked for Paul Reed Smith Guitars about 10 years ago. They played the PRS Experience at the Factory. They killed it!
Saw them in April 24 in Bochum! Still awesome!
Still kicking ass after 45(!!!) years: the best funkrock band you can imagine!

They're one of the most underrated bands ever! Fantastic ❤
This band was legendary for blowing headline acts off the stage.
I remember reading a quote by Journey's manager Herbie Herbert (RIP) talking about how Mother's Finest just ruled the stage when Journey played at PinkPop, Netherlands , in 1978.
@@tonfan AC/DC made Journey shit their pants too.
Few people had heard about them in Germany before this show during the second Rockpalast night ever in 1978. They blew us away. Their power, beauty and energy stole the show that night.
I am an American, who lived in Germany that year, and I found them to be very popular in Germany… however, upon returning to the states, I’ve never even met one person who’s ever heard of them .
What a shame!!
They are severely underrated and virtually unknown
@@brucejones8749 Weird... I'm from NC and they were quite well known here...
@@brucejones8749Bull!! I am from Georgia and they are Very well known!!
Die waren Montagmorgen in Nullkommanix Sold out.
MOTHER'S FINEST...was seriously a TRUE Power House Band, & a BEAST
I don't know how often I viewed this video. It always smashes me back into their live performances 40yrs back. What a time! THANKS for letting me part of this area and concerts with unbelievable power.
I have seen them for two gigs. Wonderful. And Joyce stands very near to the fans!
Selten solch pure Energie live gesehen.
The greatest soul fusion metal band of all time.
My god ...passion ...funk rock ...why did not this band be huge .icons ...girl singer ....out of this world ..
Mothers finest was great saw them many years ago.
OUTSTANDING!! 🫡👍🏻
Tragically, black soul music has been forsaken by their own…
truth
Whole Lotta Soul. Whole Lotta Rock n' Roll. Whole Lotta Kick Ass Music.
This was one HELLUVA band. I missed their energy once they departed the scene. Joyce K released a powerful LP after they disbanded. They were a HELLUVA force.. Thanks for sharing. This concert was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
They’re still together
Check out their website.
In Brazil in the 70s, there were some TV programs that showed the scene at the time. In one episode, among other bands, they showed Mothers Finest live playing "Give you all the love.." I was mesmerized. It was 1976 and the album with this song had been released...I ran to the store to buy mine. It's really absurd how they never got the success they deserved.
This band is great. I also especially love their stage energy. I can't believe that in my many years of existence I have not heard of them until now.
Eines der besten Konzerte im Rockpalast!!
The first time I heard about this band was when I came across one of their albums that was, sadly, in the last place it should have been-the 99-cent bargain bin at a Tower’s department store. It was about 1978, the same year I got my first decent electric guitar, a shameless Memphis Les Paul knockoff that even wore the model number LP-59! The album I got was the one with the notorious song “*****z Can’t Sang Rock-n-Roll.” That album turned me into an immediate fan. I never got to see them live, however, until I came across this RUclips. Their live performances must have been epic, if this show is representative. The whole band was amazing, blending rock, blues, funk, jazz and gospel in a massive gumbo like no other band I’ve ever heard. The duo lead vocalists were on fire, especially Baby Jean, and the whole band was so solid and locked-in like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I think Baby Jean was even better than Aretha (RIP) Franklin. The guitarist was a real standout, but this was a total, maximum group effort. I don’t know a thing about this band except that I’m loving, loving, loving every note. Thanks so much for posting this epic live performance by a band I never got to see in person!
The first time I heard of them was in Elementary School, because I grew up in Atlanta. 96 Rock
i Just Found them Today ! , EVERY BANDMATE IS 100% AMAZING ! WHY I AM JUST FINDING THEM IS UPSETTING TO ME !
Ruined by their record company who had no idea what to do with this incredibly powerful funk machine. Get the first album!
Record companies are the worst
One side says "turn me up", the other side says "louder louder' both at the end of each side.
Yeah, i worked for that record company...The Company went bezerk in the late 70s early 80's...Greed no Street...
Absolutely get the first album!!!
Record companies suck…and pretty stupid.
early 80's i was stationed near Stuttgart germany and saw this band live . Wow they smoked the house , it was awesome and im glad there still around delivering great music
I was stationed in Ulm, in the 80s ,I saw them at the Donau Halle.
First concert I ever went to. I was 13 years young! That was 45 years ago. Still lovin’ this band. They still perform regularly in Europe.
I wanted to catch this concert but had to go to the field in Hohenfels. Was stationed at Storck Barracks in Illesheim at the time…Our band was named “Free Funk”…😎👍🏾
Darmstadt-1976
Zwei brucken, 1978 to 1980 !
Watching the Rockpalast festivals at the Grugahalle was a yearly ritual. We had the TV hooked up to the PA in the rehearsal room. There were chins dropping all around. Dig that funk, accuracy of riffs and runs and Jesus what a voice on that woman! They blew us away and from then on we aspired to be like them. Never forgotten that long and loud night. Truth gonna set you free!
It seems to be my story.
Would have been better to hook up one of the radio stations that broadcasted the concerts simultaneously in stereo (depending on your location). TV sound was only mono at that time.
@@Fastvoice That's exactly how we did it. Thanks.
Many Funkrockers have learned from Mother's Finest... Lenny Kravitz, Prince, Tina Turner, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Guitar Watson...
I heard MF the first time in the house of my friend, 1978, and he played "Dis go this way..." I was so impressed, and the rythm took me automatically over ^^ Wow, it was Dance Rock, fantastic!
I've never forgot this Powerband since then, they led me to Funkrock... and it's my fav music since then ;) Specially the keyboarder and the guitarist are impressing me.
MF still come every year to Germany ! :P There's a strong connection between this powerful american music and germany since this legendary Rockpalast concert.
Absolute Funk Powerhouse!!
I lived in Darmstadt, 1976 to 78
Damn! Every member is powerful as hell! That bassist and female lead singer are fierce.
Saw them almost monthly around Atlanta before they ever got noticed. Partied with them.l never understood why they didn't get the acclaim for the greatness of their music and showmanship
what was that club located behind alex coolees electric ballroom .the ballroom would have some big international act and mommas finest would still pull a big crowd ...and the fox theater would have another huge act across from alex coolees 3 different musical venues all in one saturday night. Atlanta was a rockin town in the 70s and eighties
That would have been the Agora Ballroom@@geoffreykennard5829
Just Found These Guys TODAY ! A DEAR Friend Mentioned Them ,, And i Said , WHO ? ,, MY NEW FAVE BAND ! DAMN ! GOOSEBUMPS ! EVERY BANDMATE IS TOPS ! WOW !
I loved the rock and funk of this band , I saw Mother's Finest at the Hampton Coliseum , The Mothership in the late 70' s , Baby Jean was awesome
What a sound! I remember when I first heard them I was blown away. Late seventies/early eighties. Magic Carpet Ride and Baby Love changed what I was listening to.
I advise you strongly to listen to their early 1990's album Black Radio Won't Play this record. First record in which they succeed to record the raw energy of their live performances. It is already a favorite next to my Sgt Pepper's album, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Genesis' Selling England by the pound.
Was a big fan in the late 70ties, forgot a bit and waow this show reminds me iof their awesomeness. They were top op the bill worldwide then recognized by musicians. That white guitarist black female singer was such a hot combination.
Nobody, and I mean NOBODY has ever married funk & rock better than this band. No - the Chili Peppers aren't even REMOTELY in the same league with MF!
First saw these guys in a bar 42 years ago. Incredible live performances.
Epic dropped the ball on Mother's Finest. Huge.
Not true really, they pushed them hard nationwide, but for the most part no one was interested outside of the South. They were hard to place as far as a format outside of rock stations. Black stations for the most part didn't play them, and they had little impact on Top 40 radio stations. An amazing live act for sure, but not every great band makes it on vinyl. That being said I still have all my LP's thru "Iron Age" which I consider to the best LP they ever did. It was also a huge flop for Atlantic.
@JClaus1221 Black radio would have gave them a chance if they would have incorporated some Funk sounds in their music. Plus, Love Changes was played on black radio stations at that time.
This is what's bin missing in music. WELCOME BACK!!
Saw many times here in Atlanta Georgia in the 70s, never fail for a great show! Dance the night away!
Greatest Funk Rock Band of all times. Saw them 5 times live and they still sound awesome.
Saw them on the same bill wiht Angel, Humble Pie, Frank Marino & Maghanoy Rush. I was down front and have some old photos from that night. Great show.
I saw the same tour. It was Freaking awesome!!
I saw that tour also and had completely forgotten about it until now.
Angel had to cancel at the last second but apparently were already in the venue because their singer came out and sang with one of the other bands for a song or two.
I saw MF several times. Usually great. Once the male lead singer was wasted drunk/high and could barely stand. He fell more than once. It really sucked.
I believe I read that David Lee Roth was crazy about MF.
1980 Same Bill in San Antonio. Great fucking show!
I first saw them outdoors at champagne Jam in Atlanta at GA Tech football coliseum about '78
Iron Age (1981) is awesome (hard)rock record!!!!!
Their best. MONSTER album!
'MF' came to Charlie Goodnight's in Raleigh, NC USA regularly when I went to college there in the late '70s and we never missed their show. My friends and I got so close to the stage that their sweat was flying off and hitting us. They were very much into relating to everyone in the room, feeding off the crowd's energy, and would look you straight in the eyes and smile back at you. Mother's Finest was a powerhouse funk rock machine and could unite the room into a dancing frenzy, mellow it out, then take you right back up again and do that for three hours. Wow! Great memories, absolutely great band.
This was excellent !!💥💯🔥🔥🔥🎼 the funkiest rock band ever!!❤❤❤
I’ll definitely checkout the whole hour.
Mother’s Finest in 1977 we played week after, came in night before caught the show at “The Whipping Post” Augusta GA. Can’t recall the venue in was in an old bus depot turned concert hall/bar near Oak Ridge TN. Or SC.
At the time on the southeast circuit. I was 21, blew me away. I survived the road “showcases,’ the late Steve Cole was our manager at the time and owner of Ithaca Agency out of Louisville, Kentucky.
The first concert I ever went to was Mother's Finest back in 77 or 78 in Greenville, SC.
This was just great it blew me away the energy awesome. Perfect sound tight as a machine at full swing really beautiful balanced musicians
This is one of the greatest bands to ever exit.
Saw them at The Treehouse in Charlotte once and was hooked. Any and every time they came through town I HAD to see them. Such great memories!
Woooooooooow their very good I never really heard before
Powerful band! Great musicians!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Damn! How'd I miss these monsters? Fantastic. Headbanging all the way through.
i JUST FOUND THEM TODAY FROM A FRIEND ! i'm BLOWN AWAY !
So fun live. You cannot feel it through a PC, but you really get into it whether your a fan or not.
Watched them live only once, some 10 years ago in Germany. On my top 5 list along with Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Whitesnake and Al Di Meola. Best female voice ever when it comes to bands. Moses Mo among my top 5 guitar players, BB Queen Borden one of my top 5 drummers. Best stage performers ever. Best song arrangements. Best funk rock.
What about Wyzard - killer bassplayer!
MF playing in Raleigh NC March 1, can't fuckin wait!!!!
Great show in Clemson around 1976 on Campus in a small venue. Will see then again in February 2024 in Walhalla, SC. You got that right - about 2 hours from their base city of Atlanta. Venue seats about 400 - looking forward to a great show!
Phenomenal band...absolutely terrific ❤
Saw then tonight in Conyers Ga. They were phenomenal!!!!
Joyce Kennedy and Glenn Murdock : Vocals. Jerry Seay: Bass. Gary Moore: Guitar. Mike Keck: Keyboards and Barry Borden: Drums. What a band ...
The first rock gig I ever attended in my hometown of Freiburg , 1980, MF, Freiburg Stadthalle….Love is a drug….
I remember the album Mother's Finest-Another Mother Further. My brother brought it home after his first Army tour in Germany in 1977. It was a rocker of an album!!
I can't believe I've not really heard of these guys and gal and they are seriously great!
Good to see my man Wizard on the bass once again!!!
Partied with them backstage at Alex coolies electric ballroom in Atlanta new years eve 1976.best band ever
Was in Atlanta at the Cotton Club on a weeknight and they had a local band play a song of theirs. Never heard of them and that song stop me in my tracks and had to watch them perform it. That was mid 92’/93’/94. Some where’s in that gray cloud of time…HUGE fan on them ever since
i used to go see Mothers finest at a little club behind alex cooles electric ballroom back this 75 and 76.. always loved them hot high energy funk rock
Their Live album from back in the 70's was great.

I was stationed at MacDill AFB Florida around '77 and the FUNKED the club out!

Still fabulous❤❤❤

Effin great! I remember this incredible band from my youth in Sweden. Saw them in 1990 in Stockholm, the same year my youngest son was born. I'll treasure it for as long as I live.
Thanks for posting this!! What an UNREAL band. Heard of them but am shocked by how baddasss this is. Mother’s Finest. Got it.
great band
Wow really really really freaking good
Saw them at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD the following year in 1979...Joyce Baby Kennedy wooed the crowd when she sang Love Changes...one helluva show!! oh almost forgot, Bootsy's Rubber Band and Cameo were there too, and they tore it up too!
