- “Black People Surf?” is a documentary that chronicles the renaissance of Black surf culture in Southern California.
It’s no secret that Black people are not the first that come to mind when you think of water activities or surfing. But what if we told you there were communities all around the world where Black folks are meeting at the beach and communing in the water to dispel those ideas?
This documentary follows the founders, instructors, and surfers who are committed to building a more inclusive surf community through their collectives and non-profit efforts. We hope this film will help inspire those who do not know how to swim into changing the tide.

Finally taking the plunge for my first few surf lessons. Only took me over 20+ years to answer the call of the ocean
. East Coast here….pardon the length & true disclosure…one of our now grown up children sent this to me.
I think it’s because it was the opposite for us.
I was born in the 60’s & as a woman of African American Caribbean descent, I gratefully did NOT experience the fears of water described by one in this wonderful video.
Growing up along the Atlantic Ocean in Connecticut, my siblings and I were taught to swim competitively and for pleasure as my parents made it a point to
make swimming, pool and beaches an integral part of our lives. In fact our white family physician told them to keep us healthy we needed “sun, surf, sea, & sand”. It also helped that my parents are both from the Caribbean and ironically met on the beach in the late 1940s after WWII. My Dad used to dive for conch, oysters, pearls, -yes on a single breath….Black people in the Caribbean and water & swimming are definitely “a thing” & often go “au natural” 🤷♀️….Fast forward…our grown up children are human fish as well. So yes, black people have been swimming 🏊♀️ & water sporting for generations…So glad that you all are doing your part in shifting old paradigms that kept generations of our people from experiencing blessings of sun ☀️ surf 🏄♀️ 🏄♂️ sea 🌊 & sand.. 🏖 See y’all next time I’m in SoCal…Thanks for sharing!! ❤️
I’m taking surfing classes in March kinda nervous being black Bt it’s something I’ve always wanted to try

Such a nice content! I’m a Brazilian surfer and even in here that’s so many similarities about everything you guys talked about on this. So much to change, but we are doing it 💪🏾

Makin waves on and off the beach 👑
As a 25 year Black surfer, I’ve connected with other Black surfer who protect me. We refer to ourselves as a tribe and travel globally. During our travels we purposefully have limited or no interaction with white surfers. Why? The racism and false sense of entitlement is epidemic. Many have tried to infiltrate our tribe, but we respectfully decline. Yes, there are probably a few white surfers who don’t subscribe or partake in racist behaviour, but we prefer to keep it in the family.
Go to Hawaii they are so welcoming to blacks.check it out.
Nothing wrong with that at all💯
If there is one thing that’s inclusive (and needs to remain inclusive), it’s gotta be surfing.

This was so cool and fun to watch.
Wow truly amazing I had no Idea they had the courage to float in the water, good job for them I can't believe this is such an incredible task for them too achieve given most of the cannot swim I am so proud of this, makes such a big difference in my life I am going to come back and watch this every year to remind myself how these people over came the stigma of swimming like rocks, life changing.

White people surf vid going to be on my channel soon
TERRible first question! i wish surfing culture was the same as SKATEBOARDING! Racism talk is so boringgggggg
Agreed, just have fun. Color, racism, us, our, them, their narratives will just ruin everything. There were black californian surfers in the past, and there were legends such as Larry Bertleman and Buttons Kuhiokalani.
It’s sad to see that racism run rampant in Malibu and the surrounding surf spots. Seeing that GoPro video of those white surfers being agro is all too common. I like how Julian explained that the water is for everyone and entitlement to a surf spot because your white and you live there is wrong. I surf in Santa Cruz and localism is everywhere in Santa Cruz. It is very common for a local to say “ get out of the water, you don’t live here, I lived here for 20 years.” The ignorance.
great video 👍🏿/could have selected a talented rap artist tho 🎶is goofy👎🏿
