Faces of Africa : Surfers not Street Children

- South Africa has hundreds of children living rough on the streets, many spiralling into crime and suffering from the effects of addiction. Eighteen year old Ntando Msibi has gone from street kid to surfing star with many awards to his name. He was helped to this path by the Durban charity, Surfers Not Street Children and credits them with rescuing him from the harshness of life on the streets. Amongst its many programmes aimed at getting street children get back into society, it is surfing that has proven the biggest hit leading to the transformation of lives that many had given up on and has become a new wave of change with young black surfers succeeding in a sport once known for the whites.
When you're in good surf, it's simply not possible to dwell on what troubles you. The first few waves you duck under on the way out just wash it all away. By the time you're out back, it's as if you're cleansed and your mind is clear. As the social worker said, after each session, that would be a good window of opportunity to connect, when the mental noise and tensions have been temporarily washed away. So true!

For someone who has worked with street children for more than two decades in Brazil, this film was extremely inspiring and confirms all that I believe in with regards the children and young people that my own project has attended over the years. AWESOME!!! Surfing changed my life v in every way. It will do same for these boys. Respect of nature, health, learning the rules and in turn being looked out for by older guys , friendships that last a lifetime and so on.... I've heard there is a lot of prostituting of young girls in africa? Save them as well please and introduce them to the surf. Wash away their past.

Awesome film. I always wanted to go surfing when I was a teen. I bought surfing magazines...I only learned how to snowboard since living in New England we have long winter's. I tried water skiing in Cancun and stayed up on my first run... Because I was in a lagoon with Crocs it just scared me to stay focused 😂

Now there a lot of them out there,south African, Morocco,Ghana and the rest,am from Ghana and I have been surfing for about 8years and in my city I happen to be the only surfer her and am ever ready to get kids here into the game but the problem is the surf materials are quite expensive and I look foreword to get people who are interesting to help put smil

my old home town I surfed there for 40 years and learned to shape boards there
I live in England now on the devon coast and ive taught my dog Charlie Cowboy Pants to surf . I don't want to boast but Charlies top dog surfer of torquay. the surfs shit around here so u got to travel up coast 20 miles for a wave. he rides a mini Malibu 7'6" and im riding a thruster 6'7" and the waters cold here so we wear wetsuits year round. surfboard materials an resin are very expensive in the UK

I'm so happy to see there are still good ppl out there in the world like Tom and these kids. I live in America and since the last elections the whole country has been very divided and its been getting more violent and more absurd everyday. I wish that ppl in America could all see this video and take some notes and begin to see that we all live in this world together and we all pretty much want the same thing, to become someone who has a good job, family, friends and a happy stress-free life and are able to take care of our responsibilities and be a good person. If we all want to have these things we aren't so different like everyone thinks now a days so why fight each other, we shoukd be helping one another and bringing ppls confidence up and if they are feeling down, then do wut we cam to bring them up and make sure that they are happy and good... it's all about wut this guy did to help these kids and wut he and everyone else does to stick with it and never give up on them and u can tell it works, these kids are amazing and very good kids who now have positive life skills and a positive out look on life and want to help others. We need more ppl like these guys in this house or organization......
