- I watched a documentary many years ago of surfers who went to Liberia just after the civil war. They surfed some amazing waves and interviewed locals on their take on the war. It was sad and inspiring at the same time. I have always wanted to go to Liberia and surf Robertsport. I finally had the chance to do it where I went to represent the International Surfing Association running surf coaching and judging courses for them. We collaborated with the International Surfing Association, Provide the Slide, Universal Outreach and the Robertsport Surf Club.
We managed to surf in between all the training, meet some amazing people, learn about the history of the country and also helped them run a big surf contest.

99.9 % of the time I'm wasting time on RUclips. This last 18 minutes was well spent. Good Job. Thank you.
That’s good to know. Thanks mate 🙏
Epic surf documentary, raw and honest. Cant wait for the next one! And for any one out there wanting to learn to surf, Shannon is a next level surf coach!
Thanks bud appreciate it 🙌🙌
This was so refreshing! Excellent video. A far cry from the generic surf crap. So nice to see you sharing the stoke with others from other places!
Thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked it 🙌
Thank you for sharing this amazing journey!
Pleasure man. Was really fun!
Unreal. Should be the biggest news in surfing.
🙌🙌😊
Should it?
@IambiguousSegment The impact they're having on that area, seeing the amount of locals coming out to watch, the fact that it's Liberia..,....maybe not the biggest news, but in the big picture it's a big deal, most people won't even consider visiting Liberia.
@@Sol_Weird agree 🙌
@@Sol_Weirdthat's Libya , not Liberia smh . I'm Liberian btw
If you consider that unlike Western surfers, these Liberian guys probably didn't learn to swim in pools getting swimming lessons before getting into the ocean, them surfing is pretty gutsy. Bravo!
Totally agreed. We thought some little kids who couldn’t swim..they learn how to swim through surfing.
Epic video man . People like you are the ones making a huge difference in not only the surf world but the world at large
Ah thanks, appreciate it 😊
Wow bruv. Inspirational story. Amazing nation. Amazing waves. Goosebumps when I saw the crowds at the compo. Also those lefts are most certainly leg burners…they just go on and on.
Yes for sure I got goosebumps too! Hopefully you can join me next year brother!
Let me get Comrades done and we’ll speak 😁
Congratulations friend!!!
Beautiful movie, Beautiful People, and Beautiful work. ⚡️💪🌅👏👏👏👏❤️🙏
Thank you 🙏
Fantastic content mate!.Love ya work, great job🤙
Thanks Justin 🙌
Awesome trip, thanks for showing off this amazing place. If you have a chance to go back in the region, there are also some very nice breaks across the border in Ivory Coast 🇨🇮
Yes I’d love to go to the Ivory Coast!! Hopefully soon 😊
Amazing experience! Thank you for sharing
It’s a pleasure 🙌
awesome trip, looks like a wonderful country to explore ! you're ripping mate !!
Yes it is a good place to explore. You should head that side and do some exploring. And thanks 🙏
I was thinking half way through- pls show the local-students surfing… and then you did 🥰🥰🥰 So grateful for the work you do. Thank you 🙏 🙏 🙏
Pleasure 😊 It was super nice to be there and to see the locals surf!
Great vid , I enjoyed every minute of it.
Thanks. Glad you liked it 🙌
Great video, looks like a nice place and nice people, thank you!
Pleasure 🙌
Shayne McIntyre went there when he was doing On Surfari with Quiksilver back in the day. Then in the early 2000 teens, Sean Brody started a surf mission to the country. Bringing surfing to the villages and helping with humanitarian relief. The Pope actually blessed a surfboard for them. Stoked to you see you doing this great video and adventure. A lot of amazing breaks to discover in Liberia.
That’s super cool. Thanks for sharing. Maybe you need to head there too 🙌
Awesome thanks for sharing
Happy to see this
Glad you liked it
Thanks for sharing! Good work.
Thanks 😊
Nice video, great to give surf charity there, I'll definitely send a couple of surfboards to Provide the Slad. Hope Liberia gets better for the Liberians
That’s super good. Nice that you helped by donating boards 🙌😊
That looks awesome! First wave looked like a mirrored upp trestles on a medium day
For sure! It’s super fun there 😊
Wow this video is excellent!
Thanks Marvin 🙌
thx for the video man, so rad to see you share the awesomeness of surfing to the locals in these amazing places. robertsport has been on my docket of spots in west africa i want to surf for a handful of years now, thw other two main ones are bureh beach in sierra leon(not too far away from robertsport, relatively speaking ... ) and mayumba down in gabon, which is probably my number one spot I'd like to check out for sure. especially cause in gabon, it's still possible to view lowland gorillas in their natural habitat, an experience that sadly may be on the way out, unless we all change up our relationship with our planet. anyways, hopefully you get to surf one or both of these other spots as well. cheers man, peec. /blahg. 🤙🏼
Ah man you should make a plan to adventure to those places. They are amazing and you’d love it!
Fantastic, fantastic stuff bro, that’s awesome that’s on my trips abroad list top of!
Go for it and you’d love it 🙌
@@shannonainsliesurf slick bro! I’m working on it I’ve got a couple of knackered knees and slipped discs at the moment but I’m hoping one day I will finally get out there! Probably involves at least 12 months of mobility and core work first tho
Thanks for the share ! from France
Excellent!
Thank you 🙌
Sick video and cool story. Wish my backhand was as good as yours!
Thanks 🙏
Amazing Work !!
Thanks 😊
Cool mish. Surf and purpose. Key to a good life right there.
Thanks mate 🙏
Epic content! Puro stoke!

Great stuff

My bro epic! but travel to Liberia to surf on your backside makes it even more insane haha!
Haha I need the practice on my backside plus I enjoy it 🙌
Very cool.
🙌
local surf community, Isa... everyone involved have much to be proud of. Very cool!
Happy you enjoyed it 😊
@@shannonainsliesurfit's clear you've been weapon for good with your work...and with humility it seems to boot. God bless.
@@_davis435 thanks mate. God bless you too 😊🙌
This is what I remember from the 80s
Wow, that was different.
Lekker!
see you at a million views!
Hope so 🙌
Heard good things about Liberia. Convenient that English is spoken there as well...
Yes for sure. Go visit it. You’d enjoy it 🙌
Liberia was established by president James Monroe, his brother and other wealthy businessmen and politicians in the U.S. it was place to free slaves and it’s the oldest Independent country in Africa.
Very cool. Liberia and Ghana have been on my bucket list for some time.
🙌🙌
Awesome vid...Is there a consistent surf season !??south swell 😅
Thanks. I’m not sure how consistent it is, but the locals say it is consistent. I think the best time is from May- August 🙌
❤❤❤❤❤❤
:)
Those lefts are pure joy fun wow
Yep they are indeed!
Nice spot
Yes it is. Have you been?
Hardcore i traveled down west Africa on 95" down Maroc past Dakar . Amazing waves but some really heavy situations this white boy shat himself . Lucky i was with a 6'7 Les Norton type character that could get a laugh in any situation . We stayed there for 8 weeks surfing some mind bending point breaks
Wow that must have been unreal and hectic. Good experience to have though 😊
We all take ourselves far too seriously don’t we? Now that is a surf contest
So awesome! Did you leave any boards for the locals?
Yes I did 🙌
Eish bru too kiff
Haha lekker!
Hey great film! What did you use to film this doco?
Thanks. I used my iPhone and an old canon power shot video camera.
unreal
🙌😊
Now I know where to send all the boards I can’t ride anymore.
Yes great idea 🙌🙏
Nice video and shots of your self surfing... It would be nice to actually see the local african people surfing...
Thanks. I did put some videos of them surfing in there, but next time I’ll try get more videos of them!
Uhm, there are videos of locals surfing.
Try giving it another go-around.
@@surf101- 🙌🙌🙏
Beautiful country my ars.
It is indeed 🙌
Awesome stuff but you're nuts dude. I was in Special Forces for 7 years and did multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. These countries are very dangerous. You definitely want to think about next time getting some local flavor as security for you. Cuz you can get snatched up there real quick. RLTW 3/75
For sure. Thanks for the heads up🙌
My man from safrica he not a scared little merican
Went there back in 2013 when kwapuna was run by a couple dudes from cali. What did the bar owner charge you per night?
Oh nice! I don’t know the price. It was paid for by ISA because I ran a program for them.
I’d love to paddle out on like an 8’0” longfish ….
Sounds like a good idea 👍
hey can you link me provide the slide i have 3 boards one mini mal here just sitting oh we have no collection point's in new zealand
Hey, here is their social media profile link. instagram.com/providetheslide?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Surfers have been there since way before the war, those there who say they were there first are simply lying. sick vid tho, I'll head down there soon work on my backhand.
Maybe they weren’t lying, maybe they just never saw or heard of anyone surfing there.
@@shannonainsliesurf idk, but anyway the waves seem great :)
@@luka5580 🙌🙌
I just got one question how did you get your balls through customs when you came back from that trip?
🤦♂️
hi im a shaper from the gold coast semd me details to be able to send second hand boards over please
Hi that’s good news. The best is to contact Provide the slide. Their instagram is here instagram.com/providetheslide?igshid=Y2I2MzMwZWM3ZA==
Amazing work. Great video. Is there an opportunity to get involved?
Thanks. Yes there is 🙌 how would you like to do that? You want to join a trip or donate old boards?
@@shannonainsliesurf can donate a few boards, I own a board repair business here in Florida.
@@jeremystanley6815 great. If you send me an email on info@surfcoach.no I’ll link you up with the guys who collect boards and send to these places 🙌
the safest way to visit these kind of places is with the US Navy ))
Haha not sure about that 😅
If only the people in the west could understand
I know why they was going there! They like the smell from Napalm in the morning!😂
Dear dear, English is perfectly okay I’ve heard way way more hard to understand hip-hop in London
They speak hip hop in London?
@@shannonainsliesurf bro, I think they think they’re speaking a form of pidgin English, but in actual fact, I have no idea what any of them are talking about. They keep going on about licking doors down and stuff. Truly those boys you hung out with Just sound like they come from North Cornwall where are all the white folk sound as if they are from New Zealand? 🤷🏻♂️
@@shannonainsliesurf quite bizarre isn’t it but they emphasise different bits of the word or perhaps it’s just because I’ve got dyslexia. Did I resonate with this phonetic speaking instead of phonetic spelling?
By the way, the Earth is definitely flat. Some bloke just took a picture of the Alps from the Welsh mountain. It certainly explains those three bombings in the war.
The history is always the same. Politicians & big business
Mmm most places are like that i suppose..
Awesome insight into cultural diversity...the " progressive " politicians should let another couple of million into Europe 😅
Haha yep or they should just share and help their own people 😊🙌🙏
Right, the USA. Not Dutch, British, French, Spanish, or Portuguese. Sure
😅🥸
Because it’s a former territory of the United States
@@samcalven12 That is not why the place is jacked up
Publicity=crowds and the loss of cool places. All this internet promotion is a recipe for disaster, just as magazine exposure helped ruin lots of formerly awesome surf destinations. Sop naming spots, regions, and countries!! Accept the challenge.
I disagree with you. These locals could do with more tourism so they could grow their economy, make an income and feed their families. Maybe that’s something you should support instead of worrying about a place getting crowded.
Are you kidding me, you might end up surfing in a coffin
Haha we all made it there and back in one piece
cool but clickbait
🥸😴
@@shannonainsliesurf ? it literally is
Indigenous peoples were there long before freed Americans.
