this is such a beautifully done short film on a solid subject done in a raw and i giving way. Easily could be shown at the Tahoe Adventure Film Festival
Dakota you are right - typically the dominant group (white people) in a culture (surfing) are not actively thinking about how they affect minority groups (black people). To answer your question though, we treat people who don't look like us differently. For proof, take a look at Harvard's "Project Implict." You, like most everyone else, probably have some implicit biases towards people of other groups. Those biases are perceptible to those people as they affect the way you act. The day that we stop doing that is the day we get to stop talking about race :)
I don't see how race is even relevant in surfing? You look, sound and surf like any other surfer in the states. Imagine if I (as a white South African) made the same film and talked about the colour of my skin. It's unnecessary. Just surf!
Erlo, have you seen Endless Summer? It was released in 1966 and is about White surfers in South Africa. Since then, the vast majority of surf films have been about White surfers, and a lot have been filmed in South Africa. As the dominant group (White people) in a culture (surfing), sometimes we forget about how we affect minority groups (Black people). Sometimes we even think about it so little that we end up telling people that sharing their viewpoint is "unnecessary." Until we are able to change that, expect a lot more great videos like this one!
Why do you feel like you need to create packs? Just be yourself, lump with people together based on personality, not skin melanin content. Lmao bro you're a goof.
I knew a crew of black surfers in the 60's they never talked about race it was all about getting a great ride and some of them ripped. They got our respect. This is 2024. the ocean washes racism away. on the waves nobody has a color or a race we're all brothers and sisters. be together and just surf. surfing is a choice and if you choose to surf you will be welcomed by the people in your community. if you go to a beach out of town you will encounter localism but never racism. you get respect at your local beach no matter what color you are. racism doesn't exist in surfing.
