- Today I’m going to show you how to make a delicious Korean crab stew called kkotgetang (꽃게탕). You can enjoy not only sweet crab meat but also the spicy, savory, and hearty broth and soft, chunky, earthy vegetables. Rice, kkotgetang, and a few more side dishes will make for a complete and delicious typical Korean meal.

This is my favourite dish, and my umma always had a pot on the stove waiting for me whenever I went to visit her. She is gone now, and I’m sad I didn’t learn more Korean recipes from her. Made this tonight, and was able to get frozen flower crabs from my local Asian market. Unbelievably flavorful, and SO delicious. I grew up eating Maryland blue crabs, so eating the crab was everything I've done since I was a kid. I ate this with my father in mind, since he passed some years ago. He loved crabs, and loved Korean food. I know he's proud of my Korean cooking, and he'd have loved this stew. Thanks, Maangchi! Tomorrow I'm making your kimchi peppers and your chicken mandu.

꽃게탕 국물 남은 걸로 밥 볶아먹어도 진짜 맛있는데ㅠㅠJust a pro tip: if you make fried rice with the leftover soup/broth, it'll be literally the best fried rice you've ever tasted!!! You're welcome.
Or when I was young I used to take leftover rice and put it in the broth. Heat it up and sip it at school.

To me, there is something comforting about some spicy soup, rice, and vegetables. I can't wait to try this recipe! I am learning so much from you, Maangchi 💖💖! You remind me of the sweet Korean lady that lived next door to my family when I was a child. She invited our family over to celebrate their daughter's first birthday and oh my goodness I remember her cooking food for us and it was amazing. We grew up knowing their family and I have always had love for Korean people and the cuisine. I recently bought your cookbook and have been trying all the different recipes. When I cook 1 1/2 cups of rice, I wash it thoroughly 1-3 times and put enough water on it. then I use the first line of my middle finger to measure water right before you cook it. you do this by submerging ur finger up to the bottom of the pot. 1 1/2 cups- 1st line, 2 1/2 cups for second line.. 3 1/2 cups for 3rd line.. but you still need to adjust accordingly to the type of rice you know.. it takes time to master the art of cooking fluffy rice!
I usually stick my pinky in, and if it reaches the top of the first "segment" (first line of my pinky), it's the right amount of water XD
I am a vegetarian, never saw cooking crabs close, I don't know why I am watching this at 1Am in the morning. Love ya mangchi eonni

I don't care for Korean food, everything is buried in hot red pepper, either paste or flakes or sliced, but I absolutely love this lady and watching her cook. I'm going to try to modify this recipe, although I don't know what can be used in place of the gochujang. I love the idea of the anchovies in the soup stock. I've never had chrysanthemum greens in anything, but I know where I can buy them. Fermented bean paste, white miso, easy. Flavor wise, is there much of a difference between the frozen Korean crabs and fresh American blue crabs? I know I can get blue crabs with no problem, but is it worth the time searching for frozen crabs? I have my next culinary project in this age of Covid! Thank you

Hi Maangchi! I made this crab soup tonight following your exact recipe and oh my goodness it was delicious! The soup had the most wonderful flavor, it was savory with a hint of sweetness. The crab was so soft and easy to eat. That initial bite into the crab was amazing!! My family loved it. I will definitely make this again and again! But after I came back from Seoul recently, I love it even better. I made kimchi tofu soup with ground pork and mussels and it was daebak!
