  • Ginseng chicken soup (in Korean, Samgyetang) is a hot, steaming, delicious dish that features a small chicken stuffed with rice, ginseng, garlic, and jujube. You have to commit to eating a whole chicken all by yourself when you sit down for a bowl of samgyetang! But it’s totally worth it. Full recipe: www.maangchi.co...

    One thing I really love about Maangchi is that she doesn't cut out the parts where she washes the food, her hands, sink, cutting board, knife etc. :) Many cooking channels don't show these parts, even though it's so important

    Maangchi!!! I made this last night for my mom and myself. It's not summer time, but it's turning into Winter soon and she's getting over the flu and has the chills. This was so simple and affordable to make, and oh my goodness, the end results were fantastic. She loved the broth and jujube (she wanted more jujube in the soup but I told her it would make the broth brown). Not only did she love it, but she felt so much better the next day that she was able to go back to work. This was absolutely delicious and I loved it with the sweet and sour dipping sauce recipe you provided. Can't wait to try this again, this was so delicious!

      whytedaises it feels a bit wierd to cook chicken soup with so many fresh garlic. We always use fresh ginger which will eliminate the unpleasant smell of meat and make the soup delicious...not sure want to try garlic for my chicken soup🤔

    • @bowhong4429
      @bowhong4429 7 лет назад +43

      ann wang, I always use a lot of garlic in my chicken soup, even in the westernized chicken noodle one. The garlic turns sweet when cooked for a long time so they also become delicious. Give it a try next time. You will be glad you did.

    I'm 20 and my parents are growing old right before me too quickly. My dad and I do not have a words-of-affirmation type of relationship but I know we both have a similar attitude on food. I know parents always say that their kids grow up too fast but I really get a sting on my chest too whenever I see my dad dyeing his white hair back to brown, or whenever he complains about his knees, or some other manifestation of growing old. I wish they'd stop growing old too. Parents have had a life before and beyond their children, while we on the other hand, have known them all our lives and will continue to know them for the rest of it. I just really went here for this recipe to cook for my dad and got really broody after having to confront the fact that, for a while now, I have had to look up energy-boosting/age-defying/bone-strengthening recipes for my old man.
    Thank you for this recipe. This is such a hearty, nourishing dish. I'm sure everyone who makes this is full of love.

    Made this soup today, it was hot outside. It was great. We found a package in a Korean grocer that had the jujubes, ginseng, sticky rice and a bunch of other stuff that looked like bark. We had to add more rice. Our chickens that were small. It was a real hit and we devoured everything, but we didn't eat the bark.

    Very nice menu. I ate this stuffed chicken in a local restaurant in Busan together with my Korean friends whom I enjoyed their company the night before in a house party, after long working day we had a lot of boozing in the evening and after eating this chicken in the morning I felt as if I hadn't have all that boozing and a lot of energy, so thumbs up to you, Chef.

    I spent time in seoul for some training 20 years ago. I did not understand korean and i saw this small hole in the wall restaurant lined up with people. The only thing they served was samgyetang. I asked what it was and the lady just put a boiling hot pot in front of me. I fell in love with the dish instantly, so too with korean food. But samgyetang in my number one all time favorite.
