About one year ago, I purchased a used 2020 S 60 Momentum with 34,000 miles on it. Currently, it has 38,000 on the clock. Since I plan to keep this car a long time, I thought a transmission fluid change would make sense. I called the local Volvo dealer and asked for a rough estimate of the cost for this service. Shockingly, the service manager told me Volvo has no service indice and that the fluid is lifetime. I told him nonsense, and he said he'd have to figure it up, and it would be time and materials as a result. He called me back the next day and said that with fluid, gaskets, and labor, the total would be $589.00. I told him thanks, but no thanks. I'm sure it wouldn't be multiple fluid replacements like presented here. Come spring, I'll crawl under the car and do this myself with multiple fluid changes. Thanks for the helpful videos.
From what i have heard is that they only use 4 liters of oil to flush with. That makes barely no difference on the oil. Do this yourself and it will be much better result with more than half the cost.
@StefanBergman This is exactly what I suspected. Also, what was a bit annoying was the service manager implying that a number of gaskets, etc, would need to be used for the service. Of course, I already knew it's only a couple of o rings involved.
Very good video. However, I recommend saving your money next time and flushing with a cheaper but compatible fluid that will be half the price of the Volvo fluid such as AISIN who makes the TG-81SC 8-Speed transmission and is likely what is in the original transmission (according to FCP Euro). Also, Castrol makes an "import" ATF (sold in America) that states on the bottle that it is compatible with all Volvo ATF specifications although it may not be "approved" by Volvo despite Volvo's close relations with Castrol.
I really appreciate your efforts to do an English version with the transmission flush! This allows me to be more brave in undertaking this chore. I have just discovered and subscribed to your channel and look forward to viewing all videos soon.
Very useful, the procedure is the same as the previous six speed auto which i have just done. however it took me six changes to get a colour similar to yours after three changes, I think adding the extra litre of oil each time helped a lot and I will do that next time. I am surprised there was no oil degradation counter to reset like there is on the six speed. Thank you very much.
Hi Stefan, thanks or your video. I have been able to do this oil change from the bottom without having to remove the airbox and MAF. I also used the same oil that is used in the 8 speed Aisan boxes used by Toyota/Lexus ( because they are the same box) using WS fluid (World Specification). I just used at small brass adapter and hose with 1 litre bottle and pump. It takes a little longer using the 20litre drum of fluid. The car drives so much better and the shifts are much smoother. @@d.hedberg I only reset the change counter. I didn't adapt it anymore. I use ThinkDiag. It changes gears well even before changing the oil in the box, so I did not adapt it.
Hey Stefan,,, quick one. I've been wondering, how is this possible that you had oil flowing after first levelplug (08:35) removal? 1. You did this on a cold engine, therefore there should be less volume than on hot engine. Secondly - after the whole job was completed, you have used the same plug to adjust (self-level) oil level at around 50C. Which makes me thinking that originally there was more oil... otherwise nothing should come out initially.. Am I right ?
I did follow the instructions well explained thank you . But only one thing is i didn’t reset the adaptations . What’s the reference of that scan tool ? Looking to invest in one to use on Volvo , bmw and Mercedes
Thank you very much Stefan for your time, could you tell me how you measure the oil level at 50 degrees? Do you measure it with neutral gear, parking, or direct gear? thank you
Very very nice video. I have 2019 v60 T6 and i am planning to change transmission oil and haldex to. This one will be very helpful. Thanks for very nice explanation.

@@StefanBergman also - I did my XC90 tranny flush yesterday and was successful following your video. Thanks again, you saved me time, $$, and I have the satisfaction of getting it done on my own. Great video, you helped someone halfway around the world!
I found that you need the car started, to enter the menu for the oil fluid counter reset. The adaption reset is NOT recommended after a fluid change. The reason being, that you are wiping all the stored data that your transmission has adapted for since new. This will worsen the shifts for a long period, increasing wear, if you dont follow the relearn procedure to quickly set the "rough" new shifting standards for the transmission.
How much oil flowed when the level was done. Last level. You put in 3,5 liters of oil and how many did you take out? Min 34:53. I put in 3.5 liters and took out 800 grams after the temperature reached 50 degrees. The first time after 10,000 miles, I removed 2,700 grams of oil.
There are no special amount to remove. Just open levelplug and it will set it self to right amount. I demo how it works in another video. ruclips.net/user/clipUgkx0E0gcOnKckB7qr9t20PFsBQcROoKVuOl?si=1pMEFPelVu9jNrFa

Good video :) and plenty valuable information, especially part numbers and oil quantity. Do you think it is necessary to do adaptation afterwards? Would it be possible do perform same oil change without having diagnostic interface (without checking oil temp for level purpose?) How long did you have it idling before it went up to 50C ?
Thanks Stefan. Do you need a special scan tool to get those options you had after you changed the oil to reset the adaption? My local Volvo dealer said that only a dealership can set that, and they charge $225 to run that.

Hallo Stefan , i am very pleased that you make an english version of your vlog, Please keep doing this because they are very interesting and for a much wider audience now.
A slight smoother shifting maybe. The thing is that you should do this operation before transmission shifts harder. For some people it solves problems with the transmission but thats not always.

@@StefanBergman Hi Stefan and thanks for the reply. That's not quite true at least when I bought the car here in Spain (2017), the XC90 indeed could be optioned with or without AWD. Maybe nowadays that's not the case. Anyway that answers my question and again, thank you again for the helpful video.
@@StefanBergmanLOL! I do a fair amount of mountainous driving, and some driving in very steep vineyards with dirt (sometimes muddy) roads. AWD has been a godsend in this case (of course I have a Nissan 4x4 truck for normal use, but I can’t take my clients in that old jalopy!). 😅
why does no one ever flush the gearbox via the oil cooler? surely this would be a more efficient way, i am intend to do this with mine and i suspect it will waste much less oil as you just flush until the oil runs clean, if i am wrong can you explain why ?
It's still gonna take the same amount of oil to get it clear. Its because of the torque inverter you need to flush it because you only mix dirty with new oil all the time.
yes i agree, but the advantage is not leaving any used oil to mix with the new so i am thinking dump out of the sump plug refit then flush with new until the out flow runs clear, should work IMO@@StefanBergman

Answer on your question. I would make adaption of the gearbox also if i was you.
Engine wasn't running when i opened small plug, always higher oil level then. Level should be set with engine on idle.
I did follow the instructions well explained thank you . But only one thing is i didn’t reset the adaptations . What’s the reference of that scan tool ? Looking to invest in one to use on Volvo , bmw and Mercedes
Autel MK906BT does a good job. Downside is that the license is kinda expensive to renew, around $600 for 1 year.
Thank you very much Stefan for your time, could you tell me how you measure the oil level at 50 degrees?
Do you measure it with neutral gear, parking, or direct gear?
thank you
About 30 minuters of idling should be enough
Very very nice video. I have 2019 v60 T6 and i am planning to change transmission oil and haldex to. This one will be very helpful. Thanks for very nice explanation.
Good luck. I have a haldex 5 video as well.

thanks for doing a video in english, highly appreciated! this was a fantastic guide 👌
Thanks!
Great video Mister, thanks por the class 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video Stefan!! Born and grew up in Minnesota, I can tell where our accent comes from!
Whats up in minnesota? Alot of swedes there?
@@StefanBergman Yeah, I'm sure so, but I moved to Kansas City in 91! I can still pull out the accent though when I go home!
I have reset adaptions many times and didn't really notice any difference in shifting.
Great job Stefan - i will change the oil on my V90 CC (with 144000km) in the next days on the same way.
Perfect 👌🏻
Thank you Stefan for this video. That is a perfect explanation, thank you for English. I did an oil change in my 2020 V60 with an ASIN gearbox. Do you have any comparison with a dynamic oil change? What is better (more safe, more effective)? I like the DIY approach - this is the main reason I follow you. How often do you change the oil in this gearbox?
I have nothing to compare with im sorry. Recomended intervall for changing is 6000km, do that and it will run smooth for a long time.
@@StefanBergman thank you. Only 6000 km or 60000 km? Can you confirm? Thanks 🙏
@@olew1983 haha sorry yes 60000km
Hej Stefan, I really like your work, I have been following your videos for a while now.
Can you suggest me which scan tool I should buy, here in Sweden, a buget one just for Volvo, to be able to read the transmission oil temperature. I bought transmission oil, but I realize that my Orbit scan tool does not have the ability to measure the temperature.
Tack!
I am not so familiar with different scan tools since I only have 1 other than Volvo vida.
Very Nice, "I have Näver Don't this Before" 😂👍
Blir nästa tröja 😂
@@StefanBergman Bra Video Stefan som vanligt! Kanske medveten strategi men du vet att du säger sitatet ovan i princip varje video? Absolut värt ett tryck på en tröja!! 😊
would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me the location of the fuel filter in the 2012 Volvo S60 T5. Thanks.
I dont know, doesnt say in vida either :(
hi, im planing to do the same things, what about the filter ? Volvo xc90 mk2 2019 momentum pro
thanks
No filter to replace unless you open up the gearbox
You are a real oil sheik Stefan. Really good video as always 👌. Kanoners Stefan, gick ju bra det där. 👍❤️👍
What size is the 17mm fill bolt? I’m trying to figure out what size funnel I should use to fill it up the fresh trans fluid
10mm max
Thank you for the excellent video it worked out perfectly!!! Would you happen to know the procedure for changing the transfer case fluid?
Thanks. No sorry i dont know how to do that.
Not necessary to do adaption, its recommended to do though. About 40 minutes on idle is enough to set level.
@@StefanBergman thanks a lot
Thanks Stefan. Do you need a special scan tool to get those options you had after you changed the oil to reset the adaption? My local Volvo dealer said that only a dealership can set that, and they charge $225 to run that.
Not a special but a good one. Its not the end of the world if you dont reset it either.
Hello Stefan! Thanks for the video, which is currently the only one for hobby mechanics! Could you tell me whether there is a transmission oil filter for the XC 90 II and how to replace it. I have the model D5. Is the oil change on it the same as on the T6? Thank you and best regards! Joseph
Yeah i think the transmissions are the same. There are no filter to exchange. Not unless you open the transmission i think
@@StefanBergman Thanks, Stefan!
Hi Stefan, does it is really neccessary to have the engine ON when you drain the last mililiters until you got the correct oil transmission level? Does it is safe? Do You read that on volvo vida instructions? Thanks in advance
Yes you do else the level will be too high
@StefanBergman last question, which kind of tool are you using to remove second nut of transmision cap? Allen? Which measure? Do you have any link? Thanks
It’s Allen 17mm and Torx 40
Hello sir im from Indonesia i love your video, can you tell me what is that Jack Lift name you used???

Hey man! Thx for the video in english. Much appreciated, going to do the oil change on my v70 with your instructions. Cheers!
I have a specific video doing this on a v70 as well, I speak Swedish but it think it is subtitled English.
Ill check it out, thx!
Hello! Good video! Maybe do you know how to change oil in angle gear? I can’t find the oil drain plug! Or our angle gears use oil from transmission? Thanks!
I have never done that so can't answer your question, I'm sorry
Hallo Stefan , i am very pleased that you make an english version of your vlog, Please keep doing this because they are very interesting and for a much wider audience now.
This was only a test too see if it makes any difference doing them in english. If it goes well i will keep doing these how to videos in english.
@@StefanBergman Hallo Stefan, I think it goes very well so please continue!
Hi Stefan! Great video!!! One question: after changing the trans. oil did you experienced changes during driving/gears changing?
A slight smoother shifting maybe. The thing is that you should do this operation before transmission shifts harder. For some people it solves problems with the transmission but thats not always.
Stefan, many thanks from Arkansas for the English version. Very good video, very informative. I just purchased a 2020 V60 Cross Country AWD, I believe it has the same transmission.
Yeah it should be the same transmission. Thank you
I love your videos Stefan. In English I can finally understand them.
Your English is verry good so pleas keep making them in Swedish and English!
My swedish viewers doesnt like when i do english videos. But if you would like subtitles on a video just comment under that video and i will fix it.
Fantastic job, thanks a lot for the useful information, didn't know 17mm allen will be needed!

Hi,Stefan! Great video,I have the same Automatic transmission and planning to exchange the oil.Could you please tell me how long time it takes (in minutes) to heat up the oil to 50 degrees,if I do this without diagnostic computer?
Approx 30-40 minutes in idle
Thanks, great job! But one question. On the last procedure when car was idling and you was setting the oil level did the gear was in N or P?
Its in P, always when setting the level.
That i was thinking just wanted to be sure. Thanks!@@StefanBergman
maybe you can tell me for a 2020 Volvo v60, engine capacity 2.0 diesel, What volume of oil to pour into the manual transmission
I dont know but i should say in the manual
Thank you for this video. My 2017 Volvo XC90 is a D5 AWD. Is yours a AWD as well? I assume the transmission fluid is the same in both the XC90 D5 AWD and XC90 D5 just 2-wheel drive vehicles? Kinda confused here.
All xc90 are awd.
Might be a Spanish model. I doubt you have much use of AWD in Spain 😄
Thank you! Very helpful to me here in New Zealand :) You speak very good English too.
Im glad it helped you :)
why does no one ever flush the gearbox via the oil cooler? surely this would be a more efficient way, i am intend to do this with mine and i suspect it will waste much less oil as you just flush until the oil runs clean, if i am wrong can you explain why ?
It's still gonna take the same amount of oil to get it clear. Its because of the torque inverter you need to flush it because you only mix dirty with new oil all the time.
yes i agree, but the advantage is not leaving any used oil to mix with the new so i am thinking dump out of the sump plug refit then flush with new until the out flow runs clear, should work IMO@@StefanBergman
hi whats your ODB Diagnostic tool called? and does that do the simple stuff like releasing rear parking brake for brake disc change

Hi Stefan ,Is there any problem to partially change oil once in the year with one 4l jug, without leveling? In this case the qantity would be one liter more in the box. This fact will help with temperature lowering, but is it dangerous with something else.
I wouldnt try something the manufacturer didnt recomend
Great video, Stefan! Can you share the manual from VIDA?
No i dont have access tro vida.
Is it essential to have the Vida to reset or can you just change the oil?
Can just change it

What sort of mileage/km interval do you recommend this is done??
60000km interval
Can you please tell us what size of Allen key socket you used to unscrew the drain plug on the bottom or put it in description below. Thank you for the very informative video, great job keep it up 👍🏻
It’s 17mm Allen on the drain plug and level plug is a torx 40.
