    Always inspirational videos; Just In Time (JIT). Did my 2008 XC79 today and glad I have a hoist. Found out that my XC has the Haldex 3 unit - seems to have a more accessible fill plug. After seeing FoMoCo plastered over all of the casings, I've come to the conclusion Ford designed components were deliberately designed to be almost unserviceable. I bought the manual CTC fluid extractor since it was on sale with a Princess Auto unit to replace the fluids. I'm awaiting the Haldex maintenance parts, including the pump since my AWD stopped working. Although I used CTC synthetic gear oil, I'll use Volvo Haldex fluid, avaiulable through Amazon., Your excellent DIY videos are always so instructional and help to convince this 51+ year Volvo owner that despite the FoMoCo influence, a Volvo is still repairable.

    On my 2013 XC70 T6, the drain plug faces the passenger side wheel, and is easier to get at than on the 2009 shown here. It's a 13mm hex plug with the copper washer.

    Great video. (I posted something similar on your rear gear videos so looks similar but a little different as ask specific question about rear gear vs angle gear). I’m looking to do this to my Volvo’s in the relatively near future. I've got a 2013 S60 T6 R-Design AWD and a 2015 XC60 T6 AWD. They both have the codes B6304T4 (Engine) and TF-80SC (transmission info).
    You mention removing 100 ml in the angle gear oil as well. Do you know if extracting 100 ml l is required for the angle gears in my vehicles as well? How did you figure that out as everyone I asked including 3rd party shops that work on Volvo’s don’t show a maintenance schedule so therefore have no info on how to change the fluid? I’m guessing that mine have the same angle gear as the one you show, but don’t really know.
    Also, removing 100 ml with a hose connected doesn’t account for amount of oil in the hose, so maybe should remove a little less I would guess. Better to be slightly overfull, then under full, right?
    Are angle gears vented? I know very little about angle gears but I would guess they are as most rear gears are vented.
    I'm probably going with a Red Line gear oil that is an API GL 5+ 75W90. It's a high performance synthetic gear oil and I’ve had great success with Red Line gear oils in the past.

    I've just done this on a 2013 XC70 T6. I did not find a reference on having to extract the 100ml at the end. Since the fill plug is facing the passenger on mine at a slightly lower position, comparing to the earlier models, I don't think the extraction of 100ml is required on the haldex gen5 variants. Also, I have used Liqui Moly 2048 oil since that is the OEM.

  • @avgavg001
    @avgavg001 6 лет назад

    Vida doesn’t say anything about the 100ml removal from the angle gear. It confirms that 50ml need to be removed from the rear diff and 40ml from the Haldex unit, but nothing from the bevel gear. I checked for a few models and years. Still No confirmations about the 100ml.

      I had the bevel gear go out on mine at around 150k (stupid previous owner never changed the oil). Mine only made noise as soon as I'd take my foot off the gas, it was a sound almost like a drill when using a very big bit. The sound was higher in pitch the faster my speed and would get lower in pitch as the car slowed down. If this is what is wrong with your car that means the gear is stripped, and the only way to fix it is to replace it or remove all the AWD components and turn your car into FWD only

      Only AWD models have it. The angle gear box transmits torque from the front-axle thru a 90 degree-angle to the propeller shaft that delivers torque to the Haldex AWD clutch unit, then on to the rear wheels.

    So why you take out 100ml?

    • @bachadaboy
      @bachadaboy 4 года назад +2

      So that the oil level is below the top of the drive shaft seals. If you don't take out the extra oil it will find it's way around the seals and weep out. It's just so it won't make a mess. Take a look at the schematic in the video that shows the syringe with the arrows to pull out 100ml. You can see that the fill plug is above the drive shaft seals. If you leave the extra in there it will be higher than the drive shaft seals and potentially weep out.

    • @frankcrank6262
      @frankcrank6262 2 года назад +1

      Good practice to avoid costly repairs is to change the transmission fluid, the bevel gear fluid, and the rear differential fluid every 30,000-40,000 miles. It's easier to change all three at the same time that way you won't forget any of them.

    That 100ML doesnt account for all the oil in that long plastic tube...

    • @HammyHammbone
      @HammyHammbone 3 года назад +1

      Owen Hoffmann
      IF you use the SAME, FULL tube that you used to add the oil with the pump, and IF after you filled it, were able to connect the syringe to the pump hose without losing ANY fluid out of the full pump tube, then yes.... you could theoretically get 100mL out by just measuring what is in the syringe.
      But this video shows a wider pump tube being used to pump the oil into the unit, the pump tube is removed when unit is full and over-flowing, and then an empty and thinner syringe tube is used to extract the 100mL once the oil in the unit is no longer dripping out. You would want/need to account for the amount of oil that is now in the tube by emptying the contents of the syringe AND tube into a separate container to be sure you are not taking out too much.

      The bevel gear went out on mine at around 150k (the idiot previous owner never changed the fluid). It would start making noise as soon as I'd take my foot off the gas. It sounded almost like a drill using a very large bit, and it was higher in pitch the faster my speed. The noise would get lower in pitch as the car slowed down. The gear was stripped, the only fix was to replace it

    Nice videos. If the vehicle is level and the shop manual says to extract a given amount, I would do so. They assume vehicle is level. If someone has the vehicle angled up on high ramps, the angle of the car could easily offset the 50ml extraction amount - think about it. Wait till diff or angle gear stops dripping. At this point we know that the fluid level is even with extraction point. Now back off the ramps or lower angled jacked point of vehicle and level the car on the ground. The fluid level will now be below the extraction point.

    it is very sad indeed that Volvo has very poor design for the maintanence (the engineers must be awarded the worst design award) . it is NOT difficult to put a drain plug. It is NOT difficult to set the fill plug in a position that filling to the top till oil drips out -instead of recommendation of aspitation 50 cc from rear differentail , 100 ml from angle gear and 40 cc from AOC etc. aspirating fluid from (the tightly spaced gears) from fill/drain hole is difficult and may shear even a stiff plastic smooth tube. . I understand from a local transmission center-in business for 23 yrs (person in 60s with lot of experience) that if one fills to the top till fluid drips out is A OK as extraction of amt of oil suggested in VIDA may not be accurate. also 40-100 ml +/- is unlikley to overheat (over extracted) or brake the seal if not extracted from fill level. thought it was a wise advice . perhaps if you write to VOLVO( a very respectable volvo repair for DYI site ) Volvo may listen. However I understand it has been sold out to Geely of China.
