I'm interested in changing the flui on a S80 I purchased but I'm worried. I had a Audi several years ago that had high mileage on it when I purchased it so wanted to change the transmission fluid. Once the new fluid was in, the Audi couldn't move at all when drive was engaged. The shop said the clutches in transmission were so badly burned, they could not pick up the new fluid. They actually threw the old fluid back in the transmission to get the car to move again. My question is... Should you change the fluid on a high mileage car if you're not sure if it's ever been changed? Is there any test that can be done before changing the fluid to know if it's ok to change it?
Perfect video...thorough, well explained. I love it when you tell us the exact tool sizes. Also very organized and clean. Thanks, I'll I view more from you!
I really enjoyed to see the care you took doing this work. Everything from being clean and using a torque wrench to not overtightening the screws that hold splash shield. If everyone took that amount of care our cars would be better and I would gladly hire a mechanic for repairs and services.
This is one of the best how to automotive videos I have seen. I purchased the kit and the wrong one but you guys helped me out by sending me for free the one piece that was different! The drain screw T40 had been previously stripped. With a dremel tool I cut a slot so that I could use a large flat head screw driver to take it out. (rather then drill and easy outs). Thank You.
After watching this excellent video I became motivated to change the fluid in my 2018 S60. I've had it for about 6 months and it would occasionally shift with a thump. It has 93k miles and pretty sure it hasn't been changed before as the fluid was quite dirty. Overall it was relatively easy although the fill plug was really tight and took a lot of force to remove. Surprisingly I didn't even make a big mess which is my specialty. After the second fill I plugged in the scanner and the fluid was already at 33C. but I was surprised how long it took to get to 50C. I didn't time it but pretty sure it was more than 30 minutes. Finally, I took it for a short drive and it seems to shift better than before.
you should let the transmission sit for 10 seconds in every gear (both ways up and back)...this will dilute the fluid properly the first two drains and give you a closer to bright red at final fill.
Your English is excellent, however, let me make one small correction respectfully: I believe you could use the word “empowered” versus “powered”. It is a subtle but important distinction. Thank you!

Thanks FCP Euro for this tutorial on to do this. Today my car made a big of a thud sound when I shifted into Drive. I've never had it happen before and it gave me a bit of a scare. After drining the gearbox & refilling , we the disconnected the oil output to the oil cooler , then ran the engine for a couple of seconds to push a litre of oil out, stopped the engine & replaced a litre. This was carried out 5 times, or untill the oil is clear. This method greatly reduces the new oil mixing with the old oil.
Overall perfect video 👌 The quality is so high that the first oil draining looks like a string one small thing I picked up on. 4 quarts is technically only 3,78 liters 😅
On my first attempt to change the transmission fluid. My small drain plug was not the standard , t30 too small and t40 too large. I have three Torx driver sets (SnapOn, Gearwrench and Duralast) but none included a t35. If you don’t own a t35 might be a good idea to buy one.
If I may ramble, this takes me back to when my friend and I tried doing this on his 2009 IS350 and my P2 T5 last year. When it was time to fill the torque converter with new fluid, I drew the short straw and laid under the car pumping fluid into the fill plug on his IS while we had the level check in it (same design as here) until bright red came out into the pan we had underneath. Then we let it get to temp and did a final check. He was inside shifting gears after primary fill because he's obsessive about his car. So far everything is fine, but Ionder if that could be done here. I just don't want to get us all in trouble. 😂
For my 2019 XC40 I removed approx. 2.5-L of Tx fluid from a cold Tx and engine. I did not use a scan tool to monitor fluid level at the end. I did what the video instructed: drained first, then added 4-qt, restarted engine and rowed the gears (didn't run long enough to get up to temp), then drained exactly the 4-qt I put in during the 1st refill. Lastly, I measured exactly the same amount I removed when I first drained it (2.5-L) and refilled with exactly that at the last fill.
I do exactly the same. It works fine as long as the current fluid was set at the factory. The key is not to let it warm up too much so the volume does not change.
It seems to be running just fine. Been quite some time since I did. But you're right this will work as long as temp during the drain is the same temp as the fluid I put in and we presume the fluid level in the Tx was correct from the factory to begin with. So far so good though.
The shops and dealers in my area have a different (and better in my opinion) method. They remove the lines and set up an empty bucket for the new fluid and the supply line sucks in fresh fluid from a large container. They usually bill me for 12qts. Then they just start the engine and let the pump cycle out all the old fluid. When the fluid coming out turns new, they shut the car off, put all the lines back, reset the fluid counters, and set the level.
Perfect tutorial. That perfect choice and avoid flush transmission is pressure to get out dirty cause damage to gearbox. Better drain and fill diluted instead of flush machine. Scotty Kilmer REV UP! :)

Everyone: DO NOT attempt to bypass reading the temperature using a scan tool. It needs to be at the temperature range mentioned so that final level is correct. Do not risk over or worse, under filling your transmission by using one of those “good enough” methods such as using a laser thermometer or whatever else you come up with
Fluid expands when heated and contracts when allowed to cool down. Why not just measure the drained old fluid and allow to cool down at room temperature. When done, that is the right level of the new fluid to fill. It seemed that the process shown here may not be necessary... What do you think???
@@bioret No has tried the 'cooling' approach yet. Unless you have a fluid leak on your transmission 'vault', the drained fluid should be the right volume to replace. This is a science fact. I still wonder why no one has thought of this...
@@tomgeronimo3090 I’ve seen it mentioned in ATF drain and fill forums for other cars. I’m not totally opposed to it. That said for most cars the ATF temperature can be read by a cheap OBD2 reader so why not do it the right way (not sure if the p3 Volvos show it on the cheap OBD2 readers or VIDA & DICE are needed) My original post is a tip based on experience when doing a friend’s Hyundai after following a “guide” which okayed a temperature gun we ended up with much less fluid that we should have replaced.
@@tomgeronimo3090 I have let the car cool overnight, drained, measured and filled with exactly the same volume of fluid (at the same temperature as the drained fluid). I do this every 30K miles and have had no issues.
Very good Job on the Video, I have a question for the 2012 XC70 AWD 3.2 I6 engine with 6 speed automatic, is the same exact procedure or is there a difference? Thank you in Advance
Great tutorial love the way u explain everything so well . I have a 2012xc90 2.4 d5 I take it there is no filter to be changed I've done a bit of research and it doesn't seem like there is thanks in advance
Excellent video. Thank you for posting. It looks straightforward enough apart from the oil temperature and the car needing to be level so front ramps or jacking front up will not work, and unfortunately, i dont have access to a hydraulic ramp... I guess ill have to take it to Volvo for this job $$$$ 😬
Tip - when removing air intake, plastic ages and becomes less flexible warm the joint with a hair dryer the plastic becomes more flexible to work makes easy to remove
Hi there love your videos I've just done the gear oil change like u have shown on 2012 xc90 2.4 d5 12ltrs of oil so first drain then fill drain then fill drain then final fill is it normal for 1250ml to come back out with engine running at 51 plus degrees tha k you look forward to your reply . Scared to drive it incase not enough oil in box 😮
Hi, great video. I just bought an 2012 XC70 with same box. Car have 105000 miles on the clock and the gearbox had fluid flush at 60000. I going to replace the oil and flush the box again soon. I noticed, when I do three point turn and shift from R to D the box kinda jerks littlebit sometimes, I was wondering if its normal. The box it self shifting nice and smooth. Thx Rob
Hi. Great video!! I did loved it and learn a lot from it. !! I was only wondering if you can tell me the measuremwnt of the inner side of the large plug, just out of curiosity. Thanks!!
Great video - thanks for creating and posting! I just completed my first transmission service (at 53000 miles) and it really needed doing. The fluid was very brown though thankfully didn't smell burned. It now looks almost fresh. One difference with my 2017 V60: I only got 2.8L out on the initial drain. It was not low on fluid (I got 1L out through the small level-setting plug) and the car was level. So I just used 3L instead of 4L per fill ... other than that, everything looked exactly like the video. Really curious as to whether other people are seeing a smaller quantity of fluid.
@@swesleyc7 Another quick update: treated myself to a new diagnostic computer (Autel MaxiCOM MK808S) and did the transmission adaptation. It did actually improve the shift quality and got rid of an annoyance I've had ever since the car was new (pulling away from a stop, especially a *very* brief stop, felt like the transmission was totally disconnected and made it difficult to pull away smoothly - that's now gone). Strongly recommend doing the adaptation after fluid service.
One question: If you control in the last step the level...the motor is running..OK . but must the automatic stand at neutral/ park or in drive/ backwarts ?
An adaption just resets the transmission computer to new fluid. The transmission is "smart" and has a program that will adjust shift points, calculate shift times, etc to maximize smoothness and minimize wear as the fluid gets old. Changing the fluid? Reset the adaptions.
Nice video! Maybe you guys know, so it could help me I live abroad and love DIYing my Volvo but it’s a model never sold in the US A google search brought me my V40 has the very same T5 2.0 engine with 8-speed Aisin So my question is Is the procedure likely to be the same?
Great video! Thanks! Any suggestions for the "An electronic TCM reset is highly recommended after the oil change, especially if it has been a while since the last service?" Something that has to be done at the dealer?
Great video! I was trying to T55 to loose up the screw for the transmission oil box but it appears the screw was frozen- any thing that can help to loose it up?
What i don't understand is that you went through all the effort with double oil change etcetera but didn't change the transmission oil filter as recommended by the manufacturer
Quick question lads, i just bought a 2007 s60r with the tf80sc, it has 237k miles and im unsure if the trans oil was ever flushed. It seems the valve solanoid for the trans is going bad due to shift flares, hard shifts, etc. Is it bad to flush all of it now without replacing the valve solanoid first? Or will flushing it remove the gunk that also is holding those solenoids together to allow engagements?
Hey Grat Video. Quick one,,, why there is oil coming out (05:30) from the level plug.. since the same plug is used afterwards to set maximum level..when no oil is no more dripping ??
Ok, I have a question.....back when I drove Lincoln Town Cars, it was easy to change trans fluid in them by disconnecting one hose from a metal pipe that went up to the trans cooler, stick a piece of hose on that pipe and put both hoses down into a gallon jug, start the car and let it pump until bubbles were seen in the hose. Stop the car and add that exact amount of new fluid back into the trans and repeat until it was all bright red new fluid. Can't disconnect a hose on this car, but would it hurt anything to open the drain plug, let it drain, start the car and let another couple of litres drain out, stop car, replace plug and add exact amount of new fluid back? Would it hurt the pump or lose prime? It would sure make things easier.
This process works in the 2003 xc70 ? I'm 3rd owner and no one has done any maintenance on the car it has 220000 miles on it im afraid I may be to late and have other issues but I'm starting with maintenance stuff before I dig deep Into a rebuilt Transmission so the D&R process I'm doing ty can a person put in a additive in the Trans fluid to help an older high millage transmission ?
Hello! Many thanks! for this valuable Video. I have a Volvo s60 Diesel. D3 Year model 2018. Automatic Gearbox. It's called the TF-71SC. Do you do the same way as you do in this Video, when you change the gearbox oil on my car? Thanks! From Tommy Bertilsson from Sweden
Question. Some amount of fluid came out of the box when you first removed the level plug. But you only put back the leveled amount of fluid back in. Doesn't that mean you put less than you drain?
I’m looking at buying a 2010 XC90 in the UK. Rather than pay to have a shop replace the fluid, I’d rather buy a scan tool and the service parts and do it myself. It probably won’t be much more to do this than to pay to have the service done, and then Ive got the scan tool to keep. Will the Autel scan tools display the fluid temperature on a 2010 vehicle?
Hello again wee question have u ever heard of doing an change of oil on an xc90 with 119k miles that has maybe never had a great oil change before to cause issues after doing the 2 flushes and fill . Also is it important to do a TCM update
This is rather common - old oil being replaced by too much clean oil has been known to reveal problems (not technically cause them - the problem was already there, but the dirty oil was hiding it). For this reason I prefer a simpler procedure: drain, measure what came out, put that much new back in, call it a day. Do it every other oil change.
Hi, Do you have to reset a counter in the onboard computer to tell that you changed the gearbox oil ? Can this be done with the Maxicheck MX808 ? I have read this in the VIDA tool. It is to avoid later-on a DTC (in case of heavy load). Regards
Nice video! I have no idea why I didn't subscribe consider I watched a lot of your guys videos and bought stuff from your website as well. Just subed! Also any plan to do a DIY video on a 2018 XC90's rear haldex diff oil change?
Why there is such an excessive fluid amount when the T40 plug is undone for the first time? It should have been filled in up to the plug level, and it seems that it has been overfilled? Where is that extra fluid coming from? It is because the level is set when the car is running and the fluid is circulating somewhere in a gearbox? Strange procedure I would say... Another question - is there a filter you need to change as well? Thanks!
The procedure I saw and did on mine was a real pain. Disconnect the return hose from the trans cooler into the trans. Use a peice of hose to extend that hose into a container you can see the fluid level in. Put a hose with a funnel attached to the tube where the return hose went into the transmission. Start the engine and run it until 2 quarts have been pumped into the container. Shut engine off an pour 2 quarts of fluid into the funnel going into the trans. Repeat. Shift through the gears as you are repeating. I did I think I did 12 quarts with the procedure.
The dealership flushed my transmission fluid at 58,000 miles. I’m told there was an extra 12 ounces. Will that hurt my 2017 VOLVO XC60 if there’s 12 extra ounces of transmission fluid?
Check out the kit used in this video here: bit.ly/2JQ51Zt

That said for most cars the ATF temperature can be read by a cheap OBD2 reader so why not do it the right way (not sure if the p3 Volvos show it on the cheap OBD2 readers or VIDA & DICE are needed)
My original post is a tip based on experience when doing a friend’s Hyundai after following a “guide” which okayed a temperature gun we ended up with much less fluid that we should have replaced.
Hi Joe, the idea will be similar!
Thanks for the video! Just ordered the refill kit from you guys and with the video it should be easy peasy.
Awesome! Thank you!
this video helped to replace transmission oil in Mazda CX-9 2012 same transmission and procedure..well done
Glad we could help!
Great video! I'm doing the oil change on Monday. Just one question: shouldn't the TCM be updated after the oil change?
I heard that too, But one needs the Vida-Dice system to reset the parameters.
Great tutorial love the way u explain everything so well . I have a 2012xc90 2.4 d5 I take it there is no filter to be changed I've done a bit of research and it doesn't seem like there is thanks in advance
no Doug the filter is inside the box
@@Bob-nu3xe great thanks so I take it u leave it alone
Really would love to see a video for transmission flushes manual gearbox P1 V50 2.4 engine.
😥
Thanks for video. I heard I might need a filter change as well though, which filter would that be?
very helpful & clear. This Aisin transmission is used in lots of other makes too e.g. Toyota & BMW
Best repair video I have seen. Very clear and precise. Do you have one for the valve body replacement?
Thank you! Not at the moment, but something we plan to do in the future!
Please do a video on how to change the timming belt. Thank you
Thanks for the video, I was getting ready to change the fluid in our 2013 XC90.
No problem Aaron hope this helped!
Tip - when removing air intake, plastic ages and becomes less flexible warm the joint with a hair dryer the plastic becomes more flexible to work makes easy to remove
Great video! Anyone know why the small plug was removed when trying drain the transmission? Don’t just remove the big plug will do the job?
I’m sure glad that Volvo has made changing tranny fluid so complex and expensive. otherwise you wouldn’t think you were doing it on a Volvo.
🤣
Very useful videos! Thanks a lot! But where can i get the new o-ring for plug?
Hi there love your videos I've just done the gear oil change like u have shown on 2012 xc90 2.4 d5 12ltrs of oil so first drain then fill drain then fill drain then final fill is it normal for 1250ml to come back out with engine running at 51 plus degrees tha k you look forward to your reply . Scared to drive it incase not enough oil in box 😮
wow, this guy is awesome! You guys rock thank you, this is why I buy from you guys and no one else.
Brilliant video I'm going to do my 2007 xc70 2.4d5 would it be like this as my car doesn't have a atf dip stick
Thx Rob
Where does one get the giant measuring cup that trans fluid first drained into?
At a restaurant shop , those are mostly used for cooking
Did you use the Maxicheck 808 scan tool? What did you use to check temp and reset the TCM?
@@swesleyc7 No - I have an "iCarSoft CR Pro" which I used for the temperature reading. I didn't attempt to do a TCM reset.
I need one of those clear pitchers! Way easier than draining it into an old oil jug.
And far more satisfying 😅
@@fcpeuro just ordered fluids from you guys and a container from Amazon. I'm ready to go now!
Hi Adam what oil do I use in my af40 gearbox, great content 👍👍
One question: If you control in the last step the level...the motor is running..OK . but must the automatic stand at neutral/ park or in drive/ backwarts ?
Would you suggest doing an 'adaption' after changing the oil? And what exactly does an adaption do?
An adaption just resets the transmission computer to new fluid. The transmission is "smart" and has a program that will adjust shift points, calculate shift times, etc to maximize smoothness and minimize wear as the fluid gets old. Changing the fluid? Reset the adaptions.
I'm afraid to ask the dealer how much they would charge to reset the adaptations.

A google search brought me my V40 has the very same T5 2.0 engine with 8-speed Aisin

Is the procedure likely to be the same?

@@fcpeuro can you do the same for 1999-2006 S80?
Great video! Thanks! Any suggestions for the "An electronic TCM reset is highly recommended after the oil change, especially if it has been a while since the last service?" Something that has to be done at the dealer?
Yes is highly recomended, otherwise the gearbox will have a "seize" at every gear change....
Awesome vid, what can I do if my scanner cannot show the trans fluid temp? as you said it should be around 50C on the final drain...
It's an internal filter unfortunately.
I’m confused why did he put 4 quarts back in for the final fill when only 3.25 came out the first time?
The exess is drained out when setting the level.
Adam- Crazy there is not a filter to change on the transmission. 2018 V60 FWD
An interesting and educative video. Good one
Awesome video demonstration. Thank you!
You are welcome, Martin!
Amazingly detailed video, Thank you... subscribing now!!
Amazing video
Any chance you can do serpentine belt and tensioner replacement video for 2015 s60 b4204t11 engine and also for timing kit replacement?
Btw I’ve noticed you’ve put 8 liters of transmission oil, isn’t it should be 6.6 liter?
Yes more P3 please
Great video I have an 06. Xc70. 6 speed auto. Is it the same procedure

A REVIEW? Are you kidding?
Question.
Some amount of fluid came out of the box when you first removed the level plug. But you only put back the leveled amount of fluid back in. Doesn't that mean you put less than you drain?
I have 2013/2014 XC90, first gen. Do you need to reset the transmission fluid counter using Volvo DiCE for the 2nd gen?
Great video! Is the procedure the same for a 2008 xc90 3.2 liter?
Good job my friend from Liverpool 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Nice video! What is the best oil change interval for TG-81SC? I have volvo v60 2019.
Your service manual says. My 2019 XC40 T5 says to do so at 50k
Is this the same for a 2019 S60??
what a great video you make it look very easy !
Hi, Do you have to reset a counter in the onboard computer to tell that you changed the gearbox oil ?
Can this be done with the Maxicheck MX808 ?
I have read this in the VIDA tool. It is to avoid later-on a DTC (in case of heavy load).
Regards

How many liters of oil you drained and refilled? I have a s40 2.4 I 2004 model.
Thanks!
No filter to be done on this one! Completely normal for fluid to come out since it is off and not at operating temp, being pumped through the system.
Hi, do you recommend to change xc40 2020 auto transmission fluid?
Vill you possibly also do the same procedure for Aisin AW55 transmission on p1 volvo please?
