  • This is the Ferrari 488 Pista! Ferrari's latest light weight, driver focused, mid-engined supercar developed for the track! The Ferrari 488 Pista effectively has the engine from Ferrari's 488 Challenge car, resulting in an increased power output of of 710hp vs the 488 GTB and a kerb weight of just 1385kg, 90kg less than the 488. All of this results in a 0-62mph time of just 2.9 seconds!
    Numbers are one thing however, in this video I discover just what the turbo generation of track focused Ferrari's is all about!

    If not for EU regulation regarding the car engine, I think ferrari will continue making a naturally aspirated engine.
    This is just my opinion

      100%

    • @flyingphoenix113
      @flyingphoenix113 5 лет назад +34

      I'm not so convinced. Shortly after the 458 Speciale came out, Ferrari engineers said that the naturally-aspirated, flat-plane crank V8 was at a dead end (at least for the time being). As their prototype engine began to reach 5 liters, the secondary imbalances became too intense, and the engine ran incredibly poorly. Hence, they said, unless they go to a V10 (which is more Lamborghini's territory), turbocharging was the only way forward in terms of power since they couldn't increase displacement.
      **To answer this critique before it arises, yes, I'm aware the Ford Voodoo is 5.2l and has a flat-plane crank. I can also say, having been in a GT350R just last week, that the engine runs incredibly poorly and that they have A LOT of problems (the one I was in had the air conditioning compressor go out THAT DAY, and it had less than 4500 miles on the clock). The Voodoo also had to be detuned because of its vibrations and, consequently, makes no where near as much HP/L as did recent Ferrari NA V8s.

    • @Slapbladder
      @Slapbladder 5 лет назад +6

      What are you talking about lol The Mercedes-AMG M156 6.2-liter V8 from the SLS AMG featured a cross-plane crank. Even Koenigsegg Jesko has moved to a 5lt flat plane crank....I am pretty sure that's slightly more highly strung that a low reving yank unit....

    • @RawkustvOfficial
      @RawkustvOfficial 5 лет назад

      MAxx MAxx absolutely right about that, big shame indeed.

    • @flyingphoenix113
      @flyingphoenix113 5 лет назад +10

      @@Slapbladder FLAT-PLANE being the main feature of my comment. The Mercedes M156 (the engine in the SLS) has balance shafts on the crank like all Cross-Plane engines in order to smooth out secondary imbalances. The Jesko engine, like the upcoming project 1 Mercedes, won't be designed to go many miles before a rebuild. As long as the engine idles and makes the power, I'm sure Christian doesn't care if you have to rebuild it every 3,000 miles (because, realistically, Koenigseggs don't get that many miles put on them anyway). Ferraris, by comparison, HAVE to have longevity, even if the first owner doesn't put that many miles on the engine. That's the difference.

    • @projectr2451
      @projectr2451 5 лет назад

      James Crain
      I would’ve thought the Veyron 16.4 wins. However, there’s a video where the 488 Pista does 10.1 secs at 141mph. The Veyron 16.4 has done 10.1 secs at a higher trap speed. Now why that is interesting is because the 488 Pista has a slower claimed 0-200km/h time than the Veyron 16.4. The Veyron 16.4 does it in 7.3 secs.
      I’ve seen a video of a prototype Pista doing 6.9 secs but that was downhill, and that would match the time that the LaFerrari does it in. I highly doubt the 488 Pista is as quick as the LaFerrari.

    Million dollar question : would you take this over a 458 speciale?

    great video James as always. Just to correct you, the ordinary 488 does rev to 8k. I know because I have a 488 spider. Look it up.

    The beeps you hear is a preset speed warning. Probably set at 80 mph I’d guess but it’s customizable.

    I can't wait to see how it stacks up against the 720S on track, Matt Farah just did a track session in a 720S and it is epic.

    Peep peep peep. For 300 thousand dollars I would get insane of those beeps every time.
