Mike Richards had well documented substance abuse problems. David Booth got KO’d in 09-10 with a dirty hit and suffered from concussion problems throughout his career. There’s more to the analysis of these players than just stats. There’s reasons why they went bad.
+OhNyquist should at least highlight the reason why they fell off though.. "WHAT HAPPENED?" is shown as the title on the video.. so that should be your focus.
+OhNyquist should at least highlight the reason why they fell off though.. "WHAT HAPPENED?" is shown as the title on the video.. so that should be your focus.
Marmis no it isn't. You know there are other players than amazing goal scorers who score like 40 times a season. There are also the the good players that score 20 times a season. Not every player is expected to be all star goal scorers.
except that this is a video about players who had those expectations. Expecting to be a solid 80 points/40 goals player, turns out to be 40points/20 goals player. Who would you rather get with 7 million dollars per year against the cap?
OhNyquist - but you use the word "terrible", which implies that their quality of play grew progressively worse over time. Hockey is more than stats, and it seems clear from the video that that's all you care about. Most of these guys were still good players, despite not showing up on the scoresheet. With the exception of Richards, who sucked his last year in Philly and had virtually nothing to do with the Kings winning the Cup, people are going to be able to argue that most of these guys were still decent throughout their careers.
OhNyquist I know if I made a scripted video I'd do multiple takes if I stumbled over my words or said the wrong number and corrected myself and I wouldn't be condescending to people who leave comments (negative as they may be). I have no problem with your content like those above me, but if you want to do this as a means of income there are basic professional standards across all entrepreneur friendly platforms, and if you ironed them out you'd get way more views and subs 👍🏻
Nice in depth video? And you think this was a good video? Like everyone said, you just stated stats. This is a horrible video. I saw another video about the "best prospect no one is talking about", lots of people are talking about him you fucking idiot,
the thing is this kind of channel don't care about quality, so when a lot of people are arguing in comments, it just makes more views to this click bait thing.
Clarkson was a grinder from the beginning. Then, he just found an amazing scoring touch for a couple years. He tried to maintain it, but I just don't think he ever really had the skill to produce those kinds of points when it was expected of him. I think he just caught a bunch of guys off guard for a little while.
I think the common thread between these players is that the league started to get a lot faster around the 2011/12 season. These players werent known for their speed and as the league got faster, they fell further behind. Just my opinion.
Semin, Eric Staal, and Jiri Tlusty made a great first line for Carolina in the 48 game season. Unfortunately, Eric and Alex both got hurt in the off-season and could not duplicate that success.
Good attempt, bud. My constructive criticism, is to perhaps tighten up your script. It sounds like you're rushing to get all your words out. Less words = less rushing. Perhaps consider a graphics slide, that provides all the stats you're highlighting. Also, be careful not to repeat certain catchphrases. Cheers.
Good video concept, but you got really repetitive with "the future looked bright", "we never will know what could've been", etc. You could also use some more silence in between the points you make and slow down. The constant fast talking is overwhelming to listen to.
It is a shame Richards went downhill so fast, though he still managed a respectable career. He did win an OHL championship, Memorial Cup, World Junior Championship, Olympic Gold, Calder Cup, and two Stanley Cups. He just missed winning the Selke in 2008 (Datsyuk won 945 votes to 942) and holds two NHL records: most career 3-on-5 goals (three) and is the only player to play in two series in which his team rallied from a 3-0 deficit. Definitely could have had more, but still managed a better career than most.
Exactly same story as Gomez, and arguably Eric Staal-when you go on a run of winning and winning and winning, it gets harder and harder to self-motivate.
Considering Semin played with a wrist injury in 2013-14 and was the most consistent forward in terms of work ethic, I called that a really good season.
Nice man I like the vid! Maybe just highlight their rookie year, career high and career low/final season for stats for your next one? Just some food for thought!
Russian? Really? How about an injured rist for a guy with a main tool being a wicked wrist shot? Could that have played a part - oh no, we all know it's aĺl because the dude is russian, that's the sole reason!
With Cheechoo, look at the other player involved in most of his goals in the 2005-06 season... Thornton came in red-hot with something to prove, and there's no other reason Cheechoo had such a massive spike in goals during that season.
I’ve watched a couple of your videos and your analysis of players as well as situations appears to be consistently sub-par. Don’t know what to tell ya man.
that was 17 goals in the lockout shortened year, he played with Taylor Hall that year and looked like he had promise but was worse and worse every year after that.
17 goals in a 48 game lockout season as a rookie is insanely good. Dallas Eakins ruined all of those young stars. Hall never hit his full potential till now, Eberle never hit 70pts ever again, Schultz only broke out in pittsburgh, and Nugent-Hopkins never became the Toews or Datsyuk level center they thought he’d be.
Obviously Cheechoo fell off pretty hard but it’s amazing he even played professional hockey. He grew up on a Cree First Nation on an island in the James Bay and would have been a hunter and trapper for the Cree if he hadn’t been discovered by ted Nolan
Thank you for this video, OhNyquist. It was really fun to look back! I made the count and prior to Thornton's trade, Cheechoo had: 24 games: 7 goals/8 assists (15 points) after Thornton's arrival: 58 games: 49 goals/29 assists (78 points) Thornton had the very best season of his career that year and this obviously had an impact on Cheechoo. Anyone knows exactly what happened?
Why didn't you mention Cheechoos injuries or that he was a 3time khl Allstar. 2013, 2014 and 2017. Please do the research for better quality videos. Have a nice day.
Hey man why don’t u make a timeline video of cheechoos career? I don’t talk about everything because I don’t want my videos to be to long. But I’m sure you could make a very awesome quality video describing everything that happened in his career!
gaah23 I'm gonna guess that it's because this is a "NHL stars who dropped off quickly" video and not a "NHL stars who dropped off quickly but then went to other, lesser leagues where they did well" video.
You say you don't want your videos to be too long yet you repeat the same exact points several times in short spans of time... no mentions of injuries, off ice issues plus the lack of simple graphics to show the numbers makes this pretty hard to watch.
The pressure of being a leader was too much for him in T.O. Kind of like Phil Kessel. He was never going to be the pure (super-star) goal scorer. He fits the role of a "side-kick" much better... The only problem with him now is, the Pens are paying 8 million a year, for a "side-kick!" LOL
markus naslund should be on this list. he went from being one of the most dynamic shooter/skater in the nhl for a few seasons to dropping off horribly after his injuries and playoff failures.
Osgood and Hextall played in like 20 fewer games and played for the top team from each conference, Carey was by far much more impressive than what those two did on stacked teams.
Carey interestingly is my favorite Capital player of all-time. I fell in love with the team when he was our starting goaltender. Loved his Pirate and brick wall mask. I also own his 1994-1995 game worn road red jersey, Maska CCM size 54. His unfortunate playoff demise gave way to Kolzig stepping in and helping us to our first Stanley Cup Finals appearance 20 years ago. While Carey never fully panned out as old school Caps fans had hoped, I remember him fondly.
It turned out that Cheechoo had a shitload of lingering concussion problems that he kept under the table when he was playing that didn’t really come to light until after he retired. That’s why he dropped off so hard. Pretty sad really.
Thomas Vanek with the Sabres it looked like Buffalo had a legit pure scoring threat, after the Sabres then playing for the Islanders, Habs, Wild, Red Wings and Panthers he just fizzled out offensively and became forgotten.
Assuming he wouldn't have the ability to put up numbers simply because of being a two way forward is stupid. He showed he had high offensive abilities when he put up back to back point per game seasons with 28 goals and 30 goals in 07-08 and 08-09, but wasn't able to keep that pace.
Cheechoo was only so good because of Joe Thorton. Gotta remember Thorton put up 92 points in 58 games when traded to the sharks the year Cheechoo scored 56 goals. And Thorton is one of the best playmakers ever. At that point in thorton's career a minor league player would have scored 30 goals on his line.
How is 28 goals, 55 points in 65 games a bad season? He was on pace for 30 plus goals. I know he went down after that. But a 40 goal season is like a one-time thing for most guys.
CheeChoo is the only one whose downfall is explicable. The year he potted 50 he had Joe Thornton (who had something to prove himself after being dumped by the Bruins) feeding him gimmee passes.
Probably should mention the monster hits booth took that would ruin anyones career very hard to come back from that not only does it affect you physically but very much affects the mental side of the game
I see some comments that argue you should go deeper than just stating the stats and lamenting the careers. I agree with those. As it is, this video doesn't really offer much. It only hilights four players based on stats only. If that is what you want to do, go for it. However, I'd recommend you put the stats in writing on the video as that is a superior way to demonstrate what you're talking about. And if you ever feel like it, maybe provide some background and possible reasons for the downward spiralling careers. I think that would enhance these kind of videos a lot. The lenght of the video itself doesn't have to be extented that much if you'd have to stats on screen, but, I fear it would require much more time from you to investigate the players' careers.
Semin got complacent when he signed more than a one year deal. All of his best seasons were contract years. Carolina ruined his career by signing him to a long contract.
How did that ruin his career? It isn't smart business to keep a player who performs on 1 year deals. If your stats slip because, as you're suggesting, the player knows he isn't fighting for a new contract - that's the player's fault. Not the team's fault. Show you earned the contract you got, not get content with underperforming.
The individual player is responsible for pushing himself, but how much could each players performance be attributed the fact that, they play in the worlds toughest hockey league?
Don't suppose the Richards hit on Booth had anything to do with him not producing at the same rate? I say yes. It would be nice to have a little bit more developed content than just listing stats. But it's still cool to look back and see where some of these players are now. Can't wait to see McDavid on thjs list. Lol
Zach Parise(isnt terrible, but his contract is disgusting), Milan Lucic, Simone Gagne, Ryan Miller(ok career), Danny Heatley, Sergei Samsanov, Christian Ehroff, Jimmy Hayes(had 2 decent seasons), Matt Belesky(had 1 good year, got paid & sucks) & pretty soon Rick Nash will probably be on the same page!
Parise has battled injuries the past few of seasons, Rick Nash is just on the decline for an older player, and Ryan Miller is just old and his stats were actually pretty consistently good for having played on some not-so-good teams.
I’m hoping he will be good! Cause we literally have no young defence or defence prospects, Jensen and oullet aren’t cutting it . But he looked great in the games he played this year! I think he will be solid
OhNyquist I wouldn't say that we have NO prospects - instead we don't have bona fide Top 2 D level potential on the blue line. However, young defensemen we got aplenty: Hronek, Hicketts, Cholowski, Saarijärvi, Sulak. With good luck, hopefully three of those guys prove to be NHL ready, even good enough to be solid centerpieces for the Red Wings back-end.
Being a Blackhawks fan stated first I will say I loved Mike Richards. Nasty ball of hate to play against 2 way center who at his size shouldn't of held up w/ the physical play and prolong his career. Is why he wasn't first overall eh? W/ that talent,. he was a born leader w/ Kitchener and won a Memorial cup his draft year, what held him to late to mid first round was his size. They knew that the way he played he was not going to be long for the league. Then when injuries piled up he needed something for the pain. He was not a disappointment. Both LA cup teams and finals w/ Flyers they both would tell you none of that happens w/out him.
just throwing out some names which could make for a part 2 maybe? Tomas Fleishmann, Dany Heatley, Sean Bergenheim, Ville Leino, Mikhail Grabovski and as a wild card, Shea Weber(?).
Ville Leino was a one hit wonder in the playoffs and then rode the success of that playoff run with the Flyers to one good season. 2 goals 2 assists in 13 regular season games in 09-10 then 7 goals and 14 assists in 19 playoff games. He had a decent 2011 season but was never really that good.
Darryl Sutter stuck Richards on the fourth Line where he got hardly any minutes playing with Jordan Nolan when he could have been on the first line with Kopitar and learned a new position OR ANYTHING,.. and way too early on,..
Semin had all world skill... it was said he was as talented as Sid.... his heart just wasn’t in the NHL like that, especially after a few playoff losses.
Semin was lazy. You ever see him shirtless? Definitely not in shape. Last I heard about a year ago he went back to college to get an engineering degree. I was so excited about him when he first showed up in Washington. He just didn't have the drive to push himself to excel at that level and got by on natural talent.
“in the oh nine - oh ten season.”
09-010

Project305miami I’m aware, I don’t want my videos to be half hour long so I don’t document every event throughout they’re careers
*acts like a 20 goal year is bad*
Faze Ex it is if the player is expected to score much more
When did mediocrity become "good"....20 goal career scorer is a good 3rd maybe 2nd liner
Marmis no it isn't. You know there are other players than amazing goal scorers who score like 40 times a season. There are also the the good players that score 20 times a season. Not every player is expected to be all star goal scorers.

2nd round pick 40 goal scorer ???? ok sure, most of these players he mentions had expectations only after having a good season.
All of these guys had careers that the rest of us can only dream about.
Yep
So true
your analysis is actually just the stats book
OhNyquist - but you use the word "terrible", which implies that their quality of play grew progressively worse over time. yeah sometimes in this video you say that the player got terrible, when he has 5 pts less than the year before...
OhNyquist I know if I made a scripted video I'd do multiple takes if I stumbled over my words or said the wrong number and corrected myself and I wouldn't be condescending to people who leave comments (negative as they may be). David Clarkson, he scored 30 goals in the 2011-12 season and became a grinder from there.
Coke head
He was a grinder always he was exploded and scored 30 playing with some solid players
Clarkson was a grinder from the beginning. Then, he just found an amazing scoring touch for a couple years. Defining becoming a average guy in the NHL as "TERRIBLE" shows how little you understand of hockey
Cody Hodgson how could forget that guy. 10th overall pick. Guy doesn't even play in the NHL now.
coke head
he was so promising
ended up being diagnosed with Malignant Hyperthermia
doctors told him he had to retire
Yea he basically fell off the face of the earth once he got traded to Buffalo.
Thorin Jordan - Interesting. Thanks for that info. A pretty rare illness.
I thought of Hodgsontoo, but Gaborik came to mind.
Failed to mention that injuries and drug problems (Richards) caused problems for these guys
Semin, Eric Staal, and Jiri Tlusty made a great first line for Carolina in the 48 game season.
Unfortunately, Eric and Alex both got hurt in the off-season and could not duplicate that success.
CaptainJack88 Eric staal is still good
All of these people are the top free agents in NHL 17
Good attempt, bud. My constructive criticism, is to perhaps tighten up your script. It sounds like you're rushing to get all your words out. Less words = less rushing. Perhaps consider a graphics slide, that provides all the stats you're highlighting. Also, be careful not to repeat certain catchphrases. Cheers.
APisceanSlant nigga u got 3 subs
@@voltagex5799 doesn’t make it any less valid. Some of this applies to him today, while he followed some of it too and became a way better RUclipsr
"Richards took his talents to LA" as if he had a choice in the matter lol
Good video concept, but you got really repetitive with "the future looked bright", "we never will know what could've been", etc. You could also use some more silence in between the points you make and slow down. The constant fast talking is overwhelming to listen to.
Nakamura Hiroshima Honda Civic Miyamoto OwO agree. This is a chore to listen to. "played in 72 games played" etc. Not great
Yeah, this guy's video concepts are good, but the execution needs work.
It is a shame Richards went downhill so fast, though he still managed a respectable career. Similar story to Staal and Gomez? They had substance abuse problems?
Considering Semin played with a wrist injury in 2013-14 and was the most consistent forward in terms of work ethic, I called that a really good season.
Nice man I like the vid! Maybe just highlight their rookie year, career high and career low/final season for stats for your next one? Just some food for thought!
Semin is the worst, he could've been so good but was a lazy bastard and never fulfilled his potential
1. Drugs

3. Russian
4. Drugs
Russian? Really? How about an injured rist for a guy with a main tool being a wicked wrist shot? Could that have played a part - oh no, we all know it's aĺl because the dude is russian, that's the sole reason!
No Body Exactly thank you!
Cody Erdmann lol Russian
No Body nah it’s because he’s Russian
I can read out his stats on my own...
With Cheechoo, look at the other player involved in most of his goals in the 2005-06 season...
Thornton came in red-hot with something to prove, and there's no other reason Cheechoo had such a massive spike in goals during that season.
I'm really enjoying these topics, can't find anything like this on any other channel! Great work bro
Thanks a lot man! Great to hear:)
I’ve watched a couple of your videos and your analysis of players as well as situations appears to be consistently sub-par. Don’t know what to tell ya man.
It's because he only talks about statistics which anyone can literally look up and read themselves.
I havent heard about semin in awhile
Gene Meh i know right. last time i heard his name i was around 14-15 years old i'm 23 now lol
Andy MacDonald seems a bit exaggerated
Dimitros 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Went to the KHL in 2016 after being terminated from the Habs. He has now retired and went to college. His wrist injury did him in.
When all you do is spout stats its like nails to a chalkboard
Can u imagine a 1st line of Ovi, backstrom, and semin all in their prime ? Scary
Man Richards was beast for the flyers , I’ll never forget the runs they went on while he was on the team
Nail yakupov
Austin K was he ever really good 🤔😂😂
Jimmy Incrediboy haha nope, never even scored over 17 goals!
that was 17 goals in the lockout shortened year, he played with Taylor Hall that year and looked like he had promise but was worse and worse every year after that.
He never put up points on like 3 or 4 different teams for a first overall pick
17 goals in a 48 game lockout season as a rookie is insanely good. Dallas Eakins ruined all of those young stars. The semin story makes me so sad as a caps fan, especially since that hat trick around 7:00 I was at that game against the thrashers
As a Canes fan, he became one of my favorites very quickly, and his falloff in 2015 was one of the hardest things to watch.
Thank you for this video, OhNyquist. It was really fun to look back!
I made the count and prior to Thornton's trade, Cheechoo had:
24 games: 7 goals/8 assists (15 points)
after Thornton's arrival:
58 games: 49 goals/29 assists (78 points)
Thornton had the very best season of his career that year and this obviously had an impact on Cheechoo.
Anyone knows exactly what happened?

I hope Alexander Semin Comes back to NHL and stays
Dion Phaneuf
in the old nhl dion would be a all star
The pressure of being a leader was too much for him in T.O.
Kind of like Phil Kessel. He was never going to be the pure (super-star) goal scorer. He fits the role of a "side-kick" much better... The only problem with him now is, the Pens are paying 8 million a year, for a "side-kick!" LOL
yeah cuz winning cups is a real problem
markus naslund should be on this list. he went from being one of the most dynamic shooter/skater in the nhl for a few seasons to dropping off horribly after his injuries and playoff failures.
Imagine if Ovechkin was the bust and not Semin
What about Dany Heatley?
Guy says. Cheechoo only had 37 goals blah blah blah..That's pretty damn stellar if I'm concerned, back than and now...Duh
You talk about booth as if he just randomly lost his skill, why don't you mention the TWO cheap concussions booth got in one season
Jim Carey, Washington Capitals, 1995-1996 Vezina Trophy winner.
I thought he was Ace Ventura...
shadowkitty56 The Net Detective
Osgood and Hextall played in like 20 fewer games and played for the top team from each conference, Carey was by far much more impressive than what those two did on stacked teams.

Assuming he wouldn't have the ability to put up numbers simply because of being a two way forward is stupid. He showed he had high offensive abilities when he put up back to back point per game seasons with 28 goals and 30 goals in 07-08 and 08-09, but wasn't able to keep that pace.
Joe B I’m not saying he didn’t have the ability to do it I’m just saying he wasn’t a purely offensive minded player
Say what you want about Mike Richard's, but that dude was accomplished as hell at every level he played at.
Semin was not that bad you have to remember he was injured all the time
I know, like I said in the vid , all of these players struggled to play all 82 games
The vid was good tho
Only thing I remember is cheechoo and Thornton coming down in 2OT on a 2 on 1 and roloson robbed him
You use the term "franchise player" way to loosely
Well remember that boothe got knocked the fuck out twice. He got a concussion, left, came back. Then got another concussion.
Pastornack had 38 goals
Vladimir Krutov got terrible as soon as the ink on his contract dried.
Scott Gomez...oy oy oy
Semin was great with the caps, i used to like him but when he was done with caps his career was over
Cheechoo was only so good because of Joe Thorton. Gotta remember Thorton put up 92 points in 58 games when traded to the sharks the year Cheechoo scored 56 goals. And Thorton is one of the best playmakers ever.

How is 28 goals, 55 points in 65 games a bad season? He was on pace for 30 plus goals. I know he went down after that. But a 40 goal season is like a one-time thing for most guys.
Cheechoo's fluke season was all thanks to management for trading for jumbo Joe Thornton
CheeChoo is the only one whose downfall is explicable. The year he potted 50 he had Joe Thornton (who had something to prove himself after being dumped by the Bruins) feeding him gimmee passes.
Richards was a beast for Philadelphia and he was destroyed by the trade to LA and he destroyed Booth. That's their careers downhill after that.
Marian Gaborik after Minny and NYR really declined offensively when playing for the Kings and Blue Jackets.
Probably should mention the monster hits booth took that would ruin anyones career very hard to come back from that not only does it affect you physically but very much affects the mental side of the game

unfair to say he got less points in the regular season in 09-10 then fail to mention the flyers went to the cup and got 23 points in 23 games........

Is it wrong that I forgot Carolina even has a team? LOL. All about the Pacific, baby 🤣😜
kuznetsov filled in nice for semin
The individual player is responsible for pushing himself, but how much could each players performance be attributed the fact that, they play in the worlds toughest hockey league?
Chechoo was a drunk. Same with Setoguchi. They tended to drink together when they played for San Jose.
Studs? C'mon bro! Your almost reading the rest right from a book.
"010 season"😂
Danny Heatley
Forbidden name I haven’t heard in years
Cheechoo would have never scored 56 goals without Thornton
David Booth was NO potential star.. and was never expected to take a team to the next level"...
Don't suppose the Richards hit on Booth had anything to do with him not producing at the same rate? I say yes.
It would be nice to have a little bit more developed content than just listing stats.
But it's still cool to look back and see where some of these players are now.
Can't wait to see McDavid on thjs list. Lol
rick dipietro
He was never a star in the NHL though.
The biggest issue for him was injuries.
I like the video, but you should consider writing a script and focus on re-writing. The grammar issues are a bit hard to take. Good luck!
I was thinking Marian Gaborik. He fell off a cliff after a 40+ goal season.
What about Sergei Samsonov? A Russian player who won the 97-98 Calder who's career was ruined because of his wrist, cut down in his prime.
..."and then he would go back to Russia, where he would come back to the NHL.."
Fuckin' word salad.
As a wings fan, how good do you think Joe Hicketts is
I’m hoping he will be good! Cause we literally have no young defence or defence prospects, Jensen and oullet aren’t cutting it . But he looked great in the games he played this year! I think he will be solid
Big hits
Why was Riley Sheahan so bad in Detroit
OhNyquist I wouldn't say that we have NO prospects - instead we don't have bona fide Top 2 D level potential on the blue line. However, young defensemen we got aplenty: Hronek, Hicketts, Cholowski, Saarijärvi, Sulak. With good luck, hopefully three of those guys prove to be NHL ready, even good enough to be solid centerpieces for the Red Wings back-end.
Peter Muller
How about the goalie Jim Carey in 1995-96, won the vezina that year but fizzed out just a few years later?
what about alexandre daigle
Darryl Sutter stuck Richards on the fourth Line where he got hardly any minutes playing with Jordan Nolan when he could have been on the first line with Kopitar and learned a new position OR ANYTHING,.. and way too early on,..
Ice time and linemates can make an average player put up numbers.
Philadelphia Flyers is consistently one of the most on unorganized organization’s in the NHL
Wayne Gretzky. That kid could've been special.
Came here hoping to see a video about why some notable hockey players took a nosedive--wound up seeing a video that only tells me their G, A, and GP.
Semin had all world skill... it was said he was as talented as Sid.... his heart just wasn’t in the NHL like that, especially after a few playoff losses.
"Points points points points points"
Oh how this channel has grown since this
You forgot every Toronto maple leafs player who ever lived
Semin was lazy. You ever see him shirtless? Definitely not in shape. Last I heard about a year ago he went back to college to get an engineering degree. I was so excited about him when he first showed up in Washington. He just didn't have the drive to push himself to excel at that level and got by on natural talent.
Not for nothing, 65 points in the national hockey league is FAR from terrible
Joe Thornton back then couldve made a gazelle on skates score 50 goals
Booth's career was greatly impacted by injuries.
Gunter V from the guy who came before him on this list.
Too many stats. going through each year is helpful but maybe a quick visual stats wise then hilights
