    My first skates I bought were the Chicago skates and I wore those things to death, but definitely helped me with my confidence on my skates and I never knew that they were considered low performance. Fast forward to today, I've ordered my first pair of Moxi Lollys and I'm super excited for their arrival.😁

    • @IagainstI.
      @IagainstI. 4 года назад +6

      The only thing I'm hesitant about in the lolly's is the ankle support. I'm a beginner, but I can see that I'm probably going to be a "hard" skater. What sort of skating do you do and do you find the lolly supportive enough?

    • @futurernfrancine4660
      @futurernfrancine4660 4 года назад +9

      @@IagainstI. I've tried the Lollys before purchasing them and I say they do give more flexibility in the ankle part which I prefer, but if you lace them all the way up you might find they are a little more supportive. I tend not to lace my skates all the way up now since I'm more comfortable. Oooo the Beach Bunnies literally feel like you have air on your feet. I love them but I didn't like the colors so I returned them, but they offer the best support and comfort. 10/10 recommend or at least try the beach bunnies to know what your foot likes, but yes the Lollys are super awesome.

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 4 года назад +8

      @@IagainstI. You NEED ankle movement when roller skating. Ankle support is a myth. One of my friends has "weak ankles" and has looked for "stiff" boots because of it. I kept telling her she didn't really need it. She now has a pair of Candi Girl (Carlin) skates as well as a pair of the Sure-Grip Sparkle skates (the speed style black glitter ones). She loves them both. I have chronic ankle instability due to many twists, sprains and strains to my ankles when younger (I could break my ankle just walking out of my house to the car) and I absolutely ADORE speed/derby style skates and have never had issues. Boot height is really up to you. DON'T let the stabilizer play a role in the skates you want. If you're comfortable in tennis shoes, you'll have no problems with the lower boot style of speed or derby boots. If you're looking for a high top just because you prefer that style, then go for it! When skating outdoors, the high top varieties do play a role, solely in keeping your ankle from getting too scraped up when you fall (and you WILL fall)...but if you only - or mainly - rink skate...get whichever skates draw your eye most. Just stay away from CHEAP skates and you'll be fine. :)

    Can you leave the names of all the skates in this video?
    I skated as a kid and really enjoyed it. I’m 30 now, with a medical condition and a lot of chronic pain. I have started skating again to keep myself active while also having fun, and it’s easy on my body. Before trying roller rink skates as an adult, I just bought a pair of the Roller Derby Rewind skates, which look like the all black pair here next to the cheap Chicago skates. I have really enjoyed them and I have convinced my friends to get pairs of their own so we can practice together around the neighbourhood.
    Your videos have been super helpful, and I’m always excited when I see a new upload. I still have a long way to go, but you have been a big part of my journey!

    Can we talk about the complex topic of cushions/bushings?

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 4 года назад +13

      Honestly, cushions aren't really that complex. Some companies only have a hardness rating (extra soft, soft, medium, hard or extra hard) while others use the durometer scale. Basically, the softer the cushion, the easier you can turn/do tricks. Harder cushions make it, well, harder to turn. Most (of course, not all) artistic and dance skaters prefer a softer cushion while speed skaters (who don't usually make a lot of turns) prefer harder ones. Though, as with wheels, it all depends on your preferred style of skating and - to a lesser degree - where you skate. Note that harder cushions will often last a little longer than softer ones, especially with all the bumps and cracks if skating outdoors, but it rally comes down to personal preference. Thankfully, unless you have a specialized plate, cushions are fairly cheap. Get a set of each hardness (or a few different ones rated on the durometer scale) to see which ones you like best for your style and needs.

    • @lawsdraws
      @lawsdraws 4 года назад

      @@MystiqueRisingSun Thank you :) I have a mix of hard(ish) and soft on my Roll-line Mistral plates, as wanted them feel to sturdy but with some flexibility for turns. I say 'complex' because I do wonder if my choice was the right one for me, and would like to know more on the topic, and which hardness/softness is best for different styles of skating (jam, derby, street, bowls etc).

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 4 года назад +2

      @@lawsdraws Yep...extra soft to medium for most skating styles....hard or extra hard for outdoor speed skating. Past that, it's really a personal preference more than anything. Just as truck adjustment and toe stop height (if you have an adjustable stop)...there really isn't a "right" or "wrong". Just a....what feels right for you. Get a few sets of hardnesses you don't have and play around until you hit that "OH! I LOVE the feel of these!" feeling...whether all 4 are the same hardness or you have a mix. You may actually find you prefer all of them to be as hard as possible...or as soft as possible...somewhere in between...or some sort of mix. Changing them up, there will be a different feel, of course, so don't just skate a single lap or up and down the block once and say "Nope!" (unless it truly feels "off" to you)...give each set up time...try some tricks...move on to a different set up if needed. :)

    I first watched this 5 months ago and just wanted to come back and thank you!
    I was planning a road trip to go to a roller skate shop to buy my first pair of skates. I was prepared to buy the cheapest pair of skates that fit me as I have never skated before. Thankfully this video made me realize that there really is a difference in quality so I decided to get the best ones that all of my money could afford. I didn't save enough money to buy that expensive of a pair on the trip, so I sacrificed my food and fun money and just ate Mr.noodles the entire time. It was so worth it though. Now skating is the best thing in my life.
    I have a few friends who bought the cheap pair I was originally going to and the vinyl is already cracked on one theirs. They also don't perform nearly the same as quality ones do and they are always complaining about sore feet. If I bought those same ones, I'd already be sick of them and would have to make another road trip to of buy a different pair of skates.
    I'm so glad I sacrificed everything I wanted to do on my road trip to get something better, because in the end it has brought me so much more joy than any amount of activities or good food on that trip ever could have. So again, thank you!

    Great video per usual. Maybe in the future, you could talk more in depth about the wear and tear skates take depending on how hard and often you skate which in my opinion should drive the decision on how much to spend on a pair of skates.
    If you're an adult and an occasional skater, skates that cost a couple of hundred bucks is probably just fine. If you're committing to the sport, you can buy a pair of cheap skates, but you should invest in a good solid pair of skates--i.e. a pair with a higher end boot, plate and wheels--not the $800 pair, but certainly not the $100 pair. Brownies (rentals) sometimes are a better option than buying a cheap pair of poorly, cheaply made, ill fitting skates that make your feet hurt and wear out quicker. You always give the brownies back, the pair you buy you keep. If you stick with the sport, trust, you'll end up spending more money in the long run. It's no different than playing basketball--a cheaper off-brand shoe is fine for the occasional player. If you're fortunate, God gave you one head and two feet. We gotta use all three well because there are no 'do overs'!!
    Thanks Deb for letting me add my 2 cents!!

    I got my first skates a few weeks ago, brand new in a box, supermarket brand- but they were $7 in a thrift store- so how could a low budget person like me (never stepping on skates before) not buy them? So I did, and I learned how to ride forwards in that time, even though I was sweating and tripping back almost every time. Last time one advanced skater asked if he could see my wheels, it seemed to him there's something wrong with them. Well, they were keeping me... in place. They weren't even turning as much as the poorly turning wheel you showed- only as much as I pushed them. He told me to get new bearings. Bearings turned out to be expensive, so I just left my shitty skates in the local skate store to get them cleaned on the inside and today we'll see what comes out of it... the store owner told me my boot is also too loose and too soft, and it's about to crack in several places. Now that I know for sure I'm passionate about it (even when I have worst possible tool to do it) I might get a new pair; I earned it, I guess- I really wonder now how good must rolling feel in decent skates :) Thank you so much for your videos, all of them- I'm a fan of yours from the very first one that I saw- you give me so positive attitude and it gets me excited about skating no matter how hard it seems sometimes! Always so happy to see new things from you

      I have those skates.
      I always buy tie caps for my skates. Keeps them besutiful cause i skate outdoors and do fall.
      I would suggest u change the bushings to softer bushings ie the orange powerdyne barrel and cone bushings. It makes edge work easier. At one time, i thought the plate was terrible. I already owned clem lollys. But when i changed my cushions correctly it was just as good as skating on the nylon plate that comes with the lolly.
      .i stopped falling as much when i changed my bearings and wheels. I bought the same type they have in the lolly for 25. That can wait, though, until u get more comfortable with skating
      These are simple upgrades and helped my skating get better. But if u are starting from scratch, leave the bushings and bearings as is so u can least know how to skate. Then adding those 2 changes changed my skating for the better. I also got new wheels when i got new bearings.i got radar energy. I love them.they arent as gummy but i think performs better than the pair that came with it.they were 50.
      I have all three levels of moxi. I bought lolly then jungle then black jack....the lolly and jungle are great deals for what they charge u for. The plate is aluminum and alum is heavier than nylon but would be better to go to skateparks with. If i was gonna go try to bowl skate as a beginner, i would skate with the jungle without changing the bushings or bearings (until u are comfortable with those ramps-then i would change my wheels and bearings to go faster). Stiffer trucks may be better when learning.
      Im not good but i learned a little about skates. Def get it instead of the impala lep

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 4 года назад +4

      The main difference is the material. The Jungle's - and Beach Bunny's - just have a vinyl boot versus the suede leather of the Lolly or Jack. This means it might take a bit longer for the break-in period. Vinyl NEVER stretch to "form" to your foot like a leather boot will, but it WILL break in eventually. The issue with most vinyl skates - from Sure-Grip to Moxi - is that they are often narrow so many people with even slightly wider feet than "normal" get frustrated with them before they are truly broken in and give up. Deb says put them on daily - even if it's just for a few minutes. Me? I actually sleep with mine for the first couple nights when I get new ones (vinyl or leather) to help that break-in process go a little faster. Yeah, I'm weird. LOL

      @MystiqueRisingSun 4 года назад

      @@IagainstI. I'm usually a side sleeper so it's not really that difficult, thankfully! Sleeping on your stomach, it's also easy. However, yeah, it might be a bit difficult for those who prefer to sleep on their backs. Even the lightest weight skate would probably get really heavy after a while...and your ankles/legs would probably be sore in the morning. It's also not recommended if you sleep with someone (spouse/kids). LOL They might not appreciate that too much. :)

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 4 года назад +3

      I don't know what all Deb uses, but real skaters don't use "stores" because actual, physical, stores don't carry the higher end skates. We order either through our local rinks or from online skate shops. Even Amazon has some higher quality skates than say, Big 5, K-Mart, or Walmart, etc. offer. (If you're in he US.) Cheap skates aren't good and good skates aren't cheap. Skates should (at the time of this comment) be AT LEAST around $80 if you want a quality skate that will last more than a few sessions. Much less than $80 and you're either going to get a child's type "toy" skate or they're not going to last you very long. Save up if you have to...buy what you like. Don't "settle" just because you wants skates NOW. Take the time to read the specs of all the skates you like and once you've got the money saved, THEN purchase a pair that best fits your needs.
