      @@artwithjessb2576 you should do it. I haven’t roller skated in 30 years and I just got back into it. NO phone or computer. Just so much fun! Now for the summer I roller skate at the school across the way because there is some almost new pavement. Perfectly flat with no cracks. I take my big broom with me and just sweep the area just to make sure there is nothing to trip me up! I have the whole place to myself. I just take my ear buds, plug in and enjoy myself. No one to bug me, no adult children who haven’t flown the coop lol, no dogs and no hubby. It’s a beautiful peace. You can’t put a price on that. I am 50 btw. Just do it because it feels amazing! ❤️🛼🛼

    Could you perhaps make a video about skate care? How do you know whether the wheels are too tight/loose and how to fix them if they are? What are the best ways to make sure all your wheels are adjusted to the same interval? And how do you check if your trucks are balanced? I bought a pair of skates after not skating for almost a decade, and I'm a bit blitzed. Heck, going into detail of the parts of a skate would be great.

    • @laurarusso9424
      @laurarusso9424 5 лет назад +30

      DandelionFunky yes! Plus truck tightening/loosening and how high or low should toe stops be?

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад +39

      Wheels are pretty easy. If they don't move, they're too tight. Too loose? They'll "jiggle" on the axle (slide up and down on the axle) when the skate is sideways or they'll wobble left to right and back. The wheel is on properly when there is little to no wobble, but they still spin freely. ( go for a 15 second rule if you have speed washers. A gentle spin, they should roll for 15 seconds. A bit less - 8-10 seconds - without the washers. Honestly, it's impossible to adjust all 8 wheels to the exact same intervals. As long as they roll and aren't too loose, you're good.
      Not sure what you mean by your trucks being "balanced". Could you explain a little more?
      If you got new skates, EVERY decent pair of skates come with a basic skate tool and a checklist. Read that sheet! Some have a diagram of the basic parts, but many don't. You can google that. This one is my favorite: i.pinimg.com/originals/05/dc/28/05dc2813f21f2195c39e24bf506cf07f.jpg While it details a derby skate, honestly, the only difference in most skates are the boot style and if they're indoor or outdoor skates. By that, I mean, every skate has a plate, trucks, wheels, axles, toe stop (tough unless you specifically got a NTS plate, you'll have a fixed stop or an adjustable stop, this diagram shows an adjustable stop as they're more common in derby), etc.
      Hope this helps you a little.

    • @OhhState
      @OhhState 5 лет назад +6

      I second this. I'm slowly figuring it out, but all of a sudden one or both of my skate will start pulling one direction really bad. Does the truck need to be loosened, or tightened, is it something else, etc. Would love someone to explain this better.

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад +17

      @@laurarusso9424 Tightening and loosening the trucks is simple. The bigger bolt on the bottom of your skate (use the diagram I link)...as with all mechanics, "righty tighty/leftly loosy" if it helps. NO ONE has their trucks adjusted exactly the same. There is no "right" or "wrong" tightness or...er..."looseness" (?? LOL)...it's all about how they feel to YOU. Personally, I love my back trucks SUPER tight while I prefer my fronts *slightly* loose (the fronts do have to be a little loose in order to turn properly)....my husband likes his front and backs so loose he puts on his skates, lifts his feet up off the ground, and you can hear them rattle! So, that is up to you. Honestly? Play with them! Tighten them down as much as possible. Skate a lap around the rink or up and down your sidewalk/driveway. Don't feel right? Loosen then 1/4 of a turn with that handy skate tool that came with them. Again, go skate a lap or up and down wherever you prefer outside. Keep repeating that process. Once you're confident on your skates, you can then start to loosen them up a little bit. If you feel wobbly, tighten them back up a little.
      Toe stops are also an individual preference. Again, there is no "right" or "wrong". Most of those in derby live by the "3 finger rule". Put your skate on a flat surface. Then, push the TOE down until the toe stop hits the surface. Take your opposite hand. Making that "shooting a gun" motion with THREE fingers instead of two. If the back wheels rest on your fingers, you're good. If you can fit 4 (or more) fingers under the wheels, you may want to set your toe stop a bit lower....if you can only fit 2 fingers (or barely even one), you may want to raise your toe stop a little. However, as stated, this is personal preference. Doesn't matter what skates I'm on (I have 7 pairs)...with adjustable stops, I always set mine as far up as possible...my youngest daughter has fixed stops (no adjusting), my middle daughter likes the 3-Finger Rule...and my husband and oldest daughter actually prefer jam plugs over toe stops. Loosen them as much as possible without them falling off. Put your skates on. Stand with one hand on a chair to help you balance if needed. Point your toe like you're going to use the toe stop. Does it feel like it's "catching" too soon? (Again, too soon TO YOU), then raise it a little, try again. If it feels like you're going to bend your foot backwards reaching for the stop, you may have it set too short - again, for YOUR liking. Once that stop is at a height you like, set it. Then, do the same with the other skate until it's where you're comfortable with it.

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад +6

      @@OhhState Usually, if it feels like it's pulling, that often means the trucks are too tight. The difficult part is figuring out which truck it is (it's usually not both of them). Use the tips detailed in my reply to Laura for adjusting your trucks. :)

    OMFingGGGGGGGGGG Dirty Deb!!! I just had the BEST skate sesh I've ever had in my life!!! I started out with Step 1 in my office before I hit the trail. Then practiced Steps 2,3 and 4 the whole 40 mins of my sesh and Holy Hell what a flippin difference! I talked to myself the whole time too lol... down with the butt, up with the gut... chin up, shoulders straight, snack center in tight, knees bent... it was amazing and I'm super proud of myself, I didn't fall once! Wooo Hooo!!! One thing I did notice is that I was leaning forward a lot and had to correct myself. I think this might be because the skates I've been using were Reidell r3's (derby skates), which have no heel, and now I'm using Moxi Lolly's which have a heel so it's a whole different feel to em. Thank you soooooo much for being such a good instructor and breaking things down the way you do. Now I'm just waiting for you to roll out the transitioning from flatland to downhill video. I have 2 spots where they're downhill and at the bottom there's a 4-way stop, where most cars just lightly tap on their brakes instead of actually stopping and I've almost gotten ran over a few times. BTW, today I used your scissor method to slow myself down then turned backwards and went down the hill in a lunge position so I was already in position to stop at the bottom. Lol As always, you ROCK Dirty Deb!!!

    Thanks so much for naming the little grind I go through most times I hit the rink where it takes about an hour for me to get over initial jitters, or, as you call it, a certain "shakiness," and gain back the confidence to really get my roll on. I've only been skating for about six months now, so it still feels a little unnatural and scary initially each and every time I get back out there. But today my wife and I did this routine as a warm-up when we arrived at the rink, and it really did help to fast-track that annoying period of adjustment. Much appreciated!

    The tips in this video have helped me tremendously. One thing that I notice is that I have a favorite side, most likely due to only rink skating. I can crossover those counter-clockwise corners like a boss, but clockwise? It's as if I had never skated! 😂 So I took to heart what DD said, that we shouldn't have a strong side and a weak side, to strive for both sides to be equal (these may not be HER exact words, but you get the picture).
    I finally bought a pair of skates and am able to skate outside. I found a perfect "rink" up at my local park (the basketball court) and I have been using the practice moves from this video. I can do DWTB,UWTG as many times as I want and no one cares! Scissors all over the place! I can also skate clockwise because there's no rules! 😊 I was determined to have my crossovers be equal. Learning about edges is key. I thought about what edges I was using going counter and then just reversed that going clock wise and after many laps I finally broke through that hurdle and things worked! My legs did what they were supposed to! Thank you so much for your coaching. I keep your words of wisdom with me every skate.

    These are my favorite types of videos. I’ve been skating for a number of years, and am a competent skater at the rink, but still lack the skills and confidence to comfortably skate at higher speeds outdoors, go down any sort of incline, or do transitions consistently. I find these videos extremely helpful because you offer smaller steps and a more gradual means of progression, such as exercises to improve balance, to build up to doing more advanced maneuvers. To me, it’s more confidence boosting, and safer, to do progressively more challenging movements than to just attempt something like transitions or jumping over and over and over until you finally get it right. I think there aren’t enough videos that show how to develop those more basic but fundamental skills and techniques, so thank you.

    I so wish you were local! I desperately need private lessons for two reasons-poor coordination, fear of getting hurt (even though I’m padded from head to toe), and embarrassment. No instructors or rink near me offers lessons. Your videos are very helpful and I get the techniques and tips mentally, but for whatever reason I can’t translate my “getting it” to “performing it.” I’m still going to keep watching because I love your teaching style, and maybe at some point my head and body will finally click together!

      Laura Russo skating is a super social sport! Go with friends and learn with them, it helps to try to teach techniques even if you aren't perfect at it. You'll learn even more as you try to teach it to your friends.
      And talk to other skaters at the rink too. I think you'll be surprised how much they'll want to help you learn something or if you have questions! Just try to have fun with it 😊

    Get a small notebook to write your practice plan in and take it to the rink with you. Write notes about the exercises you did and how well you performed them, how you felt, etc. This helps you remember what to practice and looking back over your notes you will see progress when you feel like you aren't progressing.

      Change your wheels for whatever surface you're skating on...and sure! Indoor wheels used outdoors doesn't work well...nor vice versa...but there are some wheels (82A - 92A) that you can sometimes use indoors and out. It all depends on exact surfaces. Just be sure to clean your wheels if you've got indoor/outdoor ones. When switching wheels, be sure to check all the cracks and crevices of your plates before going indoors - gravel and small rocks can get stuck in the trucks and be shaken loose. The last thing ANY rink skater wants is to hit a rock on their smooth, wood, floor!

    • @kristalburns3490
      @kristalburns3490 5 лет назад +2

      The difference between outdoor skating and indoor skating is the wheels. If you have the big squishy outdoor wheels and want to skate indoors you need to simply change out the wheels to an indoor wheel. Also check out your rink rules. Some do not allow wheels that have been skated outdoors even if they are the right hardness for the rink.

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад +3

      @@kristalburns3490 If the wheels are clean, you can use outdoor wheels indoors. Going from indoor to out it doesn't matter as much. As for hardness, it's up to the skater...and the rink. My local rink, I still use a 78A wheel for my backs (The Moxi Gummy wheels) but an 85A on the fronts (Luminous light-up wheels). When skating outdoors, I use the same set-up, but sometimes I will switch to a 78A front wheel, too. My local trail around a park, I go for the 85A's. The "local" rink that's further away, I run a 92A wheel as that rink is better taken care of than my local one. The local - closer - one is almost always dusty so I slide if I wear my 92's there.

    • @kristalburns3490
      @kristalburns3490 5 лет назад +1

      @@MystiqueRisingSun I grew up in really weird rinks. They would spaz if you t stopped on their precious coated floors ( not even a wood floor) and cleaned or not if they were wheels used outdoors they wouldnt let you skate etc etc.

    Dirty Deb I flippin LOVE you!!! Lol I think that if I lived in Cali you and I would be buddies! =) This is a grrrrrreat video!!! I'm a snowboard instructor (my fun job) and was looking for something to do in the summer months to keep me moving, something other than the gym, so I decided upon skating. Between you and Indy Jamma Jones I have already learned sooooo much in such a short period of time. I really connected with you in this video when you said everyone has a 'weak' leg/foot. I'm left-foot forward on my snowboard and teach A LOT of lessons riding that way so when I ride right-foot forward (goofy) I'm obviously not as good or comfortable. I'm finding this to be true also with skating. I've noticed that I try to avoid being on my right foot, especially during cross-overs, I get all spazzed-out/tensed up and feel like I'm going to bite it! Lol I ride outside on a bike path everyday during lunch, weather-permitting, and have about 40 minutes. These last 2x's I've been trying to lift my left foot for a couple seconds and cruz solely on my right foot, trying to get used to being on my weak lil one!!! ;-) I'm now going to incorporate all these moves from this video into my routine daily and hope this gets me more used to being on my weak lil right foot. lol I'm not gonna lie though, I'm a lil nervous about the "Step 3" moves, keeping one foot stable and pushing solely the whole time with the other foot. I'll let ya know how it goes. Wish me luck!!! =) Oh and P.S. I took your advice and reached out to the Wicked Skate wear team about that badass mint green hooded tank you wore in your outside video and they hooked me up with one. It is now my hands-down favorite, most-comfortable tank I own. I'm actually thinking of buying another one in a different color so I don't wear this one out too soon. I've gotten a lot of compliments on this one. You ROCK sista!!!

    Is it just my nerves, or is going out onto the rink alone really as awkward as it seems like it would be? I don't have anyone to skate with so I'm wondering if it's a good idea for me to go by myself

      @kristalburns3490 5 лет назад +2

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад +3

      Just nerves/awkwardness. I skated alone at my rink's Friday morning session. (Only the second one so far, it's a "summer thing" at my rink.) It was a bit weird at first, but as she said in another video, skating IS a social thing. I wasn't on that floor for 5 minutes before a couple other adults came up to me and started talking to me. It does help that I'm a regular s I did, at least, know the staff, but even without that, skaters tend to know/see when you're there alone - especially the regulars - and will usually make that effort to talk to you..help if needed, etc. I actually found it a bit more relaxing than normal. That might have been because there weren't a ton of kids...could have been because there were more adults...or maybe it's just because I didn't have my own kids barking in my ear that they were hungry/thirsty...most likely it was the combo. LOL I knew there were others I could talk to if I wanted, but I also enjoyed the "solitude" of not HAVING to talk to anyone if I didn't want to. If you're the outgoing type, talk to other adults, if you're more of an introvert, or just shy, wait for them to come to you (it'll happen). Don't get me wrong, it usually is more fun to be with a group, but at the same time, don't be afraid to go alone! :) Both has their ups and down. Plus side of going alone...when you're ready to leave, you can leave. No "Aw, come on, just one more song!" or - half an hour into the session "Okay, can we go now?" You and you ALONE decide when to arrive and when to leave! LOL

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад +1

      @@NoTrollZone It does help a little if they see you there "all the time"...but in my area, I'm fortunate we've got a good indoor crowd (people still look at my girls and I funny when we skate outdoors, though)..so it's pretty common here for someone to come up and ask how often you get out there, what skates, boots, plates, wheels, etc. others have...pretty much anything skate related. :) Here, we often say "Your rink family IS your family"...because it's true. There's a small-ish group of regulars (14-15 of us who are there pretty much EVERY session) and we even get together outside of the rink - BBQ's, day trips, house-warming parties, baby showers, birthdays, etc. Most of us are parents, so we all kind of keep an eye on each others' kids...some of the older ones babysit the younger ones (at the rink and in others' homes)...it's amazing here. I just wish there was a good outdoor skating community.

My Hubby is giving me a 50th Roller Skating Birthday Party in 4 days and I have followed these 5 steps and practiced my heart out for a month-My ONLY goal was to not wipe out at MY party. Lol! I’m so happy to say that I believe I am a better skater now than in the 1980’s!!!! #Xanaduforever
    Love you!!

    Your videos are wonderfully helpful and motivating!! I'm a brand new skaters and I really feel like I'm making progress because you explain the theory very well. I like that you show the same thing "over and over" because as a beginner, there's not much that feels intuitive (to me at least). Thank you! And I love your positivity!
