    I nominate Janie to run for president! She gets things done!

      I'd run on the common sense and basic math platform, but then I wouldn't have time to work on the LK House so I'll have to pass.

    Okay. Super hopeful it’s NOT a roof problem. So aggravating to have more water issues. I would potentially just implode. Now, with some high British tea time at 4pm, I’d recover…though probably not as quickly as Janie. So annoying, those projects that you know aren’t the most prominent and groundbreaking but that have to be done and that take FOREVER for some reason!! I serially felt that door situation. Glad it was at least eventually done and using a very pretty door considering.
    Queen. You’re a warrior. Hopefully, I’ll have a gift to bring one day when I hopefully am able to visit. I’ve already fallen in love with Galveston through this channel alone.

      Oh, you are always so supportive. That crazy door should have taken an hour at best. I just couldn't get it together that day. Unfortunately, I just had a similar ordeal fixing the window that got sucked out of the third floor. I certainly get my steps in. It would be wonderful if you came to Galveston to see the house in person. Pick a fall or spring month when the weather is much better.

    Special thanks to the volunteers and all the visitors who stopped by to learn more about the League-Kempner House. I am sure the tour was enjoyable and the funds raised was surely appreciated as was the work of the volunteers.

      Won't it be a happy day for all when we post the last "water in the basement" video. I just was on facebook that Galveston got 6 inches of rain over a three hour period Friday night. I'm guessing there's a ton of water in the basement right now.

  • @kathrynlitchfield7140
    @kathrynlitchfield7140 5 месяцев назад +1

    Sheesh… seeing all the recent pictures of flooded Galveston, I have been wondering how the basement has fared. This video is a good (bad) answer to that question.
    Janie, you inspired a massive project in my back yard this year. My take on it was “If Janie can tackle the LK House, then I can tackle this back yard.” I installed a French drain field between my pool and fence, buried our downspout output, and tied the two systems together into a common output. All of that work was then buried under between 10”-20” of gravel. Phase two is fake turf in that part of the yard. Each night, I said to myself, if Janie can do those long days, I can too.
    All that is to say that permanently de-watering the U shaped area is achievable, but whew will it be work! 😅

    • @leaguekempnerhouse
      @leaguekempnerhouse  5 месяцев назад +1

      Just got down here today and checked on the basement. It did get water which was expected. Galveston had 6 inches of rain in less than three hours. That intensity is our problem.

    • @blazertundra
      @blazertundra 5 месяцев назад +2

      Downspouts connected to French drains are absolutely worth it. I live in a new build home. They did the underground drain for the front but not the back. Even with our torrential summer storms (probably about half what you get in Galveston) there are no erosion issues in the front. The back half is a very different story...

    • @leaguekempnerhouse
      @leaguekempnerhouse  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@blazertundra We have a drain system but the capacity needs to be increased. We will probably need to lay a second pipe once the gutter is installed. Water is such a problem. I'm glad you drain did the trick for you. Are you thinking of doing the back, also?

    • @blazertundra
      @blazertundra 5 месяцев назад

      @@leaguekempnerhouse it's something I'm hoping to avoid. It's dry enough in AZ that laying gravel in the water's path is usually enough to prevent erosion, as long as the grading is right. We will see after this winter if my gravel solution holds up.

    A vinegar soaked rag works wonders on rust. That knob is exactly what I need.

      @leaguekempnerhouse  5 месяцев назад

      Vinegar is great for so many things. This knob was broken and had a wicked jagged edge. We can find you a better one..

      @aaronschindewolf6659 5 месяцев назад

      @@leaguekempnerhouse Yes, in the process of getting the knobs off, the other one got a hole as well, so they were both completely rusted through.

    Great video as always Janie. I wonder if a weather seal would do any good on the basement door where the new leak is? We had rain blowing in under our new door during storms and we found an inexpensive pivoting seal to put along the bottom at the local hardware. It sticks out at an angle when the door is open but when closing it hits an angled stopper you install on the frame which forces it down straight to form a tight seal.

    • @leaguekempnerhouse
      @leaguekempnerhouse  4 месяца назад +1

      I think our issue is more rising water and less the door seal itself but I'm going to look into the pivoting seal just in case. What we keep finding is that our water problem is really a series of issues and when you fix one, it shines a light on the next issue. Slowly but surely, we are tracking them down and getting solutions installed. It seems never ending at times, but I think we may be close.

    Janie, when I see you using a drill, and I see Heather digging a trench, and Jo cleaning, I think it's mostly women. I am your age, and after Beryl, I went over to my backyard neighbor and fixed the fence. My arms and back hurt for several days. I look around and see fences down in the nearby neighborhoods, but nothing gets fixed. I've fixed fences for neighbors and the guys let me, ir they watch.
    I've seen your burly basement crew. What you are doing is hard work. I don't understand why more locals don't volunteer, and why the work is going slow. Most of all, I don't understand how it got this way. Things don't move fast in my opinion, is it red tape? Or is it a general feeling of just them not stopping by because God knows this is a burden on you, and you should not be doing all that dirty work. I just wanna cover those beautiful couches with plastic, when I see them sitting in a construction zone, too. That's what I'm talking about. I hope you are feeling better. Have a good day!

    • @leaguekempnerhouse
      @leaguekempnerhouse  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for caring about us Dianne. Funny thing is, I love doing the work. The nice thing about being a nonprofit is that we can go slow. It takes time to build a volunteer base and get projects organized. We are working to improve that process because we love the extra help. You have been such a hard worker here and we really appreciate how much you love this house.

    • @dianemasterson2132
      @dianemasterson2132 5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, but you put a dress on, too...that you love! It's like I'm on read-only, invisible not only do I not get calls, but no email. And work alone is no fun. So I think you should have a volunteer day with lots of personnel, get them to sign- in, and gitter done! I like helping out, but I rather dislike working alone. It's more fun when you have people who are there with you. And no more dizzy spells!!
