- What Mountain Bike Should I BUY for XC?
My beloved Orbea Oiz mountain bike is no more and it is time I branched out to my next full suspension. I am looking between the Salsa Spearfish, the Giant Anthem, and the Niner RKT RDO. All three are phenomenal bikes in their own right. Which bike would you purchase if you had the option and were racing cross country.

If you were to buy a mountain bike right now to race marathon distance XC events, what would your recommendations be?
Canyon lux trail
Cannondale Scalpel
Bmc Fourstroke great european bike that can fit more bottles
My 2016 Scalpel Si, it's on marketplace 😂
between the given bikes, i will choose the Spearfish the downside is my chainring is limited to 34t?
I will be keeping my 2021 Anthem Advanced pro a bit longer thanks to you for your review back in the day 👍
Would Giant Trance be an option? Slightly more travel (130/120), but it seems like nice option for longer, epic rides. And it has maestro :)
My pick would be the new 2023 Pivot mach 4. with the XT build, then some light carbon wheels laced with Berd spokes.
I tried to buy an Orbea Oiz after watching your videos earlier in the year and my local shop said that would just be impossible. Seems your shop's experience with Orbea is pretty well shared.
Sorry to hear about your shop dropping Orbea. I have a Kona Hai Hai I ride XC on and have been looking at the Orbea H20 LT (new for 2499) for Trail. Thanks for the content!
Dear Cameron, you are selling your beloved OIZ, whilst I will keep mine, as it really rides well on the trails here. I wish you good luck with your choice🤠, and thanks for your nice videos...
I think the salsa is a great choice! It looks similar to the Kona Hei hei and that bike is a mix between downcountry / cross country. And among the 3 bikes, this is the most stable/ comfy for marathons. What's most important is what you want, what makes you happy and not other people's opinions. 👍
Whatever you choose nothing can beat that salsa paintjob 😍
I would recommend looking at Santa Cruz blur and a few of the trek model bikes before you go with the salsa.
Too bad about Orbea. I bought an Oiz partly based on your reviews. My wife loved it so much she bought her own. Amazing bikes. Hope you enjoy your Salsa!
If the Anthem had 2 cages, I'd have one. I went with a Blur TR. 3 cages. I've got remote lockouts and the 120/115 travel. Perfect for marathon XC. I've also taken it off some big drops and to some bike parks. Not as plush as a more sophisticated suspension design but does the job.
I ride the BMC fourstroke which has a virtual pivot suspension not a flex stay style. I can’t say enough good things about the geometry and the attention to detail that these bikes have. I sometimes wonder why they are never in the Convo in the US. The new models have 2 bottle cages and they are proven World Cup winners. I know they are not cheap however I think you get into one for around 6k still. Just my 2 cents. I absolutely love mine. I’ve heard great things about the 9er and the Anthem also.
Have you looked at the Ghost Lector SF or Modraker F-Podium? Floatig suspension design. Also, take a look at Lurbel gillet for XCM. Very popular with the spanish racers here
also thinking of buying a next bike from my oiz ,since the store that deal with orbea have closed down and other issues , probaly the spearfish deore 12 or the SLX or the canyon lux trail . want to do some enduro races also.
Salsa for sure!!
Hey Mossie. I currently ride the last generation of Niner RKT and I love it. I owned an Anthem before and the built quality was not comparable to the Niner. Consider the latest RKT comes with the flip-chip for adjusting the geometry which is great. Too bad you can't fit 2 bottles... Consider a hydration pack. ?
Try a Santa Cruz Blur.
Sounds like you already picked the Salsa, but I like the Niner. Also, keep an eye on QBP since they are doing a bit of bike brand and model shuffling right now. I doubt it would affect the Spearfish, but you never know.
Bought an Orbea 2 years ago. Took 15 months to arrive.
Going to do a follow up video of what you picked?
Loved my horsethief also loved my anthem. 😂
Hey Mossie, I was going to pull the trigger on an Oiz but my dealer encouraged me to try out a Revel Ranger. I ended up with the Ranger because the suspension wasn’t as harsh. It’s comparable to the Spearfish’s weight. I bought it with long endurance races in mind.
I also was thinking of the rangar
@@sherwin3williams I’ll never buy something without trying it first and I tried this bike before buying. It’s not a bike for weight weenies ruclips.net/video/M1y5LBY0PnI/видео.htmlsi=EYGGDPgvBryCH_K6
Salsa needs to figure out the carbon rear triangle. Other than that, I think that bikes solid
Have you checked out the Intense Sniper? Dual link suspension, 2 water bottles, lightweight, competitively priced direct to consumer, regular boost, meh paint job.
Heard there's a Costco version under the 951 brand but pretty much the same bike for less money?
What about tne Neuron 7?? I think it's one of the best Marathon/Trail bike out there...what's your take on it??
ibis exie or pivot mach4 sl? or the bmc fourstroke or mondraker f-podium if you prefer european bikes
Spearfish would have been a good option for me if I carried the brand. But my Kona Hei Hei would have still edged it out i think
What do you think will happen to the ebike market in 2024, will it be cheaper than this year?
My Oiz has 2 bottle cages.
That’s not Mossie.!! He never shave !! 🤣
Makes zero since for XC bike to be super boost in my opinion. I have overlooked many frames because of this. I want to switch parts around between bikes as needed so important to me that all are same standard.
Whats the deal with Orbea? I see negative comments but no detail? If your going to throw a Bike Manufacturer under the buss perhaps elaborate on what issue you had. Thank You.
Orbea Oiz is where I am going soon
Best bike: spearfish.
Get the Salsa, you should be fine .
Spearfish for the win, unless you will come to the Santa Cruz side of the spectrum….?
That SALSA is FUGLY 🤮
You are a famous rockstar.
The 2bottle Yeti ASR is the way to go !!!
There are too many choices of the same thing.
it's like buying eggs at the super market .
there are -
normal eggs
organic
free range
vegan
hormone free
white
brown
large
extra large
and on and on .
most high ends bikes are similar enough in quality and performance that one could make their choice based on superficial things like shape and color and be happy with their purchase .
If it's not a hard tail, it's not really an XC bike! And the kind of gnarly chunky shit is not really XC trail. STOP trying to force a one size fits all kind of mountain biking and racing. You want to trail ride great trail ride, stop trying to make XC the same as trail.!!!!
cry about it
What's wrong with buying an Orbea Oiz direct and taking it to a shop for tuneup? Is that offensive to the shop? Why sell a bike only because of the relationship with the shop? I haven't bought a bike in decades and am trying to learn and understand. Since I will be riding mostly though cities, parks and jumping curbs, I'd prefer a lighter mountain bike.
People are trying to tell me it costs money to test ride bikes at their local American shops
