i haven’t watch bottoms yet, but i have watched the bear, and her role there as sydney resonated with me as much. it’s like i finally saw myself in a character.
I read that Marshawn Lynch decided to play Mr G in this film so that he could atone for reacting negatively upon learning that his sister was gay when they were teenagers. Though they've since patched things up, with him giving her away at her wedding, his sister thought that appearing in this movie was a great idea.
I worked on Bottoms as one of the football players. All the cast and crew worked really hard for a month and a half day and night;and I’d like to speak on half of everyone involved and say ‘thank you all for seeing the film and we are so glad you guys enjoy it. This was one of my first extended projects working as an aspiring actor and I got to meet some of the best laughs and meet some of the most amazing people. It’s crazy because while filming I was hoping a RUclips channel would like it and I can maybe see myself in an in depth movie analysis; low and behold Karsten Runquist himself is talking about it while I’m eating late night pizza rolls. I loved the small background details, like the football players in full gear and cleats at all time, the kid in the cage that never gets explained or even addressed until it’s needed, the library getting shot up so “no more reading this year, again”, it killed me
Same! I loved the little details. I loved the bit as well with that guy and the jocks throw a fruit cup at him and he gets out his book and starts planning how he’s going to blow up the school. I love black comedy and made me crack up. Like even now just thinking about it is making me giggle and I like NEVER laugh out loud when watching films haha!
The football players in full gear reminds me of Daria. The main jock on that show was literally always in his gear, even when the other football players weren't. Such a good gag.
The "but I'm a diner" diner in reference to "but I'm a cheerleader" with the waitress called "Natasha" (i.e. Natasha Lyonne) was a stroke of genius. Great to see a movie so rich in detail
I mentioned it on my letterboxd, but I really loved how Bottoms' brand of surreal and absurd helps to build the high school environment as its own microcosm very akin to how teenagers feel like high school is their entire universe. It's really great
This 100000%. As I was watching I noticed how surrealist the posters and banners around the school are. They’re super over the top, especially related to the football team. It made me feel like I was receiving the messaging in the same way many of the students were probably internalizing it, as opposed to what was actually displayed.

I just wish she would drop the jewish lesbian girl thing, shes neither and most of her filmography is portraying that. Shes clearly talented just based off bodies bodies bodies but its gonna get weird soon if she keeps going with it.
I love this film, this is my first time watching a work of Emma Seligman. One thing I loved about this film, is how excellent it portrayed Gen Z humor, being able to do raunchy vulgar jokes without degrading teens. The way the two leads delivered their jokes is exactly how most young adults joke around. It is upsetting that there is such limited screenings though.
Yeah completely agree! My friend and I are hs seniors and we were pleasantly surprised by how “not-millennial” the writing felt! Like the jokes were actually funny and actual things ppl our age would say. It didn’t feel like a millennial’s sad attempt at trying to relate to teens.
I think I disliked this movie because of the gen z humor lol None of the humor had any truth or satire in it. Just a bunch of yelling and every character acted like they were on speed. The opposite of funny IMO
I just watched this movie like a week ago. And that scene where Ayo goes on and on about getting pregnant by Matthieu and him becoming a fruity pastor just lives in my mind and I crack up all the damn time when I think about it
If I had a nickel for every time I've watched a summer 2023 comedy featuring music by Charli XCX, I would have two nickels. That's not a lot, but it's funny that it happened twice.
I’ve never resonated with a character more than Hazel. That character alone made the entire movie for me, and I love how the director gave her so much attention without forcing her into the main role (which I feel like wouldn’t work w her character trope and development)
Ayo and Havana's scene in the bedroom was absolute MAGIC. I was squished up in a fetal position in my movie theater seat with the biggest grin on my face. Ayo nailed how paralyzingly nerve-racking a situation like that can be.
Bottoms is the definition of camp. It knows exactly what it is & what it wants to achieve, and I think they definitely hit the mark even if not every single joke lands
i was thinking about this earlier but bottoms going straight to streaming internationally just feels like a waste. from all the reactions it just sounds like something that should be seen with a large group of people and everyone outside the us and canada unfortunately isnt able to experience that
fuck I wasn't aware of the streaming release yet :( what the fuck MGM/Amazon, don't you want more box office money now with all the strikes and whatever?? I live in the Netherlands and have been waiting so long to see this in cinemas
@@Jumperboy333 me too, I was just planning on seeing this in the theatres, I mean ffs Strays and every dogshit Insidious spinoff gets a theatrical release but not Bottoms? Even Theater Camp is in theaters, wtf.
i pretty much just watch films in the cinema (perks of working in one) and i was desperately looking for anywhere in the uk showing it and it's so upsetting that aren't any! Theater Camp is on in the cinema I work at and we show like five films a month. And even Cocaine Bear was on at the bigger cinema nearby.
I knew this film was going to be hilarious but did not expect it to be as healing and cathartic as it was. It was bizarre and insane and inane, but also extremely emotional. The way it joked about SA and DV and everyday sexism and heteronormativity was so good - I kept thinking about my own high school’s “Jeff” and how it was an open secret that he assaulted people. I loved how surreal their world was and all the Easter eggs. Josie studying from a textbook labelled “AP Math for Women,” the fair giving away blowup dolls as prizes, the Creation of Jeff painting, the But I’m A Cheerleader shoutout ❤ and the mascot’s giant dick. I’m also pretty sure there was a picture of Girl Defined at Hazel’s get-better party. I also have never been more attracted to anyone in a film as Ayo Edebiri in this role. Edit: AND PUNKIE JOHNSON KILLED IT.
Ayo was phenomenal. The awkward uncomfortable teen can be played out and predictable, but she delivered in a refreshing way and all of her jokes landed for me. I wish they had a bigger theatrical release
I don’t usually literally laugh out loud in movie theaters, but I was CACKLING in Bottoms! It’s literally the best teen comedy I’ve seen in like a decade. I think a major reason it’s so successful is not only the cinematic care taken with its visuals, but the characters are honestly such shitty people. And that makes them so relatable and so much like the classic characters from movies like Superbad. Like they’re annoying, and lame, and straight up bad friends. It’s hilarious and real. And it’s refreshing to see queer characters just be so flawed and awful! It’s getting to see these kinds of characters step out of the usual Hollywood archetypes that’s so nice
this movie deserves a MUCH wider release, our theater was full and everyone was laughing and cheering and i wish everyone could get that experience. it was so much fun and jumped right up my 2023 letterboxd rankings immediately
I’m usually not a fan of comedies but Bottoms knocked it out of the park. Having a young queer writer made all the difference. The humor felt current to REAL young people, the characters were relatable, and it didn’t water down its queerness to be more digestible for straight audiences. Also had an incredibly soundtrack. My entire theatre was full of queer folks clapping for every kiss and every fight scene :~)
I'm living in a college town right now with a women's college among a few other colleges - there's a LOT of gay people here and I saw this in a theater absolutely packed with gay college students who were cheering and cracking up the entire time. 10/10 experience for this movie
Also I hadn't thought of the Booksmart comparison but I think Bottoms definitely does have more potential to be a classic even though I really enjoyed Booksmart. I feel like Booksmart WANTS to be as chaotic and unhinged as Bottoms, but doesn't actually go there. Bottoms is absolutely insane and I love that it is
Rachel Sennott went to my high school and her family is pretty well known in my hometown. It’s so strange seeing her mentioned so casually amidst these other larger-than-life celebrities
I think Bottoms has more in common with heightened reality cult classic teen movies like Better Off Dead and Three O'Clock High over Superbad. The world they created was so bonkers and I didn't know what to expect. The fact that the film ends the way it does shows that Seligman really didn't care whether or not it made sense in a logical way, but she still stuck something that was emotionally resonant. It reminded me so much, tonally, of John Cusack racing down the mountain on one ski being chased by an evil paperboy. In spite of all the insanity, you still wanna see our heroes win and I think that's really remarkable given how comedies have become so sterile in modern cinema.

This was a very funny movie. Mostly due to the fact there was quite of bit of absurd/surreal humour that you don’t get in modern comedy anymore. 2023 is the comeback year for R rated movies and I'm here for it. I really hope these type of movies make a serious comeback to the big screens from here on out cause they are so great to watch in a full theater!
I wasn't ready for the end brawl. Obviously the movie was pretty absurd but I loved it going COMPLETELY off the rails. Thoroughly enjoyed this movie and I look forward to seeing it again when it comes out on streaming. ps I also really enjoyed Nicholas G-whatever but I haven't seen Barbie yet (it's okay I'm judging myself on that one)
i think my favorite thing about it is the fact that its in this weird unhinged fantasy that the cast semi-acknowledges the entire time. from the fact that the first class is literally like 5 minutes to the end where there is just an unexplained sword on the football field that a player impales himself on.
great timing i just saw this yesterday haha, and i absolutely loved it! one of those movies where its not even halfway over and you're thinking about when you're going to go see it again
I want to see this but it doesn’t seem to be playing at my local theatre. Watching the commercial gave me a similar feeling to how I felt watching “mean girls”.
It definitely feels like an amateur film. There’s a lot of awkward pauses, “um”s and “like”s, and you can definitely tell when they go from improved to written dialogue because the delivery becomes a lot less natural. It definitely doesn’t make the movie bad by any means, if anything it makes it more endearing, and since it’s a teen comedy, it actually works.
Seeing this for the 4th time tonight…and I still can’t get over having seen this premiere at SXSW with everyone there. As an awkward queer young adult, this is my new comfort film and I truly don’t mind seeing hot women fight either 🤷🏽♀️
While I do like Booksmart, I think you articulated some words that I've been looking for: That film, while clever at times, feels very much like it's *trying* to be the next Superbad. Bottoms wants to be the first Bottoms, and that's why I think it will have a much higher comedic icon status in the long run. The thing with classics is that the classics we know and love didn't become so beloved by trying to imitate form, they became classics because of their own originality. Bottoms very much aligns better with the status as an instant classic for this reason.
You're my favourite film reviewer on yt, going to british film school in about ten days and so glad i found this channel several years ago, hope you're doing well
The experience of going to see this in a small downtown theatre (since it was the only place showing it) and it being jam packed with queers absolutely laughing their asses off. cathartic 11/10
I just watch it yesterday and I agree it was better then I thought it would be. Comedies aren't my first choice but I love how they didn't take themselves so seriously. I loved the main characters.
I remember seeing Marshawn Lynch in Murderville, and had such a natural grasp of comedic timing. He was so funny and high energy, I'm glad to see him getting to do more comedies.
I’ve been wanting to see this movie since it was announced but I can’t find it playing anywhere remotely near me, which sucks because I’d rather see it on the big screen than streaming services
It’s amazing how I never knew about these 2 (Ayo and Rachel)…but after this movie I became a super fan. Ayo I had an idea of who she was cause of Ninja Turtles, Abbott Elementary and Across the Spider-Verse…but once I saw this I immediately started The Bear. She’s going places 🙌🏽 On the flip side, still need to check out more of Rachel’s work…but her and Ayo have some hilarious skits on Comedy Central.
@@ninanando I seen that movie..you’re right. I didn’t know who she was when I first saw it so it slips my mind that she was in it (wrote this before I started the video) but I loved her in that movie.

this is probably the first movie i've watched completely blind without even seeing the trailer or the karsten review. the 'last' shot rules and i too am a david fincher fan.
fire island is an incredible movie, i think because it takes the "classic" formula of pride and prejudice and updates it in a way that is still nuanced and multifaceted, just like jane austen's original book was. it takes gay asian p&p and yet doesn't lose any of the original book's themes and elements, placing austen's original misogyny and class criticism into the lens of anti-asian racism and the way it intersects with queer culture and homophobia. anyway please watch fire island joel kim booster and bowen yang are a delight
im so glad im seeing GUYS praise this movie so much cos it really shows other guys that it is possible for a woman to direct a very funny, authentic comedy about girls and it still resonates with people who are not girls! im so happy and i hope we get more films like bottoms!

The sword is dropped by the team mascot.
It's not meant to be realistic. It kinda reminds me of Heathers in that way, where everything is slightly surreal and off-kilter.
@@TerryChaves-h3d it's very heathers
i watched this movie in theaters with my christian middle aged mom and she loved it too!
great timing i just saw this yesterday haha, and i absolutely loved it! one of those movies where its not even halfway over and you're thinking about when you're going to go see it again
seeing Bottoms was the most fun I’ve had at a movie theater in a long time
I’ve been immensely compared to Hazel and I’m slightly confused but happy, GOTTA WATCH THIS MOVIE
I hope this movie gets more of a spot light, it’s really funny and creative, that climax as unexpected, I really loved it.
Hazel is just like me fr I am also extremely gullible and prone to bouts of terrorism
nobody has made a movie this funny in at least 10 years
I had a really good time watching. My girl and I kept shooting looks at each other because the jokes just hit lmao
This movie is proof Marshawn Lynch NEEDS to be in more comedies…if not Comic relief.
I say this as a Bay native.
Bay as in Green Bay?

I want to see this but it doesn’t seem to be playing at my local theatre. Watching the commercial gave me a similar feeling to how I felt watching “mean girls”.
Gerber throwing tge eggs was too much. Had me rolln for literal minutes 😂
“it’s not the next superbad, it’s the first bottoms” that’s when i realized this was the greatest youtube video of all time
It definitely feels like an amateur film.
"would not recommend this to my mom" I literally took my mom to see this and she will not look at me the same again.
bottoms movie of the century but UGH yes i loved rye lane sm and it hurts that it isn’t as popular, so glad you mentioned that
truly my movie of the year it honestly blew my expectations out of the park i will always love rachel and ayo forever
Seeing this for the 4th time tonight…and I still can’t get over having seen this premiere at SXSW with everyone there. As an awkward queer young adult, this is my new comfort film and I truly don’t mind seeing hot women fight either 🤷🏽♀️
While I do like Booksmart, I think you articulated some words that I've been looking for:
That film, while clever at times, feels very much like it's *trying* to be the next Superbad.
Was so bummed it didn’t get a wider release I would’ve loved to watch this in the cinema
The Art of Self Defense is an underrated comedy film from 2019 and one of my top 5 favs in an amazing year of films
i love this movie. it's the right amount of camp
karsten after he goes to the captial of portugal:
The water bottles, cheerleader, and "Footbaaaalll!" 💦🏈😂😂😂
You're my favourite film reviewer on yt, going to british film school in about ten days and so glad i found this channel several years ago, hope you're doing well
The experience of going to see this in a small downtown theatre (since it was the only place showing it) and it being jam packed with queers absolutely laughing their asses off. cathartic 11/10
I took my brother to watch with me and we both were belly laughing the whole time
Loved it! Love how it used the tropes and subverted the f out of them. Have you seen "Plan B"? That's a great hidden gem teen comedy. So funny.
“Cannot recommend this one to my mom” L saw it With mine and we laughed the entire time
I just watch it yesterday and I agree it was better then I thought it would be.
She’s going places 🙌🏽
On the flip side, still need to check out more of Rachel’s work…but her and Ayo have some hilarious skits on Comedy Central.
you should deffo watch shiva baby dude
@@Stella-iW123 I plan to. Heard good things.
watch Bodies Bodies Bodies, super hilarious and shes the best character
@@ninanando I seen that movie..you’re right. I didn’t know who she was when I first saw it so it slips my mind that she was in it (wrote this before I started the video) but I loved her in that movie.
Bottoms is what I hoped book smart would be, I loved it
KARSTEN HOW HAVE U NOT WATCHED THE BEAR
this movie is quickly becoming my entire personality
watching this at the local theater here in portland was soooo fun and extremely gay - definitely felt like the kind of movie I had been waiting for for a long time!
i've seen it twice now and i definitely stand by it as one of the best movies i've seen this year.
With this comedy resurgence, I'm just so glad that we are getting movies that are really trying to be funny now!
I enjoyed it. Was not expecting it to be as absurdist as it was which once I figured that out I enjoyed it more.
I really enjoyed "Shiva Baby" so thanks for this tip!
"its not the next Superbad, its the first Bottoms" yes!!!!
this is probably the first movie i've watched completely blind without even seeing the trailer or the karsten review. the 'last' shot rules and i too am a david fincher fan.
I feel like I've been waiting for this movie my entire life.
"Its not the next superbad, its the first bottoms" love that
HOW DID I NOT REALIZE THAT WAS MARSHAWN LYNCH OH MY GOD
fire island is an incredible movie, i think because it takes the "classic" formula of pride and prejudice and updates it in a way that is still nuanced and multifaceted, just like jane austen's original book was. it takes gay asian p&p and yet doesn't lose any of the original book's themes and elements, placing austen's original misogyny and class criticism into the lens of anti-asian racism and the way it intersects with queer culture and homophobia. anyway please watch fire island joel kim booster and bowen yang are a delight
im so glad im seeing GUYS praise this movie so much cos it really shows other guys that it is possible for a woman to direct a very funny, authentic comedy about girls and it still resonates with people who are not girls! im so happy and i hope we get more films like bottoms!

I loved Bottoms but in what ways does it deconstruct the teen comedy genre? I was kinda waiting on specific examples there because I thought it was just unabashedly playing into the genre beat for beat.
thank you for shouting out Rye Lane again! It's driving me crazy that it didn't get the popularity it deserves
the soundtrack is so good!! man i want to watch this movie again
