I just want to say, don't punch people in the face. The face has a lot of hard surfaces that can break your hand. If you're punching hit soft areas where you're less likely to hurt yourself. Use padded areas, like the heel of the hand, against hard surfaces.
I also recommend the series Betty! It’s queer, with an almost all-women cast, and there are several black leads who have very different personalities - awkward very much included. You won’t regret it I swear !!!
The guy in the cage never being explained was one of the best jokes. Like, I cracked up when I saw him and even more when my questions about him were never answered.
“I really value when people use violence for me. It’s actually one of my love languages” is 100% something I would have said as a teenager, and I would have said it that genuinely too. I had some issues.
I’m so happy Ruby Cruz is getting her flowers as the sweet, put-upon Hazel. Especially after Disney canned Willow and effectively cheated her out of a star turn as Kit Tanthalos.
I haven't seen Purple Hearts, but he's freaking AMAZING in both Handsome Devil and Red, White & Royal Blue. (And this, too, obviously - the absolute polar opposite of his RWRB role.)
Hazel is best girl. That aside, I just fucking love how goofy and zany this got by the end. More goofy comedies need to take a surprising turn into *even goofier* cartoon nonsense in the third act.
I read an article that Marshawn Lynch decided to play Mr G to atone for reacting negatively when his sister came out as a lesbian when they were teenagers. Although they've since patched things up, and he gave her away on her wedding day, she supported him taking on this role.
Lynch has been acting since retiring and he is always a delight, like not just as a fan of his from football but his deadpan line delivery is legitimately hilarious. He was also in season 3 of Westworld and was highly needed for the levity.
Love how, even after the fight club shattered after the assembly fight, we saw _everybody_ from the club at Hazel's house to comfort her. She worked so hard, did so much, and they let her down. There's no dialogue, but it says so much.
I'm totally on board with actually showing characters being shitty people, especially in a setting where they should be learning from their mistakes and becoming better. Also, anyone who things girls can't be as relentlessly, rabidly, atrociously as horny as guys has never spent a second around a high school theatre group. Seriously, the shit I heard.
My sister actually out loud said “PJ NO!” When she did that ‘yeah hazel, lets do terrorism’ thing bc i. Also. Never understand sarcasm and often am midway thru doing something before my sister goes no!!! Thats not what i meant!!! It was pretty funny 🤣 and we both of course legit cheered when complicated started playing
I personally lost my mind when Avril Lavigne's Complicated started playing. The whole soundtrack for the movie is perfect but using Complicated at that moment was just a masterpiece. Loved it so much
“These obscene teen comedies/coming of age stories are just this kind of right of passage and it’s great to see them finally being told from a lot of different angles. Because girls can be the horny little weirdos too!” This is what I love about the show Sex Education. Such a broad range of representation done so very well.
The humor got me good, especially the little details. The scene where a student goes through the cafeteria line to get their spoonful of slop followed by the football player with a fancy steak dish on his tray had me screaming
I genuinely teared up when they explained Mr G's actor took on the role to make up for not being supportive of his real life sister when she came out. That's so lovely 🥹
This movie was the first that I felt really seen as a gay person. When Brittany tells PJ she’s straight, that moment felt SO real in this batshit movie. I bought the digital copy as soon as I could and I’ve watched this a half a dozen times already. Also great job with the sword, Amanda 😂
Even as a gay man in my late 30's that scene really hit me too. We've all had that gay crush on a straight friend and know you have to "wait it out" and move on since you know it's never gonna happen
I loved the movie, it was so much fun! However, I couldn’t help but wonder why our leads were wasting so much time obsessing over cheerleaders when Hazel was RIGHT THERE! I’m gonna need a reboot of Some Kind of Wonderful with Hazel as Mary Stuart Masterson’s character and Eric Stolz’s character done by a girl who actually deserves her.
When I first saw some kind of wonderful I thought Amanda was into Watts and that’s why she was jealous of Keith having a relationship with her not because she liked Keith. I want a some kind of wonderful remake that is gay.
Hazel's fantastic, but I also think it's entirely understandable why PJ and Josie are into Isabel and Brittany. They're both shown to be very likable throughout the movie. In the case PJ, since she ultimately ends up with Hazel, the way she's rejected by Brittany is very different from how a movie like this would've done it just a few years ago. She doesn't jerk away when PJ kisses her, but rather tells her that she's straight when PJ tries to kiss her again. She doesn't say anything to make PJ feel bad. You just know that a character like that would've had a homophobic response in a different movie.
I was unprepared for how crazy this movie was. I met two fellow lgbtq+ friends at my screening that are close to my age, which in my small retirement town in south Florida is a big deal, so I’ll be forever grateful to this movie for multiple reasons. I went and saw the movie again and every time I looked at the background something hilarious was going on. I can’t wait to watch it again!
As a lesbian from Seattle, Marshawn Lynch has always held a special place in my heart. He’s incredible. From Beast Mode to his obsession with Skittles to “I’m just here so I don’t get fined” and now Bottoms. He’s an absolute star and it’s so great to see him continue in his career like this.
this movie had me from the moment the lead jock came out and did that weird "oopsie" pose like the bully from cloudy with a chance of meatballs. and mr. g made me lose it when he said amelia earhart's not a hero bc there's a ton of guy pilots who didn't crash
I saw bottoms yesterday with a friend of mine and we were both laughing our heads off all through it. It's got a lot of heart to it, and it shows. Also can we please get more Ruby Cruz? She stole the show for me as Hazel.
Watched this today with my 19yo daughter, who had already seen it and loved it. Her friends had been telling her she was so much like one of the characters and as soon as Hazel came on screen, I said, “That’s who it is, isn’t it? They say you’re like Hazel. They’re right!” Hilarious movie, such lovable characters, and so much fun.
I’ve seen it twice and loved it!! As a huge Ruby Cruz fan from Willow where she plays a lesbian Princess badass ⚔️, I loved seeing her onscreen again as Hazel. This movie is a blast. And I was dying with laughter at so many spots, especially the Avril needle drop moment. I’m an OG Avril fan and loved it! My cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so much.
Hazel did do decent. She was on his back clawing at his eyes, but I think she would've won if she started hammer punching his head. Too bad. Also, paint-sniffing Amanda's step-dad actually seems pretty nice. Didn't she say he was trying to have board game night? And, when Josie got with Isabel, my stomach flipped. The anxiety was crazy. She knew she was with Isabel on wrong terms! She tried to blame PJ when they got caught, but like you said, she was just as bad, just less aggressive than PJ.
11:57 yes! This casting 30 somethings as teenagers. I basically used that trope to inspire my constume for one Halloween party in my 30s.....i wore a letterman jacket (no year on it) plus a huge neck gash and shirt soaked in fake blood....the title of my costume was "Generic horror flic victim: a 30 something playing a teenager" lol.
I watched this in theaters with my best friend (we’re both queer) and it was amazing! And don’t worry Amanda we are both teens and were rocking out to Avril.
I'm disappointed that Talk To Me was barely a week at my theater when uninteresting flicks have stayed for almost months at a time. I want to hope they show this one.
That's so weird. How many screens does your theater have? Personally, this movie has done very well locally so that just seems odd. I can kind of understand if there are only like 10 screens with Barbie and Oppenheimer dominating during that time, but I always find that horror/thriller films do well at anytime of the year. Honestly side-eyeing the heck out of the buyer for that theater, or whom ever made the schedule.
I love Hazel! Spoiler... I wouldn't say I liked how PJ treated her and how easily she forgot her; however I think Hazel had feelings for PJ alone . Both Rachel and Ayo are so good and funny.
Best use of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in a movie EVER!! (Also Ruby Cruz is amazing and deserves all the fame and fortune she could ever want.) Also also, can we just appreciate the placement of the characters on the poster, in that the _token straight girl_ is the one who seems to have her hand on another girl's junk? Mad props to whoever came up with that idea.
I'm like the polar opposite of the target audience of this film, but I'm not ashamed to admit I cried like multiple times in this film, sometimes just from laughing.
Amanda, I loved when you mentioned how you would've loved for this movie like how you did for D.E.B.S back then. For me, there was this nostalgic, yet unexpected feel to it all.
We went with my husband to watch it after the trailer picked our interest when we watched Barbie a few weeks ago. We are not big fans of raunchy comedies, but this one felt different for some reason, and it was more than enjoyable. The fight scene made my eyes water because I was laughing so much and the delivering of the punch lines was amazing. While we didn't get out of the cinema with a heartful, life changing message, we were still giggling by the time we got back home and I count that as a good movie.
By the way, if you are ever wanting a "smaller" film to be shown at your local theater it never hurts to either email the theater or to give a call and ask. Make sure your friends do the same. They need to be aware that there is, in fact, an audience for the indie/smaller film. And if it's something that really couldn't sustain a release in your area, but you're very passionate about seeing it on the big screen go through the cooperate side of the theater. As the local theaters aren't the ones doing the negotiations with the distributors over hard-drive rentals. If that theater has private screenings available the corporate liaison will be able to put in a request to the distributor of the film if it's not already listed on their approved movie list. It's not always 100% going to work, but if you don't ask it's going to be 100% no. As an aside, with the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes still on going with no end in sight, many studios will run out of "new" product to release. This means more re-releases of older films. You're going to see way more "anniversary" releases happening as well. So, requesting a smaller film that is a new release might actually have a higher chance to be released if requested.
People don’t talk enough about DEBS! I never understood how it was always left off of compilations in decades past. I’m glad people are remembering it more this year.
Saw it Labor Day. It was so funny and absurd and Hazel was probably my favorite. It was interesting getting a film today that touched on horrible stuff, took it way beyond "normal" and then somehow it came out funny. Like addressing S.A. "even the grey area" and then brushing it aside for P.J.'s selfish interest and motives.
As a non-binary, pansexual soul, I went in thinking this movie was just gonna be another basic gay bro story from the title. But the trailer had me intrigued-and damn, it didn’t disappoint! I just watched it, and I’m fully in my feelings. What really hit home is how these girls crafted their own sanctuary of sass and sisterhood in a world that couldn’t care less about the damage from relentless bullying and harassment. It’s the kind of unapologetic, in-your-face queer vibe I wish I had growing up. But beyond that, it’s a sultry celebration of loyalty, friendship, and love in their most raw, intoxicating forms. The cast and crew? Never heard of them before, but you better believe I’ll be stalking every one of them from here on out. Honestly, this film got under my skin in all the best ways-it’s been a hot minute since something had me this hooked. I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone craving something bold and unfiltered. And Amanda-damn, your style is fire! You just gained a loyal fan and subscriber. Keep serving up that vibe, babe. 🔥
This was such a fun watch. I went with one of my best queer friends to a locally owned theater and it was a blast. I laughed through the entire thing and it was cathartic in a way I can’t quite put my finger on.
The ending didn't have to go as hard as it did. I was surprised the box office numbers are so low as the theater I went to was fairly packed. Hoping it picks up steam.
busted the fuck out of my ankle walking out of the theater at the end and i still want to shake amandas hand for letting me know this movie exists it was so fucking good guys
emma is truly the one to watch for she knows how to do satire really well, bottoms is funny but also you can tell she put her entire soul and heart in it. i cant wait for her future projects!
Finally got to watch this yesterday as it came to amazon prime in the UK and it did not dissapoint! I’m already on my second rewatch. Hazel is my favourite, she’s so adorable and kind of crazy😂
I finally got around to watching Shiva Baby recently, and I loved it! It had such great representation. I really hope I find the time and money to see Bottoms in the theater.
I really wanna watch this movie. Hazel is played by Ruby Cruz, who I first saw on the Willow series that Disney gutted. If you like playful fantasy in the style of Knights Tale or D&D, I recommend finding it somewhere 👀
I feel like I was waiting forever for this movie to drop! It did not disappoint. It was so quippy and fun. And I liked the little callbacks to other media like "But I'm a Cheerleader" with the name of the diner and the waitress being named Natasha. My row in the theater was definitely singing along to Complicated. I really enjoyed it! CharliXCX is killing it with these movie soundtrack contributions lately as well.
Of course I'm fully down with the Avril placement; but the big question is this: Did they set the big final battle to "Ballroom Blitz"? ("Another one bites the dust" would also be acceptable.)
Your festivals hype for this really got me excited and I'm pleased to say I had a blast watching this. Was DYING at several moments, especially since Josie's gay pastor monologue killed me.
Me and my best friend saw this opening night here in Ireland and we cant get enought of it. we're going to see it again and again, when the dvd is out im buying it
Rented and watched Bottoms last night, then I couldn't resist immediately renting Shiva Baby as soon as it was over and watched that earlier today! Really loved both! Emma Seligman is such a fresh new voice in cinema!
When I saw the movie in theatres, I immediately saw the mascot’s dingaling hanging out but no one else there seemed to react to it and even when I watched reaction videos to it, no one pointed it out (it’s not even censored which makes me wonder if they missed it even in editing lol). It’s so funny how there’s all the background jokes that aren’t even subtle but you have to be keen to catch it
The commercials made me chuckle, but you never know when they were wasting their best jokes on the advertisement. It wasn't until I heard from you that the movie just plain slapped that I was like, okay, we're going to this. SO glad I did.
I just saw Bottoms and it was such a refreshing movie. This is why we need different povs and main characters in movies. I am so buying it when it comes out on dvd.
I totally went because of your rave review! I'm 43, my husband is 62. I thought he wasn't going to feel it all! We loved it! He told me he had such a great time. Thanks
One of my favorite things about this movie is theres SO much going on in the background. A lot of funny shit and also things that come into play later. Love it
Heathers and American Pie had a baby, and it's called Bottoms! Saw Bottoms and Talk to Me after your reviews, LOVED both, thank you! Also, I made a friend at work when she overheard me mentioning your channel in the lunchroom! Amanda the Jedi, bringing people together!
Hazel's autistic vibes were off the charts, and one of the many reasons I loved her the most (and related to her). Props to her actor, though truly everyone was SO good in this film! My sister and I just watched this movie for the first time, and I had never seen a trailer or anything. I was NOT prepared for the absurdist, dark humor of it, but it's what kept me watching. I, too, lost it when "Complicated" started playing. PERFECT song choice!!!! I love that my sister and I started out the evening thinking we were gonna watch a Fear Street movie but we decided we wanted humor, yet still ended the evening with sapphics & co fighting an enemy and there being dead teenagers everywhere XD
Best gay r-rated movie that isn't a porno. Truly funny. Also would like to know what evil inner city schools did the director and writers went to for this to be product of that experience.
I loved this movie. Your SXSW coverage for it had me ready to watch it, and I'm so happy I was able to. Not knowing a ton ahead of time made it just.. wow. I got the same "raunchy teen comedy vibe" without really being raunchy (or at least not as raunchy as most would be); I kept thinking more on the parody side (like Not Another Teen Movie). I had so many questions until the parody bit landed with me ("Why is the football team always in their uniforms? Why is that guy in a cage? Is that Marshawn Lynch?"). Also the mid-credits bloopers/other takes... awesome. I just figured the mascot wang was a scabbard for the sword (since the sword was... elsewhere at that point), but wow, yeah.
When I saw the girl with the stocking cap and red hair in this movie, my immediate thought was that she looked like a young Amanda the Jedi 😂. I even mentioned that in my review.
GAY LADY FIGHT CLUB for horny little weirdos
That's a two dollar sentence right there
Fun times! I hope you weren’t kidding about talking about D.E.B.S. soon-more fun times. 😊💜
"Horny little weirdos" yeah, that pretty much sums up middle and high school.
Wasn't Fight Club already pretty gay?

The Avril needle drop was amazing. I adored this movie.
How did the people at the premiere not sing a long to Complicated? I was a little upset that they didn't play the whole song.
I saw Bottoms for my bday, i loved it! Hilarious! Hazel was my fav overall 😂
I had the entire theater to myself (Weekday) and I sang Complicated lmao
Im absolutely heartbroken that this isnt getting a proper global release. I wouldve loved to go see it in the cinema with friends, it sounds so fun!
Am I the only one who thought Miles Fowler's character was going to be revealed to have the hots for Nicholas Galitzine?
Loved Ruby cruz in willow and really looking forward to this one
Nicholas did such a amazing job in the movie
This man has range
He deserves to be famous
“Yes, Hazel, let’s do terrorism.”
Movie quote of the year.
emma is truly the one to watch for she knows how to do satire really well, bottoms is funny but also you can tell she put her entire soul and heart in it. i cant wait for her future projects!
Finally got to watch this yesterday as it came to amazon prime in the UK and it did not dissapoint! I’m already on my second rewatch. Hazel is my favourite, she’s so adorable and kind of crazy😂
I've seen it three times now and every single time I left the theater with tear streaks on my face from laughing so hard
I wanted to go see this the other night and the last showing was at 4:30! Hoping for a later showing soon.
Love it
You'll be happy to hear the theater I saw it at in Milwaukee, Wisconsin erupted into laughter and applause when Complicated started.
This is actually the second movie you've gotten me to see in theaters. I really loved it, thanks for the rec
To me is in the same category as Booksmart and Do Revenge: wacky, hilarous, smart and queer. Absolutely brilliant!!!
D.E.B.S is easily one of my favourite movies as well, I just get so happy when ever I watch
15:41 I sung the WHOLE SONG during the movie - perfect needle drop
Best gay r-rated movie that isn't a porno. Truly funny. Also would like to know what evil inner city schools did the director and writers went to for this to be product of that experience.
evil inner city school😂😂😂😂❤
wait how could anyone not be like jamming out but also sad during that montage! IT'S AVRIL FREAKING LAVIGNE'S COMPLICATED
had to pause the video to head to theaters. so good. thank you
It was so good 💕! One my absolute favorites x3! I'm so glad we finally got this xD
I’m super disappointed that you don’t know that guy from the second Craft movie - where he is amazing and I loved him so much.
Marshawn is amazing in the Netflix improve murder mystery thing. Screw netflix, but that show did help show us how hilarious he is
When Complicated started playing my friend leaned over and excitedly reminded me that it's her dad's favorite song lol
this movie is genuinely my favorite of the year?? such a blast to watch and some genuinely beautiful wlw relationships (hii josiebel) 😭❤️
The best way I've been able to describe this movie is that it is a fever dream, but one with a tight script
I’m absolutely obsessed with Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennot. One of my life goals is to meet them and talk about movies.
the way that Emma did a really funny movie and with authenticity omg such an amazing film
Loooved it. I'm so glad they went there at the end-totally didn't expect that. I am looking forward to watching it again.
