The eternal struggle of not knowing what’s worse: going to see this alone or admitting to your friends that you want to see this
Lol
ha, my friend and i saw this movie in theaters, it's not that weird! plus, it'd be a fun movie to discuss over drinks/food afterwards.
You need better friends, I know exactly who to call to go see it 😅
Alone is better for stuff like this unless you have a friend with similar humor lol.
Ultimate level: Tell domina you want to see this.
I like how this is a flip on the usual powerful male CEO and his submissive kept mistress stereotype.
I read an article years ago by a dominatrix, and she described how this is generally the case. People who have to spend their whole career being in charge and commanding often want to do the exact opposite in their fantasy life. It's like escapism; suddenly they don't have to make decisions or control a situation.
@@FurTheWorkers yeah, that's it. It's not that people with powerful careers are the ones that can afford the services of a pro dommes more easily or something. I'm sure day workers are just not into being dominated.
@@LordAiniits probably both
Never heard of that stereotype. I feel like powerful CEO likes to be submissive is a much more common stereotype, lol.
@@illogical001in writing tropes it runs rampant
Man, fuck trying to "fix" your partner. Find somebody whose crazy matches your crazy.
And then find a good couples therapist, because, you're still both crazy.
I feel like you need to find a crazy therapist too. Just to make everything even 😂
I have that, and it's not all it's cracked up to be 😅 minus the couple therapist who we desperately need.
seeking professional help should be the default option on getting better, not having a partner to 'fix' you.
i think i just found my new bumble bio
Do crazy people ever believe they need help
I think what caught me most off guard was how weirdly wholesome the ending is
Yes it is so damn wholesome after the mindfuck of the past 60 minutes
@@AmandaTheJedi 8:45 And Tony Goldwyn who plays President Fitz on Scandal fits this abusive/ powerful romantic bad-boy boyfriend trope. He's the ONLY one I actually like because they're in politics where EVERYONE is doing bad things so him and Olivia are not outliers. Please watch Scandal
@@AmandaTheJedi This is what makes me want to see it the most: the fact that someone finally thought about the fact that dommes and subs are still humans, not just walking fetishes. They can still have feelings, vulnerabilities, fall in love... aside from Love and Leashes, there's NOTHING in the vast romcom wasteland that has spoken to me before.
I read it as a fairytale
Not wholesome at all homeboy got manipulated the entire time if you think she actually loved him your delusional
Honestly... with how Covid was, I'm surprised we didn't get more movies like this. Locked off locations, with tiny casts, small budgets, and small crews? Would've been perfect things to do during that weird transition between the end of lockdown and where we are now.
These kinds of films are hard to do, because it requires highly skilled directors and a well written script, two things that are not that common, sadly.
@@LightningRaven42 Which is fair. I wasn't expecting it to suddenly be churned out at the rate that regular ones are. It's that there were practically none.
I would have been very interested in this had it happened. It would have been fascinated
But there were a few - goodbye Leo grant is one that comes to mind. Then the one about the filming of a movie during lockdown with Karen Gillan?
Hellbender is another one.
Something about Rebecca's unhinged energy along with how she moves and speaks just totally won me over. It's the first time I've ever seen this mix of intimidating and adorable
10:16 Amanda is having the whole Dean Pelton from Community "This Better Not Awaken Anything In Me" moment LMAO
😂😂😂😂
Jeff Bezos is paying someone to dress as his mother and yell at him and they’ll him how disappointed they are with him while he scrubs floors and cries.
Margaret Qualley is an amazing actor. Her performance in Maid was captivating. She expresses emotion so well in her eyes, the tension in her face, and her way of talking that comes across as subtle but ends up being so powerful in her overall performance. From these clips it seems she delivers that same phenomenal performance in this movie. I might have to watch it because of her!
Maid is one of the greatest miniseries I've ever seen. And all of it is because of Margaret's amazing subtle performance, I absolutely enjoyed it. I probably watch like every once a year because its really that good
Her performance in Death Stranding was phenomenal alongside Norman Reedus.
Still providing content while at tiff, she is a M A C H I N E
The existence of a safe word in this movie? I love it. I let out a sigh of relief. I think this is exactly… what I needed in life? Idk I should go back to therapy probably.
You have no problem with the nonconsensual recording, extortion, manipulation…… but you felt good coming out of it because there’s a safe word?? Lol
@@maddieb.4282 you misunderstood. I said I like the safeword. I said nothing about rest of the movie, ma’am. Please don’t twist my words, that’s very dangerous on the internet… “lol”
i love this movie, i was genuinely like "aw this is so cute actually" by the end, completely bypassing the complete mind fuckery that happened before
Once she said, “ God I love to see a professional at work”. I was all in for the rest of this review! God bless America 😂😂❤
You're right. Filming is massive violation of trust. What script writers don't understand is that BDSM, domination etc. stuff are bit like extreme sport of roller coasters for intimacy/sexuality. You make these things because it turns you on, but there are strict rules to ensure mental comfort and safety. Actually people who are into BDSM or domination are more strict about respecting boundaries than others. It's like my friend who's rock climber takes about preparation far more than me when casually hiking.
I hear what your saying, but the way I view it, bdsm in movies and books are the scripted fantasies and desires people have involving bdsm. They’re not intended as a reflection of real life bdsm best practices. People shouldn’t mimic this with an unconsenting partner irl, but in a movie? It’s just another avenue to safely explore taboos.
There are plenty of fantasies played out in the kink community that would be unsafe and criminal if informed consent wasn’t in play. That’s why they’re stigmatized by general society. The rules are in place to keep real people safe but this is fiction. The rules can bend.
This movie is very reminiscent of Secretary (2002). Both are love stories with therapeutic dom-play and about finding a way to play all the time. I love em both!
I would love to see more movies that play out dominatrix work like this being made. Getting the proper sources, the right actors, and opening up your mind can show you that dominatrix work can not only be crazy and sexy, but fun and romantic
I watched this months ago, never have i been so invested in a film with just two people and how much it caught me off guard even half-way through it.
1. with all I really knew about the film pre-this video, I've assumed that it's probably akin to Piercing (2018): more or less a two-hander, dialogue-driven, set in a hotel room, with a sex worker, centralizing power dynamics
2. I was like "where do I know that actor from?" looked it up, and he's in On the Count of Three but thought "I don't think that's the ONLY thing I know him from..." and. and HE IS the guy in Piercing
Christopher Abbott, you have found a very particular niche
Went into this movie knowing literally nothing, not even genre, with my friends. Needless to say that was an interesting experience
I don't think I could survive the cringe myself, but I'm really glad to have learned about this story and to know it exists.
She wanted him to realize that he wanted her and needed her. Meanwhile she also wanted him and the way he made her feel, in control, dominating. She concluded that base on that they matched each other. She didn’t have segs with for him but because she wanted him.
Kept waiting for a reveal at the end that they had actually stuck to the script the whole time..
This video is unhinged, this movie sounds unhinged, I'm in.
Is it too much of a dad joke to say this channel is a sanctuary?
Nice!
No. It is not. You are only speaking the truth. 😂
Maybe but I absolutely agree
A sanctuaryyyyyy, my sanctuaryyyyy, yaaaah~
Where feaaaaars and liiiiies
Melt awaaa-aaa-aaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyaaaaaayyyy~🎵
No such thing as "too much"of a dad joke
this is succession to me
I can totally imagine Roman in a situation like this, he’d love it
Alot of times I watch your commentary then go watch the movie. But for Talk to Me and Sanctuary I had to see them first. Thank you for these recommendations!!
This has become my second favorite bdsm film. First will always be Secretary with James Spader lol
I loved this movie and have been waiting for you to cover it! So glad you did. I hope more people watch and enjoy this. The actors are incredible. I feel like this is the type of movie that should be getting oscars for best acting, instead of the now stale typical ‘Oscar bait’ type movies. Although I’m not sure I would call it breezy as you did. In some parts I could almost feel how sick and desperate he felt and at others how heart broken and hurt she was when he was lying to himself about how he really felt for her. Just incredible! This term gets thrown around a lot but this was truly an emotional rollercoaster.
Ooh, I actually got chills with the 'She's in charge now' part!
Same! That's such an iconic line
I watched this movie with my boyfriend and oh lordy it was so absurd and unhinged I was glued to the screen and laughing my ass off. 10/10. I have no shame, I am recommending it to all my weirdo friends. Rollercoaster from start to finish
The way I went, "Eh, I think I'll skip this one" until this review...
Coming back from having watched the movie. I absolutely adored the camera work in this movie. One because it's incredibly fun when there's stuff going on in the movie but also the intimacy that is at play is quite appreciated.
It's insane but at least much better then 50 Shades of Grey & 365 Days.
The only Sanctuary I know is the one with Samantha Carter from Stargate SG-1, Jack the Ripper, Nikola Tesla as a vampire and CGI
2 things that come to mind with this.
1 is this is that one couple you know, they are both extra and break up weekly but will end up married and happy until they get too normal.
2. Reminds me of Secret Diary of A Call Girl with Billy Piper. I feel like Amanda may like that show, at least the first 2 seasons😅
Is this really a romcom ? To me it sounds more like a psychological thriller but i’m not knowledgeable enough to define a movie’s genre. Anyways, since the female protagonist is a dom I need to see that movie. And don’t worry dear, we’re all cringe 🤭
Oh it is, that’s why it’s a secret rom com
@@AmandaTheJedi Now I need Timothee Chalamet and Margaret Qualley to act together. They're brilliant and look like twins
Funny how this fucked up romcom about a dominatrix and her client has a more genuine romance than whatever Twilight, 50 Shades, 365 days, After and every other trashy "romance" movie franchises had tried to do in this past decade.
Nothing about what goes on in this movie is genuine. She torments him for an entire night because of her own fucked up mentality. And the end could very well be her succeeding in convincing him to give her a position as CEO.
@@JayJoeVid4EVERagreed. The end was a bit much, giving a 185 million dollar company to someone else with no leverage? She could even kick him out of her house if she so wished.
no
Ok, hear my head canon out...She's the daughter of Mr. Grey and Lee in Secretary.
I love this
SPOILERS:
I did not like the ending scene in the elevator. I get that it makes sense for her to take over the company, but I cared more about the characters than the whole business plot. "I am nothing like you and I don't have to be" would've been the perfect closing line for the film.
While I felt overall 'meh' about the movie, I think the ending works A LOT better if you decide to live in a reality where Rebecca and Hal are actually a husband and wife (not dominatrix and bitch boy), and the entire movie we watch is a fetish role playing thing they regularly do to spice up their marriage.
So the "them being in love and giving her the company" was always what they were doing, but they created this insane roleplay to get to that ending. If you take the film at face value, yeah that rom com ending was a load of crap.
@@IAmTurboman your interpretation makes the movie so much better
I thought that line was his happy ending and the elevator one was her happy ending.
@@IAmTurboman well, irl if she wasn't his wife and she tried to take over company by blackmail while being random girl turning on rich people for money she would end up waiting for identification.
@@Petaurista13 that's what I didn't like in the end, it was too unrealistic, I don't care if it's a movie, the ending didn't fit their relationship or what happened before, if at the end she surprisingly turned out to be his wife this whole time then yes that would have been a better story and ending
i was scrolling quickly and didn't fully register the thumbnail, so i thought this was gonna be a midnight sun situation for 50 shades
We already have that.
You really sold me this movie 😂😂
Finally. Secretary for ME
I just watched Sanctuary and I love it so much! Ohmygosh! The ending is beautiful! Perfect! 100/10❤
Your thumbnail always sells me.
I’m such a sub apparently that even the short bits I get to see of this dom woman in the video are driving me crazy
Edit: the longer this video went the more I regretted commenting this
I cackled a little at your expense, sorry!
But why? 😄
For me it was the psychological domination elements and Rebecca's unique way of taking charge
This definitely sounds like a movie I’d enjoy, for some reason deranged romances really interest me! Can’t wait to check it out
Thanks for the rec, I stopped the video to watch it and loved it.
it really is so funny how you end up wanting to root for them by the finale! they're just so perfect for each other!!! it makes want to go insane! and the actors!!! god they are just so talented. the twists and turns that legitimately catch you off guard! i need to go and watch this movie again. i need to own this movie, it's been months since I saw it but i can't stop thinking about it
Why do these movie be wanting us to connect with rich people?
Saw this with my bestie after Spider-Verse, and we had an absolute blast!
To clarify, we saw Across the Spider-Verse on Friday, then Sanctuary on Saturday. We didn't see them the same day, but still a very funny double feature
Well it's not the weirdest combo of things ever watched back to back but it's up there
So glad you finally made this video! Sanctuary is my favorite of the year so far.
Am I the only guy who saw Elvis the alien on the thumbnail
This is Don’t Bully Me Nagatoro-San mixed with Fifty Shades and I don’t know how to feel about it.
This was so enjoyable to watch! Delightful.
The thumbnail already sold me, but thanks for the review anyway.
Edit: Wrote "nut" instead of "but", which was an accident, I swear.
Favorite rom-com of 2023 bar none 😅
I TRULY TRULY NEED TO SEE THIS! And THANK YOU for telling me about it. I need something like this in my life right now.
Have you been growing out your hair more than usual? It looks a little different than it used to but it looks fabulous. It frames your cheek bones so well.
We need more content from you!
Thank you for this video! I'm a pervy little weirdo that loved this movie.
Amanda, have you ever seen Love and Leashes? Korean BDSM film. It's so wholesome. Very good, and a romcom too😁
Ooohh I liked that one!!
Your commentary makes me laugh so much 😂😂 I definitely need to see this film
Aweeee the endinggggg😭😭 that’s like kinda cute omg
I’m happily intrigued. Gonna research for CEO purposes
"Let me know if you made it through..." AMANDA you missed a whole ass opportunity for a cringey pun! What is happening?! (Let me know if you finished...) 😂
Yea! New Amanda video!
I honestly think knowing the ending to this going in can be very helpful in enjoying it as opposed to just dealing with all that tension. Depends on what you're looking for.
Hey Amanda !! I really appreciate your work . Can you make a video on the new after movie 2023 ? Please.
Thanks for gushing about this film, it's so fun to get your take.
Just saw it today after being interested for awhile, and it was such a wild ride between the two. It was weirdly sweet after all, with a positive message about accepting yourself, but a little messed up with what they agree to call him in the end. Aim a little higher, my dude. Maybe call yourself a Support class.
The early clues about her reveals later were smart, and containing all this drama in one hotel room plus the hallway was slickly done.
So much of this….sounds like a horror movie? What? Lmao
But financial domination is a real thing and that’s what this sounds like, though, uh, I don’t know if this is done very ethically lol
Oh absolutely
I just realized you haven't reviewed Love & Leash (at least that I can tell). I think you might like it.
I just saw Christopher Abbott playing the absolute worst human being in the lesbian period piece The World To Come. Great performances all around, not just from him. Too bad that I really hated the ending.
Does this movie have a chance at Oscars 2024 since it's actual theatrical release was in May 2023? Or is it forgotten about because it was at TIFF last year? I feel like this movie deserves nominations at least for best screenplay, score, actor, and actress.
Absolutely loved this one, wish I had gone in knowing nothing so that first reveal of their arrangement could have been even better
All you had to say when you mentioned this movie last year was that it's Christopher Abbott and Margaret Qualley co-starring and I was sold. Two of the best actors around right now. Then you added that its a pervy thriller movie and yea I sought this one out asap. It was great.
LOL....i recieved a call, while i was watching this clip and paused right at 1:25 minutes in, the face its healing, like the moment i wake up and ask myself, why do humans need to do things to enjoy their day.....gold
Please, please, please do Culpa Mia (my fault) on prime ❤
this reminds me of the messed up but kinda sweet fanfics i would read on wattpad and ao3 in middle school. it’s always the ‘wealthy business man who’s into bdsm’ trope. every god damn time.
I watched this after hearing you mention it so much and it was the best movie I saw all year. Immediately made a friend watch it with me.
So it’s modern Secretary? It sounds like modern Secretary.
I am only less than half way in but let me say this: I just realised that this can absolutely be a story that the guy kills the woman when she tries to expose him, but the writer decided to go another route and I am still not sure how I feel about this😅
Amanda's last year favorite is my favorite this year. So far. Such a great blind watch.
Thank you for introducing this to me. I had never heard of it, and I loved it.
okay I gotta say this Amanda you look especially gorgeous in this video! Maybe bcz you are so happy talking about this that you look radiant 😍
Oh dear lord. I had youtube turned up to 1.75 from another video and Amanda, you always talk fast, but damn this was more than I could handle 🤣
PSA - don't use a cotton swab as a sound
This seems like my kind of romcom😂😂😂
I'm sorry but black mail and threatening revenge porn. Also threatening him with a knife didn't come off as Dom stuff it comes off like actual abuse. If this was reversed I feel like it would be hated just as much as 50 shades.
Same. I didn't find any of it funny when Amanda was explaining what happens in the movie. It made me feel eek.
I couldn't stop silent laughing at this. That's one wild movie
I love this, I’m so into this dynamic😊
I think it's not that clear if she actually goes "off script" - it could be interpreted that the whole thing is a part of the fantasy.
Regardless, awesome movie!
I have not seen yoi so happy in so long!!! You look radiant.
This sounds great, really intelligent and nuanced but it reminded me of a similar play called Venus in Fur and if you haven't seen that then you're in for a treat. The subj matter is the same whereas the plot is not but its wickedly clever and Mind Fing. I hope this one comes to netflix, its my best shot at seeing new movies, thanks for the review!
I never read it because I can't stand straight porn but I heard in Venus in Furs the woman is just a straight up abusive asshole which would be the exact opposite of the dominatrix in this film.
@@elecrom_9757 Venus in Fur and Venus in Furs are different. One is an old book and the other is a play about an adaptation of the book. It’s a play within a play thing
G-damn. I'm gonna go watch this now, aren't I?
OMG! I NEED TO SEE this! 😄
"if you are into that kind of thing" ... yes, well...
Did you like Secretary with Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader? Sanctuary seems like it might hit pretty similar. Gotta love a pervy, wacky RomCom.
I feel like half the battle of pulling off weird... Is not pretending to be anything else.
I’ve been wanting to see this, mostly because of Christopher Abbott. The plot sounded interesting & more unique than the trailers I’ve been seeing lately
Watched it thanks to you and absolutely loved it!
I need your take ok the OP live action show, please and thank you hehe
