I loved this movie because it dares to ask the question "What if the thing standing in your way isn't necessarily just homophobia, but the fact that you're genuinely off-putting and your vibes are way off?"
i love queer media, almost no matter who's playing who. i love to see actors represented in their roles but to expect that only out queer actors to take parts is asking a lot of performers in a time were it is so unsafe to be queer. and with Wayne Brady recently coming out as pansexual, it's just a really great reminder that we never know. it doesn't matter how long someone's in the spot light. no actor owes us being out.
The “what’s the sexuality of the actors” thing is interesting because I remember reading an interview with Viggo Mortensen where he defended playing a gay man, saying basically, “You don’t know what my sexuality is. I could be anything, and demanding that only openly queer people play queer roles is essentially demanding that all queer actors out themselves.” Which sounded like a really cringe, straight thing to say, but also seemed like it made sense, and it’s always stuck in my brain cause of that.
see where I hear that and immediately go "hmm, I wonder if he's NOT totally straight". Which, I mean, it could equally just be that he's aware enough of the issues and his queer allies that he realizes why it's stupid, but also with what I do know about Viggo Mortensen, I doubt he particularly enjoys labels.
It actually sounds very honest and fair to me, and also- it totally sounds like Vigo wasn't REALLY hiding his queer identity, no matter what his life and relationship choices are🩷
Totally agree with his statements, and recent events (such as Kit Conner being forced to out himself) have revealed to me that we can’t limit queer roles to queer people because we don’t know who is queer. Viggo could be, or he could be pointing out that if he was or was not, backlash would be forcing him to publicize a private matter. Queer people deserve privacy. As well, I believe everyone deserves to be able to experience queerness even if they ultimately decide they are not queer. Film allows this.
Obviously historical/important queer roles should be saved for queer actors, but if ALL queer roles should be played by ONLY queer actors, it's like saying straight characters should only be played by straight actors. We should never pigeonhole someone due to their sexuality, and that goes both ways

As a nonbinary lesbian who went to this movie with my two queer friends, we were laughing our asses off. We saw the movie opening week in a FULL theater of queer friend groups and it was SUCH an incredibly uniting and delightful experience. The crowd erupted with laughter at certain jokes, letting everyone feel comfortable and surrounded by fellow queer people enjoying the humor FINALLY WRITTEN FOR US!!!!! As an aspiring queer filmmaker, this movie really was HUGE. My friends and I left the theater with our fists pounding in the air shouting "CINEMA IS BACK BAYBEY!"
The way queer people speak to each other being more edgy and gritty than straight ppl assume is so real, I've definitely seen straight people's jaws drops when they hear the way my friends and I speak to each other

i relate to ayo. she definitely hinted at the fact that she isn't exactly straight and knowing the fact that she comes from a stricter religious background i understand her frustrations and fears as they are the same feelings i feel whenever the more religious part of my family comes to visit me. however, i also understand that a lot of queer people want to see themselves represented beyond the story told on screen and wanna see queer people actually included in the project's making.

"You may be a black republican, but you're the smartest out of all of us." Loved this movie. I really love the idea of making a film that is explicitly (but not panderingly) feminist, about women who are exploiting feminism to get laid. To me it felt like an inversion of the "Girl at a Bar" SNL sketch, or the teen sex comedies where a male character will be SUPER into women's health issues because women will appreciate that and reward him with sex (and maybe it doesn't work and he "grows" and gets the girl that way). Like they're kind of reclaiming that trope and doing it expertly, but more gay, more aware of how shitty that behavior actually is, and all the while making a feminist point that the characters are too sex obsessed to actually notice. I'm sure I'm overanalyzing it and they were probably like "hey this would be funny and stupid let's do that," but it's really smart stupidity. Also Ayo Edibiri's rant about her heterosexual Christian future and her son Hezekiah was the hardest I've laughed in years.
I definitely feel like you don’t need to be gay/queer or out as gay/queer to play a gay or sapphic character. If the writing and direction is authentically queer, I think a person of any sexuality could play a gay or sapphic character. And I think that it wouldn’t be right for actors to be forced to come out in order to get a role. As much as I love people being out and being representation for the younger people, it’s a personal thing for a lot of people and coming out in the industry can be a big deal.
Plus, omg. That opens up a very dangerous possibility of only straight actors being allowed to play straight characters. It's not like actors HAVE to be attracted to their love interest

I had so much fun when I saw this movie in theaters. I think I just loved seeing teenage lesbians be horny idiots because I was a horny idiot when I was in high school! I’m probably still a horny idiot! And I never get to see that on screen because so many queer films are sad and serious. We don’t get to see queer characters and their individual relationships with sex and desire laid out in fun ways very often.
You touched on the reality of how queer people talk to each other and how much edgier it is than how it's portrayed in most media and I think it's also worth drawing comparisons to how the queer community (and especially trans and nb people) have been smeared as hypersensitive, particularly in the past decade. We're no more or less averse to dark and offensive humor than any other group of people, but we're constantly called snowflakes for expecting to be treated in a way that acknowledges and respects our humanity and autonomy
I also appreciated that Brittany (PJ's crush) had that moment of confirming she was straight while affirming the intimacy of female platonic friendship. Even at the end during the kiss at the game, her reaffirming this rather than somehow having all the characters learn they are a lesbian or bi felt real. I know I (as a lesbian) have had to contend with the fact that throughout high school I had incredibly intense and intimate relationships with other girls that I (who didn't at the time know I was a lesbian) certainly had a different expectation for than the other party. Some of them, like me, did find out later they were bi or lesbian, but others were just straight and saw what I imagined as romantic love as platonic. Learning how to understand that and appreciate the platonic love they did give me and knowing that was enough took time. And I appreciate a glimpse of that with PJ and Brittany
I saw so many people give criticism during their reactions that Brittany was leading her on but… if we rewatch it i think it’s proof that the point the writers were trying to make is valid, Brittany says herself in the movie that her identity is literally attached to Isabel, she doesn’t have very many friendships or emotional substance, and just because the few times we see her growing emotionally and in her relationships is with PJ doesn’t mean it’s romantic or sexual. She said she would make her a bracelet, she owns a jewelry business so of course she would probably give out freebies to her friends, especially one she’s building a friendship with, she invites her over to hang out and study, something many girls straight or gay do all the time, she engages in playful banter, the same way she always has with everyone else throughout the film. Through PJ’s eyes, of course she’s looking into all these behaviors, shes had a several year long infatuation with her, it makes sense but to see so many people say Brittany was leading her on is proof that we need more films like this!
To answer your question, i loved it! As a bi girl who was a very horny teen (lol), i appreciated having my s3xual desires validated because more often than not women's wants are made to appear so bland when we can actually be pretty intense.
Oh such a strong point about the way Queer women's dialogue is portayed vs reality! I grew up within Lesbian community with an out Lesbian mom and one strong cultural element of that community that i think has informed who i am as an adult is that "edgy" gritty humour.
I’m 31 and only realized I was bi at 26 and started dating or openly having sex with women/people of other genders and when I was a teen I would have loved to have movies like these. Bottoms had me doubled over laughing, I saw it in theaters twice with my friends. I want to see more of these silly fun queer stories get told and not only the ones with heartbreak and death and struggle.
I genuinely couldn’t care less what the sexuality of the lead actors is. The director is queer, plenty of the actors are, and most importantly, it’s probably my new favorite queer movie and I wouldn’t want it any different than it is

I’ve stopped caring about “gay roles for gay actors😡” once I stopped using Twitter, noticed queer baiting has declined and finally (and most importantly) realizing not everything is about me lol Cuz at first what frustrated me is seeing presumably or self identified cishets not only playing the gay roles but also act stupid in interviews just to get fame and money while simultaneously seeming like they’re making fun of lgbt ppl, they can leave the interview or finish the movie and live their happy cishet life while I could be killed or jailed any minute, I was taking the anger and frustration on them when I shouldn’t have. But like I said, I realized not everything is about me and I’m just one person in a planet of 8 billions. It’s ok for others to not feel like they want to come out, or not feel rushed to do so. Or even be cishet. And it’s even sad to think some can’t possibly come out.
As a gay woman, yeah the movie felt self-aware and very camp. The two leads get publicly outed and shamed for their sinister intentions to start the club. PJ is written intentionally horrible and doesn’t get her girl but apologizes and begrudgingly recognizes her mistakes and gets an another, unexpected girl. 100/10 movie, can’t believe it was filmed in 27 days and got denied filming locations. Hoping they’re able to make another project together
I’m sapphic and saw it at a drive in with my girlfriend. We thought it was silly and interesting! I appreciated that it didn’t care about being realistic. I also appreciated that Hazel was very autistic coded (when they took everything literally) and that’s what caused some of the plot points with explosives.
As a lesbian I felt so happy. It’s happy to see a movie that was willing to push up against the boundaries of female sexuality, while simultaneously being honest. I’m glad they didn’t k*ll our gays 😚💗✨
Also keep in mind this came around the time after the SAG AFTRA strikes started and they had limited movie theater releases. I saw so many social media comments saying the nearest theater playing it was an hour or more away. I think it was fantastic they were able to make as much as they did considering all these factors as well!!
I think the recent """coming out""" of sufjan stevens is a good barometer for this. Clearly he wasn't near any closests for his life, and a lot of music had pretty clear queer subtext. But at the same time he chose to keep his personal life private, and i think that is something we have to respect.

I don't really have a hat in the ring when it comes to discussions about when people should come out, though I strongly agree with you that it should be done when the person is safe. But I have long felt that we as a society are waaaaaay too invested in the private lives of celebrities, and in particular young celebrities. I have never understood the obsession with knowing all the minute details about their lives, especially the details they want to keep private. It's like people forget that they are real people, and deserve the same consideration as anyone else. If they don't want to share, then it's none of our damn business. On a side note, I kind of went through the opposite experience as the viewers you mentioned that drop you when they find out you're trans. I forget how I stumbled onto your channel (I think the BDSMer's take on 50 Shades video?), but I remember being thrilled when I found out you were trans. I'm Christian, raised in the Bible Belt, living in the Bible Belt, with several of my closest family members being trans or enby, and I was clueless. Finding out you were trans and openly talked about your experiences is why I subscribed. I feel sorry for the people who are too brainwashed to realize how informative your content can be.

I LOVED Bottoms! I watched it with my wife on my honeymoon weekend and we almost pissed ourselves laughing. One thing I love is the exclusion of queer sex scenes. Like it didn’t feel like a PornHub category and I loved that! It was so damn gay and so fucking silly 🤣🤣🤣 it just felt like looking back on my high school memories with my best friend. I want more fun, weird gay movies!

Back when I was a youngster, my entire queer experience was through the movies, because there were consequences to being open in my real life. Regardless of whether I enjoyed the film (not as much as I wanted to), I do applaud that this film was made, that it had a wider release, and that the gay high school experience is depicted as so much more open than my time. I am seeing more progress on that front than I ever thought I would see in my lifetime (especially being a resident of regressive Florida), and it is so encouraging to see.

I was so so excited when the trailer dropped earlier in the year, and am incredibly thankful that it didn’t disappoint me! Truly the most fun I’ve had watching a movie in a long time, and I totally agree with your assessment of its realism in how the characters interact with each other and joke about things. They committed so fully on every aspect-the comedy, the stunts and violence, the characters, the totally ridiculous satirical setting-and I think that’s what made it so successful. I literally went to see it in theaters twice and have been making friends watch it

Regarding the discussion of whether actors need to be out queer people to play queer characters, i will say that not only do i not want actors to be forced to out themselves for a role, but as someone who doesn't have a set label i feel comfortable in, i find the idea kind of exclusionary
Loved this film! I think queer people should be able to have media where the characters can be terrible and raunchy and we still root for them! It’s always Sunny has been on the air for like 15 seasons and it’s wildly beloved! To me, this was the sapphics’ it’s always Sunny moment and that’s great!
Bottoms was sooooo good it was so fun to laugh through the entire thing in theater with my friend! Also It’s crazy to me that people could watch Ayo & Rachel’s work and question them or be unsatisfied without how unapologetic they are… like they don’t have to say the words if you know you know and it is really crazy to me after how many young actors/musicians have literally been not just pressured but genuinely harassed and bullied into coming out to feel like we need them to explicitly confirm anything to be happy with the movie! I mean asking the question once sure but they gave their answer lol that’s that
For me, I care a lot less about the particular sexual identity of the actors and a lot more about whether they're telling a good story that's true to queer experience. And generally you're a lot more likely to get that if the writers are queer!
My local Cinemark only played Bottoms for like 2 weeks. I dunno if that was the norm for other regions but it seemed weird to me. I ended up missing it and having to wait to stream it. Really really enjoyed it though!
The hijacking of the term "queerbaiting" to apply it to real people gotta be the most toxic shit I have seen in a while. I think you said it elsewhere in another video but especially since sexuality can be very fluid and therefore change throughout one's life (like the real life Piper who is fictionalised in Orange is the New Black, to name just one example) makes it so very screwed up to force someone at the age of 18 to basically set it in stone, not to mention jeopardise their whole career and possibly endangering themselves in the current political climate in the US. That being said, I haven't seen the movie but I'm looking forward to see a silly lesbian sex comedy!
I never felt totally connected to heterosexual media as a queer woman. I never found it relatable. from how the characters act / their priorities / even their gesturing and speaking style never spoke to me but something about queer media always feels so much more magnetizing maybe because I can see myself represented in the characters like straight guys do watching 90% of all films ever. yeah bottoms is campy and goofy but so am I.
Idk why but I was kind of turned off from this movie when I first heard about it. From the trailer i was afraid it was just one of those films that all it does is just take straight roles/stereotypes and just replace them with queer people so all it is just repackaged bs and pandering. But your review means a lot to me especially as as a recently come out bisexual and as someone who wants to focus on consuming queer media by queer people. I’m def gonna go watch it rn!
I'm fascinated, because I saw a trailer and was immediately like 'ew', since it looked like a gross stereotype filled mess. I probably won't watch it anyway, as I'm not into high school based media, but there could certainly be discourse on whether this film was done dirty by the marketing team or not - wouldn't be the first time.

as a sapphic woman, i enjoyed this movie a lot! i thought it was hilarious and loved the soundtrack and cinematography. though i did feel a few plot points kind of got pushed to the side or completely forgotten about by the end. but i agree that we need more silly gay movies! and i feel these kind of movies get held to a higher standard by a non lgbt audience, even when its obviously campy and meant to be silly. so for what bottoms was trying to be, it was perfect and i loved it!
I absolutely L O V E D this film! Think i watched the trailer cos Ayo caught my eye & seen her in a few things & think she’s great & with Bear gonna be her launch into bigger things. Loved the trailer. I took my sister to see it & she had NO idea aboot what the film was. She loved it too! It’s just straight up funny! So cleaver in its story telling & style. Elements of satire & a bit hyper feel & surreal (I felt there was at least 1 or 2 references to Not Another Teen Movie… but that could just be me) And I can’t relate to really any of this film. I’m a 38 straight cis white male… & my sister is cis straight too (for the most part?? We’ve never fully talked about it… going from her previous relationships…)… just took her to see a great film. Spend some sibling time together

When I heard that Ayo was from a very religious background that hit so hard because not being able to be fully out to my family due to that is super real but this and other films like it are a great path to take just a load off some days. Life can’t always be serious. We’re ugly and untalented too
Your comments on the way the movie reflected irl gay conversation really put into words one of my favourite things about the movie! As a teen bisexual, with a friend group of mostly bisexuals and lesbians i really felt like they captured the kind of humour we use on a day to day basis. The movie also definitely captured the horniness which i love. Not all young queer people are confused, conflicted and afraid of admitting their desires; some of us are very open about our queerness (when we feel safe to do so). This has definitely become one of my favourite movies. Its just so fun.
I really enjoyed this film! couldn't catch it in theaters but bought it for on demand streaming the minute it was available. For me a queer character being played by a cis straight actor doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the media, but when it is a queer actor, it's does feel special/ is an added bonus not lost on me. As a bisexual asian american, finding out the actress who plays Josie's love interest, Isabel (played by Havana Rose Liu), is actually pansexual was cool to see and made me love the character of Isabel even more.
I think this might be the funniest film I've seen this year. Maybe for a few years. Cannot wait to see the next project from Rachel Sennott and Emma Seligman

i love queer media, almost no matter who's playing who. i love to see actors represented in their roles but to expect that only out queer actors to take parts is asking a lot of performers in a time were it is so unsafe to be queer. and with Wayne Brady recently coming out as pansexual, it's just a really great reminder that we never know. it doesn't matter how long someone's in the spot light. no actor owes us being out.

The “what’s the sexuality of the actors” thing is interesting because I remember reading an interview with Viggo Mortensen where he defended playing a gay man, saying basically, “You don’t know what my sexuality is. I could be anything, and demanding that only openly queer people play queer roles is essentially demanding that all queer actors out themselves.” Which sounded like a really cringe, straight thing to say, but also seemed like it made sense, and it’s always stuck in my brain cause of that.

Which, I mean, it could equally just be that he's aware enough of the issues and his queer allies that he realizes why it's stupid, but also with what I do know about Viggo Mortensen, I doubt he particularly enjoys labels.

Totally agree with his statements, and recent events (such as Kit Conner being forced to out himself) have revealed to me that we can’t limit queer roles to queer people because we don’t know who is queer.
Viggo could be, or he could be pointing out that if he was or was not, backlash would be forcing him to publicize a private matter. Queer people deserve privacy.
As well, I believe everyone deserves to be able to experience queerness even if they ultimately decide they are not queer. Film allows this.
Obviously historical/important queer roles should be saved for queer actors, but if ALL queer roles should be played by ONLY queer actors, it's like saying straight characters should only be played by straight actors. We should never pigeonhole someone due to their sexuality, and that goes both ways

As a nonbinary lesbian who went to this movie with my two queer friends, we were laughing our asses off. We saw the movie opening week in a FULL theater of queer friend groups and it was SUCH an incredibly uniting and delightful experience. The crowd erupted with laughter at certain jokes, letting everyone feel comfortable and surrounded by fellow queer people enjoying the humor FINALLY WRITTEN FOR US!!!!! As an aspiring queer filmmaker, this movie really was HUGE. My friends and I left the theater with our fists pounding in the air shouting "CINEMA IS BACK BAYBEY!"
The way queer people speak to each other being more edgy and gritty than straight ppl assume is so real, I've definitely seen straight people's jaws drops when they hear the way my friends and I speak to each other

i relate to ayo. she definitely hinted at the fact that she isn't exactly straight and knowing the fact that she comes from a stricter religious background i understand her frustrations and fears as they are the same feelings i feel whenever the more religious part of my family comes to visit me. however, i also understand that a lot of queer people want to see themselves represented beyond the story told on screen and wanna see queer people actually included in the project's making.

Loved this movie. I really love the idea of making a film that is explicitly (but not panderingly) feminist, about women who are exploiting feminism to get laid. To me it felt like an inversion of the "Girl at a Bar" SNL sketch, or the teen sex comedies where a male character will be SUPER into women's health issues because women will appreciate that and reward him with sex (and maybe it doesn't work and he "grows" and gets the girl that way). Like they're kind of reclaiming that trope and doing it expertly, but more gay, more aware of how shitty that behavior actually is, and all the while making a feminist point that the characters are too sex obsessed to actually notice. I'm sure I'm overanalyzing it and they were probably like "hey this would be funny and stupid let's do that," but it's really smart stupidity.
Also Ayo Edibiri's rant about her heterosexual Christian future and her son Hezekiah was the hardest I've laughed in years.
I definitely feel like you don’t need to be gay/queer or out as gay/queer to play a gay or sapphic character. If the writing and direction is authentically queer, I think a person of any sexuality could play a gay or sapphic character. And I think that it wouldn’t be right for actors to be forced to come out in order to get a role. As much as I love people being out and being representation for the younger people, it’s a personal thing for a lot of people and coming out in the industry can be a big deal.
Plus, omg. That opens up a very dangerous possibility of only straight actors being allowed to play straight characters. It's not like actors HAVE to be attracted to their love interest

I had so much fun when I saw this movie in theaters. I think I just loved seeing teenage lesbians be horny idiots because I was a horny idiot when I was in high school! I’m probably still a horny idiot! And I never get to see that on screen because so many queer films are sad and serious. We don’t get to see queer characters and their individual relationships with sex and desire laid out in fun ways very often.

You touched on the reality of how queer people talk to each other and how much edgier it is than how it's portrayed in most media and I think it's also worth drawing comparisons to how the queer community (and especially trans and nb people) have been smeared as hypersensitive, particularly in the past decade. We're no more or less averse to dark and offensive humor than any other group of people, but we're constantly called snowflakes for expecting to be treated in a way that acknowledges and respects our humanity and autonomy
I also appreciated that Brittany (PJ's crush) had that moment of confirming she was straight while affirming the intimacy of female platonic friendship. Even at the end during the kiss at the game, her reaffirming this rather than somehow having all the characters learn they are a lesbian or bi felt real. I know I (as a lesbian) have had to contend with the fact that throughout high school I had incredibly intense and intimate relationships with other girls that I (who didn't at the time know I was a lesbian) certainly had a different expectation for than the other party. Some of them, like me, did find out later they were bi or lesbian, but others were just straight and saw what I imagined as romantic love as platonic. Learning how to understand that and appreciate the platonic love they did give me and knowing that was enough took time. And I appreciate a glimpse of that with PJ and Brittany
I saw so many people give criticism during their reactions that Brittany was leading her on but… if we rewatch it i think it’s proof that the point the writers were trying to make is valid, Brittany says herself in the movie that her identity is literally attached to Isabel, she doesn’t have very many friendships or emotional substance, and just because the few times we see her growing emotionally and in her relationships is with PJ doesn’t mean it’s romantic or sexual. She said she would make her a bracelet, she owns a jewelry business so of course she would probably give out freebies to her friends, especially one she’s building a friendship with, she invites her over to hang out and study, something many girls straight or gay do all the time, she engages in playful banter, the same way she always has with everyone else throughout the film. Through PJ’s eyes, of course she’s looking into all these behaviors, shes had a several year long infatuation with her, it makes sense but to see so many people say Brittany was leading her on is proof that we need more films like this!
To answer your question, i loved it! As a bi girl who was a very horny teen (lol), i appreciated having my s3xual desires validated because more often than not women's wants are made to appear so bland when we can actually be pretty intense.
Oh such a strong point about the way Queer women's dialogue is portayed vs reality! I grew up within Lesbian community with an out Lesbian mom and one strong cultural element of that community that i think has informed who i am as an adult is that "edgy" gritty humour.
I’m 31 and only realized I was bi at 26 and started dating or openly having sex with women/people of other genders and when I was a teen I would have loved to have movies like these. Bottoms had me doubled over laughing, I saw it in theaters twice with my friends. I want to see more of these silly fun queer stories get told and not only the ones with heartbreak and death and struggle.

watched this with my lesbiasian friend group, had a blast! it really felt like this movie was made for me because of the 2000s teen movie vibes I’m nostalgic for + the type of queer humor/dialogue I have with my friends as an adult.

Cuz at first what frustrated me is seeing presumably or self identified cishets not only playing the gay roles but also act stupid in interviews just to get fame and money while simultaneously seeming like they’re making fun of lgbt ppl, they can leave the interview or finish the movie and live their happy cishet life while I could be killed or jailed any minute, I was taking the anger and frustration on them when I shouldn’t have.
But like I said, I realized not everything is about me and I’m just one person in a planet of 8 billions. It’s ok for others to not feel like they want to come out, or not feel rushed to do so. Or even be cishet. And it’s even sad to think some can’t possibly come out.

As a gay woman, yeah the movie felt self-aware and very camp. The two leads get publicly outed and shamed for their sinister intentions to start the club. PJ is written intentionally horrible and doesn’t get her girl but apologizes and begrudgingly recognizes her mistakes and gets an another, unexpected girl. 100/10 movie, can’t believe it was filmed in 27 days and got denied filming locations. Hoping they’re able to make another project together
I’m sapphic and saw it at a drive in with my girlfriend. We thought it was silly and interesting! I appreciated that it didn’t care about being realistic. I also appreciated that Hazel was very autistic coded (when they took everything literally) and that’s what caused some of the plot points with explosives.

Also keep in mind this came around the time after the SAG AFTRA strikes started and they had limited movie theater releases. I saw so many social media comments saying the nearest theater playing it was an hour or more away. I think it was fantastic they were able to make as much as they did considering all these factors as well!!

I think the recent """coming out""" of sufjan stevens is a good barometer for this. Clearly he wasn't near any closests for his life, and a lot of music had pretty clear queer subtext. But at the same time he chose to keep his personal life private, and i think that is something we have to respect.

I don't really have a hat in the ring when it comes to discussions about when people should come out, though I strongly agree with you that it should be done when the person is safe. But I have long felt that we as a society are waaaaaay too invested in the private lives of celebrities, and in particular young celebrities. I have never understood the obsession with knowing all the minute details about their lives, especially the details they want to keep private. It's like people forget that they are real people, and deserve the same consideration as anyone else. If they don't want to share, then it's none of our damn business.
On a side note, I kind of went through the opposite experience as the viewers you mentioned that drop you when they find out you're trans. I forget how I stumbled onto your channel (I think the BDSMer's take on 50 Shades video?), but I remember being thrilled when I found out you were trans. I'm Christian, raised in the Bible Belt, living in the Bible Belt, with several of my closest family members being trans or enby, and I was clueless. Finding out you were trans and openly talked about your experiences is why I subscribed. I feel sorry for the people who are too brainwashed to realize how informative your content can be.

I LOVED Bottoms! I watched it with my wife on my honeymoon weekend and we almost pissed ourselves laughing. One thing I love is the exclusion of queer sex scenes. Like it didn’t feel like a PornHub category and I loved that! It was so damn gay and so fucking silly 🤣🤣🤣 it just felt like looking back on my high school memories with my best friend. I want more fun, weird gay movies!

Back when I was a youngster, my entire queer experience was through the movies, because there were consequences to being open in my real life. Regardless of whether I enjoyed the film (not as much as I wanted to), I do applaud that this film was made, that it had a wider release, and that the gay high school experience is depicted as so much more open than my time. I am seeing more progress on that front than I ever thought I would see in my lifetime (especially being a resident of regressive Florida), and it is so encouraging to see.
As a teenage lesbian, I saw this in the theater with my two friends who are also queer and we had a fucking blast!! We could not stop laughing and crushing on Hazel(and Isabelle for me personally)

They committed so fully on every aspect-the comedy, the stunts and violence, the characters, the totally ridiculous satirical setting-and I think that’s what made it so successful. Regarding the discussion of whether actors need to be out queer people to play queer characters, i will say that not only do i not want actors to be forced to out themselves for a role, but as someone who doesn't have a set label i feel comfortable in, i find the idea kind of exclusionary
Loved this film! I think queer people should be able to have media where the characters can be terrible and raunchy and we still root for them! It’s always Sunny has been on the air for like 15 seasons and it’s wildly beloved! To me, this was the sapphics’ it’s always Sunny moment and that’s great!
Bottoms was sooooo good it was so fun to laugh through the entire thing in theater with my friend! Also It’s crazy to me that people could watch Ayo & Rachel’s work and question them or be unsatisfied without how unapologetic they are… like they don’t have to say the words if you know you know and it is really crazy to me after how many young actors/musicians have literally been not just pressured but genuinely harassed and bullied into coming out to feel like we need them to explicitly confirm anything to be happy with the movie! I mean asking the question once sure but they gave their answer lol that’s that
For me, I care a lot less about the particular sexual identity of the actors and a lot more about whether they're telling a good story that's true to queer experience. And generally you're a lot more likely to get that if the writers are queer!
My local Cinemark only played Bottoms for like 2 weeks. I dunno if that was the norm for other regions but it seemed weird to me. I ended up missing it and having to wait to stream it. Really really enjoyed it though!
The hijacking of the term "queerbaiting" to apply it to real people gotta be the most toxic shit I have seen in a while. I think you said it elsewhere in another video but especially since sexuality can be very fluid and therefore change throughout one's life (like the real life Piper who is fictionalised in Orange is the New Black, to name just one example) makes it so very screwed up to force someone at the age of 18 to basically set it in stone, not to mention jeopardise their whole career and possibly endangering themselves in the current political climate in the US.
That being said, I haven't seen the movie but I'm looking forward to see a silly lesbian sex comedy!

I never felt totally connected to heterosexual media as a queer woman. I never found it relatable. from how the characters act / their priorities / even their gesturing and speaking style never spoke to me but something about queer media always feels so much more magnetizing maybe because I can see myself represented in the characters like straight guys do watching 90% of all films ever. yeah bottoms is campy and goofy but so am I.
Idk why but I was kind of turned off from this movie when I first heard about it. From the trailer i was afraid it was just one of those films that all it does is just take straight roles/stereotypes and just replace them with queer people so all it is just repackaged bs and pandering. But your review means a lot to me especially as as a recently come out bisexual and as someone who wants to focus on consuming queer media by queer people. I’m def gonna go watch it rn!

as a sapphic woman, i enjoyed this movie a lot! i thought it was hilarious and loved the soundtrack and cinematography. though i did feel a few plot points kind of got pushed to the side or completely forgotten about by the end. but i agree that we need more silly gay movies! and i feel these kind of movies get held to a higher standard by a non lgbt audience, even when its obviously campy and meant to be silly. so for what bottoms was trying to be, it was perfect and i loved it!

I absolutely L O V E D this film! Think i watched the trailer cos Ayo caught my eye & seen her in a few things & think she’s great & with Bear gonna be her launch into bigger things. Loved the trailer. I took my sister to see it & she had NO idea aboot what the film was. She loved it too! It’s just straight up funny! So cleaver in its story telling & style. Elements of satire & a bit hyper feel & surreal (I felt there was at least 1 or 2 references to Not Another Teen Movie… but that could just be me)
And I can’t relate to really any of this film. I’m a 38 straight cis white male… & my sister is cis straight too (for the most part?? We’ve never fully talked about it… going from her previous relationships…)… just took her to see a great film. Spend some sibling time together

As a transmasc non-binary person, I *really* loved Bottoms! It's so unapologetically gay and dumb and takes all the risks while being very aware of what it is.
When I heard that Ayo was from a very religious background that hit so hard because not being able to be fully out to my family due to that is super real but this and other films like it are a great path to take just a load off some days. Life can’t always be serious. We’re ugly and untalented too
Your comments on the way the movie reflected irl gay conversation really put into words one of my favourite things about the movie! As a teen bisexual, with a friend group of mostly bisexuals and lesbians i really felt like they captured the kind of humour we use on a day to day basis. The movie also definitely captured the horniness which i love. Not all young queer people are confused, conflicted and afraid of admitting their desires; some of us are very open about our queerness (when we feel safe to do so). This has definitely become one of my favourite movies. Its just so fun.

god i fucking adore this kind of queer representation
I really enjoyed this film! couldn't catch it in theaters but bought it for on demand streaming the minute it was available. For me a queer character being played by a cis straight actor doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the media, but when it is a queer actor, it's does feel special/ is an added bonus not lost on me. As a bisexual asian american, finding out the actress who plays Josie's love interest, Isabel (played by Havana Rose Liu), is actually pansexual was cool to see and made me love the character of Isabel even more.
I think this might be the funniest film I've seen this year. Maybe for a few years. Cannot wait to see the next project from Rachel Sennott and Emma Seligman

Edut: I dont want to piss people off by critiquing queer media (is this even a criticism of the film?). But i noticed Kat retitled this multiple times. I think part of the reason is the film title and imagery. With no other context you get no idea of how cool this is if you haven't already seen a trailer for it.

My girlfriend and I watched the previews, and both thought it looked stupid, so we didn't watch it. Though I honestly never like watching movies/ shows about kids in high school, even if they're gay. I just never find them entertaining.
Plus, we work at a gay bar, so we see enough awkward horny baby lesbians daily😂
I've noticed cis/het people are starting to realize how queer people make fun of each other and such. I'm gonna be honest, this might sound wild, but I credit Terri Joe/Georgia/Kelon for this. And before him, Trixie and Katya.
