    I've always wondered how gunsmiths calculate the amount of holes vs the length of barrel and how much gas release is beneficial vs hindering performance. Pretty cool you did this on your own, i kinda figured it's not that hard. Just need a little can do attitude and maybe an extra slide and or barrel... you've definitely got a knack for it, but i understand why you wouldn't want to make a business out of it with all the BS regulations and laws that taunts firearms.

      Much appreciated!
      When I started doing this, I looked at a bunch of porting jobs that shops offered and guessed at the hole size and got a starting point of cross sectional area from there. Starting doing the porting jobs and fine tuned it based on the performance I was getting. Im sure you could arbitrarily punch holes in the end of a barrel and see some performance gain. I wanted to be a little more scientific about it that that. I am a mechanical engineer, and have a basic working knowledge of fluid mechanics (I got way into the weeds with compressible supersonic gas flow at one point haha).
      There are two very basic things that will always undoubtedly increase performance. 1. Direct as much gas vertically as possible. .2 Put the ports as close to the end of the barrel as possible.
      I have found some port size and layouts that i prefer based on the testing and results I have seen and pretty much stick to those now.
      I wont drill holes larger than .125", and I generally have a cross sectional area range I target based on barrel length. Depending on what milling I can do (and think would look good) to the slide, the barrel length, and how I want to arrange the ports, that is how my port designs come about. Of course I am limited to what I can do with my 3-axis manual machine and machining skills. I also look at what other people are doing to pistols of the same style - like the Bul Armory Tac Pro in this case. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here, there are only so many ways you can punch holes in a barrel. I will likely never come up with some new, crazy, novel port design that revolutionizes ported barrel performance haha.

      @@EngineersArmory dang that's probably the most informative and interesting comment I've gotten back in reference to porting! Sounds like you know what you're doing and from looking at your library it only validates that. I've been curious about my 365 AXG Legion having ports on top of the stock "integrated compensator" SIG offers. Aftermarket slides with windows and ported barrels can be bought for the 3.1" version. I would love to get something like that but have also been skeptical of ports being a couple inches from the barrel hood. Anyway appreciate your time!

    What is your recoil spring set up ? I’m new to 1911 and just purchased the same firearm and wanted to change it to a tooless guide rod

    • @EngineersArmory
      @EngineersArmory  3 месяца назад +1

      You're not gonna be able to run a tool less guide rod with a bushing barrel. Check out my budget upgrades video on this pistol. I would recommend the wilson combat full length commander guide rod. The 16# factory recoil spring was a but heavy so I got a reduced power tuners pack from wolff. Without ports I dropped it down to 15#. 14# would be fine too. With ports I run 13#.

    Sorry I keep saying this but please use a board, not a flapping sheet for VS comparison slow motion. A plywood sheet painted white with a graph paper grid, or board painted black with craft layout grid board with inch squares. Think car crash test with grid back grounds to illustrate compressions and movement of crumple zones.
    I think you have the porting mastered now. Nothing is safe from your milling machine.👍👍

    • @EngineersArmory
      @EngineersArmory  4 месяца назад

      Haha sorry man. Probably not going to happen. Its easy for me to fold up this photography background sheet and put it in my range bag. Wouldn't be so easy to haul around a sheet of plywood in my car. Those grid lines are also specific to calculating velocities and accelerations, which I am not concerned with. I know its not the best but the sheet creates clear enough of a background for me to get the muzzle angle measurements.

      @EngineersArmory  2 месяца назад +7

      I wanted a project. That was the whole point of me buying the cheapest doublestack 1911 I could then modifying it to see how well I could make it perform. I also have less money into this than a Springfield prodigy. I have shot a couple stock prodigys and this performs way better for $200 ish less. for the $1000 I have into this, there is not another double stack 1911 I could have bought that performs this good. If I wanted a high end 2011 I would have bought one.
