      Many of us don't put vinegar on anything from the chippy. I prefer not to mask the tastes and soak the food - be it nice crispy battererd haddock, haggis or black pudding - with vinegar. iI always made me laugh when I went to Europe, in the 60s, and saw some Brits put red wine vinegar on the chips (or frites).

    If you're planning to spend any time in the uk, I recommend teaching your kids to eat with a knife and fork and not speaking with your mouth full.
    As a brit I found that very difficult to watch.

    The very nice man in the Fish n Chip shop made you all very welcome, gave the boys lollipops, watched you struggle to use cutlery, ignored you talking with your mouth full and rudely demanding hot sauce and you had the ignorant audacity to rudely critique his food while playing with it, with him stood there. That was incredibly disrespectful, ill-mannered, ungrateful, and unkind. Just because something is different does not mean it is bad or wrong. Americans are used to highly sugared and chemical filled processed food normally covered in yet more sugar/chemical sauce in overly large and unnecessary portions. That is why so many are grossly overweight. Many Americans who travel to other countries carry their superiority complex with them. The US is not superior. It just does some things differently. Wind that complex in, learn to say, "Excuse me", "please" and "thank you". Just enjoy the experience, the adventure of it all and you will rub along just fine.

      Julie, you summarised this perfectly. I would add that the child eating the fish at about 9 minutes in should be told NOT to discard crumbs on the table on to the floor, someone has to clean it up, again disrespectful to the owner/server.

  • @sirjohnmara

    Some tips: The sooner you at least TRY some table manners - the better - it's quite important in Europe. This will help your kids in the future. I know it's overlooked in USA, I've seen how Americans eat in TV-shows like "Hell's Kitchen" - 90 % of the guests use the cutlery like wild beasts. Water is safe to drink from regular taps in whole northern Europe. Best of LUCK!

    use the touch bottons on the stove top to turn on the hobbs then +/- to turn up or down the heat and if there is a light beside the lock symbol you need to hold the lock to unlock it hope that helps

    I’m no expert but … that looks like an induction hob?
    If it is the surface isn’t meant to get hot, it works by using a magnetic field to heat the pan directly.
    In other words the pan will heat up but the cooker top itself won’t get very hot.

    • @nigelanscombe8658
      @nigelanscombe8658 Месяц назад +1

      I think the controls for the stove top might be built into the glass panel itself so that knob below is probably for the oven.

      French fries are NOT a McDonaids 'invention'. No more than hamburger is American. The Yanks, during the wars and as travellers ate frites in Belgium and France and called them French Fries when back home. There's no such thing as a good frite or chip in any of the American franchises, in the UK and Europe. English chippies make crap chips, btw - especially in London.

  • @BaronFanhope
    @BaronFanhope Месяц назад +7

    These are 'chippy chips' not fries. Next time, combine with a buttered bread roll to have a 'chip butty'!
    Curry sauce or Gravy (depends on what part of UK) + chips is also nice.
    Other things worth trying: Pukka Pies (savoury meat pies, which should be flaky, beware shops that just reheat them!), battered sausage, chipolata, pineapple fritter and the classic pickled egg!
    Battered mars bar for the really adventurous!

    I had a halogen hob ( not a stove) in my last house. I think you have to press the things that look like buttons in the middle of the hob , to turn it off or on and to adjust the temperature. Those hobs that are completely smooth are brilliant to keep clean . You can buy a hob cleaner for ceramic hobs in the supermarket.

    To turn on the top of the stove .you will find a small round button with a line in the middle of it .probably on your left .put your finger on it and hold for a few seconds .it switch on and make a bleeping sound for a few seconds. Then go to the part you want to switch on and put your finger on the + sign to turn it on.

  • @philb2085
    @philb2085 Месяц назад +4

    I think it's an induction hob. The glass won't get hot but a pot of water/milk will. Don't leave pots on it if you're not sure it's off? 😂

    • @debbee0867
      @debbee0867 Месяц назад

      She was using the knobs for the oven not the hob 😂It is an induction hob, I have one, it is touch control, no knobs involved. I wasn't sure if she had the hob turned on at the socket, I couldn't tell. As you say, don't leave pans on there or she could burn the pan if empty, especially when she isn't sure what she is doing. Induction hobs do cool down very quickly though, once she's worked it out 😀 I love my induction hob, heats up water for pasta in next to no time.
      I'm wondering if she worked out the oven as you have to set both dials and press a button to pre-heat the oven.
