Hi, it looks great ... only thing I do differently is get a pan, sweat down onions, carrots, garlic and celery, then add the mince to the pan ... keep it all moving until mince is brown, then add the wine to cook off, then add the flour (off the heat) then add stock bit by bit, then after it's reduced, add the tomato purée, and the Worcester sauce. Simmer until thickens (stir occasionally) ... just before putting mixture in baking dish, add the frozen peas. Then top with your lovely mashed potatoes. 👍
Great way to do it. Personally I like to add the tomato puree before the liquid so that it browns off a little. Yours is a nice recipe. Worcestershire sauce adds so much flavour.
My mum used to put cheese into the mashed potatoes, used the tines of a fork to run along the mashed potatoes to give it loads of crispy ridges, also slices of tomato on top for each portion. Coming in after playing out in the snow to a plateful of it was bliss.
That tv looks real nice! I’m from the north of England and when I was young my grandmother used to make stuff like cottage pie’ hot pot ‘sausage casserole, and one of my favourite dessert was rice pudding, After my grandmother passed away I inherited her had written cook books she had been writing for about 50 years it is my prised possession !!!!
Yep, looks good. Comfort food for a cold day and we have plenty of those in the UK. Personally, I make it a lot simpler than that. Basically all I do is the ground beef, an onion, a carrot, salt and pepper and a mash topping and that's it. I forgo the wine, and peas are usually a side and maybe sauteed with celery if you like. In Sheffield (UK) we never use Worcestershire Sauce. We used a product called Henderson's Relish which is a similar product but not as sharp in taste and it has a fuller/rounder flavour. We splash it on when the pie is on the plate
Well done 👏 the whole idea is making it your own. I can’t do spice but I know my nephew would devour it. Try a little more gravy and I love bread and butter with my mash it’s deslish. I would love to see you make a British beef stew and dumplings 👌 comfort food at its finest. Much love to you, wifey and ya family x
I use grated carrots and obviously don't add the "Kalani extras", but do season with salt and cracked black pepper. BTW ... if you do a shepherds pie (w/lamb) try adding a tin of baked beans to the meat mix ... it works really well!
As a Brit, I make mine almost exactly the same as you except I would sweat the onions, carrot and celery first before adding the mince. It does make a difference. I also add garlic to mine and I use a little smoked paprika.
As a proud traditional English Auntie who lives alone in my cottage with my cats I can say that your cottage pie looks absolutely lovely!!!! Some lovely green peas and gravy on the side would be my only additions for this gorgeous pie. Proper comfort! To answer a previous comment about 'starching out the pots'...for a pie like this where you want the mash to be stiff rather than creamy, you don't need to...but there is absolutely no harm in doing so and it would not effect the pie topping if you just add less butter and milk when mashing the pots. If you are making roasties or wedges then that is when 'starching' is noticed more because it effects the outside edges. Also your casserole dish was absolutely spot on. There will always be regional variations to the meat recipe, some people ad wine some don't, some add garlic some don't, some use Bisto, some use no tomato, etc etc. Your final pie looked perfect and looked like it tasted like a Classic Cottage Pie. Sorry for the long message :) take care and all the best x
@@annother3350 Yea fair enough, I know people that use tomato puree and some don't, I guess it is one of those dishes where you can make it how you like it. I like it made using bisto! :)
Love it a lot in Australia too. Great comfort food in winter. Needs Wostershire sauce though and I usually put a kick of some chilli though that’s not authentic and I’d leave out the Thyme
The beauty of ‘home’ dishes, is there are no exact recipes, every one is an interpretation of what you like, what you have but the results are always, comfort, nostalgia and sharing!❤
Another great effort, definitely more fancy than mine but looks really tasty. If you find your mash is often lumpy try getting hold of a potato ricer, like a giant garlic press and gives really smooth mash.
outstanding as a former british army chef I would serve that even like the idea of the extra spices i would eat it but not sure about anyone else i follow you on tiktok and love how youve embraced britishness
Just sat down to eat some homemade cottage pie and this popped up on my suggestions. That looked really delicious, every family has there own variations on the regular recipe so the extra spices are all good. The only suggestions would be on your method and cooking pots, like sweating the onions first and using a bigger pot to put everything in, but all things considered very well done 😀👍
I once cooked cottage pie for visiting Americans we met on holiday in France, I cooked mine using diced shin of beef...it was so good that they asked the next night if we had anymore...fortunately we had some in the freezer..ps, no cheese on top..
Looks yum ! As a Brit this is a normal staple during winter … you can also add grated cheese to your mash , then mash it in and spread on top … this dish can be cooked multiple ways with different ingredients like mushrooms for personal taste
Looks great, i wouldn't do too much different, i sometimes add a bit of thyme if i remember. Beef stock gravy and ketchup is a must and maybe a side of broccolli and cauliflower. I'm also a cheese works with everything kinda guy :)
a lot of tomato paste need to cut back on that, I also add a stock of 1 cube of oxo beef stock and 2 good teaspoons of marmite, with the Worcestershire sauce, a shake of soy sauce and garlic, dried mixed herbs.
Great job bro I’m from England I personally wouldn’t put the cayenne and paprika in but respect your choice I like to let my bottom layer cool / chill before adding the mash I sometimes change out the milk in the mash for cream I also add extra gravy when I serve it Also Cottage pie = HP sauce on top Shepard’s pie = mint sauce on top I also sometimes make cottage pie butties (cottage pie in between two slices of white bread)

It looked pretty banging, and im gonna try it some day with cayenne and paprika in it to try.
English man here - just some tips for your cottage pie. Bake it in the oven WITHOUT the cheese on top, then take it out, add the cheese and put it under the grill. Makes it lovely and crisp all over. Also, add some Worcestershire sauce to the meat and some white pepper. Pour the meat sauce into the dish and let it cool down to almost cold, THEN add the mash. Putting the cheese on first prevents the mash underneath from crisping. Add it at the end then grill. Cheers bro.
