Not too long ago, we had the absolute genius guitarist Tom Quayle visit our Birmingham store for an in-store clinic along with his amazing signature Ibanez guitar. We learnt tons of amazing tips from Tom, and we made sure to document some of them!
In this excerpt, Tom explains how to nail your legato in a way that isn't overwhelming or fatiguing. Thanks Tom!

I would really like to see new albums, new real songs, new live shows with a band. Not always demos, tuts, or the same few shred-covers. I think Quayle could and should do a lot more.
i agreed!!!!!
I would love to see new music from all these YT guitar teachers. What are they working on artistically? What's their musical vision in terms of music itself? 😊
@@risingsun2677 some are just natural born teachers, nothing wrong with it! We need good teachers and Tom s one of the best!
capitalism sucks
There is no money to be made in new albums, original music, or performance. RUclips and social media, along with party DJs, killed all that. If there was big money to be made in performance, then all the great guitar players would be doing that. The money for guitar players in today's world is made in teaching students, RUclips ad share, and in creating courses. Of course, if you want to set yourself apart from just being a great guitar player, learn to sing! People love to hear singing, good or bad. There is just something about singing. Perhaps because the human voice is the first instrument, and that's all we hear on the radio.
Just an unbelievably talented guitarist and also great teacher.
Talk about guitar masterclass hidden in obscure ( sort of ) places. Came for the azes review, stayed for the tom quayle lesson. Really great channel you guys got here.
Thanks for checking out the content man! Hope you got a lot to practise from Tom here :)
It's not only about having the technique, but knowing what to play as well.
Absolutely. Technique means next to nothing if the guitarist can't make a musical statement with it.
Tom Quayle is definitely musical.
@@97stratocaster21 & repetitive!
Having learned the technique enables you to express your ideas. Doesn`t work the other way round. Worst case is having an idea and having to learn the technique for it. The idea dies on the way.
I can do this without a guitar...😂
Excellent lesson. I've just started going deeper into theory and legato. This is very helpful.
brilliant explanation about how to break that "triplet sensation" when you play legato
Love Tom's ability on the guitar and his amazing execution to explain his approach 😃
Yes, Tom is a superb player and teacher. I found a great video with an outstanding legato concept. Maybe you are interested in this Video, too: ruclips.net/video/A_0zPdM6z1o/видео.html
His legato is crazy!
Reminds me of that Aussie legato innovator. Great display of discipline and technique!
Brett Garsed. He's brilliant.
Tom explains so well!
Impressive technique.
Btw, in italian legato means “tied”
Просто и бесподобно!!!🔥🔥🔥...
I think it would be great to see him talk how to setup your guitar, like string action , preferable string gauge for this technique and does it require any compression or should it be done without using compression ?
He answered this in his 5 myths of legato video.
I would guess what made Allan Holdsworth so unique was how musical he was with the technique.
Yeah, Holdsworth could make you cry with just one or two notes. Tom Quayle is incredible, but listening to him here really makes it apparent just how much of a musical genius Allan really was, at least in my opinion. This is NOT to take _anything_ away from Tom. I hope this is understood.
Hes got more skill in that middle right finger than i do both my hands. always amazing to watch and listen to Tom explain
A truly masterful explanation of legato. Bravo Tom Quayle!

This is super helpful, thank you
So ascending he only plectrum picks the root note on E string, then middle finger picks everything else? (ie. first note of each 3 note/string pattern). Either way, he is the very smoothest legato player I've seen.
Yep
Check out Panos Antonio Arvanitis . Enjoy !
16:53 Faltou ensinar a cereja do bolo!
Wow now I have to learn legato all over again with my middle finger
How cool is this… TQ is such a great teacher
Tom certainly has a great way of explaining things without alienating anyone. We could listen to his wisdom all day.
@@guitarguitaruk Yes!! Finally a clear description of this wonderful technique and how to make music with it, instead of a nonsence riffle of notes.. Would be glad to listen to the whole clinic/masterclass. Is it possible to hear it somewhere? Thanxx !!
The best.
Barely using the pic except for the first note, then the sequence is; (hammer-on)pull-off, (hammer on)pull-off & right third finger pull the next note. For motion economy he makes sure to immediately place the RH 3rd finger on the string it will be pulling next. I still think mastering picking each note is a necessary skill hut this hybrid sequencing of “pic, pull, pull & RH 3rd finger pull” has its place.
Allan Fking Holdsworth
Thanks you again always great 👍
That intro 🔥
Brilliant solutions to some of the challenges of Legato! Thanks for sharing!!!

Just when you think you are getting somewhere you find this...
16:25 ahí está la clave que puede cambiar tu forma de tocar...
He does it soooo smooth too
Hi, I think that the best translation of ‘legato’ in Italian is ‘tied’.
Yes, also "bound". in other Romance languages like Spanish we have 'ligado' and so on. "Ligar" (It. legare) means "to tie, to bind". Of course we stick to Italian for the music term, but it's fairly easy for Romance language speakers to get the meanings of these roots.
Alot of hybrid picking going on.
He's playing most notes with the middle finger combined with the pic...it's the best way to play like this ...love it
9:47 probably is saying endo-metronome
Brilliant! I had to check the playback speed of this video as it seemed he was playing too fast!
It's even more mesmerizing in person 🤯
suddenly all the osu I used to play is useful. My left hand is more rhythmically synced than my right cause of that damn game.
Is it possible to implement this technique for maximum smoothness and speed, if I don't wanna play 3 notes per sting? let's say I play pure pentatonic 2+2+2+2+2 or sextatonic 3+2+2+3+2+3 patterns. I kinda struggle to make it sound any good
he must be heavily influenced by Greg Howe...it totally sounds like him...bought his album back in the 80s....sounds like Howe even if he says Satriani
Great, didnt know about the accent thing.
What I see is he uses the pick mostly when switching to a new string
I think that's the most I've learned about playing music, let alone guitar, in seventeen minutes. Outstanding seminar and video.
Tremendous
He's to good!!! Great teacher and player.
...like watching magic.
Hello! Banking track ?
he ois good but he is just recycling guthrie govan riffs
Supr RAINFALL LEGETO 💗💢👍👍
What planet is that?
I don't know if i don't have enough hand strength, or what the problems is; I never get that much sound from the guitar when I try to play this way. Seems like I lose a lot of volume, and the notes justfade off quickly. Anyone know why?
Is the extension of legato tapping then?
If you play harpsichord, since there is no dynamic, you do accents playing with time. Then, definitively, Holdsworth is the master of legato.
What gear are you using to get that overdrive tone?
You can get similar result with a compressor, then overdrive and a second compressor (or limiter). Let me know if you need more precise tips.
Already fell asleep from the intro
Why.
There's so much tension between my pinky and ring finger when doing pull offs. Any tips?
Depends, but Frank Gambale uses the pick in a ingenious way that sounds so smooth as well.
What a master💯💯💯
This is amazing, youtube at it's best! Thanks!
Phenomenal player
I'm italian bud, legato means TIED
Amazing lesson! Tom Quayle is a monster player...
Legato means connected.
Reminds me of Garsed
Wow I didnt even notice his hybrid picking, insaaaane skill!
Amazing application of this technique.
"Legato" is Italian for 'tied.' The implication is that each note is tied into the next.
How to get that acoustic sound at 14:55 ? Can't get even close...
at the end he just went nuts hahahahaha
Always favorite ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
Any day of the week! 🤘
Is that a pink azs in the background?🤯😍
If it's the same pink guitar we're looking at... that is in fact a Balaguer Standard Series Thicket in Pastel Pink. You can check it out here: www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/210218366905025--balaguer-standard-series-thicket-gloss-pastel-pink 😍
@@guitarguitaruk that's some impressive specs for such an affordable guitar!!!!
Chops!
Supr Rockin 💗💢👍👌
legato in italian literally means bound, tied
legato means “tied together”
One of the best around young tom,
Honestly, though, how much of that type of "music"/sound at the beginning could you really listen to?
It's super good to have in the bag though for sick little guitar fills.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
If we say that Holdsworth is the Socrates of guitar, then Tom Quayle is the Aristotle of guitar. Always love his playing and teaching. ❤
Can't touch this!!!!!!!
Musically tasteful...succulence
Stop. Hammer Time
WOW!!!!! NICE PLAYING
Ok, now your turn !
*runs away scared*
So in short, don't accent each note when changing strings. keep it smooth.
IIRC the 'connected' aspect of the legato is the significant part. If you're playing another instrument there shouldn't be any overlapping of notes, but neither gaps between notes. Also very little transient attack. Obviously some of these will happen as part of the expression but should be minimised to considered expression.
WTF? PERFECTION
Great lesson!!!!
what does he do when its descending and ascending at the same time ?
What do you mean? How would be be doing both simultaneously?
@@DatHombre sometimes he wents for example high e -> b -> g -> b -> g -> d (strings).
Jaw drop at 6:44
It is from Satriani's Flying on blue dream song. When solo starts. Amazing piece!
🤘
🤘
Yet another reason to ditch the pick and go full fingerstyle ooga booga.
Yep..all the right notes.. But music?
Legato is Italian for "tied", since the notes are played with a single picking of the string.
On the other hand, Staccato means "Detached"
Best guitar ever!
Makes everything look so easy as well 😀
Am I crazy or does that fret wire look absolutely enormous?
Indeed it has jumbo frets. Bigger than Suhr's jumbo/57110 and that may cause it to appear enormous. I had a set of 57110 fretwire installed on one of my guitar and it was smaller than its original nickel frets.
It helps legato and getting strings really low.
@@kipponi oh cool thanks for the info 👍
How about the note?🤣🤣🤣
The note?
