"We wanted to censor the script for modern sensibilities and couldn't be bothered to rerecord lines to match." Let's not kid ourselves, that's what this means.
Their explanation makes no sense. The Voice acting in the first game was not good but honestly it added to the charm of the game. Many others have made similiar statements on social media. The voice acting in Origins was very good. Some of the best I've ever heard in any game. The dub VA not being in the game really hurts the value. Also in the case of the first game, I recall an option to cut the voices off to those that hated it. They are just lazy.
I haven't seen if there's anything worse in terms of localizer snobbishness, but they should've changed the "ideal wife" book to something completely different if they absolutely had to alter it. The "yikes" bit is character assassination of Kalas and obviously the opinion of a localizer imposed into his monologue. Kalas is not the type of dude to give enough of a shit about something like that to make any comments.
Emulating EWatLO with an undub so you don't have to hear IS THAT ALL YOU GOT? IS THAT ALL YOU GOT? IS THAT ALL YOU GOT? IS THAT ALL YOU GOT? nonstop is probably the way to go.
"Inoffensive" and "sensitivity" is double-speak for censorship and cowardice. I hate that they didn't include the English dub. Stereotypes are stereotypes and are generally true and people these days are so fucking pathetic.
Censorship is never acceptable what a waste of a remake. knowing there was English voice over they could of used just made up my mind not to get this game . I play a lot of jrpg and I get tried of reading.
It's funny how in the 80s nobody was even concerned or offended by what we could hear in 50s movies but nowadays ten years later some people thinks writting are "aged badly". That's insane.
Its odd since I am used to english only, when I prefer Japanese. I do hate this change however because I wanted this series to get reintroduced to the game. First one was one of my favorites on the gamecube, so at least I get to experience it again personally without an emulator.
Baten Kaitos origins was released only in Japan and in North America back then, if I remember correctly. Many gamers in the rest of the world didn't have the possibility to play it even if they loved the prequel. Living in Europe, I was very happy when they announced the remaster, for obvious reasons, and pre-ordered it instantly ( even if I don't use to buy games at day one). But yesterday, I could figure it out how listless this remaster is. Not only the voices are only in Japanese, but they didn't even bother to translate the Baten Kaitos origins. It is in English. I am Italian, and fortunately I understand English quite well, but there are many other gamers who don't. I do not regret my purchase, because I didn't have a phisical copy of the game, and I will play it, but what the hell.
Dutch here, I understand what you're saying, but games are barely ever translated into Dutch, so we are used to playing in English. Side note: I believe that games and movies not being translated is why we are good at English in the Netherlands
My guess is they went through and made the written translation less awkward or more "correct" in terms of translation, and it would have just been weird to have the English voice acting not match the subs. And they didn't want to spend the time and money to redub. Playing the game, I can't really picture anything that would be considered politically incorrect...it's a fairly "innocent" game. I don't remember the voice acting on the Gamecube but I sorta remember reading about it being not so great in Gamefan or something. I would probably only use the Japanese voice acting anyway. If I had to complain about anything, it's that the game visuals are kind of choppy (particularly when it fades out and in to a talking scene or any environment change) and it's already crashed on me.
funfact: the intro of baten kaitos 1 IS redubt. its terrible, yes. but they cared to find voice actors of a lot of important characters in the game , just to decide that they end the dub right after the intro sczene. thats some crazy bullshit...
@@HerzogZosa The Baten Kaitos 1 intro was always in English, even in the original Japanese version. The version included in the HD remaster is the same as the original Japanese GameCube release.
I found some changes in text examples. At least i think so. There are some things i dont remember being there before. Like that "how to be the perfect wife" book or whatever. It now says "Yikes" at the end. Is that new? That feels new and really liberal to avoid sexism that probably wouldnt fly today. I could be remembering wrong. The no US physical release is what gets me.
Personally the only reason i am even purchasing this is because i sold my GameCube, years ago. There isn't really anything that is outright sexually raunchy that i can recall. Perhaps Milly and Guilos banter, is the culprit, and one other scene where they use foul language after tarazeds boss. Either way i am pretty pissed off about this. As you have mentioned this title is very niche. I seriously doubt your average player will stumble across this by happenstance. I feel that bamco is really shooting themselves in the foot here. Ironically with how questionable EWLO english dub is, that may actually attract players who havent played these games. Given how notorios that dub is, I feel that some players may experience a reverse psychological effect, and thus want to experience the English dub. Regardless i would love to see enough discourse, reach bamco, that the English dub does get patched in eventually. Until then, this may very well be the last hurrah for baten Kaitos.
Guilo gets made fun of being a woman and a man thats the only thing i can remember. That being said all this progressive woke bs is ruining games again
That's is why JRPG aren't as good as it use to outside of Japan the publishers no longer cared for giving customers outside if Japan a immersed experience

Don't get me wrong I will buy this game BUT only because Iam hoping for a 3th game! AND why I wanna support this franchise. Iam not ok with this actually!
I bought this HD remaster because I love the BK games, whether it's English or Japanese audio with no expectations of there being a third BK game. People love to bitch and complain just to bitch and complain when every HD JRPG's often comes out only with Japanese audio only.
Honestly, I'm more excited to play the game in Japanese then in English. While I like English voice acting, the dub in baten kaitos 1 was NOT good at all(both in acting and mic quality). I still laugh at one moment when it was supposed to be a serious scene during the biggest plot twist in the game and I'm sure fans know what I'm talking about when they hear the "look at meeeeee! I'm my true self at looooong last!!" I crack up everytime this line is being said and I just end up laughing the whole way through when I'm supposed to be horrified LOL
Playasia ordered a long time ago with Eng on the Aisa ver & can't wait. I also think they should at least give a Eng dub by download for those that want it. That way everyone wins.
The developer’s argument makes no sense. The text boxes are going to be in English anyway. So if they had to change anything because it was offensive they’d have to change both the text and the dub.
I dont understand why they just dont do what they do with old movies and shows and just have a disclaimer stating this is a product of its time and stuff. Old movies that dont age well get away with that, idk why games cant do the same
From what I played, the dialogue doesn't mention you the player by a specific pronoun anymore. The English voices treated you as male by default in Baten Kaitos Origins. Now the characters just refer to you by name or make the dialogue gender neutral now so you can project whatever you want now. So for that reason, existing dubs would be out of place I assume. Luckily the Voice magnus cards (taunts in battle) in the first game are subbed. If you change the system location to Japanese the game let's you pick your sex like the original. Also the music chaotic dance 2 is uncensored now.
So yeah. I stick with my GC ver then. I play it every few years via my Wii. I dont like origins from what i played via emulator. The combat is just not as good as in 1. And the Voices would just have needed a cleanup. I cant say i know anything that would be a difficult theme for the audiance today. Its already a bretty basic and non special storytelling wrapped in amazing gameplay and soundtrack. I just dont see the problem here. Im used to sub reading but its just not the same... I was happy to have it touched up, but thats just sad to hear. But yeah... thats a no then from me.
I feel like the reason why they didn't want to bring English is money. Companies are cheap & lazy & just want to save money by not paying. I think they going forward will use AI voice so they can save massive money & won't need to hire voice actors anymore. They want total control.
Honestly, I don't have a problem with this choice at all. I'm just excited to have this game back, in English or not! I missed this game so much and will take what I can get. I'm just worries for newer player that will be turned off by this missing out an experience of a lifetime! As far as their reasons, I don't remember there being much in the game that was that scandalous, even by today's standards, but my guess is that they mean the actual voice acting itself not being received well. The OG voice acting wasn't great and I think they feared backlash from that more so than anything else. Either way, I'm still playing it and I still suggest those who can, to play it also.
Being able to fast forward is good since some fights in BK can take upwards of half an hour, but the instant KO serves as a reminder that games nowadays are made for people who don't even like games. All the handholding mechanics and participation awards have gaslit modern consumers into genuinely believing design practices that promote challenge and learning are obsolete. They're also unable to research before making purchases, they'll just impulsively buy whatever is hot and new. This why you see waves of people acting insulted and upset and demanding alterations when say for example, a new release in a long running series (that they've probably never even played or heard of) turns out to not be made for them. We've recently seen this in full force with Armored Core 6. They are utterly shocked at the prospect of something not catering to them when they could simply play a different game. If you say anything about how stupid and entitled this mindset is, you're just gatekeeping or a fanboy or whatever (if it means I'm not one of those people then hell yeah I am).
