  • These divers were on their way to Roca Partida to swim with a family of humpback whales, but before they got there, they got word that the mother humpback had lost her calf after it got attacked by killer whales. When they finally reached her, it was clear that she was utterly inconsolable over the devastation of losing her child.

I wondered why it was just hanging there, motionless. Then I read the description.
Poor girl. It really is amazing how many animals around the world show clear signs of deep grieving over loss.

@ I don't think a whale has ever killed a human when the human was in the water with it, watch some more videos like this one, you will learn that they are very aware of their size and strength, and are always careful around humans, even holding their flippers close to their body to make sure they don't hurt you.
But they have accidentally breached next to boats and landed on top of them, resulting in injuries and some deaths.

I used to be terrified of whales, they were literally my biggest fear for a long time, even to just hear the sounds they made in movies like cast away, it made me tremble, then one night I had a dream that I was on board a submarine that was in an emergency, the pressure was going and the people on board with me needed me to swim outside of it to see the extent of the damage, suddenly I found myself face to face with the big blue whale, his eye staring at me, and suddenly a tremendous calm and peace flowed over me, I think God was telling me not to fear those gentle giants, and since then I never have

If you actually pay attention to this beauty, look at her posturing really closely. I see where people think shes simply sleeping, but the divers tanks and equipment are quite loud and bothersome to whales. So if she were just sleeping the diver would annoy her enough to cause her to at least change her position if not wake up entirely. Secondly , she is utterly destroyed you can see it. The look or lack of any interest here, her side fins are just hanging there and look really heavy , she has debris falling off of her still from her fight and lastly I can feel it. She is hurting and grieving may be even in shock too if it just happened. I don't see a sleeping beauty here, I see and feel a heavy mother who just lost an epic battle to save her baby, she's definitely defeated. Look close and you can see it too. If you on here making snide comments really have a lack of empathy then SHAME on you. The human race man, we are horrible.

And when that animal hums or speaks you the reverberation feels your entire body with joy and a peaceful feeling would most likely come over you and never leave you. It is a memory that would stay strong throughout the years of your life. How wonderful. God made some of the best creatures on this Earth and placed them in the ocean to protect them and keep them safe from us humans. We occasionally will get a glimpse of his work Wendy's beautiful behemoth rise up and sometimes greet us with their songs and breeches

Whales possess emotions, they feel pain of loosing a loved one they share many of the emotions that we have . They live in a completely different environment yes but that doesn't mean anything they have a larger brain then we do. And you know what they are they're more civilized then most people. And are quite frendly with people dispite the fact we needlessly kill them for profit talk about forgiving. We could actually learn a thing or two about socialization and cilvility from these magnificent and intelligent animals.

    • @chuckchuck4016

The part where they feel emotions in the brain is way bigger than ours so they probably feel very very very complex emotions that’s we can’t ever understand

Although whales are very intelligent, the above discussion is moronic. Of course, whales have a large brain/large parts to its brain - they are huge mammals.
That doesn't mean they are more intelligent than us in the slightest. We have a much higher brain:body mass ratio which means a higher proportion of our total mass is dedicated to cognitive thought and action.
You can even use the "Encephalization Quotient", to see that we are far in a way the most complex organism on the plant in terms of our brain power.
The "Encephalization Quotient", compares brain mass to body mass, and then considers allometric affects against this ratio (the allometry bit basically just evens the ratio for animals on either end of the weight spectrum, so that mice aren't considered more intelligent than whales even though they have higher bran mass:body mass ratio).

Actually while this whale is sad, it’s sad because the mother which is almost motionless just lost her baby to a pod of orcas. Divers were called on to the scene. Which they were previously in. A mother’s heart break from the loss of her baby doesn’t just happen on land, it happens in the sea as well. The other smaller whale is trying to console her. Cries and pain are all around us and even in the animal world. Animals feel sadness, pain and depression just like we do. I credit diveeasy on Instagram for this info

Actually whales sleep at the surface. Because their brain doesn't unconsciously regulate their breathing like in humans, they are only ever in stage 1 sleep -- the equivalent of a human nodding off. They still swim, but their movements are lethargic and they don't dive when they are sleeping. I've actually seen Humpback Whales sleeping in their natural environment.

It is immensely fascinating to me how whales are acutely aware of humans when we are swimming alongside them. This one even stops to look, not out of fear or intimidation, but out of pure curiosity and interest, something you only see in animals of high intelligence. Of all the animals on this planet, whales should rank number 1 on animals we shouldn't hunt. They're far too beautiful, intelligent and mysterious of creatures, with slow reproduction rates and vital to the ocean's ecosystem. Hunting them causes too much harm than good.

Beautiful animals! They are probably smarter than humans. And they are wild animals, so there is some risk when spending time in the water around them, but they are usually just curious around people and are gentle giants, from what I know. They have been known to chase off sharks and killer whales, and at least one incident I am aware of where a whale pushed a freediver away from a large tiger shark and towards the dive boat, potentially saving her life. They really are benevolent creatures. It's sad that we hunted them for decades.

Nature is so harsh, poor mother, who can explain why life is so hard. Orcas and sharks are also majestic, but they must eat, it is just the way of the world.
