To put it in very simple terms (sorry for putting in doubt those animals "morality") they should know they cannot mate with a female in labor and perhaps they have some notion of how important it is to keep the species. Unfortunately there are many dangers in the ocean (which the mother and the calf will have to face alone).

My husband and I went whale watching today in HI. We saw plenty of moms teaching their babies, preparing them for the long journey back. They're here for about 6 months and there is no food source for them. The moms lose about 1/3 of their body weight and the babies nurse. This was beautiful to watch as there's only so much you can see from the surface.

Watching a humpback whale give birth was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had. Seeing the mother so gently guide her newborn calf to the surface for its very first breath felt like witnessing a miracle. It was a deeply moving reminder of just how delicate and powerful life can be, especially in the vast, mysterious world beneath the waves. Moments like this stay with you forever, a reminder of nature’s profound beauty.

For all those moved by this scene, realize that this and many other natural wonders are what we will lose if we continue with our current ways of sitting on the fence and denying the sea, the organisms who live in them (like these humpbacks) and the environment the protection they deserve.
