I'm going to make collard greens for the first time. I'm happy I found your recipe. I love trying new foods. thank u
one of the best recipes for collards
and corn bread
Dustin Kinser How'd they turn out for you ? Since leaving for college about 35 years ago i seem to able to only get them once a year.
Dustin Kinser kl
Dustin Kinser it will be my first time as well... hopefully they'll come out like hers
I love the clear and personal way you took us through the cooking process. Your ingredients are available to everyone. - you used the term "pepper sauce vinegar" and then elaborated on what that was. So may people making videos use ingredients familiar to themselves and leave the viewer hanging. I am definitely subscribing!
I try to make sure I use ingredients that are available to everyone but when I do use something not familiar to the masses then I try to come up with an alternative that they can use or tell them where to find it online. Thanks Monica!
Carolyn, kudos, a video on cooking greens which is sensible and not overly dramatic. Glad to see you insist on washing the greens whether 'pre-washed' or not. The 'pre-washed' are still subject to having dirt and other unwanted items in the pkg. I, too, like turkey wings but will not throw out smoked ham hock or just ham bones. Turkey wings with white beans (Great Northern) are one of my all time favorites. Thanks
They were amazing! Made em with cornbread, BBQ ribs, and german potato salad. everyone loved em!
Oomph you are an artist hun💜💜
I made this for Thanksgiving yesterday & was so nervous it would not come out. It was my first time ever making greens and this was the best ever! I compared it to be as smooth as butter ❤❤
Thank you for sharing & I look forward to more videos from you!
Thanks to you I learned to make collard greens & delicious sides to accompany the dinner I created. I was 17 living on my own when I took your tips & followed your recipes im now 21 & still use them. I finally found your channel again im so excited to try more recipes!
I cannot believe that I have not commented yet! This is LEGIT the best collard greens ever. I am a huge collard green snob too. We ended up using turkey drum stick but everything else we did as she instructed. We even grew our own collard greens this year so we were able to use those! mmmm so good. You will not be able to control yourself. Thanks so much. Cannot wait to try your other recipes.
There's nothing like a good pot of old-fashioned collard greens and cornbread!
I am so glad that you mentioned cleaning Greens that are purchased in the bag. Another video of someone showed him throwing all the greens from the bag in the POT. Oh No! Never!!!! I love your cooking style Carolyn. I too also add sugar to my greens and I will certainly try the broth this Thanksgiving. #CookingwithCarolyn
Darrel Ervin Oh yeah I've seen that too...not good. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch :)
I think I know exactly who you're speaking of...lol. I'm glad I came on here and heard her say wash the bag ones as well...great job. Will try the recipe tomorrow minus the pepper vinegar.
Thanks :)
I find the bagged greens are mostly stems. I quit buying them when I discovered that I was buying mostly "stems".
Every thing is good !
Awesome recipe from an awesome teacher ! Thankyou Carolyn for helping an old Pizzano make a great dish !
I can't wait to plant and harvest my collards cause I know exactly how I'm gonna cook them. Great video
Thank so much Hun! I'm glad you were able to do it and even more glad that you enjoyed it.
That's how we do collard greens at my house, except we like to split the stems several times, chop them up, and throw them in the pot first, then once they start getting a little soft, we put in the leaves.
Great idea!
you are the gurl! love ya. i'm a unemployed dad and i do all the cooking while mom works. my family loves my cooking.
I used this recipe yesterday with kale instead of collards and whooo chile...they were sooo good! This will be my staple for greens going forward. Thanks for posting!
Thanks Anita!
I'm using kale too! Let's see how it comes out!
I am so glad to read this. I live in Sweden and collards and mustards are not available. But, kale is. I miss greens. This is wonderful. I'm cooking this. Thank you!
Hi! I bought the turkey Wings smoked. They have them in the regular grocery stores. You don't have to smoke it yourself. Try the meat section in the store, they usually place all of the smoke meats together. Sending love from the U.S.
I am going to try cooking these.. my husband is from Mexico and he tasted this over thanksgiving. ..He loved it..
Thank you so much dear. Be sure and give it a try!
I love greens, any type!! I usualy make 4 to 2 combination collard & mustard greens w/sliced smoked ham shanks
iam puertorican and always loved when my friends made collard greens is been a long time since i seen them, and have been wanting to eat some thank you so much for taking your time to show us how to make it, when I seen the finished touch wanted to go to the store and make some it looks delious, thanks again
I love how you explain everything!
Oh yeah, it gives a nice fresh taste on top of the tender greens.
Video was great. Everyone’s spin is different. I always grew up adding seasonings after the greens had cooked down a bit.... I can’t wait to cook mine for Thanksgiving. Thanks for sharing!!!! 💜
First let me say I come from a LARGE Southern family. Both my parents were born in Georgia & pretty much every Sunday was like Thanksgiving at our house. We ate some type of greens every week & usually collards. I know how to make collards but after 40 something years I wanted something different. I made your recipe on Thanksgiving & let me tell you, these are BOMB! MY husband can't stop talking about them. Thank you so much for sharing your recipe.
I like what you said about washing it throughly. Good point. Nice video.
You bail me out every Thanksgiving with this collard green recipe. Thank you so much!
I've never tried collard greens I think I was just scared of the vegetable taste but I think I'm going to try it now! Love your spirit you're a natural teacher
+lbeltran Thanks so much :D
@@CookingWithCarolyn I just ran across your channel and subscribed with the quickness. Girl you know you can THROW DOWN !!! I love all of your recipes they are so easy to follow. @@CookingWithCarolyn Hi Carolyn, I just subscribed to your channel love everything you cook, PLEASE could you come out with step by step Cookbook, I would be first in line for purchase... I love your videos I wish you had your very own Cooking Show, you are just that awesome... May God continue to bless you and yours.
CookingWithCaroly
Thanks so much Stevie! I'm glad you enjoyed it ;) You're going to be great at cooking in no time.
Wow! I love your show! you make everything seems so easy and delicious! I am in my 60's and have only been introduced to 'soul food' in my late 50's (sadly so), through my job. then I was laid off and moved across the country. I am just now going crazy with these cooking channels on RUclips. I am preparing to do collard greens with the smoked turkey for the first time, your way!! thank you for explaining everything, especially washing the greens thoroughly! I might have accepted the prewashed bags of greens as being ok to use with no further washing! wish me luck and I'll be watching!
I've used a raw turkey leg, seasoned it and roasted it in the oven first. Then I put it in the greens to cook for a couple of more hours.
Those greens look delicious.
Thanks!
CookingWithCarolyn
Thank you for this recipe sis.
We are from NC and this is exactly the way my family does it with the pepper vinger. So good with that, that is a must for us. My Family(grandma and mother) makes the pepper and vinger and we use that. Thanks for the recipe.
wow pretty and can cook im going to make some today thanks good info on the bagged greens
My family cleaned the pot! Thanks for sharing your recipe, these greens were on point this past Sunday. Best I've ever made.
Amanda W Well alright now!
Thank you! This recipe will be added to my thanksgiving lineup!
Vanessa Johnson Good Vanessa! Nothin' like a good pots of greens to add to the menu ;)
Yess! I got a question im having a thanksgiving dinner at my house with all family and they love to eat its a total of 30 people how much greens will be enough and when should I get started on doing my thanksgiving dinner
You're going have to multiply this recipe by at least 5 times. You can do the greens on Tuesday for serving on Thursday. When you're multiplying a recipe be sure and multiply each ingredient by 5 EXCEPT the salt. Do the salt times 2 and add more later to your taste. Yeah I need to do a video on this.
Please Do! Thank you in Advance!
Just sat down as I wait on my greens to cook. Thank you!!
I feel like I can trust you lmao
+sylonjia odion LOL!
Same lmao
sylonjia odion why is this exactly what I said when I clicked on her video! 😂 She hasn’t steered me wrong yet 💪🏽
Hey Khloe! 🤗
Me too !! N her hair is really nice 👍🏽😍
This year my family was spread out all over and couldn't get together for the Holiday, so I thought I would try cooking something new for myself. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! I searched the internet and just like that other comment said, I felt like I can trust you. There is something about you Auntie. Thanks again! My greens turned out great!
So glad to hear that :)
You have a real phone on the wall, with the 12 foot cord! I miss that.
82Bottles Oh that phone has been long gone LOL Funny thing is the rest of the phones in the house were cordless even back then.
Dr. Steve Brule I remember having Bell telephone rotary dial wall phone in yellow
Thank you Carolyn 😍! My father used to cook collard greens when I was growing up in Detroit so I'm going to try your recipe to this Thanksgiving and my birthday falls on this day. Again thank you. God bless you 🙏❣️😍
very good delivery---easy to follow. looks delish! gonna do this one. you're a natural teacher. God bless and Happy Thanksgiving :)
+Vanessa Boyd thanks so much :)

+Nicole Darby Thanks Nicole :)
Great job Carolyn. I too use sugar in all my greens. Not to make them sweet, just for balance. They look real good! You go girl!
I have learned so much from watching your video's , i just wanna say thank you
You're welcome Ryan, glad I can help :)
Brilliant, i'm from the UK and for years i've heard people talking about collard greens, now i know how to make it. thnx
OMG...so glad i found this channel.
great videos! This is the fourth one I watched. You should have your own cooking show!
I am sure it would be a hit. The way that you flow thru the steps is very enjoyable to watch.
Then, the end result.......I would love to be the one holding the camera. They get fed well!
Keep it going. Nice job!
Wow this quality is aaamazing for 2010 lol... Sheesh, what a good camera! lol
I do trust her! She taught me how to make this fabulous meal! Comfort Food at it's finest.
Thank You, Carolyn! Angel from The Bay
Thanks so much Angel! 🤗
lord have mercy! ♡♡♡
@sangriakitten The cream corn helps with the moisture. You could use fresh corn on the cob by cutting the kernals from the cob but you'd have to use the back of a knife to scrap the juice from the corn cob (its alot of work but worth it). This is essentially how you make homemade creamed corn.
Girl ya making my mouth water
I agree
Got to try that cornbread receipe.! My grandmother always added some sugar to collards, mustard and turnip greens. Thanks for the recipes.
OK, I have a question, and, people, please, do NOT be offended !! I'm White and grew up, in Texas, eating & cooking ALL this and MORE, yet people, both Black and White always seem so surprised that I can cook all this and more. Name it, and I can cook it. I cook this better than regular old food. Collard Greens & ham hocks or smoked turkey wings w/ collard greens, cornbread, mac & cheese, red potatoes, ham & green beans, ham hocks & black-eyed peas. That is if we were lucky. Any of y'all eat butter or margarine with sugar sprinkled on the bread? Please NO body get offended. Just asking....
trilaw lawtri i eat it, my mom used to eat it as a kid and now me and my sister make it for a quick snack if we're hungry. we mix the sugar and cinnamon into the butter and spread it on the bread and toast it and it's really good
@Mcwillixms...Darn, I'm jealous. I never thought of putting cinnamon on the bread. We grew up putting margarine (UGH!) on bread, then sprinking sugar. Either we must have been starving or my memory is fading, but it tasted really good. I'm glad you and your sis are enjoying that. Here's another flavor from the past. Get a pack of cherry flavored Kool Aide, then pour sugar in the Kool Aide pack. It's silly to think of it now, but back then, young ladies were not allowed to wear make up till we were 16 or 17. But if you ate enough of that Kool Aide mixture, your lips were pinkish. Oh yes, your tongue would be the giveaway, bright red.... LOL
trilaw lawtri i dont think that would be offensive i would classify this food as Southern American food not black or white food
You are absolutely correct!!! Then, why do some people always call this "soul food"? That is what prompted my question, actually. I was at the Commissary at Fort Sam buying Collard Greens, and this 'lady' tried to argue that this is uniquely 'soul food'. I replied we been eating this ALL my life, and I KOW my great, great grandparents ate it. Anyway, I have always seen it a,s simply put as possible, GOOD OLD SOUTHERN food. Many thanks !!
trilaw lawtri soul food is southern food, yes it was made popular by the africans but they didnt start making it until they came over here (not being racist). But anyways black or white we still share the same style of food and that is called GOOD FOOD! THE BEST FOOD!
Anaheim peppers are longer and milder than small peppers. If you a need alternative you can use the juice off of the pepperoncinis in a jar or even the juice off of the pickled "california" mix (cauliflower, carrots, etc.) These choices are slightly spicy and can work in a pinch. Thanks Dear :)
naw she looks like she can cook
Kevin Smith LOL
Soul food! Comfort food! Prepared with love and it creates joy! Looks very good!
Dwayne Wladyka Thanks Dwayne :)
ive never seen anyone put tomatoes and onions on their greens ill have to try that
Add adds a little freshness to the cooked greens.
i made this last year and it was the best thing at thanksgiving dinner. I'm so glad i found this video again
I love my hot water cornbread
Yes!!!
Mmm mmm mmm you sho ain’t lyin I ain’t never had hot water cornbread till I moved to Cali because them Soulfood restaurants out there was Louisiana style
I gotta say I love the way you prepare your greens. My grandmother use to cook like this daily now a days if u ask her to cook you'll get cursed out... I can't wait to try this later today. Now I don't know about the pepper vinegar but here in South Carolina we use apple cider vinegar.
You fine AND you can cook a good pot of greens and conbread....that's right conbread...LOL! You need a brutha like me, like Big Melvin from Baby Boy.
MrSuckafree247 lol
