I was down there when the call went out. I was a voulenteer firefighter in Montgomery county. I listened to the scanner and when they said they needed more manpower me and my friends grabbed our gear and went down. When we offered our help considering they were short staffed the one chief told us he didn't want or need our help. I was very upset that we offered our help and he pushed us away
Tyree Thomas apparently they needed the help because they had mutual aid/stand by units from Mercer County. With fire showing like that mid day, with all volunteers, keep sending companies until I tell you to stop and then send 3 more. You can always recall.
Officers are 00 Chief, 10 Asst. Chief So 4510 is Seaside Parks Asst. Chief 4500 is the Chief of the Department. Engines are designated by 01, 11, 21, 31 etc. 4501 is an Engine. 05, 15, 25, 35 etc. specifies Ladder Trucks
@Jake - I agree 110%. The early minutes are critical in getting enough resources on the way... you can always turn them around if not needed. 4510 let his pride cloud his judgement. Now he will be known around town as the guy who let a structure fire turn into a conflagration.
Are there other frequencies that might have carried any condition reports? We know from television what it looked like, but no one ever reported the magnitude of this fire to reponding fire service.
Boardwalk Structure Fire Initial Response (1st alarm) should be 5 engines, 2 ladders, 1 heavy rescue, 1BLS & 2 BCs. When confirmed,"working fire dispatch" should automatically be sent to include a rit/fast team, another engine & truck, air cascade, rehab unit, 3rd BC; AND the "second alarm units" should move up to man the first alarm station. This boardwalk burnt down in 1955 & now... they need very aggressive response assignments on this boardwalk, pre-planning & tabletop exercises.
They are all Volunteers. They have four digits to indicate their Department/Station number and the second two digits indicate what type of apparatus it is. ex: Engine, Ladder, Brush, Rescue or officer. It is a countywide numbering system that is very effective.
I agree Jake. We have GOT to change the way we do our thing here in S. Jersey. In most places numerous companies are dispatched on a calls. Especially structure fires. But down here we send one company on everything. And when you mention it you get told either it's always been that way or to just leave it alone. I have been to many places and we seem to be the only places where only one company is sent. We also seem to be totally screwed up with EMS. No FD based EMS. All hospital. DUH!
I personally know this boardwalk (I live 10 minutes away). The dispatcher did a GREAT job! She asked the right questions, but got the wrong answers. This was a totally BAD fire!
Does anyone know of 4510 is still in the fire service these days? That chief showed what happens when you let your ego take over. He didn’t want his company getting beat to their fire. So he allowed the fire to grow and put his own firefighters at risk with no backup. He should have been arrested for his decision making that day.
So everyone realizes, early on.. around the 15:30 mark, you hear a unit "1131" responding "short crew" 1131 is a Barnegat FD Engine that had nothing to do with the response in Seaside. This was an unrelated incident. I cant link any websites but if you go to Radio Reference you can search their Wiki for Ocean County NJ and it'll give you a great breakdown of company and apparatus numbers. Hope this helps!
I am sorry but command did a poor job the first few minutes.. They delayed the response of 44 and then held another company at station, 69 I think. And look what happened. Better safe than sorry. More resources should have been called earlier....
They are All volunteers. The first 2 numbers are the station number--the second two are the officers----4501 is probably station 45's deputy or assitant chief. Something like that is used for incident command. With the convention going on in Wildwood--I doubt if there were enough initial OFFICERS to establish an effective command structure.
Who is Car 14 and Car 12 in relation to this incident? 4510 didnt seem to be to aggressive in getting more companies in this incident early on. Wind conditions seemed high at the beginning of this incident. Am I wrong?
I guess I don't understand their unit designations. Is this a mix of paid and volunteer units?. Why does any Fire Service need 4 digit unit designations? Takes a longer time just to give your unit number.
That devastating fire happened mostly in Seaside Park. Seaside Heights enjoyed most of the sympathy for the fire, while Seaside Park got no sympathy. Poor reporting.
Whatever happened to a pre-plan for such an event.??? Surely the wind speed and the direction of the wind--should have called for a north sector set up----JUST AS A PRECAUTION-----We can see that it got away from them--and they weren't ready for it. The convention in Wildwood was probably the reason for manpower issues----so calling for mutual aid QUICKLY--should have been made. Leading off with small diameter hose was another BOO-BOO. These are BASIC MISTAKES.
Sounds like old time dispatching and favoritism. They neen the phantom box system. Next closest goes. Who sends one station to a building fire? Listen to bucks county. Thats how its done

Awesome job by ALL fire departments!! Yes, "Ocean Terrace" Is the place where the MTV show takes place.

A town like seaside should have fully staffed firehouses, especially with the population density during summer.

I am a firefighter in seaside heights and went down there to help
Tyfys...

Car 11, 12, and 14 are county fire coordinators
Google "Ocean County Station Numbers" - first result is naming convention for apparatus and stations.
Leo Stapleton said in one of his books that sometimes your going make a parking lot!! Bad day for everyone!

I disagree. The town has been doing well with Volunteers for many years. There is no reason for them to be disbanded.
Why? It didnt seem like they had any problem getting firefighters there quickly...
Sounds like 4510 had to tell the Dispatchers what Stations to send. Don't they have a working CAD system for Fire Dispatch?
And when I say EMS I mean ALS service. Not BLS.
ahem, arson

QUICK response! Cool! Dispatcher states time: "14:20". Respondant states time "14:20"
No one knows who Manny Freed is anymore...
Sounds like old time dispatching and favoritism. They neen the phantom box system. Next closest goes. Who sends one station to a building fire? Listen to bucks county. Thats how its done
Terrible fire ground management. Maney Freed must be rolling over in his grave.
