  • Learning how to choose (and then mix!) the right colors for a painting is one of the hardest parts of working with watercolor. And, it is often even more difficult when we are trying to create outside. After painting outside for over ten years, I've learned some tips and techniques for making this process easier and more fun. In this video I walk you through my thought process for how to choose the colors for this beautiful landscape of Mount Rainier in Washington State, and how to mix some of the lovely colors!
This is also an excerpt from a 2.5 hour Adventure Art Academy lesson where I share the entire painting process - from composition to colors, sketch, and step-by-step painting instruction. You can learn more at www.adventureartacademy.com. I share a new class each month AND students get access to the entire library of classes (20 and counting!)- the cost is $24.50/month.
The colors I use for this painting are made by Daniel Smith, and purchased from Blick: bit.ly/blick-c...
    Quinacridone Rose
    Phthalo Blue Red Shade
    Ultramarine Blue
    Cobalt Blue
    New Gamboge
    Hansa Yellow Medium
The palette is the Folio Palette made by Art Toolkit! (use code ARTOFHIKING10 at www.arttoolkit.com for 10% off their products).

Wow beautiful painting and colors! This is a great lesson on watercolor mixing. You make it seem so easy. I can't wait to put your tips into practice. I really want to know how you do reflections. Do you have any tips?

Thank you for the note, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Reflections are, to me, one of the hardest things to paint because it is hard for many of our brains to sketch and paint the lines of a mirror image. So, I use a tool that I always have with me - my Phone! It might sound a little odd, but here's how I tackled this reflection, and it worked really well for my students, too:
I start by painting the upper part of the scene. This way I have the colors, shapes, and patterns for reference. Then, I take a photo on the phone, turn the page upside down, AND turn the phone upside down. Now, I look at the upside down phone and my painting as my references more than the actual scene. This works so well because it allows me to paint the reflection just like a normal mountain, and helps me focus on replicating the mountain I actually painted on my page instead of what my mind thinks it should look like! I personally have a REALLY hard time painting reflections when the painting is right side up, because my brain just wants to paint an exact replica of the top and not make the flip. I always used to mess up a bunch of shapes and lines. But, once I found the phone and rotated page trick I can short circuit those mistakes and it is so much easier now!
      I hope that helps!

Is this from last season? These area are still snowy aren’t they? I wanna go , but I think I have to wait until June

Last year yes!!! I think it was near the end of July, and snow was as still lingering in shady areas. The avalanche lilies were in peak so I think snow had just recently melted. Right now this spot is under much much snow as you say!! Pending the snow year you may have to wait into July, or possibly deal with snow travel!
