    Such a beautiful tutorial. I was amazed at some of the textures and edges you were able to achieve working wet/damp. Blown away to see you were using strathmore 300 paper. I am a beginner/intermediate painter but have been using Arches. Arches has been wonderful in allowing me to grow as an artist but now that I have better water control I think I may have to revisit my Strathmore 300 and 400. Arches sometimes takes too long to dry and blends colors too much. You remind me that a good artist can use the traits of any paper to their advantage.

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  Год назад

      Yes, I learned on Strathmore 300 because it was what I could afford at the time (and I personally don’t like the 400 series).
      Arches is great and I use that a lot now along with Legion Stonehenge paper (current fav). Both are 100% cotton and acid free, which is what you want for a finished, client piece.

    I'm a beginner discovered your feed , found it very helpful, and subscribed. I. tried this landscape as a practice exercise. Very helpful and pleased it turned out as well as it did but ended up overworking it, so I've practiced some of the elements separately, for a while..trees, clouds, washes, so Im trying it for second time to see if I can do it a little faster and fresher. I encounter two problems I've encountered before. I know you made this quite awhile ago, but if you are still responding to this thread, I wondered if you could give me some pointers. One is the clouds. I've tried this method before but I don't think I wet the tissue. The last few times I tried it with the damp tissue it picked up pigment but within the lifted area, it left a pattern of blue "holes" that I couldn't lift out. I softened them a bit but even going back after it was dry I couldn't scrub them out completely. If they hadn't looked so much the same size and shape they could have been incorporated into shadows. Is my tissue not wet enough, or the paper too wet or dry? The second issue I've encountered before is the paint drying to fast I can't move it across the page to get the effects you do. I used a Neptune wash brush, not a quill, but hold lots of water, and I wet the paper well but it dries so fast I can't even go in and soften the edges like you did, without cauliflowering.. I used a mostly dry brush to pick up most of the moisture to stop it from getting too obvious, but I couldn't keep the paper wet enough to get the effects from moving it across the page

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  Год назад

      Hi Susan! Welcome-all great questions. I can’t answer the tissue/cloud issue exactly without seeing it myself but I think it’s either too much rubbing on the paper beforehand (creating scars on the paper) or a towel that is too wet. My tissue/towel is only damp enough to soften the edges and should still pick up plenty of pigment-not wet enough to disperse any.
      The second issue sounds like a paper quality issue. Some papers just don’t stay wet long enough. It’s a shame and super frustrating, but not all watercolor paper is created equal. I recommend looking into a higher quality paper OR you can wet the entire paper before you start with a spray/mist bottle and gently (so as not to scar the paper) use a brush to spread the water before you begin to apply pigment. Make sure the paper is nice and wet before you apply pigment and avoid the cauliflower or bloom by tapping your brush on a paper towel before applying it to your paper (video on this coming soon with more details!)

      Yay! I’m hoping to experiment a little today or this weekend so I hope to have a tutorial up by February or March (after I re-learn how this medium works! Lol)
      I do know/remember that you need to check the TYPE of gouache you are using. If you’re pairing it with watercolor, you need to make sure you are using watercolor gouache and not acrylic or you will start to run into problems (unless you’re a master of mixed media, I suppose!)

    Hi there, total watercolor noob here. Around 21:30 you described creating depth in the foliage with a darker pigment, it seemed like the depth came from almost wiping away some of the paint in the trees rather than adding dark pigment, were you using a dry brush on slightly wet paint to sort of create highlights? Or was there actually color in the brush, maybe just at the tip? How to create those little details are what are always lacking in my paintings. Thank you for making this video!

    • @katrinacrouch
      @katrinacrouch  2 года назад

      Some of the paint was picked up, yes-but my goal was to add the deeper tones to set off and create highlights (which happened, thankfully). You CAN pick up wet paint, but I find that to be a less consistent technique and better for larger gradients rather than highlights (most of the time). Glazes-light layers of pigment-are a great way to build up that illusion of texture to allowing each layer of color to overlap imperfectly. I have another landscape filmed and waiting to be edited that will come out in October that goes into more detail about how I get that effect 🙂
      Sorry it can’t be sooner-my 2 year oldslimit my daily work load, hah! Love them but it’s the truth!
