Again, I am aware and perfectly fine with the fact that God of War has taken certain liberties with Norse Mythology. The only purpose of this video was to educate people who thought that Thor in Norse Mythology was a murderous tyrant like in God of War. And obviously there is some doubt as to whether or not the information we were presented with is accurate as Mimir and Laufey are unreliable narrators given their grudges with the Aesir. But the game never puts these accounts into question, leaving the average player to believe them and thus assume that this is how the gods were like in Norse Mythology. Again you may not have believed the depiction of the gods to be fact, but I’ve seen many people, including a few big name reviewers, imply that they believed these accounts to be factual.

You know GoW is not, and has never attempted to be, an accurate retelling of whatever mythology it's based on right? That's like pointing out that Thor was never an Avenger or that Dragon Ball isn't exactly like Journey to the West, like we don't already know that. It's not, "getting it wrong" when it's clearly and deliberately a different take on the characters/myths.

I mean just because he released hope back into the world doesn't erase the evils. so in turn this alternate history loops into infinitum cause ares was a stupid prick. this also gives credence to why zues would betray gaea after she helped him. and why zues dad was a prick if it went far enough.

What you said in the beginning about Kratos just wanting to kill the gods wasn't just because he felt like it. Back in the original God Of War games. He swore an oath to Ares to kill his enemies and his life would be in debt to Ares. After he defeated his enemies Kratos became power hungry destroying any threat to him, later on Kratos attacks a village that had supposedly been a camp for Athenien soldiers, he killed everyone there in a blind rage and killed his wife and daughter, when he realized what he done. Ares told him that he wanted to test how much of a warrior Kratos was and after being cursed by a witch with the ashes of his family permanently on his body and given the fabled name "Ghost of Sparta." After that he vowed to kill the gods and rid himself of the nightmares of him killing his daughter and wife. It wasn't just because he felt like it.

You got some of those wrong there. Ares tricked Kratos to attack the village of worshipers of Athena so he could kill his wife and daughter whom Ares put in the temple without him acknowledging, it was revealed in Ascension that Ares made Kratos kill his family so he could be separated from any bonds that could prevent him from becoming a perfect warrior whom Ares sought to overthrow Zeus. Kratos swore to kill the rest of Olympian Gods (especially Zeus) after what they done to his mother (Callisto) and brother (Deimos) and the Olympians refused to get rid of his nightmare despite the fact that he done so many deeds for them for years like when he saved their lives when Atlas tried to destroy the world after being tricked by Persephone and he also had to sacrifice his only chance to see his daughter to do so.

i think the title is incredibly misleading, it should be more like "whats the difference between god of war and nose mythology as its known" because all the "true" versions of norse mythology exist within the game, mimir tells the story about Hrungnir as you mention, but you leave out the part where atreus in that scene says "thats an awful story mimir nothing like the ones mother used to tell me" to which he replies "truth is seldom so pretty as myth and legend" the whole point of the game is to make you rethink all the stories we have read or been told. either way pointing out the "Right" version of mythology is already ridiculous, i just think the title makes it seem like the developers researched about as much of norse mythology as you did their game...

What people don't realize is that God of War has its own myth. So similar to the original Myth, but with some changes. And besides, do ya'll realize how boring and unsatisfying it would be to kill gods if they weren't assholes?
For example, Kratos was actually a god in the real Greek mythology, but a lesser known god. So, his name was given light as a son of Zeus and the conqueror of Olympus. Or like how Kratos' son Atreus is apparently Loki. Atreus is a cause of Baldur's death, but not the person to actually kill Baldur, just like Loki in the original Myth (the blind guy killed Baldur, not Loki himself). God of War re-wrote that part of Norse Myth's history.
Atreus' mother is Faye, who is based off of Laufaye in the original Myth (Loki's mother), and the name of Loki's father means "Cruel Striker", which fits Kratos. Replacing characters of the original myth with certain characters in "God of War" is an example of how the game took the original myth, and sculpted its own out of it.

    • @thatoneLerrydude
      @thatoneLerrydude 6 лет назад

Also the name of Kratos writen in the prophecy wall is actually Fárbauti. They got the Myths and gave their own spin still trying to make everything fit, as if they were the real thing instead of the "story told by the people". We should even notice that even the jötunn lie a lot in their Shrines, as even their side of Hrimthur story is "made" to look like he died in a epic battle with the Aesir, while Mimir who saw the whole incident tell the "real story" behind the fact.

I don't know what mythology you read but Kratos isn't a god, he is a son of Styx and Pallas and a personification of strength and brother to Bia (Force), Nike(victory) and Zelus(Zeal). So essentially a Titan. Zeus allowed them to continue existing because they helped in his victory against the Titans. Though his character is right in the games as ruthless and merciless. Though he was just a lackey to Zeus nothing more and nowhere near his son sooooo, Ares is a little bitch that even humans injured and the rest were neutral good gods with the tendency to forget that humans were alive and not puppets (though in the stories either another god or a human reprimanded and told the god who forgot otherwise)... knowing this who gives an f if the game is accurate, its fantasy nothing more nothing less. Great video. You explained the mythology behind Thor very nicely. While I do understand that the depiction of Thor in God of War made him out to be a bad guy, its worth noting that we still haven't formally encountered him. Everything we heard about him was from the dialogue of people who were against him (Mimir's tales, Kratos's biased opinion of Gods in general, the spirit who wanted you to destroy Thor's statue etc.) Granted, I don't mean that any of them were wrong about Thor, but if there's anything to understand about this game series, its that these stories have a lot of complicated perspectives. I mean Kratos himself wasn't a saint. He was a damaged guy who made bad choices sometimes. He isn't a good or bad guy necessarily. That's what's so interesting here, depending on the way you look at things, the God of War series and the mythologies that it portrays are full of characters who aren't clear cut good or bad guys. I'm very interested in seeing what Thor is truly like when we meet him properly down the line.

We all need to see the other side of the coin. I say in the next game, we look at the perspective of those in Asgard and the things they need to do to impede Ragnorok. The Jötunn see Thor as a killer, Thor sees them as a threat to all of the Nine Realms.
Mimir says he wants to burn down Asgard, Odin sacrifices his eye in the Well to gain wisdom and knowledge to help save the gods and what ever else.
Kratos ‘knows’ how the gods think, even though he’s done probably worse things than them.

Hey man, First i'd like to say, that it's nice that You want to correct how Thor and the Gods were shown in the Game. But the Main Point in God of War is, to have Reasons for Kratos to hate And to kill them. And they did actually a real Good Job with the research. Like with the World Serpent And Ragnarok, with Baldur and the only Thing that can Kill him. But it's since the First God of War Clear, that it's not accurate and it never was soupossed to be in the Games. That't the Main Point. They tell there own Story inwich the most Gods are Evil And Cruel and Selfish. But like i said, they use alot of the Myths Teach here And there some Points of it, that are like in the Myths and Change alot. Of course everyone needs to be careful to not believe the Story of the Games completly And has to research on his own. So i'm not sure what your Point is. Is it, that You want it to be more or completly acurate or that You want to Remind People, that alot of the Myths about Thor were Changed?

Odin's characterization in God of War is on point, since Odin was a manipulative bastard at times. Thor even though he's seen as a hero by mankind...would certainly be branded a murderer...a bloodthirsty brute by the Jotun.

Obviously in the myths he's much more heroic, but to be fair when you do read the myths, Thor DOES often do a lot of Giant killing, and sometimes his rashness tends to result in the deaths of others (I seem to recall during Baldur's death, he kicked a dwarf into a pyre out of frustration over losing his brother, burning it to death). Santa Monica Studios clearly just wanted to work with that more vague stuff and portray it as "no, what if they actually were way worse than you thought." Gives the player an excuse to fight Gods.

@Norvin Hobbs Yes that's what is missing, antagonize the followers of the Abrahamic religions so this senseless game will disappear, be banned and really finished.
Maybe Kratos ought to fight the Hindu gods too and antagonize the Hindus, since the god Indra has many characteristics in common with Zeus.
Many writers in past centuries were of the opinion that Zeus or Jupiter was the same as one the first important Biblical patriarchs, but his story was changed to be compatible with monotheism. Not many people realize that for now, but I think this fact will be gradually known and recognized in the (near) future. So in this sense the god of war game is already encroaching on existing religions and on Abrahamic religions.
In any case, whether one is religious or not, this game is a violent mindless pointless game and it will be dealt with conveniently and appropriately in the next few decades.

I do have one thing I wanna point out. Greek Mythology is depicted not much differently than how they depicted Norse Mythology. Not all the God in Greek Mythology are depicted as tyrants and such. Many where looked at as true figure head. Hades for example was not as cruel and grotesque as they depicted him in God of War. He was simply a man who had a job to do to keep the world going and he did it.

Other than that you're just pointing out some facts that weren't even mentioned in the game itself, so I'm having a hard time understanding what they got wrong about Thor? Just because you're going more in-depth in some stories that were told in God of War doesn't make the game "wrong" about Thor. The game not including a story about Thor won't make them wrong either. While God of War presents them as the "real" gods from the true mythology (we all know, they were nothing like that, but it's the game's universe), Marvel presents them as aliens basically, powerful, but still mortal beings, who inspired the human mythology instead of coming from it.
*Reality* (and GoW to some extent): mythology came first, true "immortal" gods (immortal as not dieing naturally, but still could be slain by Kratos for example).
*Marvel:* aliens came first and inspired there respective mythologies.
Yes, in both cases are liberties to be taken, because the real mythological gods were nothing like that, but that's just the way the creators of said franchises worked things out. They took inspiration in existing mythologies and bent them to fit their own ideas.

Very good and interesting video. This doesn't take anything from the real Norse stories but I myself saw God of War's interpretation of things as a "what if the Gods were real" scenario, where humanity's accounts exist but were mere fantasies or embellishments . And the stories we are told would be the "truest" stories, even if without Odin's and Thor's account of events.
Sort of goes in hand with Kratos' pov and acceptance of the chaotic nature of the world and it's people, and actually made it one of the most interesting and believable Norse fiction works to me. Just my take on it. I did find it a shame Giants seemed to be portrayed so benevolently though, although the series is just beginning and going by the end I suspect that perspective might change later on.

I happen to recall Kratos mentioning to Atreus, after helping one of the restless spirits, that there are "two sides to every story."
Throughout the course of the game, we are told everything about the Aesir from a very one sided point of view. Mimir, Freya, Atreus, and the World Serpent all loath the Aesir gods, but could it be that there is more to them than meets the eye? Baldur mentions how "fucked up" his family is, right after Atreus shot Kratos with an arrow out of sheer rage. Perhaps that will make more sense if we hear their side of things in the next game.

TLDR All myths are over exaggerated tales of historical fiction.
    Let me explain.
What you need to understand about myths is that they are written as metaphors for ancient battles that are no longer remembered accurately. The worlds oldest game of telephone where the winners decide what "acceptable" history and mythology are. Neither Marvel nor Sony have accurate depictions of Thor because of 2 things. Creative Liberty(to change aspects to suit the new medium) and Origin Bias(which versions of the myth you prefer to believe) there will never be accurate depictions of Thor unless you happen to build a time machine, find him and follow him on his IRL version of the journey(which factually will have no mythical aspects to the events in question)

God of War always tends to bend the laws quite a bit but you are kinda wrong with Norse Mythology, yes I agree that the Gods saw humans as allies they were still somewhat Tyrannical, they kept many laws over nature and man that were not necessary and often forced mankind into battle as bloodshed was how the gods were worshiped, and not only that they dictated the afterlife with serious scrutiny, if you didn't die a warrior you didn't go to Valhalla, if you died of sickness or age you would go to the good side of Hellheim if you didn't you would go to the bad side, so in other words if you were building a house for someone else and you fell and died you would be condemned to a fate similar to hell itself, at least the greeks were generous in this regard as if you lived a benevolent life you would go to Elysium

Seriously, why do everyone have to twist Tor for their universes? Wouldn't it be better if God of War had made it more of a grey instead of making it so black and white.
Would be interesting to see actually just Baldur being so out of touch because he couldn't feel anything that he was alone going against Kratos. Then because of Kratos slaying him, he got the raft of Asgard on him because he killed Baldur and doomed them to Ranarok, personally find that a little bit more instresting. You could even leave a lot of the story be the same way it was.
Like I love the story of God of War, though I think a more complex situation would have been more interesting.

Stories thst have been passed down by generations by this single perspective of mortals. God of war gives the perspective of the supposed 'enemy' of the these gods. Nothing is black and white, its always a grey which has been a consistent theme with all the gow games.

Also, think about putting yourself in Baldur’s shoes. How would you feel being an immortal? Pretty cool! Now you can do anything forever! If I remember correctly in the myths Odin needed an army to fight in Ragnarok so he started wars among mankind and created Valhalla to store half of all the war dead who fell in battle so that he could build his army. The Gods are mighty but they are not innocent for the only innocents in any of the nine branches of Yggdrasil or beyond are the newborn babe come to the world as fresh as fallen snow. They are at war, and in war one does the most terrible things if they believe it is for the greater good. The same can be said for the Aesir, the Vanir and the Dwarves. Thor is a hero, but even heroes do terrible things, no one leaves this life with hands untainted.
