Agreed. It's normally really easy to pick out contrast paint jobs. This doesn't have that monotone, mildly splotchy look. I'm going to have to experiment with this for my hobby skillset.
I know all if not all the tricks from this video but it is very nice to watch when it is being presented that well. Thank you and looking forward to more!
theres not really anyone that does exclusively speed painting stuff (not that you have to do exclusively speed painting) to THIS level so yeah these little tricks make for great watching@@MattsHobbyHour . its quite funny really absolutely nothing like this existed in the 90s
Yea take that part with a grain of salt... nevertheless it is good looking and probably didn't take too long compared to other models with even more depth and highlight
This was excellent! I had never considered mixing standard paints in with the Contrast paints like that, but it opens up so many other possibilities. Great color scheme!
These seem like easily achievable results. I personally love videos that show easy, yet great looking painting schemes that I feel like most normal mortals can reproduce 😊
Never thought of shading Gold with Magos Purple, cant wait to try that out. Also really like the tint technique with Nazdreg Yellow and Seraphim Sepia. Great job!
I've really been enjoying your tutorials for the two saurus models and i think tonight is the night ill finally stop procrastinating and do a test run using the techniques youve shown here. Looking forward to seeing whats next on the channel. Cheers!
This looks amazing! Thanks for sharing the tips! That purple around the mouth and eyes is such a small/ quick step but I feel like it added a ton of depth! Can't wait for more videos!
I really liked this tutorial. Showing how to paint quickly and get a great result is so helpful. Also like seeing something that’s in the fantasy D&D genre….
Very nice man! Id love to see more recipes made from mixing contrasts and color schemes. :) Love hove simple techniques makes it look so good! Keep it up!
I liked the tip of going back with white to highlight details after dry-brushing. I'll try that. Makes sense since you're using contrast paints and shades. I never considered that.
Really cool video, one of the best looking speed painting jobs I have seen so far, and you explained very good what you were doing and why you were doing it. Would love to see more!
Thanks! That's a good question. I really like the look of the red mounts on those new skink riders, so I'd probably go that route. Maybe an orange-red with tan undersides for the mounts/monsters. And for the skinks... probably similar to the Saurus, but maybe lighter and a little bit more of a yellow green. Lots to think about!
Hey just wanted to comment that I love your videos and your approach. I'm all about the techniques that are smart not hard, and you just absolutely nail that painting style.
This was GREAT! I'm looking for EXACTLY this type of painting. It's at great way to involve my kids and gets great results that we're all happy with! I subscribed for this video and hope to see more. Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful! Thank you so much for watching. Glad to hear the kids are getting involved in mini painting too. I'll have plenty more videos like this coming soon.
Speed painting is my favorite genre of painting videos. Would be cool to see some models from other ranges than gw or even 3d printed minis. Great video!
This is a great painting tutorial, really like your approach, and I've subscribed to your channel. I personally would love your approach to painting ork skin.
Thanks! I have a lot of Tyranids up on the channel already. And some Skaven are on my to-do list, hopefully in the next couple months. Thanks for watching!
Would it also work with a classic slap chop? Prime in black dry brush grey and then dry brush white and then the white highlights. I´m wondering if it would look as what you did 😅😂
Thanks for watching! That's what 20 years of commission painting will do to you... lol. I posted a termagant speed painting video in real time if you want to see that in action. Thank you for subscribing!
@@MattsHobbyHour that would be sick, especially if you went with something other than white! Most of the extant tutorials pant them up as one sees on the tin.
Great suggestion! I have some Eldar in the works right now actually. It's not speed or contrast though. I'll have to make a speed guide some time soon!
great idea! That would be a really cool combination. I'm working up a blue and grey scheme right now, but I think a black and orange scheme would be a great one to try out next. Thanks for watching!
Give mixing a shot some time! It's faster than you think. I have a video on how to mix a whole pot of custom colors; if you're doing an army it makes things way easier... you'll only have to mix it once!
I really like the more muted tones when compared to the vibrant blues on the box art. I'm thinking I'd like to do that for some seraphon, but I'm not sure how I could desaturate the contrast paints. My first thought is a mix of basillicanum grey + blue contrast + contrast medium in varying parts. Could that work?
Yes I think that would work. You might want to check out my video on painting Stone Trolls/Rockgut Troggoths. I painted those in a muted bluish grey and I think the recipe would translate well to Seraphon. Good luck with your army!
Great video, and the final result is even better. One suggestion I'd make though, not related at all to technique, is to see if you can find some of the earth/ground textures made by Vallejo for their Diorama Effects line. For about 50-60% more cost compared to a bottle of Stirland Mud, you get a small tub containing over *eight times* as much of the stuff. So if you're going to be doing much painting over it anyway, might as well go for the cheaper stuff. (Plus it's even a pretty good adhesive for adding rocks or whatever to the base, as well, making it easy to just sink them in.)
Thanks for watching! And thank you for the suggestion. I got a bottle of the vallejo stuff recently, just using up some old GW stuff that I had lying around. The price is definitely a good thing. On most of my armies I still tend to do glue/sand though... maybe I'm just a creature of habit.
I definitely get that, about being a creature of habit, as I used to do pretty much the same thing back in the day. I just found that for myself, the Vallejo textures sit precisely at the sweet spot where my basic cheapness and laziness intersect, so my bases almost always start with some variety of that stuff. 🙂 (Having (once) tried one of GW's crackle texture paints, though, I did think they were pretty good, although still horribly overpriced by volume compared to their competitors. Generally speaking I actually don't even think their paint is as expensive as it seems from first glance, since it's so thick you end up getting a lot more out of it than you might expect by volume, but their texture paints and varnishes, to say nothing of their airbrush thinner, are just wildly overpriced.)
@@JamesS-rt8jp yeah it is a little overpriced compared to alternatives. I do use a lot of both. The tricky thing is when making a video, I want to try and use supplies that are the most accessible to everyone. In most cases that is Games Workshop. Advanced hobbyists have the knowledge to substitute products, but a beginner might not be able to.
I definitely hear that. But while I'd hesitate to call myself advanced in anything except age, I have learned a few tricks and figured it wouldn't hurt to pass that one on, since the cost savings of one tub of the Vallejo goop is enough to buy a full-price box of, I don't know, Space Marines or what have you... if, as you point out, you can get it as opposed to GW products, which are pretty ubiquitous. (That being said, I wasn't surprised to hear you knew about said alternative, but figured adding it in a comment might help someone else at least. Worst case scenario, maybe I've managed to boost your video's profile a bit with RUclips's Mr. Al G. O'Rithm, thereby pushing it ever so slightly up the ranks, which one would hope can't hurt. 🙂)
@@JamesS-rt8jp That's a great point! Thank you for sharing and please feel free to keep sharing in the future. The more information we can have out there, the better.
