Filter ‘Take a Picture’
Prior to forming the band Filter in the early 90’s Richard Patrick would play guitar in the band Nine Inch Nails. While Trent Reznor would lead the band, Patrick would play on their debut album, appear in their early music videos and tour with the band over the course of 4 years from 1989 to 1993. After leaving Nine Inch Nails Patrick would go to form Filter and while they would have a good deal in the success in the 90’s they hit some turbulent times. Those turbulent times would inspire the band’s biggest hit ‘Take a Picture.’ Let’s explore the history of the song in today’s video. .
Living in Cleveland in the 80’s Richard Patrick become a member of the city’s music scene playing in a nu-wave band called The Act. He would soon have a chance meeting with another local musician named Trent Reznor at a music store who was playing a new wave pop act called Exotic Birds. Reznor would soon start his own band forming Nine Inch Nails and nabbed a deal with TVT Records who put out the band’s debut record Pretty Hate Machine in 1989. Patrick would join Nine Inch Nails make a brief appearance on the record on the track Sanctified and toured with the band staying with the group until 1993. Despite being part of a multiplatinum band, Patrick was dirt poor making $400 a month as a hired hand. It was at this point he had come up with a 4 song demo and left the band and soon signed his own recording contract with Atlantic owned Reprise Records taking Nine Inch Nails programmer Brian Leisgang with him.
In 1995 Filter would release their debut album Short Bus that would go platinum thanks to the single Hey Man Nice Shot. Four years would go by until the band released their follow up, 1999’s Title of Record. The long time between releases was attributed to a few factors.
Brian Leisgang left the group around 1997 after creative differences with Patrick
Drummer Matt Walker left and joined the smashing pumpkins to replace fired drummer Jimmy Chamberlin
Richard Patrick had spent a good deal of time building his own studio.
By Patrick’s own admission he wanted to always be in a band and not just have a group of hired hands. He would tell Spin ‘the only person talking to me was my girlfriend. I got so unbelievably depressed.” His first true love according to the magazine soon broke up with him. It would result in the track i’m not the only one. Touring members ,s guitarist Geno Lenardo, bassist Frank Cavanagh would take a bigger role in songwriting for the band’s second album named- Title of Record.
With Title of Record Filter didn’t want to repeat the sound of the band’s first album with frontman richard patrick telling billboard We had to goals in mind - make something for the fans and make something we are proud of. Something that shows our growth. Short-bus was a tall punk rock black record but it’s very early 20’s and juvenile sounding. ‘Title’ takes people to a new place with a ton of hills and valleys. The album would feature of course more electronic music, bombastic, acoustic and 70’s era sounding songs.
The lyrics on the group’s second album also took on a more serious tone with Patrick telling billboard “i think i took lyrics more seriously this time around as well. A lot of them are based on everyday things that happened in my life like breaking up with a girlfriend, getting angry or feeling like i’ve lost control of my life.I am the mouthpiece of this band and I’m always trying to answer the questions I have about life.
Title of Record would be another success thanks to the single Take a Picture which became Filter’s biggest hit to date peaking at number 12 on the billboard hot 100 charts. The album also produced another hit in welcome to the fold resulting in the album going platinum. Lenardo would tell billboard about the band’ s change in sound on the second album saying ‘everybody was expecting another hey man nice shot and we went in the complete opposite direction…some people probably felt alienated and they shouldn’t a good song is a good song. It doesn’t matter if we play it harder or softer or use distortion or not.
No shit, I woke up this morning with "Take a Picture" stuck in my head.
Mine was easy lover by Phil Collins and I didn't know the name of the song or artist
@@ryanb9749 Can't go wrong with Phil Collins!
My dreams aren't as vivid as they used to be, but I still often remember an old song in a dream and then wake up with that song stuck in my head.
@@ryanb9749love Easy Lover, great Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey from Earth Wind and Fire song
@@ryanb9749I woke to "the Harlem Shuffle" in my mind by Bob and Earl.
@@jesseswarbrick7895great memories of that song.
Not a big fan of the band, but 'Take a Picture' is one of the most blissful, wholesome, good-vibe songs I've heard. Has a spiritual feel to me, never get tired of it
I won a radio contest in '99 where they played a set of 5 songs in a studio for a handful of us. They were really cool and they signed all kinds of stuff for us - still have short bus and title of record signed as well as guitar picks and drum sticks from them. They surprised us by giving us all access passes to their show that night too!
Take a Picture was the first Filter song I ever heard, and based on that song I assumed they only made ballads in that vein. Boy was I ever so pleasantly surprised to find out they were actually an Alternative Rock band with Industrial Rock nuances.
That being said, I still enjoy Take a Picture. Great song to listen to on a Friday night.
Great choice story for a Friday, Sid!
Thanks! We got some obscure punk coming next week with a HUGE band from the early 2000s next week I have never covered. Actually both are brand new bands I’ve never done
@@rnrtruestories 🤘🏻👍🏻🥶
Take A Picture is a fantastic song
Short Bus didnt leave my CD player for years. Amazing album, it was my friend in college
Title Of Record is a masterpiece 🤘
I wrote a pop punk cover version of this song for my band to play but unfortunately we broke up before we could record it or play it live. I don't boast about many things but man I love what I wrote for that intro riff.
Well u should record it & post it on u tube😊
I'd def like to hear what u have done with the song (arrangement) 😎
You did it again. Thank you for covering this topic!
My pleasure!
The most random fact in the whole world is the lead singer for Filter's brother is the T-1000 from Terminator 2
I still listen to Title of Record. It has some fantastic songwriting and production throughout.
I saw Filter at the second Family values tour and they killed it. They were even better when I saw them deadline their own tour for this album! Simon Says opened up for them- great band that didn’t take off much
I remember this song from "Little Nikki." Man, what a great soundtrack.
I saw Filter open for White Zombie in the 90s. Their lead singer said "f you" and dropped the mic and left the stage mid song. Later, Rob Zombie was telling us in the nosebleeds to get up out of our seats. We didnt and he told us to "f" ourselves. $50 to be told off by 2 assholes. ❤
Theyre mad because you guys werent slam dancing?
I thought I'm not the only one was about Darcy from Smashing Pumpkins. As well as skinny
This band is dope....I love their artwork and "take a picture" is a fantastic song that is very nostalgic
Its gonna kill me is one if the best songs ever. And where do we go from here
They did a live version of "Take A Picture" on The Anthony Cumia show a few years back. It's still on RUclips if anyone is interested. It's awesome. WAY better than the album version imo. His voice is outstanding. Highly recommend checking it out.
I was born and raised in NJ. Lived there for 35 years, Moved to WA State in 2001.
One the day I left, it was very emotional. Got on a plane at Newark airport and never looked back. During the flight, this song came on one of the free music stations offered.
I don't think I ever cried so hard in my entire life. Most of the lyrics may not fit my situation but, this song really hit my soul that day.
He sounds like a terror of a human that is now past that and romanticizes his hurtful actions of the past with being part of the process of creating his forgettable art. A familiar troupe with many of his stories.
I woke up this morning looking for Corky and the juice pigs story.
Ah yeah, the days before 911 when a person could be drunk, strip down and be a nuacence on a flight then greet the captain as you walk off the flight.
Simpler times indeed.
"Ladies and gentleman, this is Captain Groenewegen speaking."
Interesting story and subject even without knowing the band.
Easy to listen to your voice now with the adjusted music volume 🙏
Love filter they have alot of great songs that weren't even hits
I remember that club remix. They'd always play it at the end of the night
Thank you for sharing this story! 🤘🏻✌🏼🥶
Our pleasure!

That's really cool. I definitely relate to take my picture/ I won't remember/ hey dad whad'dya think about your son now
Some say it was a rip off of the song BAD by U2 from the album The Unforgettable Fire. I said BS to this guy. But I went back and listened to the two songs in full. Well...the guy had a little bit of a point. Hey, have you done a bit on Soul Asylum??? Or The Cult???
Weird, this song was in my recomended videos late last night seemingly out of the blue
I remember hearing Wendy Rollins from Radio104.5 in philly saying this meaning back in the early 10s.. i stopped listening to commercial radio, and got SiriusXM.. 🎉🎉
Great video as usual, but the subtitles seem to be from another Filter/NIN video... Thanx!!!
Great song!
That's a very important song for me.
Take a Picture is a good song but I never heard it that much. I thought Hey Man Nice.. was their biggest hit. Oh yeah and My Long Walk to Jail is really good too.
What was with the 16 year old girl wearing Pamela Voorhees' sweater? That was very random.
Great video.
I'd Hazard a Bet...
That There Were Some "Pharmaceuticals" Involved With Those "Memory-Loss-BlackOuts".
(XanaX & Valium, Did it to Me)🤷
It can happen with just alcohol, don't ask me how I know.
Great band
Filter’s debut album was great. I lost touch with them once I got older, married, had kids.
Heads up everybody. If you make a comment with the complete title of one of their biggest songs Hey Man Nice.. then youtube's nannybot will most likely shadowblock your comment. You will be able to see it but no one else will. Always go incognito to verify that your comment has actually posted publicly.
He looks like Edward Snowden twin
He's the brother of the bad robot in Terminator 2 :)
Can you please talk about the band Our Lady Peace?
Yes on my to do list. A girl from Edson where I grew up her Mom worked at tim Hortons and took the band’s order. I remember she was so excited the next day in grade 6
@@rnrtruestories That's so cool. Literally one of my favorite bands.
Short Bus is still their best album imo. Wish they’d go back to that sound.
It’s so sad Richard is such a douche bag …. I really love filter
I was so completely disappointed with this song and how much it was overplayed. The video was a trip, though
Horrible song that wouldn’t go away
The most embarrassing thing about the song was that it sucked.
terrible take
A sign that yer music sucks; my 66 year old mom loves this song...
There's still time to delete your completely asinine comment before too many more people read it.
If you have kids or communicate with anyone a generation younger than you, I wonder what your response will be when they tell you the same thing. Let me guess, it'll be you're right and everyone else is wrong. Sounds like you're nearing your "old man yelling at clouds" phase.
@dream_in_digital yeah, I'll take melvins over that trash...oh, what? Melvins were before them, and are still touring and recording... so, who's more relevant?
@@nonservitium lol dude Buzz from Melvins is a massive KISS fan and most 'serious' music fans hate kiss. SEEMS A BIT SUBJECTIVE
@@gymonstarfunkle136 everything is subjective
I like this song. I thought Filter was pretty cool. But....... I never really followed them. Thanks again, my Canadian dude!!
👃😎🤘
Love the video truly do! But more alice more trees more nirvana more mother love bone! Pls
Yes more alternative coming as are other genres
@rnrtruestories thank you! Screw the negative comments and even tho I posted asking for a certain type video I still enjoy all your content and that's somthing some viewers forget that it's "your content"!! Your going great and thank you
