- Coming up renowned rock front Ed Roland of Collective Soul gives us the skinny on his band’s first number one hit Shine that came years before... He was visiting his parents and his kid brother Dean who was only 15 was messing around with a riff.. Ed loved it and finished the song on the spot…5 years later it would be the biggest rock song of the year in 1994… the brothers would later elaborate calling the chorus a prayer… a rock and roll prayer and a few years later one of the greatest legends of last 50 years, Dolly Parton would record a very strange but cool version.. How Collective Soul became the best of the post grunge era… Critics said they were copy cats of the grunge genre but they wrote this #1 hit years before the genre blew up...The interview is next on professor for rock.

Hey music junkies Professor of Rock alway here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time . If you love the music of the rock and roll era, YOu’ll love this channel where we get the stories of the song directly from the artists who created them. In the early 90s, bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains came in like a tsunami and wiped everything away. Although these bands were defiantly influenced by heavy metal and classic Rock, I mean Nirvana definitely owes a debt to Boston’s more than a feeling and Pearl Jam 10 has much more in common with the classic rock than any other genre that was an influence on the member individually. It was a fresh sound by the mid 90s though, things were changing… and a second wave of bands came in to keep the flame of rock alive as Hip Hop and Teen Pop was taking over radio. One of these bands that made an immediate impact was Collective Soul. Their first two albums sold 3 million copies EACH not to mention their first 4 albums were all platinum and they had 7 number one hits on the rock charts and another 2 that went to #2.
With songs that defined the those times like December and The World I Know , as well as Run and Heavy. and of course their very first release SHINE. Shine is a bone a fide slice of 90s rock that went to #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and crossed over to hit #4 on the Alternative charts as well as #1 on the mainstream rock chart and charted worldwide. It was the biggest rock song of 1994 and it all came from a chance writing session between Ed and his kid bother Dean. Ed decided to visit his parents… at this time a struggling musician. he heard his kid brother dean chipping away at a cool riff… Dean was then only 15 and likely unaware of how great the riff was… It’s one of those riff that sound so classic and full you feel like it was taken from another great song from the 60s or 70s but it’s all Collective soul. From there the two finished the song and it took 5 years before it want to #1. Lead singer and songwriter Ed Roland is one of the greatest guys in music. I’ve been able to interview him several times over the years and He’s a genuine guy who cares deeply about rock and roll not only in the music he creates but all of the history that came before. He’s one of the good guys for sure and what follows is the story behind creating Shine and Collective Soul’s Debut album Hints Allegation and things left unsaid. Развлечения
POLL: Who is your pick for the best rock band since 1990?
So many great ones, but my pick is RHCP
Tough question I love so many 90s bands: STP, Third Eye Blind, Smashing Pumpkins and Collective Soul come to mind, almost forgot Tool
Death Cab for Cutie (even they admit they’d have picked a different name had they known they would get big), they survived and evolved after core member Chris Walla left, adding in two new members (that just shows how much Chris did in the band).
Thrice, hands down.
I like Dave Matthew's Band, Counting Crows, and Train.
My father never spoke of the music that he liked. When I was a kid, he had Eagles greatest hits on cassette and that’s about all I ever heard him listen to. For whatever reason, when the video for Shine came on MTV, he would run into the room, turn the volume all the way up, and stare at the tv. That song really got to him. One of my favorite memories of my father.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing that!
Haha, I can kinda see that in my head! 😂
My dad was not really a rock kind of guy. He was 95 when he passed in 2021. I AM a rock and roll guy! I am 65 now. So, when they had the 9-11 tribute on television, with so many different musicians of many different genres, Neil Young played Inagine while playing piano. A few weeks later, when we talked about the show, he ask me "Who was the guy that played the piano and sang that song 'Imagine' something ...." I told him it was Neil Young, and he loved it. He asked me if I like him, and I said "Dad, he is probably my favorite musician". He asked me what else does he do, so I gave him 9 of his CDs to listen too. At 75 years old, my Dad became a Neil Young listener... at times. It was a wonderful moment so late in our lives, for him to connect to what I have loved since I was a kid.
@@ProfessorofRock ... Hey Adam, sorry to hear about your pop's recent change of venue. I believe he'll be waiting for you when your time arrives. Just don't be in a hurry.
I've been an admirer of Collective Soul since hearing Shine the first time, and every time since. However, Gel sneaked in and became my favorite.
Great memory....so cool! 😎👌🙏
Collective Soul is a criminally underrated band. The first few albums are excellent end-to-end, and they put on an amazing live show. Thanks for covering them!
Criminally is exactly right.
I agree. They've been in my top two bands since the 90's, and I've seen them several times. LOVE them.
Agreed. I heard 2 or 3 of their songs on the radio before I realized what a brilliant band they were. I just love the sound of everything they do. They were always so underrated, it's really a shame, and even a little frustrating for me.
I also found them while in college in the early 2000’s and thought holy crap they played this song that I heard here and another one there and never knew who they were. Loved them since and have also enjoyed their live shows.
@@ProfessorofRock
I replied above.
Collective Soul is one of those groups that needs no “Greatest Hits” album. Every album is a non stop, edge to edge greatest hits. They don’t have a dud in their catalogue. “7 Year Itch” is just a slice of a bunch of their songs. I have a few bands that I’ll buy their albums as soon as they come out without even listening to a single clip first. Collective Soul is one of those bands for me. I’ve purchased and usually pre-ordered every one of their albums. I’ve never been sorry. Great interview.
Everything you need to know about Ed Roland is when you mentioned your father passing and he stuck his hand out, what a guy. Humble and a bloody good bloke.
I met the band years ago. We were doing a special setup at Six Flags and they played a show. Not a lot of folks there but they played incredibly well anyway. We had special access backstage and they all came over and were so generous with their time. Great conversations and just a bunch of great people. Truly a nice memory.
I'm from Central Florida, and our local rock station was one of the first to put Shine in heavy rotation (Ed even said as much when I saw CS in Orlando a few years ago) so by the end of the 90s I was burnt out on Shine and was much more into their newer stuff at the time. Now with the benefit of time I can go back and really appreciate what they did throughout the decade. Collective Soul in my opinion is one of those rare bands who never declined in quality. The only reason they stopped having hits was the industry shifted its focus from real rock and roll to something that appeals to the lowest common denominator. And they STILL rock so hard live. 🤘🤘
I'm glad he insisted upon leaving the "yeah!" in there.
When he reached across to take your hand and make human contact with you when you said your dad had passed, that was just… ❤️
You’re a kind and authentic man, Professor of Rock. That’s why people who are well known in the music industry are willing to interview with you.
Never forget that you created this fantastic channel out of love of music. 😊🙌🏼✊🏼
The fact that he turned on a dime when you told him your father passed and focused in on you and him was the most impactful part of the video for me. What an amazing guy.
I have my own "Shine" story, but it doesn't come close to that one split-second moment.
Yeah, Ed is always like that. I've seen several interviews where the interviewer brings up something in their livfe and Ed pivots to that rather than continue to take the spotlight.
He's a preacher or reverend or something along the lines, or atleast he was. Think he still might be.
@@Spectre-wd9dl His father is a minister, he mentioned that in the interview. That's all I know about that.
8:30 "You wrote a prayer.". A lot of RocknRoll is exactly that, intentional or not. It's one of the reasons it resonates. It's ironic that it was labeled as the Devils music when it has helped so many, including myself, on their way back up from the depths.
So true. Thanks Bill.
Totally. It heals your soul.
I don't think Collective Soul has ever made a bad record. One of the best concerts you will ever see too! Ed has to be one of the coolest dudes around. Thanks for the great interview professor!
Opinion
I am a big fan of Collective Soul. But, sadly, they have made several bad songs - You speak my language, being one of them.
Thank you for the talk with Ed. I have seen Collective Soul a little over 20 times. If fact one summer my wife and 4 daughters traveled to Vegas, Phoenix, LA, and a couple other cities to see them. Got to the point that the guys recognized us and gave the girls picks and drum sticks and other stuff. We had the pleasure of hanging with them a few times and I have to agree with you, not just Ed, but all the guys, are some of the most genuinely nice guys you will ever meet. Several stories I could tell you, but they are just our personal stories and of no interest to anyone else. Can't wait to see them again soon!!
Wow...first Tommy James, then Randy Bachman and now Ed Roland....you seem to be tapping all my favorite frontman over the years. It was a pleasant surprise to find your interview with Ed! I've seen Collective Soul twice, including once just last year and they still got it. Much of their songs have gotten me through some rough times and enhanced some great times. Ed has to be one of the underrated frontmen in rock. Great interview as always!
I never thought of them as a Christian band, and he says he believes in the separation of church and rock, but his Southern Baptist upbringing really seeps into his music. So much of it is positive and uplifting. "The World I Know" is a great song, and the video is the most uplifting video I've ever seen.
*"So-be-'it'~Lord!♡¡"*
True. There’s a reason why Christian rock didn’t really do so well on the US charts.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I’m reminded of the words of Hank Hill. “You’re not making Christianity better. You’re making rock ‘n’ roll worse.”
@@keithmills778 Sooooo true. And it’s even worse with the religion forcing nowadays.
Precious Declaration is a great one too.
I love how Dolly Parton thought highly enough of this song to cover it. The story of its origin and the lyrics will make it that much more fun to sing next time my band does it. We've been playing it for years...crowd favorite. Thanks, Professor!
That would be a massive compliment.
You know you’re a legend when Dolly Parton covers your song!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 It was only just now when I head a clip of Dolly Parton's version that I realized that the word "heaven" was in the song. For all these years, I thought they were saying "gotta".
And the fact she did it with Nickel Creek made it even better. One of my all time favorites by them is The Lighthouse Tale.
@@ShandiNicole1982 Bryan Sutton played guitar on this song for her as well, he is even in the video that the Professor showed at 10:57!
I love Collective Soul! They've been among my favorite bands since Shine. I've loved every album they've done!! Pure rock!
I grew up in the '60's and early '70's and watched Disco, Punk, and Grunge replace the kind of music I fell in love with in my youth.
By the time Collective Soul came along, I was desperate for someone like Collective Soul to come along.
Hugely underrated band.
I❤️Collective Soul.
My Favorite Rock Band Of The Planet! Great Band!
Love Ed Roland & Collective Soul!
The best!
L-O-V-E Collective Soul! Especially with Ed Roland at the helm-great guy, too
They are a hidden gem in a geode of the rock community.
Hints allegations and things left unsaid…I’ve worn out copies. At one point, recovering from a broken ankle, I used the beat of the songs to walk and regain my strength. I used this album to wake up my grandmother in the mornings when I took care of her. Love you guys…and I really do hope that Ed sees this. You guys mean a lot to me. Thank you for that!
Great interview 👍 thank you Adam !!
I'm so sorry to hear of your father's passing. 😢
I lost my mother 10 days ago, too. Very hard isn't it.
*"Amazing interpersonal interview!¡....Thank You both!
...God Almighty Bless You both Abundantly , in Yeshua's, Christ Jesus' Glorious Name!¡"*
*"Amen"*
I don’t care if it is a prayer or not, I LOVE this song!!!
I totally resonate with him when he said “I believe in the separation of church and rock…” YEAH!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I remember driving around in my car, windows down, singing at the top of my lungs…. ESPECIALLY the “yeah” (no toilet paper tube, tho).
I LOVE this interview!!! I really appreciate “meeting” this amazing musician and hearing his stories in this talk.
Please tell him this song really helped me during a down time of my life, and I truly adore his music!
Much love and respect 💕🙏🏻💕
At a time when popular music was going to crap, it was always good to know that there were bands like Collective Soul out there to listen to
What a total gentleman! He impressed me with his gentleness and honesty! Very refreshing
Being from Seattle area , the reason theres so much 70's influence in the 90's era bands is it was common for people here to listen their parents favorite music instead of making a point NOT to like it as is common in most areas .
Collective Soul has written some of the greatest rock melodies/songs ever. Ed Roland is on my Mt Rushmore of favorite rock vocalists!
Thank you for your in depth conversations with artists and bands that were never on my play list. It’s never too late to listen to and gain appreciation for a song or performers. In my 73 years I’ve heard a lot, but much of it just becomes background noise as life churns on.
When my students ask me what type of music I listen to, I tell them mood music. Thats whatever I'm in the mood for at the time. I also tell them that I don't have a favorite song, there are just to many great sings to choose from.
So right. It’s just a number, Ron. You are never too old to learn something new.
my Favorite Band of All Time!!! ...personally, for me, they are MY beatles... thank u gentlemen!
I am a Christian and I play Rock-N-Roll. I can't separate the two, I "Jam for the lamb and "Rock for the Flock". Great interview Professor. BE BLESSED!
My dad grew up with the 50's, 60's and 70's rock and I was exposed to that growing up. Most people his age didn't get into the music I was growing up on in the 80's and 90's. I took to the rock of the 90's. I was a teen at the time and it was the music of my generation. All of my friends listened to it. They all however thought my brother and I had the coolest dad because out of all the rock music coming out in the 90's, he actually liked Collective Soul. When they got to ride in the car with my dad, they got to listen to "cool music". Collective Soul was one the great bands from back then and I have a lot of really good memories associated with them. I really miss those days.
Collective Soul could leave out their 15 most popular songs and still put on a fantastic concert! Their catalog is so good and "Cut The Cord" from their latest album kicks ass!
It’s how awesome they really are.
Yeah it is a dam good song and album. Their last album Blood was amazing!
This song hit me immediately, it spoke to me as well as it just rocked. I followed Collective Soul for the next ten years buying their CDs as they came out. They were one of the bands I actually bought a physical copy of any band. Now everything is available from streaming.
Streaming kinda ruined the experience of actually discovering things through the record store. Bummer. 😕
Wow Adam, first wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about your father. It has been 12 1/2 years since my father passed, and I think about him every day. He was a huge fan of Bob Seger, Linda Ronstadt, Toto, Genesis, Phil Collins, and so many more great musicians. I remember when he passed away, I had made a CD of his favorites and we played it at his wake. And I made sure that I put the CD in with him when I say goodbye. I have to stop for a minute to go wipe my face before I could finish writing this.
I have to admit, I was not a big fan of Collective Soul initially. It wasn’t until I heard the second album. The song “Simple” is my favorite song by them.
I love how the beginning of it is very misleading, and then the song just kicks in! And the recording is phenomenal.!! For some reason I thought you were older. I didn’t realize that you graduated high school and 94. You’re a baby. Lol! It’s amazing the amount of music knowledge you have, almost as much as me. Lol.! I graduated high school in 88. My friends call me the mayor. They’re always like the girl knows more about music and history of our neighborhood than anybody else. Lol.! One of my besties, Dana, she’s my vice mayor. Between the two of us, there’s nothing that we don’t remember about growing up in Boca Raton, Florida. All of her friends, all of our history, and all of the music that we grew up on. BTW…. Casey Kasem is my hero too!
I always wanted to hear him say…
Tarynn, here is your long distance dedication .. ☮️💜😊
Nice gesture to your pop!👍
☺️
Such a great song - I always loved the sense of awe in it. I could see it having a huge “Running Up That Hill”-style comeback if it got exposed to younger audiences via a popular TV show or movie.
Maybe Stranger Things or Cobra Kai can use it someday.
Love this song and album! My wife and I had the privilege of seeing Dolly perform this live a few years back. Gave me chills! Such a wonderfully powerful song! I'm a Baptist minister that still loves rock 'n' roll, and I still play it live with others or as a solo act. Great music is great music.
Ed’s belief in the separation of church and rock ‘n roll makes me respect him a lot more!
The mid 80's was a great time for rock. Daniel Band, Messiah Prophet, Saint, Barren Cross, Bride, Bloodgood, Whitecross, Stryper, Stryken and a ton more.
When Shine came out it instantly became stuck in my brain. It made the world seem a bit brighter. Great song and underrated band.
Same here.
I’m near tears- in the BEST way ever. Thank you!
Wow, thank you!
I had chance to see Collective Soul at a outdoor show in Fairbanks,Alaska. What a magical night .for early fall in Alaska it was warm dragonflies flying over the audience keeping the mosquitoes at bay a full moon . It also was my sister's birthday (She passed away 3 years before) The Music and show was great. One of the best concerts I have ever seen. Thanks for the memories .... The show was 8/8/2008 in Fairbanks.
Shine is not only one of the best rock song but one of the the best songs ever made....yeah
It was so refreshing to hear somebody talk about Elton John and Bernie Taupen as being musical heroes because there are very few pairings as good as that one. You probably count them on one hand
When songs like "Shine" and "December" came out, my annoying neighbors (at the time) would blast them, so that everyone in the building had to listen to their music. Now that decades have passed and I'm living in a new place, I've come to appreciate those songs.
The 1st time I heard Shine was when it first started playing on the radio. I was driving and was absolutely elated to hear such deep, beautiful bass and real rock sound I, as a teen of the early 80s, had been craving and missing so badly. I nearly had to pull over so I could give it my full attention. Shine has such a deep, moving sound. I became a huge fan of Collective Soul and now have many favorites from them, but Shine will always be special (yeah).
What a great interview and great guy. This helps me know and appreciate Shine. December is one of my favorite 90s songs.
And may your father rest in peace, Adam. His musical influence on you seems to have helped birth this channel, where you keep some of the best music of the last 75 years alive.
That riff was everything!
No kidding!
Hook-laden! 🎶
Love the interview I Love Collective Soul and always will I love that song it's just incredible song God bless God bless America God bless you long live the republic
Growing up ( like your dad ) music was a major part of my life ,little did I know how important it would be ,as you know music is a memory trigger and can flash a picture in your head , ask anyone who served during the Vietnam era . We enjoy your stories and bringing the facts to life , keep up the good work !….
Thanks for the interview vid Sir, both of those guys seem like good people to me. Also, God bless you and your family as we head into 2023.!
Great video, as they all are! So sorry for the loss of your father, as you speak so lovingly about your relationship with him and how he influenced who have become. I am so grateful to have come upon your videos during the pandemic some 2 years ago, and I will continue to be amazed at your research into the great artists that your are interviewing. You have helped me through the losses and dark times in my life. Thank you Professor of Rock!!
Another amazing interview. This is what keeps me coming back for more. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for getting such interesting interviews. You are one of the best I've ever watched getting these guys and gals to open up.
Collective Soul is one of my absolute favorites. Every album, I would play over and over. Never got sick of it. Such a crucial part of my childhood in the 90's
I'm a GenX'er and they are huge in my book, too. Right now, their catalog is my "desert island" material. At other points in my life it was The Beatles or Billy Joel, but they have taken over in the last 20 years or so.
What an amazing interview. I always enjoyed their music but now I am a true fan...Ed Roland is truly one of the good ones, God bless him. This is one of my favorite interviews you have ever done. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada.
@Professor_Of_Rock_DM_Nicegram LOL
Underrated band, excellent band. One of the last bands where you could put on the album and listen to the whole thing and it was all good. 👊🏾✊🏽
I'm old. Even in the mid 90's. I loved collective soul then I still do now. Thanks Doc.
Man, when we're all dead and the Gen Z crowd is super old, you might think the teenagers will be listening to Elvis or Beatles and calling it classic.
I got news for all of you: In a hundred years, the band the youth of America will listen to as representative of the rockers of our time will undoubtedly be Collective Soul.
They are timeless, and wholly underrated!
Edit: If Dolly Parton ever sang something I created, I would easily proclaim, "I have arrived." That is an awesome piece of trivia I never knew. Congrats! That's even better than having your music covered by anyone else alive! If Dolly is singing your song, you did something right.
Best to you all-
So sorry about your father Adam. I’ve always loved your stories about him and his love of music, which was such a great gift to you.
Collective Soul is my favourite band of the 90s, I have at least their 3 first CDs. The world I know is one of my favourites......well so many.
As soon as the grunge era started I kind of tuned out to much of the 90s music and stayed entrenched in the 50s-80s. I remained pretty steadfast in my ways (with a few exceptions) until I started listening to your show and others like Rick Beato. Now I'm opening myself up to some gems that I skipped past in the 90s onward.
Collective Soul, meshed’ ,60’s,70’s and 80’, rock to make’90’, rock imo and did a great job of it
My favorite band of all time. They had an endless supply of catchy riffs.
Oh, man, I’m so sorry about your dad. He’s such a part of so many of your stories, I’m sorry to hear he’s gone. I just know he is proud of you. Sending ❤️
Collective Soul was one of the first bands I really remember rocking out to as a kid. These guys were a staple of my parents collection.
Such a great interview, Collective Soul are such an amazing band.
I've grown to appreciate the songs that I grew sick of during my youth (the 80s & 90s) due to the constant air play they got back then. I'm glad that you gave us some insight into the workings of Collective Soul. So thank you, and keep up the great work...
Thanks Matt!
The music from that era is even more appreciated today given the load of crap that radio stations play nowadays. There isn’t much variety, and you hear the same song several times in an hour.
Matt, you’re so right. So many songs back then used to have me screaming “stop” at the radio, including this one. But now they fill me with the warm inner glow of nostalgia and the knowledge that these were actually great songs.
Grew up 60s and 70s here and I love Collective Soul. They could rock it and with meaningful songs! He is still a solid guy. Stellar Records that definitely earn classic rock status!
@@coololdluke3905
I still have trouble thinking of the music of my youth as "classic rock". I'm in my mid-40s, but I haven't quite gotten used to that reality yet. I guess that I just have to face the facts, at some point. I'll get around to it, eventually...
I've been addicted to collective soul for years but as I get older the genius of their lyrics really hit home.
I loved that song. It was a very refreshing song. Some music seems predictable but collective music certainly was not.
Professor, I'm so sorry to hear you lost your dad. He sounds like he was the coolest father ever. I'm sending you a hug a praying for your comfort in the loss.
Collective Soul is one of my favorite bands. "Disciplined Breakdown" helped me through bad devorce years ago...thanks guys...😊😊
I remember Chuck Colson who was a Christian mentioning this album on a radio segment he did daily. This is the same Chuck Colson who went to prison due to Watergate and he later started Prison Fellowship Ministries. He talked about the positive lyrics. Along with “Shine”, he mentions the song “Reach”. Some of the lyrics are … “Hope I’m able to ride out this storm, c’mon Gabriel blow your horn”. He later sings “Reach out to me, I need you to save me”. It intrigued me so much that I went out and bought the album. One of my all time favorites. Great band!! Thanks Professor for doing this one.
So sorry about your father, Adam. This was a great interview and always love the insight into music of my life!
I love this band. Seen them live 10 times. Met all the current members. They are amazing live and Ed is a great frontman. Still putting out new music that never disappoints. Even when they're performing songs from their heyday, they still manage to make it fresh.
I remember the first time I heard "Shine" on the radio. It was such a different sound than anything else at the time. Kind of like a second wave of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". It was (and still is) in a category of its own.
I tell people this a lot: Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid is one of the most underrated albums of all time and easily one of my top 10 ever. I'm 47, my first record was Def Leppard Pyromania when I was 5 😁. This album is in a very small club of albums since my childhood that I can listen to every song on order and remember every lyric and never get tired of
"Wasting Time" is one of my all time favorite songs. 🎶😍
Thank you so much for this episode!! This song came out when I was twenty-one, and I can still remember the first time I heard it. I was driving down the interstate and it came on the radio. I was so blown away by it that I pulled off at the next town I came to and found a record store in the mall where I bought the cassette. I never really listened to much "modern" music, mostly being stuck in the 60s and 70s, but I loved, and still love, Collective Soul's music.
Great interview.
Always loved these guys.
We used to do this song in the one band I was in.....much, much fun.
Thanks for the videos, another great job . 👍
Thanks Ritch. Rock on!
I loved Collective Soul from the first time I heard them. Every song was awesome. Thanks for the new insight on the origins of Shine. You rock!
Shine was one of my favorites the year it came out. Stood apart. I need to listen it while out walking this week. -The Music Fan Man
Good call!
Great idea!
Ed is a great guy. Kind and sincere.
I’m sorry to hear of the recent passing of your father. You speak of him frequently so I know you were close.
You were brought up on the music that I enjoyed when I was young and still enjoy. I know your father had a lot to do with your love of music.
I share a similar musical connection with my dad. He was part of the WWII generation so I was brought up on an earlier generation of music. When I was a kid, my father was playing big band jazz, swing and a dash of bee bop around the house. Every once in a while he’d break out his licorice stick (clarinet) and play some of the music he grew up on in the 1940s. Those are fond memories.
This vid made me realize I jam to Collective Soul more than I thought. So many of their songs are on my life’s playlist!
Thank you for this. Shine is an amazing song, and I think the only Collective Soul CD I owned was this.
The 90s were not a good time for me but, I'm always so happy when you remind me of beautiful but forgotten music such as this.
Much Love to you Professor!💖💖👏👏👏
Thanks for listening
Uncovering the gems, every day. 💎
As a mega Van Halen fan, and having seen both bands in concert, to me CS is a lot like Van Halen. There aren’t any bad songs from Collective Soul. Just like there aren’t any bad songs from VH.The lyrics are great and the music and melodies are just amazing! Plus CS is incredible in concert and their recent album Vibrating is just as good as their 90s stuff. A truly criminally underrated band.
Yes! I was in middle school when Shine and Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid came out. Shine was a huge song then and my dad and I both loved them!
That's so cool also that Dolly Parton covered it! Gotta love the genre-crossing covers like that!
Allison! Haven't seen you for quite some time! Hope all is well. Dont' be a stranger.
It’s a total classic.
Yeah! Shine is a well written song that also rocks out. These guys are a little underrated. These guys were competent musician with good song writing credentials. Awesome show. Yeah!
Thanks Glen!
Yeah! 🎤
December, and The World I Know: 2 songs by Collective Soul that I couldn’t get enough of. Yes they were so good! It brings mevback to a few very sweet years. You said you reviewed the band awhile back. I missed it; gonna go watch it. But first, this upcoming interview. You rock, Professor Adam!❤
Thanks for watching my friend. Hope you enjoy it.
December is the best!
@@ProfessorofRock yes, indeed. Thank you!😎🌹🦊
Thanks for the reminder once again! Great band is back in my rotation. By the way the latest album is fantastic too!
@professorofrock as always thank you for the songs from the 90's, the last great decade of music. Collective Soul Shine was definitely on heavy rotation on our local rock station 93 Rock which is now 98 Rock.
Wow, great timing on a really great interview! My husband and I have been talking about Collective Soul a lot lately, playing it for our teenagers. Turns out that we both loved CS while growing up. Now that we are older and Christian converts, I recognize and wondered about the prayers and spiritual bent of many CS songs. Thanks for providing answers to so many of my questions! I will enjoy the music even more now, and I will also have yet another great example to show my budding musicians here at home of how you can make authentic rock and roll that has both awesome sound and substance.
(Now I'm off to look up that Dolly Parton cover. I had no idea! 😃)
Always loved that song. I was in high school in the 90's and still love this music but I also listen to the new music that is coming out. But some days I just want to listen to older music.
Never followed Collective Soul but liked some of their songs. Thanks Adam for giving me a whole new perspective of them and their meaning. You never cease to bring such great information from my past.
Awesome interview! They are fantastic!
One of the last pre-pandemic concerts I saw was CS on a double bill with the Gin Blossoms. Both were excellent, complemented each other perfectly, and shared the stage for several numbers. Great experience all around from two underrated bands from the 90s.
I love your channel! I try to watch all of
Your Vids as they come out and they are so informative even for someone that lives for music. Sorry about the loss of your father😥 keep making the great vids!
My goodness this brought back so many memories for me! I was a senior in high school when I first heard Collective Soul. I was so hooked. Going to iTunes right now to download as much of them as I can. Than you PofR!! ❤️
Collective Soul! Awesome. You know the great ones, my friend. Keep it up
