I went on it this past Monday and it definitely was rough but it did feel a bit smoother than when I rode it a few years ago. Usually I come off it with my back hurting but not this time around.
I was told a good story about the Matterhorn's brake system from Ed Feuer, the Imagineer that was in charge of the 1977 bobsled update when the ride went from 1 car to the 2-car trains. The existing brake system couldn't stop the cars with the added weight when the bottoms were wet. He was tasked with finding a way to make the brakes work. He thought about how lots of cars would not stop when intersections would flood, but his Mercedes always did. He did some research and learned that Mercedes' brakes have little round pucks on their surface instead of being flat like other breaks. So if you ever notice all the brakes throughout the ride have these pucks, you now know why and you can thank Ed.

Thank you for making this video :) The Matterhorn will always have a special place in my heart. Being on this ride with my dad is one of my earliest memories ever. I remember riding in my dad's lap and it being night and I was so scared but I loved the feeling of it. I covered my ears and my dad held me in his lap because I was scared of the Yetis. I will never forget how loud they were back in the 2000s. You used to queue on the side of the mountain and just hearing the loud growl every couple of minutes was truly an unforgettable experience. I remember my dad telling me when all of the Yetis were gone so I could look out at the ride. It has changed so much over the years and it doesn't have the same vibe as it did when I was younger. But still, to this day it is one of my favorite rides. Just my dad can't get on it anymore cause he says it hurts his back lol. One time when I was little I looked out and just saw the glowing red eyes and hearing the gnarly growl and the whispy snow air as we ascended the hill in the beginning. The only thing I wish they kept was the LOUD growl that you can hear when you are in line or just walking around it, it was so intimidating. Seeing all of the different versions of the ride really brought me back to that time. thank you again for the nostalgia :')
9:29 Thank you for giving me credit to use my POV of Matterhorn bobsleds’ queue, I highly appreciated it! 👍🏼 And also, I heard about the history of the attraction as well.
Gold Rusher at Magic Mountain (hour north of disneyland) is faster, smoother, seats more, has a more interesting layout...etc. Also have you ever ridden a RMC roller coaster?
I've been going to Disneyland since I was a kid and had an annual pass for about 12 years before starting to work there in 2012. I went to Europe for the first time in 2017 and visited Zermatt. Seeing the real Matterhorn was the most incredible experience ever! It is so majestic and beautiful, and Zermatt in general was a gorgeous place.
I remember before the 1978 re-do and the damn mountain was hollow (the equivalent of riding Space Mountain with the lights on). Disney really brought the attraction's quality up a few notches with the ice cave theming!

Yeeeessssss! I always wanted to see you do the Matterhorn! Also, could you do the history of Tokyo Disneyland for the next Theme Park destination? You already did Tokyo DisneySEA, so wouldn't it be right to do the other park in the resort? Besides, with the Japan 2020 Summer Olympics, now would be the right time to cover the park!
One other update you forgot to mention: In 2016, the bobsleds were given padded seats due to complaints from guests hurting their tailbones on the bobsled seats.
Jordan Mori I won’t lie, it gets me every time. Not sure why, maybe just the human-like size and proximity, or how quickly you go by... but yeah, it does feel fairly spooky!
The thing that makes it more scary is the fact that it’s a full animatronic figure that has been programmed to move more quickly and naturally giving it a more realistic and plausible range of movement, the 1970s ones were ok but very limited and static so they most likely just used the appearance of ‘Harold the yeti’ as a basis but replaced almost everything else with new animatronic tech

This is the only rollercoaster I don’t even hesitate to re-ride after knowing exactly how rough and terrifying from a structural standpoint it is. I’ve gotten bruised elbows and ribs as well as back pain, and any scream I make on that ride is when the bobsled hits one of those sharp turns where you overlook the mountain and I feel like the tracks are gonna give and we’re gonna go sailing over the park. I also had a day where 3/4 of my rides ended with me or the bobsled adjacent to mine getting pulled aside on that cool pull out track they use to fix stuff. This thing CLEARLY needs some love. But I just can’t help but get on.
Oh and Tinkerbell would fly from the peak of the Matterhorn to the top of the Disney Castle each evening. This was a Disney cast member dressed as Tinkerbell, held in a harness, and carried along a cable spanning the two structures. She would glow from a spotlight that would track her. In the day, this nightly event would be anticipated by park guests causing them to take pause and in hushing voices, direct their children's gaze to the skyward spectacle - furthering the idea that 'life is but a dream'.
When I see videos of classic Disney attractions, it makes me wish I could travel back in time to when they were originally built and experience them, not to mention the surrounding areas in the park. It’s just weird to imagine a giant mound of dirt in the park given that space is at such a premium now.
This was awesome to finally ride on my first visit to DL. Insanely popular attraction with so much history. I will say it’s kind of like going to the chiropractor, lol. Great video! 👍🏻
I love all your videos. I just enjoy watching the history and building of theme park attractions so much, I have two requests if possible one day. Could you do the Country Bear Jamboree or even--while not an attraction--the Main Street Electrical Parade?
It's one of a kind in theming, but shares a very similar ride experience as Space Mountain in WDW. When bringing Space Mountain to Disneyland, they used the theming but reworked the ride experience since they already had the Matterhorn.
Also, I know it's not a theme park ride, but can you do the history of Club Disney? It was a really popular children's playzone here in Thousand Oaks, CA but closed. Please keep up the good work, I recently discovered your channel and now I'm a fan! Your videos give me great memories of my childhood! :)
Wow, that is a great history there. I do love the architecture that went into making the Matterhorn to scale, and the snow made with glass laced paint, incredible!' Kudos to your work once again! It's been a rough time working in the tourism industry atm due to Covid-19, and there's doubts hanging around Singapore. I do hope things here pick up, or no one is coming to travel here :(
Do the Magic Eye Theater that showed Magic Journeys, Captain EO, and Honey I Shrunk the Audience before being currently used as Disney’s movie previews.
Great video! I didn't realize it's been there so long, so that goes to show the lasting impact of that kind of attraction. I haven't been there since I was about 10 years old, but it's always been one of my favorites there. I do have a few suggestions for a future video, although I'm not sure how likely it is to find much information on a couple of them: *Xcelerator (Knott's Berry Farm) *Body Wars (EPCOT) *Snow White's Scary Adventures (Disney World/Disneyland) *Pirates 4-D (multiple parks, but I remember it from Six Flags New Orleans) I look forward to future videos!
Mark Crooks Not sure I completely agree with you. I have friends from Orlando and they absolutely loved this. They say it’s a shame they don’t have this. I admit it would be interesting to see how they do a version of this in other parks.🙂
It's a legendary landmark. The first tubular steel coaster that brought the legendary innovators at Arrow into the coaster industry, and we know what Arrow has done. The first inverting steel coaster, the first full-circuit hypercoaster, the first 4-d coaster, and many old favorites such as the suspended coaster, classic looper, and other classics. Truly deserving of its status as a coaster landmark. That being said, they should probably reach out to a company (probably S&S) to get a retrack. While I haven't been on it myself, I always hear about how rough it is, so Disney may want to get on fixing it.
I rode this for the first time in 2016. People complain that Space Mountain in MK is rough. Well, I would have to consider this a much rougher ride overall. (Yes, I realize this is an older ride compared to SM).
It's mind boggling that with so many people involved with building that "ride" that not a single one stood up and said "You know, this blows!! We probably shouldn't do this."
Can you do one about the Hyperion Theater at DCA from its start all the way to Frozen? Maybe get brief interviews with some of the cast if that’s even allowed?
I wish they could tear up the track and remodel it to be as smooth as Big Thunder Railroad. Lots of the curves are not banked at all and cause the sled to knock hard into most curves. Besides that, the banks, drops and curves were only designed to have a single sled, so linking 2 sleds would cause that much more frantic pushing and pulling at each other at every bend of the track. The first sled will hit the brake pad first causing the second sled to get bumped back, it's jarring after feeling it 30 times in a row. Also, the sleds were not repainted, they are completely new and much lighter, like they were made from the milk jug plastics just like the new boats from "it's a small world". It's amazing and historical, but currently is the only attraction in Disneyland where people want to ride it but don't "because its painful or jarring".
It's still strange seeing that front gate you walk under on the Matterhorn. That was only added a couple of years ago. Seems like it's always been there.
Now I have to wonder if this Wagner was the voice that said When the car stops, step out to your left on Mr Toad's Wild Ride. I heard that line so many times I still say to this day.
Fun Fact: Only used for Employees, inside the Matterhorn top area there is a single basketball court that Employees play on during their breaks or lunches
I went on the Matterhorn Bobsled repeatedly with my cousin my two aunt's and some of our friends from 8th grade during our class trip we were in Cali for a week class of 1998
I hope you're going to start off the season by talking about all of the Disney mountains first! You started with the Matterhorn Bobsleds, I bet next episode will be Space Mountain, and then after that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! Huge Big Thunder Mountain fan!
I was working a really long job one week and I had a really long night coupled with a super early start the next morning. I don’t think I had more than half a night’s sleep. So I go to the cafeteria to get a cup of coffee and I swear as I’m leaving the cafeteria I see the Matterhorn’s Yeti in the hallway walking into one of the conference rooms. I blink as if i have literally gone insane with sleeplessness so I look at the lineman working on the hallway’s ceiling and ask him “am I insane or did I just see the yeti walk in there?” He nodded and said “yeah you saw what you saw” and inferred it was a joke they were playing on one of the executives. Post story to that, the costume, last I checked, is now hanging out in that exec’s office.
Matterhorn is definitely one of those rides where I always forget how rough it is until I ride it again. Still a classic though!
Very rough ride, unpleasant when I was on it more than a decade ago, I can't imagine how rough it is now
I’ve only been on there like twice because my back.

It's mind boggling that with so many people involved with building that "ride" that not a single one stood up and said "You know, this blows!! We probably shouldn't do this."
@@Pissgremlin5964 I know right
Can you do one about the Hyperion Theater at DCA from its start all the way to Frozen? Maybe get brief interviews with some of the cast if that’s even allowed?
Harold: I will name him George and I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him
I wish they could tear up the track and remodel it to be as smooth as Big Thunder Railroad.
This is very well done. A+
OMG THANK YOU I MISS DISNEYLAND SO MUCH😭❤❤
Love this ride ♥️♥️
Climbing the real Matterhorn is now on my bucket list.
I love your videos! I feel like I’m in Theme Park College 😂🙌🏻 Fantastic video! I love the Matterhorn!!
Just realised you’re a channel i watch all the time but never subscribed! Thanks for the content
Fun Fact: Only used for Employees, inside the Matterhorn top area there is a single basketball court that Employees play on during their breaks or lunches
Do Ghostrider please!
I went on the Matterhorn Bobsled repeatedly with my cousin my two aunt's and some of our friends from 8th grade during our class trip we were in Cali for a week class of 1998
My absolute fav ride at Disneyland! The one I could go on over and over! So much fun! Do theme park history of Roger Rabbit/Alice in Wonderland!
Space Mountain/ Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters NEXT PLEASE?
I hope you're going to start off the season by talking about all of the Disney mountains first! You started with the Matterhorn Bobsleds, I bet next episode will be Space Mountain, and then after that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! Huge Big Thunder Mountain fan!
24 hr event was crazy but fun i went to that diamond event
Hey, can you do one on Incredicoaster?
You mean California Screamin' :'(
@@paulnelson1208 Yeah.
@@paulnelson1208 Yeah, right.
It will always be California screamin to me.
It’s too recent
My favorite ride at Disneyland ever
I suggest you review the history of “Paramount’s” Great America
Could you do the Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket?
Next do the theme park history of the great movie ride (Disney's Hollywood studios)
There were plans to bring a copy of the Matterhorn Bobsled to Epcot’s Japan pavilion, albeit a one track version, but that was shot straight to Hell.
Good choice on the video! You should also do one on splash mountain
Awesome Work
